Good news for once, Almodovar is making his "answer to Brokeback Mountain" with a Western in which Ethan Hawke plays a sheriff named Jake, while Pedro Pascal will be the gunslinger Silva, and the characters live on opposing sides of the desert. The pair haven’t seen each other in 25 years. “So one of them travels through the desert to find the other,” Almodóvar said. “There will be a showdown between them, but really the story is very intimate.” Source: https://www.indiewire.com/2022/06/pedro-almodovar-western-ethan-hawke-pedro-pascal-1234737020/

A few brief notes on some films I watched recently-ish (i.e. within the last few months)
Strange Way of Life - A short feature, but I'm kind of stunned that I've not seen anyone talk about it. I mean it's directed by Pedro Almodóvar and has Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal playing gay cowboys. You people should be making .gif sets. It's rather slight and a little out there, but it's pretty good, I enjoyed it.
Poor Things - Mixed thoughts on this one, I like Yorgos Lanthimos but I think this might be one of his weaker films. It drags somewhat in the middle third despite strong performances all around. It has a fantastic visual flair, and a stellar soundtrack, but there is something off about it that is keeping me from declaring it a favourite. It's not the "pedophile apologia" discourse, which I disagree with even if I can see where it's coming from. I might have to stew with it a bit, I do think it was also meant to be deliberately uncomfortable in places. Still, it's a disappointment for me after The Favourite, which was a masterpiece.
Blood Sucking Freaks - Why did I watch this?
O-Bi, O-Ba: Koniec cywilizacji - There is something about the temperament and cultural heritage of Poles that makes them the best purveyors of post-apocalyptic fiction and media. Soviet-era Polish sci-fi always gets high marks from me though (see also: On the Silver Globe, The Hourglass Sanitarium)
Killers of the Flower Moon - Scorsese's best film. Left me filled with a deep sorrow and rage; It's devastating and beautiful. The radio show ending is one of the most cutting and brilliant twists ever committed to celluloid.
The Souvenir: Part II - Altogether weaker than the first part, I still enjoyed it. You should really watch them both though, Joanna Hogg is great.
The Holdovers - One of the most perfect films ever made. It had me openly weeping. Delightful.
Dinner in America - If this had come out at some point in the '90s it would be considered a punk cult classic along the lines of SLC Punk or Ghost World. Loved it.
Gone Girl - Okay I finally watched this ten years after the fact with vague memories of the online discourse of 2014 on sites like Jezebel that proclaimed Rosamund Pike's character a girlboss and declared that she was entirely justified in everything and all I have to say is, what the fuck. Jesus. It's really good though.
No Tears for the Damned - I need to stop watching weird grindhouse shit that Vinegar Syndrome decides to put out, because whoof buddy. A few interesting shots of Vegas in the '60s before it got all family friendly.
The Zone of Interest - It took me a good five minutes to clue into the the fact that all of the "pops" in the background were gunshots as they executed people. That's when my stomach started to churn. The only good Holocaust film ever made (actually let me amend that, the only good fictional Holocaust film ever made as Lanzmann's Shoah exists), as it's the only one to really grapple with the irredeemable reality of its subject matter.

The promise of a gay Western starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke and directed by Pedro Almodóvar proved to be catnip to Cannes audiences when the short film Strange Way of Life premiered at the festival Wednesday. Not even a steady rain kept the crowds away—despite having to wait in line, getting drenched, for close to an hour.
When Almodóvar took the stage to introduce the film—one of his few forays into English-language cinema—he was joined by Hawke and a quartet of hunky actors (among them Manu Rios, from the hit Spanish teen soap Elite). It all seemed to set the stage for something vivid and sensual in the style of so many other Almodóvar films.
And it was borne out, albeit in limited ways, in the actual film. Hawke plays a small-town sheriff, Jake, who is investigating the murder of his sister-in-law at the hands of her lover. Pascal is Silva, an old friend of Jake’s who rides into town for shadowy purposes. At least part of his intention is romantic: Jake and Silva had a two-month fling in Mexico some 25 years previous, a brief and wonderful giving-in to forbidden desire that seems to have haunted the two men ever since. Silvan wants to pick up where they left off, while Jake halfheartedly resists.
In that sense, Strange Way of Life is a melodrama, with lots of heavy talk about the sweet, erotic gleam of the past and all the bitter compromises of the present. Hawke and Pascal find the right tone to handle all this florid emoting, with Almodóvar mostly getting out their way. Though he does let Alberto Igelsias’s swelling score rush in at the lovelorn pair, a dash of old Hollywood flare at once mournful and swooning.
There is eventually a shootout, of sorts, but it’s not played for fun. And it’s ultimately in service of a poignant conclusion. Strange Way of Life cuts through its grizzle to arrive at something soft and sentimental, a vision of how Jake and Silva could have been had they allowed passion to win out over convention and the harsh strictures of life in the old world.
There is a small bit of sexy stuff too, particularly a dreamy and wine-soaked flashback to what was perhaps the beginning of Jake and Silva’s first carnal release. It’s brief, just like the sexual epiphany flashback in Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory. Also helping raise the vapors level are those handsome Spanish fellows, who are barely in the film but add to the film’s heady, hot-and-bothered air nonetheless.
It’s a kick to see Almodóvar’s gay gaze applied to a Western, though at only 31 minutes, the film wants us leaving quite a lot more. One hopes that this might be a mere demo reel for a full feature film; Almodóvar has said he is gaining confidence directing in English, so perhaps he might feel ready to pursue a more substantial story Pascal and Hawk. There’s more to be explored here, more conventions of the Western to be turned on their heads—or, rather, expanded to include new narratives. With Strange Way of Life, Almodóvar, such a full-throated and singular filmmaker, proves just the right man to lead that revolutionary charge.

I will be waiting to see if Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal receive even HALF of the harassment, bullying and hostility that Benedict Cumberbatch got for playing a Gay role in The Power of The Dog. Isn't this taking work from LGBTQ actors, according to so many Hollywood organizations? Will Sam Elliott feel the need to protect the honor of cowboys? Also interested to see how much flack is thrown for this being filmed in another country.

Pedro finally doing something gay, something Cowboy, something with Almodóvar.
But because this world is not perfect, they cast Ethan Hawke (who, don’t get me wrong, is good), instead of Fassy who has already played an implicitly gay cowboy.
OK, Ethan already has gay cowboy experience. But I still want that Fassy-Pedro thing to happen, and I think Almodóvar would have been an ideal director.
I guess I will have to hope for Steve McQueen. And channel on starting to Publish my Shame Queer Fanfiction Sequel here.

Love & Anarchy film festival started brilliantly with the short films ”Strange Way of Life” and ”The Human Voice”. I liked both, especially Strange Way of Life in which Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke play dramatic gays who have to spill blood before they can be together (lol).
The first film was about a woman dealing with the loss (death?) of a loved one, and although it was implied the loved one was a man, I kind of interpreted that it could have been a woman. The apartment/the set is full of art work of naked women, and throughout the film the lost loved one is referred to in a gender neutral way (until the very end). The suit on the bed could have very well been worn by a woman (a power lesbian). Also, the main character talks about how she was an experiment for them; they could have been a married woman who wanted to try a relationship with a woman. Also, I think the character is dead. The mc talks to them on the phone but she might be imagining it. Why else would she have the other person’s dog, and their suit, and all their things.
So yes, the film leaves lots of room for personal interpretation.
Anyway, I obviously went to this screening for the second film, first and foremost. AND OBVIOUSLY I LIKED IT. Pedro Pascal in a gay cowboy movie, who wouldn’t like it? Unfortunately, the film isn’t explicit, although I expected that it wouldn’t be. But I kind of wish we at least got to see the two lovers kiss, as older men, that is (so basically Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke making out). There is a hot kiss scene between the younger versions of the characters, but the intimate scene between the older versions of the characters is just fade-to-black sort of stuff. Well. At least we got to see Pedro Pascal’s butt. LMAO.
Also, the story is intense, and it has a happy ending (at least that’s how I interpret it). And it was implied Pedro’s character bottomed, haha. SO YEAH I LOVED IT.
