however i will say there's another thing i really like abt him:

his Range!

he has a v flexible face.. even with his neutral expression, you cant help but read a tinge of melancholy/pensiveness to it.

he deters people from getting too comfortable with him by acting crude, but no matter how unapproachable he looks you can't help but wonder if he's ok. seems like he's never content with himself.

just like karkat, anger gives him purpose = something to care about & react to. without it he can appear aimless/uncertain.

it's especially interesting when you compare him to aradia, who despite having endured a lot of shit, ends up enjoying the freedom of expanding her worldview, riding the unpredictable tide of the narrative and observing the changes. sollux... doesn't.

he doesn't like watching major things progress in a way he can't predict. the lack of certainty actually overwhelms him.

and it's pretty clear why; imagine the only reassurance you get after unknowingly killing ur gf is that "it needed to happen". the only way to appease that sort of emotional turmoil is by intellectualizing those events as inevitable and out of your control.

when you’re just a tool for the author, trying to sit out is just feeble self-preservation until you’re needed again. if you’re not called on stage to help/assist in some way, it feels like your presence spells doom (either you or someone else will get hurt). so you avoid Events as best you can.

Woow, okay, so consider my request where I said that Vriska killed Gamzee "for nothing" as just my ignorance.

It’s pretty horrible that they made Gamzee like that. He did enough shit during HS. Even he’s not allowed a real redemption.

Out of all the characters to truly be bastardize to the point it's outright massacre of his original self from the webcomic, Gamzee definitely suffered the most and I feel bad for fans of him that liked him prior to being a villain. They briefly mentioned about how his life on Alternia was hell, his status as a highblood to follow a sketchy religion, and how neglectful his lusus was that made him what he is...but that barely scratches the surface level if you pile up on him learning the truth about the religion and how he is part of Lord English with him actually raising Caliborn, the man who would be a big bad. It must hurt seeing your favorite character turned to a plot device for the bigger bad, destined to always be put under mind control to calm him down by Post Retcon, and him having been literally Fridgestuck for years without anyone to talk to. He could have stayed there forever and died of old age. But upon Candy choice, he becomes worse, barely acting like he was remorseful of his actions, goes to fuck with Jane, act creepy towards Tavros Crocker (and that's not implying the implications if Gamzee still has feelings for the bronze after all has happened), and is never really a close friend with Karkat even after his supposed "redemption arc". Not even Karkat was willing to hang with him again or Gamzee making effort to see his one living old friend. I feel bad for Gamzee fans the most. He may have died at last by Homestuck^2, but his corpse and name is still used to spit on him of what he was before being an antagonist and how he could have gotten better redemption arc than what Epilogues did.

You managed to ignore the swirl of emotions and revelations it caused you and focus on helping out instead, but it hadn’t taken you too long to determine what you’d have to do next. Still, you’d be lying if you said you weren’t putting it off.]

[You were happy here. You were comfortable. The company was nice, hanging out was a lot of fun, and others that you cared about even got to spend time here with you.

You knew it was temporary from the beginning. Waver invited you to stay so that you could safely heal up. You were a guest and you knew it would be over when you were back to full strength. You planned to just enjoy it while it lasted, but now you fear that the longer you stay, the more everyone involved will be hurt when things inevitably come to a head.]

[Trolls aren’t like humans. You’ve killed countless people, Eridan’s record isn’t exactly clean, and Gamzee still sometimes bashes peoples heads in for fun. Anda’s secret about Lars wasn’t received well--and Lars was a vigilante at worst--you can’t imagine how it would go with you.]

If he’s tired, the last thing he wants to be doing is showing it. And if he’s tired without a semblance of a safe place to crash in and reinvigorate, he’s definitely not stepping foot outside where someone could see him like that. So if any citizens see a random figure flying lazily through the sky, it could be another super powered individual. Or it could just be a super-tired angel who can’t be bothered with the mechanics of walking.

The last face he expects to see when he sneaks his way back into Terezi’s apartment is Gamzee, for sure. The shock on his face hopefully isn’t obvious, though a moment later does Joshua realize that’s only because of the exhaustion painting his features. So he blinks.

“Hiya there.”

That... should work, right? Gamzee hadn’t even spoken to him the last time they’d encountered each other, so it’s not like there’s even a reputation to break already. His voice feels hoarse, but not unusual otherwise-- a welcome discovery. He blinks again.

“You’re…” Careful, Joshua, you don’t want to make it obvious that you’re straining to think over your next words. “... not who I expected.”

Then he closes the window behind him, lands back on his feet, and settles into the apartment as if it were still his own, sly smile returning to his face for the first time this encounter.
