Who is driving the van in the Adieu Video? Did we ever find out?

when i got this ask, i was like 'duh, ofcourse we kno...wait...what..?"

so i watched the video again, including dissecting the end credits, but there was nothing in those credits at all, and in the video all the guys are in the back

and the few brief shots we see of the cabin, the lights prevent us seeing the driver..

so my conclusion is.... that it must be an uncredited cameo by Rammstein's unofficial 7th member, and the one who would definitely *be* the ringleader if they ever decided to infiltrate the Opera Garnier for real:

also did in fact get to watch the west end cabaret, and i did enjoy it (i live in a world where my mum occasionally visits and takes pity on a poor soul and so we go watch a musical) but i think all of what i was concerned about with it was correct. so pros and cons. or cons and pros, hm... pros and cons...

pros:

sally bowles was spot on -- cara delevigne is currently playing her, but not when i was watching, which im kind of relieved about. im sure she does a good job, but a-list hollywood star and model cara delevigne is going to have to work double-time to convince me she's a struggling overwrought undertalented average british woman (while still belting out those higher notes and being the most captivating character on the stage). i liked the actress who played her A Lot, she tapped into all of that perfectly, and i liked that she took the seemingly impossible middle-ground between a liza minelli and a jane horrocks and was both punky and able to convince me that she wasn't that good at performing in the story, while still giving an actually amazing set of performances

the whole kit kat bar Gang so to speak was amazing, i enjoyed every one of them. they were all fantastic and vibrant, while giving a modern-married-with-classic queer feel in their outfits and introductions that updated the visuals in the opening number to a more overt genderfluidity than ive seen before

the pre-show + interval immersive experience was probably my favourite part of the whole thing. entering down a side entrance into a cellar and seeing performers as you wander through various sections, and then during the latter part of the interval the performers bringing some of the more daring audience members onstage and interacting with the various rows. made it feel like not just a musical, but an actual club

frau schneider and herr schultz were great throughout, my other favourite performances of the show. the place where it found its realism most effectively and of course where the politics is most at the forefront, wonderfully depicted by the two actors

cliff bradshaw is the most thankless role in any iteration, so shoutout to making him pretty likeable -- my guy will never be memorable, but that of course is not the point. he's the camera

cons:

the marketing of being "the most exclusive club in town" was giving a whole vibe of elite, difficult-to-gain-access-to, rich, that just... isn't correct. and i mean, the tickets are fuckn expensive so, it really is all of those things, which was my immediate kneejerk reaction to the show long before i ever watched it: is this show for a queer audience, or is it for people to gawk at queers? (but make it musical theatre and polished, no messy realistic queerness). and you can never know if an audience is majority queer or not, but i will hazard a strong... not. and also a strong "very few people under the age of 35 who would have to really save up to watch this show" as well

to add to this point -- i was watching with my mum, her boyfriend, and my godfather (all middle-class and middle-aged straight people in their own right, but youknow. i suggested the show), and during the interval i asked them about how they felt about the tone so far, mentioning that i found it interesting in contrast to the 1993 version, which was quite grimy-looking, and my godfather said that yeah, it was sultry, but it wasn't cabaret clublike -- and i just. if he noticed that. everything was a bit too polished, and too pretty (with, in my opinion, the exception of the portrayal of sally). i just think it's a fundamental misjudgement of who cabaret is about (club performers and sex workers with no money) and also, in my opinion, who it ought to be for

the emcee... ohhhh the emcee. i mean, okay. i took an instant dislike back when it was edd*e r*dmayne, everyone who knows me knows i think that guy has the charisma of a wet sponge and needs to stop poking his fingers in seminal queer narratives, but the fucking... party hat. this show definitely made it clear that it's not just the actor, it's the way it's put together. funny thing was, one of the ensemble performers (played bobby) took charge during the interval (when the actual emcee is presumably off having a big costume change), and i thought, "now that's the emcee," and it wasn't actually any of the performers' fault. i dont think the emcee actor had the look, but that aside, this show had no idea what to do with the character, it's like they didn't give him any kind of grounding at all. a series of nonsensical costume-changes, popping up haphazardly outside the cabaret (but not with any kind of consistency) a sort of... wheedling, un-directedness to the whole thing. he was disconnected from any kind of time (20th century or today), any kind of place (club, stage, in or out of the cabaret), any kind of anything, and it was the costuming, the way he'd been directed, and the lack of consistency for when he appeared. he was almost meaningless to the story

the politics -- speaking of the emcee -- were really weirdly stripped. the big points are there, it's berlin, people want to party and ignore the nazis, and then two big Moments happen (the engagement party, the rock through the window) that indelibly remind people that antisemitism cannot be ignored, and that this is coming, whether you want it to or not (and eventually it's coming for the denizens of the kit kat club too). but other than that, nothing in the way this was put together felt very cognisant of wanting to either get into the idea of nazism of the 1930s or fascism today. there was a kind of vague effigy performance of "tomorrow belongs to me" with figures that looked like they were saying something about conformity, and at the end of the play everyone is dressed in the same, somewhat bland suit, so the message is... idk. conformity makes the world worse, i guess. beyond that single scene with the swastika revealed at the engagement party, we never see one again, which may have been an attempt to point out how people hide behind the idea of "just politics," but with the way the whole thing was staged (this rich, luxurious location) came off to me like it was letting the audience off the hook -- it's still a story, we're telling it to you as gently as possible. it just felt so timid! all the imagery -- like the emcee himself -- is beautiful and un-grounded, only just enough about something to tell the story without being too disquieting

good example is the money makes the world go around song. the emcee comes up in a goth "harem-like" outfit, with a sort of shiny, rib-cage looking harness, clown make-up, black stormtrooper-esque helmet, loooong shining nails -- there's 5 different things going on here, none of which are grounded, they're just... pretty. give a nod to ideas about wealth, and starvation, and nazis, and (hopefully intentionally) appropriation/exotification, and something queer-esque. look, a man with bedazzled nails singing about how money makes the world go around, at a show where the tickets are fuckn expensive, but he's not singing about that, he's not singing about today, or the past, and in fact the number is so overproduced (all the other performers have taken off their homage-costumes to the 1920s/30s and are now in a generic wavy dress outfit, and they're all over the stage, doing the most, distracting from the words) that you can't take in of the words with what's happening onstage

i hated hated hated those conformist suits at the end. what were they on about???? conformity takes the glitter out of things idk?? fascism. talk about modern day fascism. or hell, lean hard into a story about 1930s fascism if you're not comfortable confronting this audience properly, but just... don't be generic

which also, minor gripe time now, but there's this whole plotline in the musical that's deliberately set up at the beginning -- sally has a beautiful coat. the metaphor of trying to polish up her life on the outside, of refusing to acknowledge the deeper issues, not just with the world, but with herself, that she's poor, she's not entirely sure how long she'll last for or what's coming next, so hey, make it a party and look beautiful... that whole setup is important for when she sells the coat to get an abortion! and they have the setup in this version, but then seemingly forget all about it at the end? the coat they reference isn't the beautiful, expensive fur coat she walks in with in the first act, it's this random suit-coat she's been dressed up in for the finale, it misses the whole point. i say minor gripe, but it does feel like a microcosm of so much of this show. it refuses, ironically, to go any deeper. it still fundamentally wants to make sure the audience is comfortable by defanging as much as possible all the little things that add up to one great big picture

gosh it was long. it was -- with interval -- two hours, forty-five minutes. maybe that's why it felt like it lacked purpose, it seemed like it wanted to pack in every version of the story into one, and again, sally at the centre really makes this obvious, because as much as i think the actress was pitch perfect, i definitely saw the ways this particular version repeated sentiments about her over and over so that she became softer, sweeter, like the rest of it palatable. the most uncomfortable she makes you is during her first performance and everything beyond that is just showing how sympathetic she fundamentally is, how hard done by, feel sad for her. like a victorian morality tale, rather than a 20s portrait of complex, flawed people, and it goes on and on and on with that same tangent

think it was a mistake to fire her at the beginning and thereby take her out of the kit kat club -- disconnects the club from the story, so we're just randomly going there sometimes for a song, and then back to the more grounded narrative, then back for another song that loosely comments on the scene we just watched. again, this goes back to the emcee being kind of nothing and sally being taken out of the club, so that there's barely any blend between the plot and the cabaret setting, either through interference of a godlike emcee, or by sally just going to work

this a bit vague, and not quite sure if i mind or not, but cliff was played by a black actor, and the thing is of course that in the story cliff is targeted by a nazi as a guy he can trick into smuggling illegal materials for the nazi party from paris into berlin (until cliff catches wise and tells him to go to hell). and i felt like there's an added ickiness to all of that if cliff is black, that is never really explored in this iteration (nor the fact that he's being hit on by a slew of white men and women). obviously this isn't the original text, so whether or not to bring that forward in this version, to comment (subtly or not) on racial attitudes of the 20s/30s as another form of mirror to today, is very much up to the show. then again, maybe this time isn't original to the text either and they included that as well, so could have been an opportunity if they really wanted to change something up for this specific iteration

In conclusion: really, very beautiful show, with great performers, that ultimately rang pretty hollow and didn't attempt to interact with the material from a modern lens beyond the trappings. save me from generic upscale "queer" imagery made palatable for non-queer audiences. clown emcee can't hurt me, he isn't real

okay - rammstein first

it’s hard for me to pick any one of them as my definite favorite BUT - first one that comes to my head is mein teil. I LOVE how eerie it all is. I think it’s one of the videos that convey the atmosphere of the song absolutely perfectly. each of the members did amazing in their scenes

mein teil was also the first of their videos that I consciously watched back in 2015. the last segment of them walking all on the leash literally burned into my memory

and most importantly - it gave us frau schneider

(I also have a special place in my heart for zeit and zick zack for different reasons)

god this one is harder for me to pick - maybe the entirety of nsl?? or ich hasse kinder cause I remember watching the premiere of it and I associate it with may positive emotions?? not sure!!!

but a honorable mention definitely goes to alle tage ist kein sonntag - its absolutely beautifully shot and it left me with more emotions than any piece of media I can recall

Day Ten - favorite role in MV

This is VERY hard one! All his characters are worthy of mention, he looks very different in almost every video, and it was super difficult to just choose a few but here we go.

I will probably say my favorite one of the ones i brought today is his character in Ich Will. Not by a very big advantage to the rest, but I love how he looks with a Mohawk and a damaged eye, AND how he brings to life that character. To me that man is a very unstable person, dangerous one moment, calm and calculated the next. We see him angrily hitting people as he walks into the bank, we see him laughing at the law as hes being arrested, and we see him satisfied and composed in front of the press even though Flake most likely blew to pieces at the end. This one takes number one because of how he portrayed it. Beautiful performance.

Immediately after, our smaller friend in Sonne. I am not sure if they were asigned a certain dwarf each, dont remember if I have seen it anywhere, but if I had to assign it, Schneider was Grumpy the dwarf until Schneewittchen arrived and beat the angry out of him. Hes was the one who came into the house first and noticed something was off right away when she arrived, and he immediately came forward to see her, looking heartbroken, when she overdosed. And he continues to look as such throughout the rest of the video. Grumpy takes 2nd place

Third and last I will go into detail about is werewolf Schneider. Best nose in the pack, can spot his prey from very far away. He is probably the tracker in their group and wont give up until he found what hes tracking. He also looks like a gentleman, but it might be what he wants you to think. I love this character.

Worth mentioning i think are also his roles in Ohne Dich, and Haifisch, but of course I love all others too, Schneider is a chameleon when it comes to MVs. Hes an amazing actor, which is why this one in particular was so hard. I once again didnt touch Deutschland because he portrays so many characters in it. All of them are worth mentioning here but I cant have more than 10 images.

Also,

I didnt have Frau Schneider in the top three because I wanted to rate them without her since we all know she is probably everyone's favorite. But she will be down here.

Important question, and forgive my ignorance, but is Schnill a thing? And why dost I crave it?

In my heart, definitely. In the community it's not very common but there is precedent there is reason to dream. Why do you crave it? They're very different people and it's funny to consider. They're both beautiful in very different ways and so look great together. They can connect through their drumming history. Schneider is a Dom and Till is a sub. Schneider openly admits he thinks Till is hot [source below]

I feel like a lot of it is just that he doesn't always understand Till? So there's a lot of O.o moments for them. Schneider gives him a lot of Looks in interviews and whatnot, including in the In Amerika group interview

Firstly, The Other Side of Midnight is my favorite Rammstein fic! “Till and Paul tell each tales to pass a sleepless night.” Paul and Till share stories about how they fucked Schneider, basically. I really like this one because one of Paul’s stories takes place in Feeling B era and I soak that shit up like a sponge. Plus it’s written beautifully. Like, this is one of those fics that makes me envious it’s so damn good. Read it or else!!!!

Fried Eggs and Honey - “Feeling B are just becoming established, but Paul wants more. He doesn’t know exactly what it is that he wants, though - not until he meets the shy, mysterious Till.” A super cute fic that I read all in one night. It’s written so realistically and casually that you can’t help but feel like you’ve lived the moment. I love fics that actually feel genuine. And Till is adorable. And Paul is so Paul. This fic literally had me punching the bed because they wrote Paul so spot-on. His faults and flaws, when he was young. Read this one. It’s so cute and perfect and the romance is written so realistically and ahhhh

Heroic & Durable by @zigratbites - “Paul has an accident on stage, but decides the show must go on anyway. This leads to some yelling, h/c and kissing.” Another great, wonderful, perfect fic where they capture Paul’s personality well. He’s a dedicated dumbass who will do whatever it takes to get something done well, and this shows in this fic. The side of Chrispaul does not hurt one bit, either. Love this one so much!!!

My Girl. by @till-hammer - “Frau Schneider comes out of her shell, but only for him.” this is Till/Schneider! this fic is SO GOOD I want more like this. exploration of character and gender is a favorite of mine. def recommend this one. love love love it

I love this dynamic between Till and Flake and the writing is BEAUTIFUL ackkk please read!!

So seid recht gut auf allen Wegen (So be good in all your journeys) by @prismabird​ -  “Far from home for the first time, Till finds solace from the unfamiliar in the arms of the familiar (based on Till, Richard, and Oli’s first trip to America in 1993).” So far, this fic is REALLY enjoyable to read. I love the element of friendship and reliance on each other. It’s a fun read, albeit sprinkled with some angst. I have laughed a couple times, and I related to Richard’s struggle with language.

Scar Tissue -  “While Till and Paul attempt to get on with their lives and repair an alreay damaged relationship, the band are also dealing with their bandmate who is suffering from a serious addiction.” This one is really, very good. I love the TillPaul aspect, but it’s very bittersweet. This fic is so sad, it nearly brought me to tears hhhh

Du riechst so gut - “Paul finds Schneider's scarf while he is cleaning up the hotel-room he's in for the moment. He really had just intended to use it to block out the light but- well, he's not going to complain about what happens instead.” this writing is excellent, and the smut is very enjoyable. I adore any author that includes realism: Schneider’s inexperience and sloppiness in attempting to blow Paul is really appreciated.

Heart of the Matter by @weitweg-vonmir​ - “Paul received a heart transplant from a stranger that saved his life. Now, a year later, that stranger's lover comes to meet the recipient of the transplant.” man this fic is like a punch to the gut. honestly, I’m seldom ever moved by angst fic, but this one legit made me cry, thinking about how fucked up and sad this whole situation is. you can only feel true sympathy for both sides of this. excellently written A+

Nähe des Geliebten by @naraism​ - “It's New Year's Day and the boys (Paul and Richard) finally have some free time just for themselves.” so soft and warm throughout it....such nice writing, too. and ugghh TOP PAUL IS MY WEAKNESS overall a really enjoyable fic!!

For the sake of full coverage, I wanted to include my personal favorites of my own works. This is more or less in order from #1 favorite.

Ich Will Eure Hände Sehen - “A six-man group of criminals, lead by Till, operate in early 2000's Berlin. A series of occurrences, both good and bad.” This is my baby lmao it’s been with me since I first joined the fandom, and I really need to finish it. I love the characters sm... prob the most effort I’ve put into any of my fanfics in a long time ♡

Mein Tier - “Frau Schneider keeps to herself, unusually so. Her weekly life consists only of work, and staying at home. Unbeknownst to the people around her, Schneider goes home every day to five loyal dogs. Dogs who are unaware of their state of captivity. Dogs who are not truly dogs, but men with their humanity deteriorated to that of beasts. But they are more than happy to be cared for by their neurotic, loving master.” I’m so fond of this fic; I love all of the characters, and the dynamics. it is so fun to write for!! ♡

Reconnecting - “Paul and Schneider used to have an on-and-off-again sexual relationship when they were younger. Now it's 2017, and something has reignited.” I LOVE this one. Schneider/Paul is my OTP, and this was the one time I shoved all my Feelings for them into a fic. it’s so soft and intimate

Stripping Away the Layers - “It's been a while since their last "session". It seems Schneider has to reteach Paul how to obey. Unlike Till, who has always striven to please him, Paul clings to his pride. Schneider manages to rip it from him. He always does.” THIS ONE IS SO HOT THAT’S ALL HDSFFGL I’m really pleased with how it came out. The spanking part is my FAVORITE love this one...

This Is How This Night Is Going to Go - “Following the hectic evening of being followed around by documenting cameras, Paul and Schneider find some privacy away from the others. Paul doesn't really appreciate what he pulled earlier at the party.” the first smut fic I wrote for Schneider/Paul! I adore how I managed to write Paul in this one. he’s so bold and it’s hot lmao ♡

Red Ribbon - “Taking place in the 19th century, Schneider visits a whorehouse with intention of hiring the services of a male prostitute. It seems there are a few new additions. One in red catches his eye.” I’m mostly really proud of the second chapter... I love the pace of it, and the developing relationship. writing in different time periods is also sooo fun (plus ngl I really love prostitute AUs)

Worth the Risk - “Ollie visits Schneider in the secrecy of the night at a secluded villa where they're currently producing their newest album. He and Schneider make use of their bandmates' absence.” a super indulgent, super kinky Schneider/Ollie fic that I’ve reread multiple times just because I feel like I got it just right; it’s pretty damn hot lol

A Rocky Start - “Paul gets up earlier than Flake, and decides to make them breakfast. Soon enough, Flake joins him with a lovely surprise. Paul was never the best at resisting temptation.” I couldn’t get this idea out of my head while at work, and I’m really pleased that I managed to get it into words just how I envisioned it... so soft and warm and sexy ♡ I love this ship so much and I hope you give it a chance!!

And that’s about it! My greatest recommendation is exploring Rammstein fanfic as a whole, it’s another world of fandom that I feel deserves more recognition. Don’t be shy to test the waters!

Favorite things about each Rammstein member

Thank you so much @ah-its-too-much for tagging me to this Rammstein challenge! :3 As I suck badly at following rules strictly, instead of listing 5 things I like, I just ramble about each of them so might be less or more than 5 things.

Till

The mixture of him being a “super masculine testosterone package” versus the sensitive and shy poet – what a lovely contrast indeed. Even though my German is far from fluent, I enjoy his lyrics so much – they can be at the same time inspirational, bold, scary as shit but still, sensitive. There’s no topic he couldn’t write a text about. Outside performing, he seems like a modest man who doesn’t desire the fame itself – he is in Rammstein because he wants to express his art and loves what he is doing, not just because he wants to be rich and famous. And his voice is heavenly when he speaks, I could listen to his storytelling for the rest of my life on loop.

Oliver

No band would be anything without a solid bass player – and he is a talented player indeed when you listen to for example Seemann, Hallomann or Diamant. I’d like to hear his bass solos definitely more! He seems to have a bizarre sense of humor even though being a reserved introvert – for example, his costumes leave me with question marks: Sehnsucht tour’s tapes on eyes? The red tablecloth in Stadium Tour? The “Darth Vader” costume? And one thing I have to mention from Sonne making of when Paul tells that Oliver just randomly listened to Sonne while there was footage from Snow White playing on his computer – it was so out of place, so logically he thought that it would be a perfect theme for the music video. That’s a sense of humor I like, lol. But yeah, in general, he seems like a sweet person and he treats fans with respect.

Schneider

I love his drumming style – simple rhythms, played with so much energy and aggression which goes perfectly along with their music. Very, very talented musician once again. As every Ramm member, he seems really sweet and funny and his love for his family…oh my god. And he is a good actor indeed and makes a perfect woman in Mein Teil! I’m not sure was the Frau&her dogs thing his idea, but if it was, he must have a insane creativity. :D

Paul

The cute little Mr. Sunshine we need in our everyday lives! His enthusiasm towards fans is so heartbreaking. When I saw him really close in Ratina, shaking hands with screaming fans while he was boating, he genuinely seemed to enjoy himself – my heart might have melted just a tiny bit on that evening. And also, those stories him hugging panicking fans in M&G…oh my god, we don’t deserve him. T_T In general, he seems like a funny and adorable guy in videos and interviews. Plus, he is gorgeous as hell, look at him with all his tattoos and weird costumes…omg.

Flake

If the five other of them are the basic ingredients of the soup, Flake is the umami seasoning. Seriously, I think without him Rammstein wouldn’t so unique. He is a talented musician – he just keeps underestimating himself, which doesn’t make any sense while he is a magician on keyboards. He is a funny and unique character indeed – silly glitter outfits, mixed with his weird dancing and movements, brilliant, just brilliant. I could go to see a show just with him playing psychedelic keyboard solos and dancing on his treadmill. When Links started in Ratina and I saw him walking on the famous treadmill, I thought: this is it, I’m back home with my old buddies. He seems like he has thousands of funny and adorable stories to tell about the band and he is superb at storytelling – Tastenficken is hands down one of my favorite books. He is truly an artist.

Richard

Last, but not least… I could write a 150-page novel about how much I love him, but I try to keep it reasonable now – I admit, he’s been my crush since from my teenage years. I have always adored his style (Silver-era never forget! We loved the burning microphones on Asche zu Asche with my best friend back in the days :’D), his talent (his playing pierces my soul every single time), his effort and passion for everything he does, his love for family, how he treats fans with respect…this man deserves only good things. And what I respect the most is how he talks about his insecurities, his difficulties, and his mental health struggles openly. You sweet, sweet man, I just want to squeeze you and tell you that you are awesome, and you are just enough as you are – as your unique self. You truly are my inspiration. Plus, how somebody just keeps getting hotter and hotter by the years? I don’t get it.

Damn, I love them all so much...

Thoughts on Rammstein's best music videos that aren't Deutschland

My favorite music video has to be Mein Teil. It really has everything I’ve ever needed from them and it gave us one of rammstein’s greatest treasures- Frau Schneider (*cough* and Till sucking on a strap in some other version of the mv *cough*). My second favorite has to be Haifisch. Mostly because of how each member was portrayed and I just think the plot is top notch. Amerika, Ausländer,  Rosenrot and Ich Will are definitely up there for me too. (Honorable mention for Mein Land and Pussy sjdhbsjhs)
