I've been thinking about Tong Ru and Han Muchun's connection ever since it was hinted that there's something between them. It felt really really melancholic thinking about their relationship based on the lines given to them expressing their world views, and how much they treasure having familial connections. And the last chapter dedicated to them really ruined me, LOL, I didn't see it coming. There's so much yearning between them which can't be expressed by mere words alone. Man, I love their dynamic.

直道相思了無益,
未妨惆悵是清狂。
Since no satisfaction could possibly arise from my expressing unrequited love,
I might as well brood in melancholy to idly lose my mind.
Even if pining never bore any fruit, there was no harm in melancholy turning to a pure craze.

Divine Warriors
Here is some info dump about MCD's Divine Warriors in my rewrite, not all of this is known to the public of the mortal realm (especially the stuff about Shad.)
Irene the Matron: There isn't much known about Lady Irene's past, the only evidence they have are the scriptures Enki had written. Though most were burned. It is a common concept that she grew up in a small village (later Scaleswind) in Ru'aun. born from the ash of a god they say. She is incredibly strong, having healing magicks and the ability to bring those back from the dead as well as other abilities (mainly dimensional), Irene did not have a weapon. She can also change her form into a man but she rarely ever did this and it's said that she hated the form. After her disappearance (presumed death) which was 40 or so years after the fight with Shad. She was worshipped more commonly, which her worship later became widespread. Irene is worshipped as the god of medicine/health, the afterlife, agriculture and hope. She is associated with doves (because of her wings) and lavender, around churches and royalty/nobles homes, you will see statues of doves and fields of lavender. It's said that natural forming fields of lavender are places blessed by Irene. Although mainly worshipped in Ru'aun she is seen and heard all over the world.
Menphia the Fury: She grew up in Tu'la near the capital, one of the very few in Tu'la who was human. Menphia came from a well off noble family, she was a strong girl who could wield almost any close combat weapon. She became one of the princesses' guards at the age of 19. There was a rumor that Menphia and the princess were having an affair but it was never denied nor confirmed. She became a protector of Irene and later one of the Divine Warriors, she also had a pet tiger. Her magicks are very limited but they consist of strength and speed. Menphia used multiple different close combat weapons (swords, maces, battle axes, etc). She died during the fight with Shad to save Enki. She is worshipped mainly in Gal'ruk and Tu'la and usually by guards or soldiers. She is worshipped as the god of rage, strength, war, and courage. She is associated with tigers and fire. Her statues always have a tiger at her legs.
Shad the Destroyer: Not much is known about Shad at all, Enki himself destroyed practically everything that he had written about Shad. Them and Irene were close, the common conception was that they were lovers. Irene and Shad had a fight because he was a danger to mortals. Irene sealed Shad deep inside a mountain for 10 years, he later escaped and caused havoc. Although Irene and many of the other warriors had pushed her to their breaking point it was Shad himself who decided to be spiteful and become the Shadow Lord. Xavier was the first ever shadow knight. Their magicks consist of strength, telekinesis, and break dimension barriers. She can change their form much like Irene, to a woman, man, or a form of neither. He seems to enjoy this unlike Irene. Many depictions of Shad are different in gender because of this. Very few mortals worship him but she is seen as the god of deception, chaos, death, and tragedy. He is commonly associated with crows and lily of the valleys.
Enki the Keeper: Enki had many journals detailing both his and the other warriors lives yet he either burned most or hid them away, very few were actually found. He grew up in a home of warriors in Gal'ruk but despite this he became a scholar. He is known to have been in love with many, Menphia, Irene, Esmund's brother. Likely Xavier too. He was born without any magicks but he did know a bit of witchcraft. His abilities after getting a relic were; un-human observation, speed, and levitation. Enki barely fought but when he did he used an ink brush (much like Qiu Yongsi from Tianbao Fuyao lu). Enki died 5 or so years after the battle with Shad. He is worshipped in Gal'ruk and is a common figure head for literature. He is the god of; ink and paper, literature, language, and love. Enki is commonly associated with owls and snow.
Esmund the Protector: Much is known about him as he was the eldest son of one of the most well known historians, Ruthin Ro'meave. He grew up in Ru'aun, he became a guard and later became a Divine Warrior. Esmund was commonly known for his beauty that rivaled Irene's. He was deeply in love with Irene which caused a strain between Irene, Shad and Esmund. His younger brother was horrifically injured during a battle while under Shad's watch which caused Esmund to become even more resentful of Shad. Despite wanting to help defeat Shad he decided to stay behind and protect. He died 30 years before Irene's disappearance. He is worshipped in Ru'aun usually by Lords of villages seeking protection. He is the god of; protection, safety, loyalty, victory, and family. Esmund is associated with swords and diamonds.
Kul'zak the Wanderer: They grew up near the docks of Tu'la, they were a meif'wa. They helped with travel when ships docked on Tu'la. Kul'zak was the first Divine Warrior after Irene, and a nomad. They were a very good bard and a little mischievous. They were the oldest of the Divine Warriors and the one to have kept them all together. After the Divine Warriors split they traveled and spoke of legends for 10 years before dying. Unlike the other Divine Warriors they aren't worshipped in one place, they are worshipped as the god of; travel. merchants, alcohol and music. Kul'zak is associated with intoxication and the flute.

His vibes are insane. A character pipi made by putting Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu in a jar and shaking, and then wrapping the result in the most unassuming shell possible. That one post that went like "perfectly normal man that has something seriously wrong with him" might as well have been made about him. Kills like 20 ppl in his introduction scene, falls off a cliff, gets on a bus, and agrees to become a teacher for those random guys he met because one of them is hot. Speaking of, his bi awakening and accepting it happens in a span of like, one second. *Sees a hot guy* welp, homosexual attraction is not a sin! Also, somehow has perfect tumblr shitposter vibes. Was asked what's a word for "good brother" in his language and after careful consideration said "bitch". Did I mention he's insane? "Play me a tune, and I'll go along with your BDSM play." Or that time he woke up after being clinically dead for a bit (saw his deceased loved ones asking him to go into the light and all) and to his bf's frantic questioning of "Does it hurt?" immediately went "Yes. It hurts a lot. You have to kiss it better." like bestie your priorities.... Anyway yeah what a guy.
Tong Ru / Lord Beiming from Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect
“Beiming? Who deserves the title of Beiming? That’s merely an arrogant title given by some short-sighted people.” - Lord Beiming, Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, Chapter 16

Translated a passage I like from Liu Yao chapter 21. Priest is very thorough and insightful when writing about how being abandoned by his family and sent away at a young age shaped Cheng Qian’s personality:
Once again, the invincible and unassailable Lord Beiming on the tall tower of Lingxian came to his mind; what also came to his mind are his parents, counting fragmented pieces of silver in the poor remote countryside. This difference between the powerful and the penniless, as immense as the distance between clouds in heaven and mud on the ground, made him clearly see the hidden wishes in his heart.
Why does he desire to be someone like Lord Beiming?
If one day he could become an accomplished master and set foot in whatever corner of the world he chooses, while animals tremble at his sight and mortals bow before his presence...Would this mean that he could finally return to his family and watch them suffer with remorse and wallow in regret?
But in this moment, as Cheng Qian hung in mid-air, as the residences and courtyards of cultivators on Fuyao Mountain receded from him, his heart, always filled with deliberations and cares, was suddenly emptied.
The life of a mortal only has thirty to fifty years left to it; he plotted and planned day and night to go back and humilate his family, but what then?
Maybe they’d have left this world a long time ago when he finally completes his cultivation training.
Maybe they’d still be alive, but half a lifetime would’ve passed, his parents might feel somewhat regretful in their twilight years about sending a child away so early on, but after the feeling of regret passes, how deep could the bond between them still be?
If he had really been the apple of their eyes, why would he be sent away so lightly?
And if the emotional bond between him and his family had already been severed, why would they feel any visceral guilt and regret?
All of a sudden, Cheng Qian relaxed his tense shoulders, and left it to his half-demon shimei (1) who always understood his words by their opposite meaning to take him higher and higher.
He found that the profound hatred he believed himself to have harboured all this time was only an overblown product of his mind.
(1) shimei: a younger female disciple from the same cultivation sect

Tianbao Fuyao Lu by Feitian Yexiang
Translator: moon Editors: juurensha, namio Original: 天宝伏妖录 by 非天夜翔 (221 chs + various extras) Posted at Chicken Gege, updates Sundays at 9 AM GMT+7
Synopsis: From the end of the horizon, a phoenix led millions of birds in flight. Behind it, a sky filled with billowing clouds that looked like a sea of flames skimmed over Chang’an. A golden-winged peng perched loftily atop the roof of the Xingqing Palace. In its eyes was reflected the splendor of the common people who lived in this Divine Land. In silence, dynasties rose and fell, and the tides ebbed and flowed.
Li Jinglong dragged along his wound-riddled body. From the palm of his hand, a brilliant light shone as he relentlessly drew closer to Hongjun.
“The living… are merely passing travelers…”
His deep voice resounded through the depths of the world, as the black fog that covered the sky and blanketed the earth receded before that light.
“The dead… return to their eternal homes.”
That light was the blazing sun that illuminated the heavens and the earth. It was the light of the stars that twinkled in the night sky. It was an everlasting Heart Lamp that pierced through the darkness.
“The heavens and the earth are… an inn; for all our grief we inevitably return… to dust.”
Li Jinglong closed his eyes, placing one hand on Hongjun’s forehead. The white light dispersed, illuminating the mountains of corpses and rivers of blood that filled the battlefield. In the shadows cast by the light of that lamp, the memories came: the flamboyant debauchery in Pingkang Li, the parasol tree in the Exorcism Department bathing in the light of the summer sun, the swirling sand and fluttering snow of Saiwai, the clear, spring-like sound of A-Tai’s song, the new green leaves that Mo Rigen and Lu Xu picked, the flying brushstrokes of Qiu Yongsi’s pen, which evolved into immortal verses that graced Li Bai’s cup —
A young nobleman strolled through the Eastern Market of Chang’an,
Enjoying the breeze as he rode his white horse on a silver saddle.
After admiring the falling flowers, where does he like to go?
He smiles as he enters a Hu-run wine shop.
Read it here, and remember to support our favorite chicken author by purchasing the raws!

i had liu yao on my list to read forever, never got around it and recommended it to a friend and now she asked what it's about. Could i ask you for a summary, pls? :)
Tumblr media
ANON YES BUT I'M NOT SURE I CAN GIVE A SHORT ONE
I rambled about liu yao here and here, so you can check if it's enough for you. The description on liu yao's carrd is also quite good:
What does it mean to seek immortality? Those who have ascended were human once, but do they ever stop yearning for the world they once roamed?
In the age of immortals and would-be immortals, ten-year-old Cheng Qian leaves his family to apprentice under the Sect Leader of the obscure Fuyao Mountain Sect. What follows next is a hundred-year-long tale of blood and sweat, tears and heartbreak, but also love and laughter, joy and triumph, and most importantly, a journey of finding that sometimes, a home isn’t always a place, but the beloved family that you make for yourself along the way.
And here I'll give/repeat a few points that I liked (tried to keep the info vague or as minor spoilers for the beginning of the novel):
the reader is closely taken through the character's cultivation progress (basically what I wrote here)
we meet the characters when they're small children and get to see their development, what exactly shaped them, why they had inclinations to some choices, or how their relationships with each other were built gradually and naturally
the characters aren't high and mighty from the start, which made them more real and relatable
typical for Priest's works subversion of some tropes, e.g. the spoiled and lazy peacock young master walks one of the toughest paths in Dao (which also usually produces aggressive and crude people, opposite to our niangniang), the cold-faced and snarky MC who is obsessed with getting stronger entered Dao through his heart, their shimei is quite unruly and powerful and there isn't fawning over her looks (which is what I usually see in danmei if a girlTM exists among the main characters); AND MORE, but i can't say much without more spoilers
cultivation and sects are kinda dissed instead of praised and fawned over, especially at the beginning, which was very fun and refreshing to read
I love how the pursuit of immortality is presented in liu yao. What even is immortality? If we shed all care about the world and ascend to merge with Dao... what's the difference between that and dying?
FOUND FAMILY AT ITS FINEST, LIKE LITERALLY THE DEFINITION OF THE TROPE
very slow burn, and the story pulled me in so much that I didn't even feel impatient for the romance
very funny, I laughed SO MUCH
but also cried :') I cry very rarely, so when a story manages to make me cry I gain additional respect for its ability to raise such emotions in a reader. And liu yao made me cry a few times :')
so yeah, it's a very interesting story with great world-building and a variety of distinct characters. It has some flaws ofc, sometimes the pacing got a bit slow and I had to harden myself to keep going, and the ending has a few open threads that could've been resolved but weren't. But I still love this novel so much 💚💚 one of my favs fr

Alright! I’m swooning - Zhan Beiyu? That man is staggeringly hot! Perhaps even hotter than Wuji.. Fuyao is lucky for sure after she dropped the potato that hot men keep arriving in her life. Even if they tie her up, lmao.
And I’m so glad we’re finally out of the sect mountain and moving to the capital. I’m sick and tired of potato and his now-wife. and his awful dad.. who literally advises his son to murder his wife, when she can’t benefit him anymore (with the poison meant for Fuyao ironically). But I guess given they‘re also going to the capital, Fuyao will meet them. Ugh.
BUT ALSO - is that guy who’s loyal to Qi Zhen.. loyal to Zhan Beiyi??? We did see that eagle, hmm.

Legend of Fu Yao
Tumblr media
Read English translated Chinese novel “Legend of Fu Yao” Description The archaeologist “red-haired witch” made too big of a disturbance while excavating tombs, gloriously becoming a martyr in the midst of the grave chamber’s collapse. Seventeen years later, she had transmigrated into the Five Regions Continent. The delinquent Meng Fuyao who struggled to survive in the lowest rungs of society, cast aside her boyfriend who was about to marry another person with a slice of his five fingers. “Believe me, she will be an absolutely perfect wife. With her by your side, you will be like an aristocrat and her luxury poodle – no matter where you go, your status will increase by a hundred-fold and complement each other perfectly.” Forsaken love, abandoned like dog shit. From then on it was a boundless sky and open sea, a trek of ten thousand li. To obtain the Seven States seals, fight against the world first. For the hope of return in her heart, brazenly collide with the Machiavellian royalty of the seven states, uniting the outstanding and talented under the heavens through fortuitous meetings. And so, will this road of chanced affection go through the peak of heavenly mountains and the warmth of bonfires; the glint of sword shadows and the coldness of the glance backwards; the autumn sun’s golden wind and the flying sweep of the robe sleeve; or that chilly moonlit forest and that sprint like an arrow’s? Once love and that chosen, narrow path cross each other, which will prevail? She said, I can dedicate myself to you, but if you do not want my body of hot blood, then I must draw your blood. She said, the efforts of my entire life have run in the opposite direction of true love, so are the heavens laughing at me? Then I guess I can only laugh at the heavens. Three chi of torn silk, one zhang of spilt blood. A thousand li of expanded territory, ten thousand fallen corpses. One day the Luan and Phoenix will soar up with the winds, and Fuyao will rise straight up, ninety thousand li. Show more Read the full article

what is liu yao about
(i can see you like it a lot so pls do not hold back if you want to rant. 2 sentences is also fine. but a rant is also cool)
aaaa ty you have no idea how much it means i don't get to talk about my blorbos often T-T ok so, i already answered an ask about liu yao but this time i'm gonna talk more about the story without spoiling too much
liu yao is a xianxia novel of how five children, Cheng Qian (the main protagonist, san-shixiong), Yan Zhengming (the da-shixiong), Li Yun (er-shixiong), Han Yuan (si-shixiong) and Han Tan/Shuikeng (shimei) are given a home and are taught cultivation by their shifu, Han Muchun, they face difficult challenges through their lives as they try to restore the Fuyao Mountain Sect and protect the family they built together, they're faced with ghosts from their own sect's past and its history that they yet have to learn. philosophy and taoist elements are DEEPLY ingrained in the story and the growth of the characters as people is linked to their growth as cultivators.
I think one of liu yao's strongests points is the theme of found family, you get to see the bond between characters grow, these kids go from finding each other annoying and insufferable to risking their lives to protect them and being willing to do anything for them (and somehow still finding each other annoying)
it's also great in questioning concepts about xianxia and cultivation in general, what does it mean for a person to go through such great lengths to achieve immortality, the way sects work and how much prejudice some of them can carry, if one should really prioritize cultivation and ascension over everything etc.
some people say they're not interested in liu yao because it has little romance but i disagree completely, there is plenty of romance but it's more slow burn and shown more through actions! the love is there and very clear, there's so much yearning, mutual overprotectiveness, funny misunderstandings bc cheng qian is oblivious and yan zhengming is a mess with his feelings (he's so terrible at hiding his feelings that if he isn't giving the others second-hand embarrasment they're making fun of him without mercy lol)
it's very heartwarming, funny and angsty at the same time, the lore is so interesting and i keep rereading my favorite parts over and over, you really grow attached to the characters and only wish the best for them aaaa i rly hope you can give it a read some time and find out for yourself how much more amazing it is!

His style has captivated me... Emotionless sniper who is considered more weapon than person on the clock; busks on the subway in his free time. Part of a clown4clown couple. Killed a human being for the first time at the age of 8. Apparently gives mind-blowingly good massages. Also had 'The Little Match Girl' fairy tale metaphor in the book which uh hurted me.

Honestly what a guy. He was dealt such a bad hand and yet he stays Chillin’… by which I mean sacrificing both his own morals and his physical safety to put a guy that he’s fundamentally ‘meh’ about at this point on the throne because everyone else is so much worse. He wants to be a dad so so badly it’s heartbreaking (until it isn’t!). He has Old Man Vibes™️ because he remembers three centuries worth of past lives and it makes him deeply weird but he’s still the prettiest boy anyone has ever seen. He was a jasmine plant for a while. 10/10 best at taking naps and pretending to be a loser. Go king give us nothing <3

But people were much more magnanimous towards Mu Xiaoqiao and those of his vile ilk, for as long as these fiends didn’t go around killing everyone in sight…or as long as this violence was directed at others instead, they could sometimes even find something perversely charming about these villains." (Bandits, book 3, chapter 13)  Callout for who? Callout for me. Pipi is very right about this but also she is the one writing her murderous gays so epic and sexy and fascinating and irresistible and…
Tong Ru / Lord Beiming from Liu Yao
Tumblr media
“Beiming? Who deserves the title of Beiming? That’s merely an arrogant title given by some short-sighted people.” - Lord Beiming, Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, Chapter 16
[No propaganda submitted]
“It’s just death, nothing serious.” - Lord Beiming, ch.30
***I, the poll runner, have not gotten to the Lord Beiming reveal, so I’m not 100% sure the quotes from where I’m at are correct/for the same person (since there’s another person trying to claim the title of Lord Beiming)
(Also, Tong Ru and Han Muchun are sharing a picture because it’s way too blurry with just one lol)
Wen Kexing from Faraway Wanderers

Character of all time (to me). Cannibal. Malewife. Flaming homosexual. Strongest mfer in jianghu after literal immortal. Surprisingly realistic portrayal of c-ptsd and dissociative disorder considering all of the above. Half of the couple that rewired my brain chemistry and gave me unrealistic expectations for romance -_-

Wu Xi from Lord Seventh / Qi Ye
Tumblr media
Submission:
My beloved snake boy!! He goes as a hostage to a foreign land at eleven years old in order to maintain uneasy peace between his country and the empire that colonized them (and on that note, his initial language struggle was so good), then he manages to help keep his love interest safe from thousands of kilometers away via peerless potions skills, then he goes and *wins his nation's freedom* via martial might and court negotiations, and then he heals his man and gets him home. Like bulletpoint by bulletpoint I think he might have actually managed to accomplish the most out of the cast by the end. (Qi Ye is a palace intrigue novel btw, so it's amazing that the one character who had zero patience with palace intrigue was the one who accomplished so much lmao.) And all this while being a 20-something borderline-yandere ML obsessed with his first love. What a man. What a legend. Not to mention his epic healer skills were the reason Zhou Zishu survives Faraway Wanderers. Wenzhou get their happy ending because of him! Also, he hand-raised the most lovable animal sidekick of all time (sable!!!!!) before said sable defected to his husband. Vote for Wu Xi to make sable happy.

Xi Ping from Tai Sui

Submission:
He is literally everything to me. Pure chaos condensed into a single person. Everyone loves him, everyone hates him. He does his best, he doesn't try at all, he beats up monsters with a qin, he brought about the destruction of the entire cultivation world…
Yan Zhengming from Liu Yao
Tumblr media
"I've grown into this age, but other than this face that my parents had birthed me with, there is nothing on my person that holds any sort of value. What right do I have to change the thousand-year tradition of our sect? In any case, even if the sect tradition makes no sense whatsoever, it's still something left behind by our master."  - Yan Zhengming, The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, Chapter 38
[No propaganda submitted]
The “Narcissist” from the description - “A cultivation story about how a declining sect is restored by a narcissist, troublemaker, meanie, idiot, and wimpy kid.”
THE prettiest princess; he’s literally referred to as Niangniang (a term for an imperial concubine) at least once
He is such a materialist who is even described as caring more about money than life, but "When he thought of Cheng Qian, he suddenly felt like there was nothing else that he desired in this life" (Ch.56).
Dealers’s Choice
Han Tan/Shuikeng/Puddle from Liu Yao
Tumblr media
"Puddle had one merit, and that was that she knew how to act when it came to her own benefit."  - Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect, Chapter 31
Little birb shimei lol
Is literally the daughter of the Yao Queen and a mortal who the others just. adopted.
The “wimpy kid” of the description - “A cultivation story about how a declining sect is restored by a narcissist, troublemaker, meanie, idiot, and wimpy kid.”

Summer Reading 2022 - A Summary :)
So... I didn't manage to execute my whole reading plan, but I'm rather satisfied with what I actually read.
~ * ~ * ~
🌊 The Girl Who Fell Beneath The Sea by Axie Oh - a fantasy YA story based on the Korean folktale The Tale of Shim Cheong. I actually wasn't sold on the romance part, but the world-building was great, and I loved the secondary characters ^^
🌪 The Dead Djinn Universe series by P. Djéli Clark - again, I didn't manage to fully connect with the main characters of different stories, but they were okay, and THE WORLD-BUILDING was so great! I liked the investigative plots of these books and the urban fantasy/steampunk vibe of 1920's Cairo, and I'd definitely go back to this world if there were more stories to come :)
📕 Eight Detectives by Alex Pavesi - mr Pavesi sir, MORE OF THIS PLEASE! Stories within the story, mystery within the mysteries, the old school detective vibes, literature and mathematics... I loved it!
🏞 The Easy Life in Kamusari by Shion Miura - yes, I read a book about the forestry industry slash living in a small mountain village in Japan. AND I LOVED IT.
🦋 Heaven Official's Blessing: volumes 2 & 3 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - I really like the Ghost City arc, the investigative team of Xie Lian, Shi Qingxuan and Lang Qianqiu is just hilarious :D And I survived Book 2 :')
Now my favourite arc (Revenant of Empty Words) has begun, so I'm waiting for volume 4! ^^
⚔️ Sword of Sorrow, Blade of Joy by JF Lee - entertaining wuxia stories :) I didn't manage to read the next two installments, but I plan to do that later.
💻 Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather by Sarah Pinsker - my new favourite fantasy/horror short story! I love stories told through unusual means (here: a collection of comments on a website) ^^
🚀 Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir - it wasn't on my list, but I just had a craving for sci-fi. And I wasn't disappointed, as this book is simply a love letter to science, engineering and humanity :)
~ * ~ * ~
As for on-going reading projects:
I caught up with the currently released chapters of The Snake and The Crane by Chichi,
I caught up with and then followed the currently translated chapters of Tianbao Fuyao Lu by Fei Tian Ye Xiang,
I followed Dracula Daily,
I finished re-reading Quenta Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Now, onto Autumn! 🍁🍁🍁
