the thing about magic in esurience is that everything i happen to know about it is useless to the info i need to actually worldbuild with it

like idk who can use it, idk exactly how or why magical creatures Are, idk exactly what it can be used for or how it has been discovered and cultivated

but i know its cold? and it has something to do with breath/breathing, as it must be exhaled...or maybe that's just one kind of way to use it,,

Some light fae redesigns!  I wanted to make them look just a touch more inhuman and add some markings for Reasons that may or may not be spoilers.  I’m pretty happy with the results so I think I’ll keep the design like this going forward.

Also yes, their blood colour does match their skin/eye colour :3c

Hell yeah got some full bodies for the greater dragons!  Sea, earth, and sky respectively.  SUPER happy with how they turned out (though I definitely struggled with the earth for a bit).

Greater dragons are the rarest and most powerful creatures in the world of Esurience, so much so that they revered as gods by almost every other race.  The Land of Ava in particular specifically worships dragons...though only dragons that agree with their way of things.

Some lazy cat draws.  The only reason these were so quick is cus none of the prias have marking (except manul but i didn’t draw em whoops).   Anyways, these guys are based off of, and called in canon, caracal, manul, lynx, and eyra.  These are roughly to scale, too, with the lynx and caracal both reaching about 4′7″ for males (those two are female tho so technically they should be shorter here but oh well)

Some stained glassed art of some Avin gods! .o. I realized I needed to design some things before I continue working on this mini comic so I put these together real quick (I actually really like them considering how little time I spent on them adkgjg)

Left: Aka’avank, the god of the sun.  Always depicted upside down and with a long neck, usually where he is devouring the sun to make way for Ratii and the night.

Center: Ava, the god of slavery.  Always depicted facing upwards, hailing Ava’s Eye (which is the brightest star in the sky).  As the main god of Aval’n, Ava is depicted with longer horns and a larger tail fan.

Right: Ratii’avank, the god of slavery.  Like Aka, Ratii is depicted facing downwards, usually curled around the moon.  He’s usually lankier than the other two as well.

I know I said I was gonna share nakey fae but I realized that I’m gonna be tagging people in this post and I doubt all of them wanna see nakey fae, so if you wanna find out if the carpet matches the drapes go here.

That aside I have very little excuse as to WHY I did yet ANOTHER fae design height chart beyond “I like drawing fae” and “I did give them minor redesigns” and also maybe “they’re in colour this time!”  At this point, you could probably track my art progress via the fae design charts I’ve done over the past 2-3 years.

Also I’m apologizing on behalf of Ashe, who decided they not only wanted a tattoo, but several nipple piercings (but only on...3 nipples...).  Being that I’m merely the author, I have no control over my characters, especially this little monster.

But yeah.  I wanted to make the fae just a little bit more inhuman, a little bit more colourful, and tweak their markings a lil bit.  Nothing else has really changed.

Tumblr bullshit aside I’m back to my usual bullshit, now featuring three races from Esurience that I barely talk about and have only kind of designed

The first are the orthros who used to have two heads but I changed stuff and now it no longer works u.u but I did combine my desire to have hyena bois and my desire to have husky bois into one to create: hyena was big husky tail.

Second are the tengu but I ended up using a lot of tengu ideas for my elves in Priscilliam, so I decided to lean into the bird gorilla idea.  They do look a bit plain so I’ll probably play with the design? Or make these the female design and have males be extravagant a la real ass birds

And the last are sea fae (shhh don’t tell Catkin they’re real) and I?? Really like this design tbh.

Esurience posts? On my blog???  It’s more likely than you think

Okay that aside I found some of my old notes on dragons and decided to take another stab at their designs, this time featuring COLOUR and GREATER dragons.  I love the design process for creatures and characters, and seeing how much they change with every drawing.  The lesser sky dragon hasn’t changed much, but the lesser sea and earth ones did and they look so much nicer

The greater dragons are all the ones on top and the lesser are the ones on the bottom.

Some Thoughts on Magic

Holy shit.  Okay.  Holy shit.  Thoughts, um.  Have some thoughts about magic because I’m thinking and I have ideas and I’m fucking excited.  A lot of this is spur of the moment so, uh, bear with me.

So magic in Esurience is a thing that most creatures produce in some form or another.  It’s not life essence, but in some creatures it can determine health and, if damaged or altered, can lead to degradation and inevitably death.  The more magic a creature has, the more dangerous it is to alter that magic in any way, but the harder it is to alter in the first place.

That’s why Augurn, a disease that can strip a person (or any creature) of their magic is so dangerous.  In Solvan, it almost always kills.

Point is, though, a lot of creatures produce it.  Some sapient races, such as humans and giants, do not produce any magic and are thus immune to diseases such as Augurn (though they can act as carriers).  Magic has some passive abilities that aid the creature, but spells need a focus to be performed.

So dragons are able to shapeshift.  Believe it or not, this counts as a passive ability; if you remove a dragon’s focus, it does not lose the ability to shapeshift.  It just can’t perform spells.  So you can live without a focus: the Solvani, which don’t have natural foci, are a prime example of that.  That’s why they need wands and shit while dragons and fae etc do not.

I’m mostly just...giving a little background on magic and its sort of function in this universe.  It’s not an external force, it’s produced by living creatures, and it provides a lot of energy.

Here’s what I’m getting at: this energy can be harnessed.  It has to be able to be harnessed!  And who’s harnessing it?  Surprisingly, not the Sovlani.  Creatures with magic are sacred, and the only ones that aren’t and have enough magic to be useful are the Solvani themselves.  Solvan’s got a lot of shit going on, but using their own people to fuel their country?  That ain’t one of them.

Actually, this is part of why they have so much plant life and the bees and whatnot, but that’s for another post.

The Ordenians don’t produce magic, though, and they sure as hell don’t give much of a fuck about the things that do, the Sovlani included.  The Solvani especially.  The fae get a pass because SOMEONE has to mine those mountains metals and the fae will trade that shit away for stupidly low prices, ie a bit of fur and maybe some jewelry.

The Solvani aren’t allies, though, so what better use for them than as living batteries?

The majority of magic they mine can come from dragon bones.  Both lesser and greater dragons, and hell just a variety of other creatures, retain the magic they died with.  And trust me, you can get a lot of mcfuckin’ magic out of one greater dragon corpse.  A lot of mcfuckin’ magic.  But it’s a finite resource; dragons aren’t born often and they don’t die often either, and the Ordenians are using up what they have a whole heck of a lot faster than that cycle.

Solvani, however, are not a finite resource.  Especially if you’re capturing them, imprisoning them, breeding them.  No wonder Orden and Solvan are at war all the time.  Fuck.  Shit.  And just imagine the war machines littering the landscape on either side of the border, still leaking whatever magic left in their metal husks...

I showed you lesser dragons the other day, now get ready for greater dragons!  They’re bigger, much more powerful, and practically immortal (no one’s ever heard of a dragon dying of old age).  Greater dragons expend so much energy in their main forms that they either sleep the majority of the time or roam the world in the shape of something else, being the master shapeshifters they are.

This one’s an air dragon!  Actually, specifically it’s Nalaki in her dragon form, which she hasn’t actually taken since she was young.  I oughta do a size comparison one day, but her head is a bit bigger than a large van.  In comparison, lesser dragons are about as big as a greater dragon’s head.

Okay I’m gonna make that post I wanted to about the fae and I will in sec but first I wanna show you guys the lesser dragons because I’m OBSESSED with them right now.  Which is funny cus as far as anyone’s concerned, lesser dragons have been extinct for over a thousand years.

The world of Esurience considers there to be only three elements instead our four: air, earth, and water.  Fire’s considered a subset of air, IF it’s considered at all.  Most of these philosophies on the elements from the fact that there are three different types of dragons, both lesser and greater.  In the order you see above are earth, water, and air.

While lesser dragons ARE powerful, they are indeed the lesser of the two.  Greater dragons are vastly more powerful.  If you’d consider them gods, think of lesser dragons as demigods.

Designs are subject to change, but the air dragon probably isn’t going to change too much (it’s EASILY my favourite of the three).
