@steeleidolon continued from here: xx
Despite the quiet of the stranger’s approach, one furry ear still turned in the aspiring First’s direction but the feline didn’t tear his gaze away from the view beyond the glass. It meant that it surprised him some when he felt the warm weight of the arm settle around his shoulders and his gaze focused on their reflections rather than drifting into the middle distance.
His ears lowered at the comment but he sank in against the stranger’s side nonetheless, seeming to melt in against the freely offered comfort, something he wasn’t typically gifted.
He seemed to shrink in on himself a little, afraid of accepting the comfort in case it came at a cost but craving it so desperately all the same. Even when the sharp stink of the labs and the chemicals therein clung to the man, the Miqo’te found himself too exhausted just existing to even consider denying himself the rare comfort.
“Of course it wouldn’t be that easy,” he finally replied, though it was unclear whether he’d seriously considered it or if he was remarking more on things in general - because when was it ever that easy?
He rubbed absently at his arms, devoid of the tubes or electrodes he was sometimes hooked up to but still baring the evidence of their use in red marks left behind, a bruise here, a scratch there. Such was the life of a lab rat.
“You should be resting, no?” he observed, finally having torn his gaze away from the speckle of rain against the window to take in the stranger and having already noted from the sound of his voice and the scents that clung to him that he likely wasn’t long out of the medbay or the labs. Subject FE03 was no stranger to it.
“Unless the labs have driven you too to consider your own mortality...”

Angeal  had  grown  used  to  submitting  himself  to  a  myriad  of  tests  in  order  to  satiate  the  seemingly  endless  curiosity  of  ShinRa  scientists.  Usually,  he  had  time  to  mentally  prepare  to  be  poked  and  prodded  with  needles  and  medical  instruments.  This  time,  he  was  quickly  ushered  into  the  examination  area  as  soon  as  he  arrived  from  a  long,  arduous  mission  in  Wutai.  The  warrior  had  gone  days  without  adequate  food  or  sleep  and  was  hoping  to  recover  as  soon  as  he  returned  to  Midgar.  He  had  no  such  luck,  and  soon  he  began  feeling  a  little  faint.  The  feeling  was  a  bit  unfamiliar  to  the  commander.  SOLDIERs  were  blessed  —  or  rather  enhanced  —  with  superior  healing  and  metabolic  capabilities,  but  even  they  had  their  limits.  Angeal  suppressed  a  shiver  as  the  medical  technitian  before  him  inserted  a  large  needle  into  his  forearm  to  draw  copious  amounts  of  blood.
He  was  too  wrapped  up  with  dealing  with  the  medical  tests  being  conducted  to  notice  another  presence  in  the  laboratory.  The  feline-like  figure  approached  him  silently  before  draping  a  warm  blanket  over  his  frame.  Angeal  recognized  him  as  Subject  FE03,  a  new  experiment  created  by  Professor  Hojo  that  was  meant  to  compliment  the  abilities  of  ShinRa’s  SOLDIERs.  Outside  of  battle,  the  two  hadn’t  interacted  much,  so  the  warrior  was  surprised  by  the  kind  gesture.  Angeal  closed  his  eyes  for  a  moment,  enjoying  the  throw’s  warmth  before  addressing  him.
❝  Thank  you.  I  really  appreciate  this.  ❞
The  chevalier  gave  an  empathetic  smile  as  he  watched  another  scientist  escort  the  subject  away,  apparently  because  he  was  due  for  a  round  of  injections.  He  wished  he  could  return  the  favor,  and  vowed  to  do  so  when  the  time  was  right.

Visit to the McCord Museum – Indigenous Voices of Today: Knowledge, Trauma, Resilience
The McCord Museum, as a side activity to the exposition, has put 10 different ways to encourage Indigenous communities, culture and knowledge. One of them that I decided
to take a part in is learning a few words from an Indigenous language. I am doing this one because I feel like languages are what makes people comfortable: when someone speaks your mother tongue to you unexpectedly, it is one of the best ways to make people at ease and show them that you care about them and their culture. It’s one of the reasons why I learned a few basic words in sign language (ASL), and it helped me out one time (see next post for that story).
It also made me think, during the exhibition specifically, of someone saying during one of the videos during the ‘trauma’ part of the exhibit that when they came home, there was a gap directly in their families: their grandmothers would speak their language to them, while the speaker would talk in French or in English because that is what they learned in school. It lead to a lot of identity crises, generational gaps, language barriers and prevented them from feeling close to their own family members. Even though it doesn’t seem like much, a language defines how we express ourselves, how we see the world: each language has its own perspective on the world that surrounds them. I want to be able to communicate, understand them and relate to them as much as I can.
I used this website (https://www.firstvoices.com/explore/FV/sections/Data/Kanehsat%C3%A0:ke/Mohawk/Kanien%27k%C3%A9ha%20(Mohawk)%20%5BEng%5D/learn/words?category=106df8ec-fe03-487a-835d-5ac14f9d1769&page=6&pageSize=10) to learn some words in Kanien’kéha, which is the language that Mohawks speak. I chose this one because it is the Indigenous community that surrounds the island of Montreal or Tiohti:àke. What I noticed right off the bat is that most of the categories of words are either related to family and one’s relations to other people, or they are words to describe things found in nature (animals, plants, landscapes, medicinal plants, etc.) I looked firsthand at the human relation category, in which I learned the word for “mother” (ake’nisténha). Then I browsed a bit more, and was intrigued by the section named “spiritual beliefs”, that only contains two words: pipe (kanèn:nawen) and sundance (karàhkwa kanónnia). I love learning this language, but will need to make a habit out of studying it if I truly want to absorb it, which is now a new goal of mine.
