"So when I first read the script, I was kind of taken aback by the way that Rin got dragged down whenever Haruka did, getting in a total funk. But Haruka and Rin share a common destiny, right? So when one stumbles, the other does too. I was both moved and excited by their exchange in the night pool."

Happy Halloween in advance, Saro! Trick or treat? 👻
send me a trick or treat and I'll write you a mini fic!
---
(alternate outcome of the hospital scene in Final Stroke)
---
Rin can't help but feel like it's his fault, so he keeps making excuses to stay in the little hotel room even as he feels his eyelids drooping. He didn't sleep well last night; too worried about the man sleeping in the hotel bed and the way he can't easily define their relationship.
He only knows the things that he isn't. The fastest at freestyle, an even tempered anchor, a steady and devoted older brother, a child unaffected by the shadow of his fathers passing. Haru's boyfriend, Haru's best friend, who Haru needs in his life. Didn't his own ambition drag Haru into this mess?
"Come here."
"Hmm?" Rin shakes himself awake, lifting his chin from where it had rested in his palm. Damn it, he's falling asleep and it's not even 10am.
Haru grips the handles on either side of the bed and start to lift himself up. That gets Rin moving.
"Hey, hey, cut it out," and he almost trips in his haste to get out of the chair. "What do you need?"
"You're falling asleep. Here. The bed's big enough." Haru has finished scooting to one side and promptly rolls over, one arm sticking out to avoid crushing his IV.
"Wh-- what are you-- I'm fine, Haru, I promise."
The look Haru throws over his shoulder is an entire novel's worth of judgement. But the bones in that shoulder seem more prominent then they should be, and something tender climbs up the back of Rin's throat and starts to throttle him with affection.
"Fine," he mutters, "did this once anyway. Your fault when the nurses ban us from the hospital."
"Hmm."
Shedding his jacket to drape over them both, Rin gets himself situated on his side facing Haru. "This is your plan, right? If you can't get them to release you, you'll get us kicked out?"
He means to roll over, line up his spine with Haru's, but he gets distracted measuring the dip of that waist with his eyes. Fuck. Did he almost kill Haru, trying to force them both to the top?
"Stop thinking so loudly." Haru reaches behind himself and drags Rin closer, pressing Rin's chest against his back. "It's not your fault. I chose to do this."
Like vines, Rin's arms wind around Haru's torso. Funny how often he finds himself like this; hanging off Haru, soaking in the heat of his skin and the silent acceptance of his touch.
"Let's both be more careful then, yeah?" he whispers into Haru's ear, letting his eyes close.
The last thing Rin remembers is hearing the heart monitor skip a beat. Then he is gone.
