The funniest (like actually funny) joke in the LMJ anime was Emiliana making Kat and Ernest believe she had a tragic backstory of her mother leaving her. Like the two of them, who are both orphans with their own tragic pasts of losing their mothers (which Kat only discovered recently), are full on weeping, only for Emiliana to pull the rug out from under them.

The headstones of DeForest Kelley’s parents (Ernest and Clora) and obituaries of his mother and older brother (by three years) Ernest (who was 71 when he died). His dad passed away on December 1st, just a few months after Star Trek premiered in September, 1966. Did he get to see his son in his own series?

You know, though, there is something that Layton Mystery Journey did that I really like, and that’s how they handled Ernest and his reveal.

Because it would have been so easy to make him disingenuous. I mean, the twist is that he’s been duplicitous… but he’s never been insincere. He was not getting close to Kat to find an adjudicator for his little game, or to get close to the Dragons or anything like that. No, it’s sincere. His feelings for her are honest.

Yes, he lied about his name. He didn’t tell her everything. He kept things from her. But despite all of that… he is still just one of the most genuine characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to know, and it is a delight that the game recognizes that, even having Katrielle expressly recognize that despite his actions, he is still a good boy.

Having completed the Shiro and Asugi supports I’ve concluded that the funniest possible outcome for them is if they started a casual no real labels attached fwb/open relationship because both of them would be genuinely so casual about it but it would drive their dads absolutely insane. They’d be so uncomfortable and the boys would find that so fucking funny.

Can you imagine how pressed Saizo and Ryoma would be if they asked their kids what was going on between them and they responded with “idk, we’re just doing whatever”? Like, it would be bad enough if they were dating but they don’t even have the decency to commit to that.
