Mickey Garcia loves the feeling of flying. Getting to fly with Reuben, with his best friend? That might be the best feeling in the world.

Sure, Mickey’s not a pilot. He leaves that part of the job up to Reuben, no problem at all. But he loves being up in the air and flying in an F-18. Flying in any jet really. He just loves flying. Working as a team with Reuben, calling out what he sees on the radar and physically looking out of the cockpit to catch anything the radar might miss.

But his favorite moments are when they’re flying a patrol and just get to take in the world around them, looking out across the horizon. No matter what time of day it is, no matter where in the world they are, there’s a certain beauty Mickey finds in those moments. He and Reuben both fall silent, just taking in the views from the cockpit and feeling the joy of flying like they can’t during training or the more intense parts of a patrol. It feels like just the two of them up there, like they aren’t connected via radio to the tower and ground crew.

Mickey wishes he could spend his whole life in those moments, up in the air with Reuben and taking in the natural beauty of the world. He feels invincible in those moments, feels so much joy that it’s almost overwhelming. He never wants those moments to end, the moments that happen right at the beginning or end of a patrol.

But they always do. Payback takes them through the routine of their patrol, talking to their wingman and the tower, or he gets ready to land and Mickey’s snapped back to reality.

Mickey smiles though, he has the time of his life up in the air with his best friend. Those moments where the world falls away and it’s just him and Payback and the beauty of nature, those are the best. Mickey treasures those forever and will always hold onto those memories, those moments, no matter what else happens.
