Do you think a FAUKUS alliance instead of a AUKUS one would have been a better move ? As a French citizen I remember how the submarine deal was taken badly and it seems like a huge mistake to put aside a third nuclear and military power that has interest in the region (New Caledonia and Fr Polynesia). Now that time has passed and with the current geopolitical state, what are your thoughts on this ? Thank you as always! French Anon
I've always heard it called FRAUKUS, not FAUKUS. Anyway, I wrote about this back when it happened and potential ways for the United States to increase their partnership with France.
Given the distance between Australia and the potential flashpoint being near China, nuclear submarines made more sense than the diesel-electric submarines in the previous French deal - the ability to go long distances silently fits better with Australia's strategic needs whereas a diesel submarine would be more useful for a closer power like Japan where the distance isn't a factor. Then you figure the cost overruns and while I do understand the French viewpoint, from the Australian viewpoint, the AUKUS submarine deal was a more sensible alternative.
I think France has a lot to offer, has power projection, and has aligned goals in the Pacific that a FRAUKUS alliance, with intelligence sharing and defensive coordination, is a solid move. Given cooling relations between Europe and China, though economic considerations give the United States much more room to be tougher on China, I think that France could be a very valuable partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
Thanks for the question, French Anon.

Joe Biden meets Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman again in India to send a final threat regarding the new Saudi deal The latest news from Saudi Arabia, the relations between Saudi Arabia and America, and new attempts at Saudi-Israeli normalization
This new episode of Samari channel devotes its time to discussing the latest developments in normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel, sponsored by the US administration of President Joe Biden.
And starting with the American Axios website, which said that the White House has prepared for a new meeting between US President Biden and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the sidelines of the G20 summit, which will be held in India on September 9 and 10, to be the first meeting between them since the Jeddah summit in July of this year. The past, which was followed by repeated declines in Saudi-American relations, due to Riyadh's strict policies in oil production below the OPEC+ bloc, in addition to the continuous Saudi rapprochement with China. Axios said that the meeting with Biden and Bin Salman will be a new American attempt to convince the Saudi crown prince of the benefits of normalization with Israel, instead of the recent Saudi rapprochement with Iran.
And Hebrew reports had indicated a change in the position of the far-right government led by Benjamin Netanyahu on the Saudi conditions for normalization, especially those related to the peaceful nuclear program. Netanyahu's envoy to Washington, Ron Dermer, told US officials, whom he met a few days ago, that allowing the Saudis to possess a nuclear program under Western monitoring would be better than the kingdom resorting to China to obtain the same technology.
On the other hand, the American Business Insider website said that Saudi Arabia is close to concluding a huge deal with France regarding the purchase of Rafale fighters and Scalp missiles, in addition to French armored vehicles. The episode tends to seek Badin, during his meeting with bin Salman at the G-20 summit, to dissuade the crown prince from the deal with Paris and to compensate Riyadh with American F-15 fighters. And if this is done, this will be a new American strike against its NATO ally France, after the nuclear submarine deal with Australia in which America and Britain replaced France, in addition to the divergence of views between Washington and Paris on the issue of the Niger coup.
#Saudi Arabia #America #latest news
Are we witnessing a new insult to Joe Biden in his new meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in India, or will it be a peace meeting? This is what we will discuss in the episode "The Shock of the Crown Prince" on the summary channel. Watch to know the story from the beginning

US navy secretary says Australian multination military exercise demonstrates unity to China
By Associated Press 7:41am Jul 22, 2023
The major multination military training exercise launched in Australia sends a message to China that American's allies are cooperating to defend their security and democratic values, US Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said.
Talisman Sabre began in 2005 as a bjennial joint exercise between the United States and Australia but has expanded this year to 13 nations and more than 30,000 military personnel.
Del Toro and deputy prime minister Richard Marles welcomed ever-closer closer bilateral military ties as they launched the exercise at a Sydney naval base.
Tumblr media

Del Toro said land, sea and air military platforms are becoming increasingly complicated and allies need to exercise together to be able to operate as a single task force.
"The most important message that China can take from this exercise and anything that our allies and partners do together is that we are extremely tied by the core values that exist among our many nations together," Del Toro told reporters.
"We are prepared to actually operate together in defence of our national security interests and in defence of the core values that we all share," he added.
Marles said more than 800 military vehicles will cross a single-mobile wharf to be deployed at the Queensland state coastal town of Bowen during the two-week exercise.
"It's going to be the most significant logistics exercise that we will see between Australia and the United States in Australia since the Second World War," Marles said.
"All of this is actually building muscle memory between our two countries defense forces, is building comfort and familiarity and obviously not just between Australia and the United States but the other 11 countries that will be participating," Marles added.
Del Toro and Marles were upbeat about progress on the so-called AUKUS deal under which the United States and Britain will provide Australia with a fleet of submarines powered by US nuclear technology.

The closer military relationship will be underscored on Saturday when USS Canberra is commissioned in Sydney.
The Independence-variant littoral combat ship, built by Australian manufacturer Austal, will become the first US warship to be commissioned in a foreign-port.
The original USS Canberra was a cruiser launched in 1943 named after the Australian cruiser HMAS Canberra that was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1942 with a loss of 193 lives while supporting US Marines landings on the Solomon Islands.
The Australian warship was named for the Australian capital.
The Solomons are again a security concern for the United States and its allies over recent security agreements the South Pacific nation has signed with Beijing.
Chinese spy ships have been shadowing Talisman Sabre exercises since 2017.
Australian Army Lieutenant General Greg Bilton said a Chinese spy ship had been contacted in the Coral Sea off Australia's northeast coast on Thursday and was expected to move into the exercise area.
"They've done this for a number of years. We're well prepared for it," Bilton said.
Fiji, France, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Britain, Canada and Germany are taking part in this year's exercise that ends on August 4.
The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are attending the exercise as observers.

Germany's Bid for India's Submarine Project: A Potential Game Changer for Naval Power and Regional Stability
Tumblr media
Hey, tumblr peeps! Have you heard about the latest development in India’s submarine project? It seems that Germany is pushing hard to win a $5.2 billion deal to build six stealth submarines for the Indian Navy under Project-75. This is a big deal because India has been relying heavily on Russian military hardware for decades, but now it’s looking for more options and partners in the wake of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly bid for the project, which involves building six advanced conventional submarines with better sensors, weapons and an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system that allows them to stay underwater longer. The German defense minister Boris Pistorius visited India this week and met with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh to discuss the deal and other strategic issues.
This is not the first time that Germany and India have collaborated on submarines. In the late 1980s, India sourced four submarines from Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) of Germany, two of which were assembled at MDL in Mumbai. HDW has since been acquired by TKMS. However, the project ran into some delays and controversies due to allegations of corruption and technical glitches.
The current project has also faced some challenges due to certain specifications demanded by the Indian Navy, which were not acceptable to some of the submarine manufacturers. Initially, TKMS from Germany, Navantia from Spain, Daewoo of South Korea, Rosoboronexport/Rubin Design Bureau from Russia and France’s Naval Group were in the race. But the requirement of a proven AIP system ruled out the French and Spanish companies, while the Russians withdrew from the tender citing unrealistic expectations. The Koreans also showed little interest in the deal, leaving only the Germans in the fray.
However, even the Germans had some reservations about the contractual clauses and technical parameters. But with the intervention of the German government and the revision of its arms control laws, TKMS agreed to bid. The Indian Navy also approached the Ministry of Defense for relaxation of certain specifications and extension of the deadline for responding to the request for proposal (RFP).
The deal is not final yet, as there are still some negotiations and approvals required. The German defense minister said that there are also other competitors in the game, especially the French who have a strong presence in India’s naval sector. France’s Naval Group has already built six Scorpene-class submarines for the Indian Navy under Project-75 at MDL, the last of which was launched in November 2022.
India’s submarine fleet is aging and needs urgent modernization. The country currently operates 15 conventional submarines and two nuclear-powered submarines (one leased from Russia and one indigenously built). Most of these are due for decommissioning in the next decade. India also plans to build six nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) and six nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) under its ambitious Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) program.
India’s submarine project is part of its broader strategy to enhance its maritime capabilities and security in the Indian Ocean region, where it faces challenges from China and Pakistan. India has also been strengthening its naval partnerships with other countries like France, UAE, Japan, Australia and the US through joint exercises and agreements.
What do you think about this deal? Do you think Germany will be able to clinch it? How will it affect India’s naval power and regional stability? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

New Zealand Following bilateral talks with Anthony Albanese in Brisbane on Sunday, Mr Hipkins threw his support behind Australia’s plan to acquire nuclear-powered submarines from the US and Britain after he received assurances the deal would not impact Australia’s commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. “New Zealand, like Australia, is clear-eyed that there is a challenging strategic environment in the Indo-Pacific region,” Mr Hipkins said. “We both want a stable, secure and resilient region. And New Zealand agrees with the AUKUS partners that the collective objective needs to be the delivery of peace and stability and preservation of an international rules-based system in our region. The United States said it had evacuated its embassy staff from Sudan and France said it was evacuating diplomats, as eight days of battles between rival military factions that have triggered a humanitarian crisis showed little sign of let-up. The newly announced AUKUS alliance has offended the US’s close ally France, as the country feels backstabbed and betrayed. As the US and Australian deal has sent the earlier concluded French -Australian deal for submarines packing, France is angry with the United States and, being a long-term US ally, for all the right reasons. Australia pledged to France to buy their submarine technology for almost $40 billion in 2016. With the initiation of AUKUS, the earlier deal stands null and void. Now, the money is going to the United States for its nuclear-powered submarine deal. These crises are not meager, considering the spat it initiated in Europe. All the European Union is backing France against the United States, which is promising to give tough times to both Australia and the United States if the alliance stands. [caption id="attachment_9251" align="aligncenter" width="900"] French President Emanuel Macron is angry on his US counterpart Joe Biden's strategy to abandon them for the nuclear submarine deal with Australia.[/caption] France and the US Damaging Relations can Kick off a Domino Effect in Europe France and the US relations have starting intensifying to an unprecedented extent for the first time since the end of World War II. The two countries enjoyed wonderful bilateral relations both in terms of military and finance regimes. But this disagreement is likely to stand until or unless a settlement is made. The crisis is so intense that France has even recalled its ambassadors back from Washington and Canberra. The country even canceled the celebration in the event that was supposed to be conducted over the US and France’s growing ties. All of this happened within a week of the announcing of the alliance. This US and France tussle will not stay between the two countries only. The European Union has already jumped into the matter, with increasing calls to reevaluate their priorities and view their allies. Due to the bond between the EU, the betrayal of one country is being considered the betrayal of the whole group. So, the group is likely to come up with a counter plan soon. [caption id="attachment_9249" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] France is a crucial player in Indo-Pacific region as it owns huge islands in the waters with its residents and military personnel stationed there. If the US wants a success in this region, it must not abandon France unilaterally.[/caption] Canceling France Will Backfire in the Indo-Pacific Waters The tensions did not end here. France is irked over the United States for its exclusion from its Indo-Pacific strategy. The AUKUS alliance is specifically made to counter growing aggression in the Indo-Pacific region. However, making this alliance can make the sufferings worse for the US Indo-Pacific strategy. France is one of the most important global players in the Indo-Pacific region, controlling a large number of territories and islands in the sea. The country occupies almost 11.7 million kilometers in the Pacific Ocean and South Indian Ocean. The French-controlled territories in the region house almost 1.5 million residents and more than 8000 troops, not to mention that the area is the home of some exclusive economic activities by France. Hence this deal to offend France is likely to trigger an offense from the European countries as well, where they can reevaluate their strategy for the US and its allies in the region. Now France can feel closer to China compared to the US in its Indo-Pacific policy. Both France and China have common ambitions now in the region to dilute the US presence in the waters, which can help them come closer to one another. Going forward, this military alliance is also expected to conduct military and naval exercises to demonstrate its military might in the Indo-Pacific waters. So, France can be the biggest hurdle in allowing that show because of its powerful presence in the waters. The United States needs to reconsider
its approach towards the changing power structure in the waters of the Indo-Pacific region. Without French support, the US does not stand a chance to dominate the most important region of the contemporary world.   Final Thoughts This is just the beginning of the new alliance, and revising it in the initial stages can help the US to retain its most important ally of Europe. Otherwise, if a trust gap is created, China and Russia can step forward with France to form an anti-US power bloc to deal with the new alliance in the Indo-Pacific region. French reaction is enough to tell the United States that the country is not going to settle the mess easily. Just before the global leaders are gathering in the outskirts of the United Nations for the annual meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, this development is surely worrying for the US foreign interests.

Miley Accuses China of Aggression
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), July 24, 3022.--Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 64-year-old Gen. Mark Miley accused China of more aggressions in the Pacific Rim, especially in the South China Sea, where the Peoples Liberation Army [PLA] has built naval bases on shallow shoals in the Spratly Islands.  Miley claims that Pacific Rim countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei and the Philippines, all say that China has intercepted vessels operating in international waters. China rejected a 2015 court ruling in the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague, saying the Philippines had every right to patrol international waters in the South China Sea.  Since China rejected the Hague’s ruling, things have been tense in the South China Sea with Beijing routinely monitoring safe passage through international waters, all claimed by Beijing.  Beijing thinks that the South China Sea is part of Mainland China.
Beijing—along with France that lost a $50 billion submarine contract with Australia--was furious when the U.S. inked a nuclear submarine deal with Canberra designed to give Australia the range to patrol the South China Sea.  “The message is the Chinese military, in the air and at sea, have become significantly more aggressive in this particular region,” said Miley, asking his staff to compile a list of China’s aggressive actions in the region.  Miley’s too close to the water to see the big picture that the Biden administration has antagonized Beijing to the point of conflict since taking office Jan. 20, 2021.  At a get-to-know-you summit March 18, 2021 in Anchorage, Alaska, Secretary of State Tony Blinken and 45-year-old National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan accused Beijing of genocide against Muslim Uyghurs in Western China.  Senior Chinese officials, led by Wang Yi, said the U.S. abuses human rights.
Miley doesn’t help U.S. foreign policy pandering to Pacific Rim countries complaining about Chinese aggression.  Biden has created such a foul relationship with China, it’s close to coming to blows.  Biden didn’t help things May 23 saying that he would defend Taiwan against the Mainland Chinese invasion.  Since 97-year-old former President Jimmy Carter signed the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, the U.S. agreed to recognize only one China, the one in Beijing.  Biden’s May 23 remarks ends nearly 70-years of “strategic ambiguity” by the U.S. government with respect to protecting Taiwan.  When Carter signed the Taiwan Relations Act it ended the 1954 Sino-American Mutual Defense Treaty that had the U.S. officially committed to defending Taiwan against the Chinese invasion.  Biden’s publc remarks rang a loud bell in Beijing, infuriating 69-year-old Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Xi doesn’t want to hear anything about the U.S. government supplying lethal weapons to Taiwan or, worse yet, agreeing to take military action against the Peoples Republic of China [PRC] to defend Taiwan.  Biden finds himself squeezed in a vise, already in a proxy war in Ukraine against the Russian Federation.  No one could have imagined that the U.S would be at war with the Russian Federation.  No one in the European Union or NATO wants to see war on the European Continent.  But Biden decided unilaterally March 26 in Warsaw Poland, to talk openly about getting rid of 69-year-old Russian President Vladimir Putin.  China backs Russia’s War against Ukraine, because the PRC blames Biden for arming Ukraine to the teeth on the Russian border.  Xi sees the parallel in Taiwan with the U.S. supplying Taipei with advanced U.S. weapons, including F-35 fighter jets.
Xi sees Biden doing the same thing in the Pacific Rim that he did in Ukraine, arming countries against the Russian Federation.  Xi thinks U.S. efforts to bolster Pacific Rim countries as U.S. allies, like Ukraine, violates the delicate balance that existed for years in Indo-China.  Biden, who currently suffers from a bout of Covid-19, said he plans to talk to Xi in the next few weeks.  What does Joe think he’ll be told by Xi, to keep arming Taipei?  Clearly, Biden is on a collision course of a two-front war, one in Ukraine and the other in Taiwan.  “Gen. Lit Zuocheng, China’s Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, told Miley that Beijing has “no room for compromise” when it came to Taiwan.  Miley acts clueless talking about Chinese aggression when the U.S. in currently in a proxy war in Ukraine to topple Putin. Xi understands exactly what’s going on in Ukraine and doesn’t want it to happen in the Pacific Rim.
When 82-year-old House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced she was taking an official Congressional delegation to Taipei, China reacted harshly.  China’s Foreign Minister Spokesman Zhao Lijinan said China would react severely to any attempt by Pelosi to visit Taiwan. Biden said July 18 that the Pentagon told him Pelosi’s upcoming trip to Taiwan was not a good idea.  So Miley keeps accusing Beijing of aggression, while Biden says he plans to talk with Xi in the next few weeks about what?  China’s aggression?   “This is an area in which China is trying to do outreach for their own purposes.  And again, this s concerning because Chins is not doing it just for benign purposes,” Miley said infuriating Beijing.  Miley walks on thin ice slamming China publicly while his boss has the worst diplomatic relations with Beijing since the 1949 Maoist Revolution.
