alright real talk-

(side note Adam is Goldy Pond and Norman wouldn't get the rest of his superhuman army in this hypothetical scenario)

NOW I KNOW I KNOW EVERYONE SEES NORMAN AND THEIR THUMBS ARE GOING TO DO THE THINKING FOR THEM

BUT CONSIDER

according to the wiki grand valley and glory bell are allowed longer survival rates since they also let the children develop PHYSICALLY so don't immediately discount goldy pond since we know lamba has some troubles physically *cough* mostly norman *cough* (headaches/seizures should be taken into account to give goldy pond the advantage)

(the light novels also confirm that yuugo got a perfect score for THREE MONTHS IN A ROW!!! yes that's as not impressive compared to norman never getting anything wrong BUT STILL! PUT SOME RESPECT ON YUUGOS NAME PLZ!!!)

i'm personally biased to goldy pond because they are basically the equivalent of Kevin McAlister from Home Alone but there are TEN OF THEM (i don't think yuugo is feral enough to qualify sorry)

but then again ZAZIE EXISTS

yes lamba is superhuman but Goldy Pond has way more experience dealing with demons who are way better physically (and sometimes mentally)

you could argue thats only due to lucas's 13 years of experience in a very specifc environment and situation that they won

and their plan would have failed without yuugo, ray and emma showing up

HOWEVER goldy pond has been avoiding death on a constant basis FOR YEARS IN SOME CASES while the lamba crew is only really deployed against lower level guard demons

At least cislo, barbra, hayato, gin and zazie can definitely be outsmarted

while the brainiacs on both sides can be overpowered physically (lucas and norman)

BUT GIVE THEM SOME CREDIT PLZ!!! EVEN VINCENT ACKNOWLEDGES THEY ARE EXTREMELY USEFUL!

side note: some of the older goldy ponders are 17 when they escape +2 the two year time skip so they are almost in their 20s while the rest of lamba is mentally 5 year olds due to genetic aging

Yuugo is peak physical condition

Both him and Lucas (TOOK A GUY WITH ONE ARM IN A CHOKE HOLD) took out a highly trained assassin squad

ray tpn is autistic and i'm gonna tell you why now

ray is one of the most heavily autistic-coded characters i can think of, and i've been wanting to write up a post going over as many of his autistic mannerisms as i can because there is a lot. this will probably be long because i am also autistic and i am especially autistic about ray, so please enjoy while i psychoanalyze this anime boy with way more scrutiny than anyone would consider healthy <3

body language

perhaps one of the strongest arguments for ray's autism can be made by looking at his body language. ray tries to keep a stoic, neutral expression and voice the majority of the time (though he's often quite. bad at that too) but he is always extremely expressive through his movements and gestures, the most noticeable of which being the use of his hands. pretty much every character uses hand gestures, but ray is ridiculously excessive. it'd take frankly way too long to compile every instance of this (or even half) throughout the manga, so here's a small collection of gestures from s1 of the anime to give an idea:

note that this is not even close to all of them and that he's exactly like this in the manga as well, though the animation and its use of snappy, exaggerated movements does help to make these much more noticeable.

moving away from his hands there's also just a lot of really expressive full-body language as well, such as this friendly chokehold:

just to name a few. basically, ray has a thing for grand unnecessary movements and no one is surprised.

poor emotional regulation and masking

as i mentioned before, ray tries really really hard to bottle up his emotions and keep a sort of stoic persona during his time at gracefield. he's also really really bad at doing this. not terrible, as he was able to keep up a believable enough front that none of the other kids saw anything odd about his behavior for 6 years, but that's also because he deals with so much more stress once the events of the escape arc actually get going. there is a stark difference between his quiet and detached demeanor while emma and norman are still in the dark about the house, and him nearly having a meltdown every time something strays from his meticulously crafted plans while they actually begin making their preparations to escape over the course of the arc.

just a few examples of this include him nearly having a breakdown when emma insists on taking everyone:

or one of my favorite anime exclusive moments where he strains his voice while yelling at isabella to the point he breaks into a coughing fit:

and it's not just big flashy meltdowns, but little bursts of anger as well. shoutout to this moment in particular where he launches this bucket with enough force to tear up a bit of the damn ground:

this emotional instability can be seen after the escape as well, the most glaring example being how he interacts with yuugo:

their dynamic in general really does a good job of showing ray’s mental state after the escape, because pre-goldy pond yuugo is An Asshole. and ray is so, so easy to piss off and quite frankly tired from bottling up his emotions for so long that every interaction with said asshole is a massive struggle to keep himself from physically attacking him.

as for the topic of masking, that’s what ray’s attempts to hide his emotions feel like to me. ray is constantly in danger of losing isabella’s trust, whether that be by revealing he may be a little more attached to the other kids than he lets on or by showing too much emotion that the other kids start to wonder what the hell’s going on. ray has to constantly hide and cover up his emotions with more palatable ones for others out of fear of looking out of place or being seriously hurt, and well if that doesn’t just describe autistic masking to a tee i don’t know what does.

maybe one of the things that gets me the most about that is that he's essentially been masking for about half of his life, and doing that for any extended period of time is extremely draining. ray has been drained to the point that he will have full meltdowns when put under any sort of stress and when you take into account the fact that he already has pretty severe anger issues as a result of his trauma, it's really no wonder he has such a short fuse.

lack of a filter when speaking

ray is a very blunt person. he speaks matter-of-factly and he wastes no time in getting straight to his point, sometimes with only a single sentence:

the way he talks is also pretty significant, as he generally has a more monotone way of speaking. he really only yells when he gets really worked up which like i said, happens a lot, but there’s almost no inbetween for him. pre-escape, he tries to show as little emotion in his voice as possible outside of his outbursts.

as for post-escape ray, he does seem to show much more emotion in the way he speaks. its a bit harder to judge, as nothing past the escape arc was ever adapted into the anime (s2 isnt real it cant hurt you) but his facial expressions become much more varied and it’s easy to say his vocal inflections likely do as well. however, what we can say for sure is that he remains just as blunt as ever:

no matter how comfortable he becomes with expressing himself, this aspect of his speech never seems to change.

while we’re on the topic of his speaking mannerisms please also direct your attention to these panels:

sensory issues. so many sensory issues

briefly moving back to the subject of ray’s hands, i couldn’t help but notice during my countless s1 rewatches that they are almost never just resting at his sides. if he's not using his hands for unnecessary gestures they are either shoved into his pockets, or he's crossing his arms. it's very likely his arms default to these positions because they offer a sort of sense of security, the former keeping his hands covered and the latter keeping him more closed off, almost like he's constantly hugging himself. basically, ray is a 'likes to feel covered and secure' autistic and if he was buried in weighted blankets he'd probably love it.

also tying into the ‘likes to feel covered’ aspect of ray’s autism is this scarf he acquires sometime during the volume 12 timeskip:

it’s a well known autistic thing to get attached to articles of clothing and wear them as much as possible, and boy does ray get attached to this scarf. i can count 2 post-timeskip scenes off the top of my head that have him not wearing this scarf, and the image on the right takes place a full 2 years after the left one in canon. he has no explicitly stated emotional attachment to this scarf and we don’t even know how he got it, just that he almost never takes it off. it could easily be seen as a comfort item, maybe he just likes the way the fabric feels or the extra coverage it offers him. there is post-canon content that depicts him without it, but the fact that he wore it almost nonstop for at least 2 years straight is still pretty significant.

another sensory thing i feel is worth mentioning is that ray seems to have a very specific tolerance threshold for physical contact. he seems fine initiating touch himself, and touches from emma and norman are generally alright, likely because they are the only people he has openly allowed himself to be close with his entire life. sudden touches from others however, are a different story. the one that immediately comes to mind is this interaction with don:

don in particular is someone ray becomes pretty close to, and i would say that besides the obvious growth with emma and norman, don is likely the person we see the most development with with in terms of their relationship. him having this reaction to a hug from someone he’s so close to seems indicative of some issues with unexpected contact.

and finally one of my absolute favorite things the anime added, which is ray experiencing what looks a lot like sensory overload:

this takes place right after the argument with isabella, which ended with him being knocked to the floor and locked up in a room by himself, so its needless to say that he’s pretty shaken up. he gets so overwhelmed that all he can do is yell and desperately reach for any sort of stimulation to keep him grounded, curling in on himself and aggressively ruffling up his hair. i genuinely cannot think of an allistic explanation for this scene.

and basically, he is just so autistic

all in all, theres some pretty damn solid evidence for ray being autistic and whether it was intentional or not, the sheer amount of autism-coding present in ray’s writing is almost impossible to ignore. i love some good projection but i don’t even need to do that much, hes just doing this all on his own. in conclusion:

Who has the funniest reaction to REN officially announcing they're together?

ohhh man some of the younger kids for sure. my first reaction is definitely to say thoma and lani, i always see them becoming fucking hilarious as they get older. they would tease ray sooo hard i bet. like oh man you got it bad dont you? living your life for them. growing as a person for them. CRINGE. all with love of course but yk how brothers be<3

honestly i dont ever really imagine any of them being overly shocked because like- with the exception of the Youngest ones all of these kids watched the three of them grow up together for at Least a few years, and they all saw how close they were. so it just kinda makes sense that yk. theyd be together in this as well. i think there could be funny potential in gilda and anna or whoever else arguing about if emma is in love with norman or ray and emmas just like. surprise :D frankly i think most of the humor is gonna come fromt teasing ray. that boy is so teasable. loser boy in love<3

theres also potential with normans gang but i think that would be less funny and more they would be losing their minds like. saying they treat it like a drama seems mean but JSBDKEBB. theyd just be like hoooolyyyy fuck oh my god. what the hell. i am going to explode

Some times ago i spoke with @fullscoreshenanigans about the idea of Norman being so sick that he would be send to the Headquarter.

I wanted to re-work it.

So the idea "Norman was so sick this day that Isabella had to send him to the headquarter" it's a divergeance of what happen in the novel, where Norman is VERY sick and that Emma wants to find a flower to help him. Except the kids are 7 or 8. I don't know how old they are in the novel but i think they're still young.

Let's say they're seven.

Imagine if his serious flu turned into a pneumonia, he is having trouble breathing, he is coughing, he has a high fever and is barely conscious. He suffers and when he's barely awake, he says "mum it hurts!"

Isabella has not the sutff to help him and wouldn't have other choice that calling the headquarters because of of the best kid, the one with the most hopes, was seriously ill. Nobody want to lose Norman before he's 12. He's too smart and so too precious. He's destined to their god. He's the finest of the finests.

Even the Queen orders that he have the best care: he MUST survive until to have 12 years old.

Isabella receives the orders andgive sedative to Norman, so he'll sleep until to be at the headquarter and will not awake before being in his room there. She wraps him in the blanket, and takes him in her arms.

Isabella, with a sleeping boy in her arms, tells the other kids that Norman has been sent to the hospital because his flu was too serious. And probably very contagious. "his flu turned into a pneumonia, it's too serious to stay here!"

She promise that he'll get better and will not die if he goes to the hospital. Because Emma is in tear, panicked and she is sobbing and Isabella wants to reassure her.

Ray does not believe it, he's sure that Norman will not return, will be eaten as soon he'll be healed. He follows here until the door, with a begging look. "please don't! not him!" he begs for Norman's life after have following her outside, when nobody else can hear him.

Isabella tells him, "Listen Ray, i can't heal him by myself, it's too serious. I sent him to doctors

'but he'll not come back right? He's going to..."

"He'll come back"

But he doesnt' believe her.

He returns in his room and starts to cry. He couldn't help Norman, and now Norman has been shipped. He can't even blame Isabella since it's even not her fault if Norman was sick!! So sick that she couldn't help him.

Ray's scores fall up. Emma is less good than usual too.

Isabella is worried that the two could be shipped (who know with the demons?), so she tells the headquarters that the kids are just upset and very worried because of Norman's absence, because they are very close. And that they'll got better soon. So the two kids have a free pass because "they" have a lot oh hopes for them so they'll not ask them to be shipped sooner than planned because they are just upset but they better to have good results when Norman will come back or else...

Sarah trusts Isabella's judgement about it. She has raised kids too, she know how a kid can turn if they're trully upset. She speaks with demons and tell them that the kids will have better scores as soon the sick one will be back "they're just worried, don't worry, their scores will be good again very soon!"

Ray is into a depression state, he doesn't care about anything anymore. A part of him even wonder why his mother doesn't ship him since he doesn't even try to have good results anymore. She could get rid of him and of what he represents so why? And she tells him that she'll not ship him sooner just because he fall the tests because of his worries for Norman while also tell him "and what about Emma? Didn't you want to make sure she lives until 12?". And after that Ray's scores aren't bad anymore but he's away of his usual good results. "Norman will come back Ray, trust me. We can heal from a pneumonia, don't worry! He just need of more care than he would have here!"

Meanwhile Emma is almost like she always is but she is still worried, and asks about Norman everyday to Isabella. Her results are so a little less good than usual but unlike Ray, she thinks that Norman will return as soon he'll get better so she is not into a kind of depression.

Meanwhile Norman is keep into a comfy room in the headquarter, no demon come close of him (of course), only humans. He's the most often sedated, but there are moments where he has to not be under it (also because they don't want him to become dependant of it?) and must do some exercices, so only Sisters and Doctors come close of him.

They give him treats, books and are so nice with him. He receives even a book and a toy. He doesn't see anything weird. He asks about his friends and they told him "don't worry you'll see them again soon!'". Healing from pneumonia take time so they even make him do more some physical exercices in his room. The door is always closed, they told him that it's because he's contagious. He has a fever for the most of his time there, so he believe it. His room is even soundproof, like all the rooms that they use to the kids who come to the headquarters to be healed. (they don't want kids to hear something they shouldn't).

Norman may have some suspicions at a point, like he thinks that something may be weird but with his fever, it's hard to stay concentrated. So he stops wondering things. He's just a seven years old sick kid after all.

So at a point, Norman is healed. He lost some weight, and his body is very weak, but he's almost totally healed. So they give him a warm milk at a point, one day at the beginning of the night, and there are sedatives into it. He fall asleep, without any suspicions that something is in his milk, and they took him back to Grace Field house three.

Isabella is called at the door, so she ask the oldest kids to watch everyone for few minutes. Ray is still depressed, he lost weight, not eat a lot, and barely speaks since Norman's departure. He's lucky that Isabella has make compromise to not shipp him with the headquaters because of that and his bad results during this period. A part of him has give up but another part doesn't want to give up because of Emma. But at this point, he's in grief because he thinks Norman is dead.

He still wonder why Isabella doesn't ship him. Does she care? Does she refuses to ship him sooner then planned by pure pride? He HATES that he part of him hopes she CARES and wants him to live as long that possible. It would mean she kinda loves him. Then WHY?

He barely notices that she go to the door.

And of course, every kid wonder what Isabella is doing to do at the "door" and some make theories about "a new kid come" and stuff like that. And Isabella returns with a sleepy Norman in her arms and everyone is overjoyed. She gently asks them to not wake him and says that they will be able to visit him the next day, if they promise to be gentle and not too loud. "It was a serious sickness, he's still very weak. He needs to rest. But you can see him, not all in the the same time, and not for too long, but you'll be able to speak with him"

And then, she looks at her son, who is almost in tears and gently says "finish your plate Ray" before going to the infirmary, leaving the kids overjoyed.

At night, Ray going to see her and she told him "i sent him to the headquarters to be healed, not shipped. It's your problem if you didn't believe me when i said you that he would come back" before patting his head and said "I hope you'll stop moping now Ray. And that you'll remember our deal!" because she knows that the Headquarters will not take any excuses anymore if his scores continue to be bad.

Hey @officersnickers i don' know why but i love creating drama for the full scores trio, and give anxiety to baby Ray. XD
