Dolores del Río (Flying Down to Rio, Flor silvestre)—to begin with, dolores is so RADIANTLY BEAUTIFUL, even more so in action then in images, its like she emits a literal glow. marlene dietrich (a close friend and rumored lover) considered her "the most beautiful woman who ever set foot in hollywood". she was the first mexican actress to become a major success in hollywood, rising to fame in the silent era and becoming an influential icon of beauty and glamor in the art deco age, though she was not thrilled with the exoticizing parts often pushed on her. in the mid 1940s having tired of the controlling hollywood studio system she returned to mexico, saying "I wish to choose my own stories, my own director and cameraman. I can accomplish this better in mexico", and proceeded to become a pivotal figure in the golden age of mexican cinema, making a string of masterpieces with directir emilio fernández and cinematographer gabriel figueroa. i love this anecdote about the insane art deco mansion she and her then-husband cedric gibbons lived in in the 30s, as related by david niven: "Dolores had a large sunny room on the first floor containing a huge and inviting bed. Gibbons lived in comparative squalor in a small room immediately below. The only connection between these rooms was by way of a stepladder, which could be lowered only when a trapdoor in the floor of Dolores room had been raised. Fay Wray (King Kong)— the original scream queen!! she started acting in silent comedies as a teenager and got her first big break when erich von stroheim cast her as the lead in the wedding march. her career started to take off starring in silent movies at paramount, and she survived the transition to sound smoothly - josef von sternberg’s weird proto-noir thunderbolt was one of her first sound films. she began to make horror movies in the early 1930s, such as doctor x and mystery of the wax museum, both filmed in beautiful two-strip technicolor (which looked like this if you're curious. i just think it's neat!), as well as the vampire bat, the most dangerous game, and of course the boy himself, king kong. a little on how she worked with her most famous costar: “Although Kong appeared huge, the full figure was a model covered with rabbit hair, standing only 18 inches tall, that was filmed one frame at a time by stop-motion photography artist Willis O'Brien and his crew. The 5ft 3in Wray only knew one part of the ape's body when she was grasped in an articulated 8ft long hand. Hence the title of her 1989 autobiography, On The Other Hand. ‘I would stand on the floor,’ she recalled, ‘and they would bring this arm down and cinch it around my waist, then pull me up in the air. Every time I moved, one of the fingers would loosen, so it would look like I was trying to get away. Actually, I was trying not to slip through his hand.’” (link)

She started in Silent films and successfully transitioned to sound, She is the first woman to wear a two piece swimsuit on screen & popularized the bikini!, She transitioned back to Mexican Cinema in the late 1940s and was a leading lady of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema including staring in Maria Candelaria--the first Mexican film to win the palm d'Or at Cannes. She was literally studied for her beauty & was considered a beauty ideal in both the USA & Mexico--there's a whole section on her Wikipedia page about how beautiful everyone thinks she was. She never actually had a feud with any of the female stars she was rumored to feud with despite the fact that press & Hollywood culture attempted to pain them in competition... She remained a leader in Mexican theater & Cinema through her own production company. Mexican painter Diego Rivera: "The most beautiful, the most gorgeous of the west, east, north and south. One of the few Latin American women working in the Hollywood industry to make it big not just in hre home country but internationally. In 1931, Photoplay magazine declared that Mexican film actress Dolores del Rio had the "best figure in Hollywood." (which I know not necessarily a good barometer) but! it shows that many people looked at her for her beauty and sought to emulate her. Famous for her years-long love affair with actor and director Orson Welles, who was 10 years her junior if that's anything.
We need more hispanic representation in this!! Del Río is one of the most important actresses of her time as she was one of the first Mexican movie stars to break through to Hollywood! She’s unbelievably sexy and an absolute icon. Thank you :)
Fay Wray:
Actress prominently known for starring in horror, she was one of cinema's original "scream queens". She knocks it out of the park whenever she's with the horror genre, bringing a depth and likability to characters that would other be flat and boring characters.

She was name-dropped not once but TWICE in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. She's arguably the original Scream Queen.

Good Omens Aziraphale's Sad Bastard Breakup Playlist
After the breakup, Aziraphale has a new job in heaven, having taken Gabriel’s vacant position. Aziraphale is haunted by sad music reminding him of his time with Crowley. The songs are dramatic, tragic, melancholic, angry, wistful, romantic, and sentimental. How does he listen to music at his new job in the head office? Are material objects allowed? Does he keep a secret stash of tea, cake, and records and a phonograph player in his office? Does he have a celestial radio that can tune in Earth radio stations? Does he sneak off to Earth to hang out in record shops and bookstores? P.P.P.P.S.: “Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” is as close as Aziraphale can get to telling the world and Crowley to eff off. He has no more effs to give. Or at least he’s trying to convince himself he no longer gives a f***. He’s going off to his new job at the head office and Do Good.
Note on song selection:
I selected songs that thematically fit with the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. I think the songs tell a story of Aziraphale’s struggle to reconcile his conflicted motivations. They reflect Aziraphale’s fears and desires. He fears being hauled off to hell for disobedience. He fears Crowley’s death and being alone in the world. He desires to be emotionally intimate with Crowley. (Dare he risk physical intimacy with Crowley?) He feels self-righteously indignant, but he’s soft and squishy and weepy and misses his best friend.
I don’t have much knowledge of opera or musical theater, but I have some experience with choir and solo performance. I did a lot of research into opera, art songs, musicals, showtunes, and standards to create a playlist on YouTube. Selections were based on availability, popularity, and sound quality. My big question was whether or not Aziraphale is a strict originalist or if he likes different versions of songs. In some places, I chose newer versions over original versions due to the sound quality of the recordings. I tried to keep selections accessible to a wide audience with varying degrees of musical knowledge. You may not like my choices, so your mileage may vary. You can make your own playlist.

why flan is a lesbian (and why it’s important)
when i first read tb8, i thought, “well, i think flan is a lesbian, but maybe that’s just projection,” and then i went online and saw that everyone else had come to the same conclusion. now i actually do think theres quite a bit of canon evidence pointing to her being gay. this post puts it really really well :)
spoilers below cut
for one thing can we talk about how differently flan talks about female characters from male characters in general? if you look at how she describes the photograph in the beginning it’s obvious. flantasha nation for life but how many times has flan gone on about jennifer rose milton being beautiful or v____ looking pretty? not even adam gets description to this extent.
also, transvioletbaudelaire made a really good point about flan’s reaction to this. it was a big tonal shift despite the paragraph having nothing to do with what was going on. flan was more affected by a few sentences about being gay than the rest of ron’s speech about adam being missing……

something i’ve recently noticed is that most of natasha’s idols are queer. marlene dietrich had the first on-screen kiss between two women ever, as well as being openly into women irl. bette davis and dorothy parker were historically popular within gay communities, and anais nin wrote about wlw sex in her diary. this is coming from the book that foreshadowed douglas’s sexuality by having him be associated w/ gay artists!!!!
even natasha’s very first and last mentions are associated with gayness. her first mention being how she watched a fellini movie with flan (context says it’s la dolce vita, which has an explicitly gay plotline), and of course, dr. tert explicitly stating that a version of natasha is a lesbian (!!) ofc dr. tert isn’t the most reliable source, but the point is that after you just finished the book, the final thought youre meant to have about natasha is that she’s gay!!!
another one of the most important scenes is halloween, which literally opens with natasha pinning flan to her bed. then, natasha yells at flan to break up with gabriel and get over adam. natasha empathizes in her speech that flan isn’t being true to herself by liking them. considering that flan is natasha and usually natasha has more awareness over what flan knows but can’t admit.....
and then they go upstairs and undress together.

they were constantly looking at each other’s bodies
flan feeling “liquid and naughty” when they did. even before putting on the dress, she feels powerful.
“[natasha] looked at me as i felt the sudden true flush of desire.” <- actual line from the book
later during the party, while flan and adam are having sex, flan spends half the paragraph thinking about how gorgeous she/natasha is. flan really does not miss an opportunity to talk about natasha’s beauty throughout the book lmao

another thing flan does is describe natasha using romantic metaphors.
like she literally associates natasha’s gum with a kiss and then admits to using pathetic fallacy.
flan does it a lot throughout the book.
and not just that. natasha also plays the role of a boyfriend in flan’s life, and flan is always happier to be with natasha than with gabriel or adam.
and when adam flakes on his date with flan, natasha literally takes her out to the movies.
speaking of movies, the day flan was supposed to go to the movies as a date with gabriel is the first day that she helps douglas hide his homosexuality. most of flan’s friends’ issues mirror flan’s own, as shown in the halloween party. callous breakups, jealousy, etc. struggling with being gay in a homophobic society is a major theme in the book with characters like douglas and ron, and it would make sense for flan to experience it, too, even if she doesn’t realize.
a lot of gabriel and flan’s relationship reads to me as a metaphor for comphet. not only does flan not like him, but she talks about how things are supposed to be.
(also, on the previous page, flan compares kissing gabriel to opening an old carton of milk. she isn’t thrilled lol)

even though flan’s feelings for adam are more intense than the ones for gabriel, they’re also forced to a certain extent.
heres the first time she talks about adam:
natasha is shocked. if flan truly loved adam, wouldnt she love him fully? if she did, natasha’s inital reaction would be supportive, but instead she just makes fun of him. flan never even admits why she likes adam, not even to herself. flan doesn’t even think that she and adam will work out, judging by her hesitancy. over and over, natasha tells flan that adam is a jerk and to get over him.
flan tries very hard to convince herself that she likes adam, and it works. she’s telling everyone (and herself) that she loves adam while also avoiding him and not having any reason to love him, other than the superficial.
“he is the only appropriate person for me to like”
natasha didn’t find out gabriel’s crush on flan until september 21st, over 60 pages later. lily might have known, but who was natasha thinking about???
also, flan and adam are also cast as husband and wife in the play. they are literally playing the parts that were given to them!!

even though flan has gotten herself in deep, there have been multiple times where flan almost does get over adam! she mentions feeling bored of him, avoiding him, just not caring until he always ropes her back in at the last minute. she’s put her self-worth in his opinion of her, and doesn’t give up until the very end.
from the beginning, adam was always more of a symbol than a person. he represents men as a whole, or the idea of them. flan literally falls in love with an image of a man (the statue of david) rather than an actual one, and projects that image onto adam. kate and flan talk about how they would be better off without all the adams.

all her life, flan has been fed these societal expectations on what kind of relationships she should have and who she should be. she clings onto those expectations, even when she never loved adam to begin with. it takes her until halloween to accept that whether he likes her or not doesn’t matter -- he’s a jerk. in general flan’s arc is about how societal pressures, to act a certain way, look a certain way, love a certain way, etc etc can mess with their own self perception and maybe cause them to kill someone.

Next month is the annual exhibitor showcase Cinemacon where movie studios tout their wares for the very anxious theater owners.
It has already been announced that Sony is sitting this year out, so no info on VENOM 3: THE LAST DANCE, to be released October 25, 2024.
While I assume there will be some changes to the lineup, so far it is shaping up to be:
OPENING DAY: International Day features a screening of Universal 80s series remake THE FALL GUY starring Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (who has said in a recent interview that it is a small role) ; directed by David Leitch (BULLET TRAIN, DEADPOOL 2)
DAY ONE: WB pulls up with their presentation "The Big Picture". It will be the first Cinemacon for James Gunn in his position as Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios.
I expect a song and dance from Gunn about how awesome sauce the new DC film universe will be
I'll believe it when I see it.
Sure to tease SUPERMAN LEGACY which stars David Corenswet as the title character, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

DAY TWO: ANGEL STUDIOS - The outfit behind SOUND OF FREEDOM.
I suspect they will tease SIGHT starring Greg Kinnear and BONHOEFFER (aka GOD'S SPY) about German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, starring August Diehl, Flula Borg and Clarke Peters.
LIONSGATE: I suspect they will tease Guy Ritchie's THE MINISTRY OF UNGENTLEMANLY WARFARE starring a pick-a-mix of men for all tastes - Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Alex Pettyfer, Henry Golding and Hero Fiennes Tiffins
; the action-thriller BOY KILLS WORLD fronted by Bill Skarsgård and costarring Sharlto Copley, Andrew Koji (who is working like mad), Famke Janssen and Isaiah Mustafa.
Surely, another Bill Skarsgård film THE CROW with fka Twigs
; THE STRANGERS: CHAPTER 1, which is the third film in the franchise - doing a bit of FAST AND THE FURIOUS mathing. It stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Guittierez and Gabriel Basso
At long last the BALLERINA has pliete into the spotlight. This JOHN WICK spinoff stars Ana De Armas, with Anjelica Huston reprising her role from JOHN WICK 2. It's direct by Len Wiseman who directed the UNDERWORLD films starring his ex-wife Kate Beckinsale.
BORDERLANDS, an action-comedy based on the game, brought to the screen by Eli Roth. Starring Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Haley Bennett and Édgar Ramírez, amongst others.
and WHITE BIRD, which is in the same universe as the excellent children geared film WONDER. It was due to come out in 2023 but was pushed back due to the actors strike.
UNIVERSAL / FOCUS FEATURES: I suspect teases for Dev Patel's directorial debut MONKEY MAN. The film was originally slated to go to Netflix but Jordan Peele, under his Monkey Paw shingle, bought it and took it to Universal so it could have a theatrical release. *Granted, Netflix does a theatrical release for most of their films in certain markets, but I get Peele's rationale.
Their Monsters Universe theatrical idea didn't work, but Universal has realized there is more than one way to skin a cat. They are creating a Universal Monsters themed area at their parks and their monster/horror film ABIGAIL is a re-imaging of DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. It stars Alisha Weir, Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens and features Angus Cloud in one of his last roles.
THE FALL GUY most definitely will have a place. Same with THE BIKERIDERS (with Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, etc.), which was a 20th Century (Disney owned) Film, and even though it was the first major film out the gate ahead of Oscars/Golden Globes' FYC season with a screening and Q&A held in L.A., the studio purposely stalled the engine and towed it off their schedule. It will now be distributed by Focus Features in the U.S., and Universal, internationally.
Other possible teases? DESPICABLE ME 4, TWISTERS, the standalone sequel to the 90s film TWISTERS
, horror film SPEAK NO EVIL starring James McAvoy and Mackenzie Davis

Hey girlie!! You’re not bothering me at all, I’m going through a major life transformation at the moment.
Choosing An Alternative Name
When we think of fake, we know it means not real or a false reality, which causes us to detach ourselves to switch from 1 realistic reality to an wishful reality.
1) View Your Alt Name as a Nickname.
For example, my name is my name. The sky is the limit. If I wanted to be Chanel, I am Chanel. Chanel is no different than Khalyiah, except she is. Get what I mean?
2) Do Consider Names You Played as from Childhood.
Belle, Ariel, Sasha, Gabrielle. Even if you think it was cringy when you were 4, it may hold weight at 24 years old. I believe some names repeat in your life for a reason and I’d refer to those for ideas.
3) Ignore everyone else. Being self conscious is a feeling, not a condition.
4) Be absolutely ridiculous when thinking of names.
Being silly [to you] when choosing names changes it from being a chore to going down lists for what feels like you and what doesn’t.
You don’t think Marie Dietrich fits you? Well, ok? Who cares!! Aubrie Love? Hannah Mason? Strawberry Fudge? Have fun with it!!! It literally doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about your name.
5) Give every name a trial run.
Practice writing your signature, repeating your name back to yourself, introducing yourself as Chanel, making purchases with your alternative name and seeing how far you can go with your chosen name.

Paris, August 1944: the Allies had broken out of their Normandy beach heads and were advancing east and south, driving their defeated German foes before them, but for Helmut and Hans, the British and American troops, now on the outskirts of Paris, may as well have been a thousand miles away. Lost in the reverie of Madame Dubois’ “recreation apartment”, the two servicemen had anything but the war on their mind…
Louise extended her hand to Hans who kissed it gently while Marie Dubois looked on. “Nice to see you again, sailor boy..” the young woman teased, striking in her orange red filmy dress. “Mmmmm…” replied the naval rating dreamily and closed his eyes.
Marie ran her fingers through the German’s blonde hair. “Louise will take very good care of you tonight, my love,” she told him with a sweet yet maternal smile on her lips but her eyes were fixed the younger woman with a meaningful look, “won’t you, my beauty?”
Meanwhile, Marlene Dietrich sounded from the scratchy gramophone and over at the other side of the room, Helmut clung to the scantily clad Gabrielle as though his life depended upon it. The blonde woman looked over to her friends as she gripped her dancing partner’s neck tightly. “You see, I am wearing the stockings you love so much, my brave soldier,” she told the lusting man even as her eyes fixed on those of Louise.

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep?
it depends! he sleeps really light-- a lot of things will wake him up, and sometimes he's not even sure why he's waking up, just that he's alert. at the same time, he'll get sleep wherever and whenever he can get it, no matter how long. if all he can get is a 5 minute power nap slouched in a chair, he'll take it.
Dante has started worming his way into bed with Hide, and Hide has given up on trying to tell him to get down. He'd be lying if he said having the dog there didn't help him sleep sounder <3
☕️ HOT BEVERAGE - do they prefer hot or cold drinks? what is their favourite drink?
He prefers hot drinks over cold-- he drinks a fair share of herbal (imitation) and actual herbal teas. Altug's winning him over with real coffee though
🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it?
Freedom-- freedom from things that are haunting him, both mentally and physically, and freedom to do what he wants when he wants where he wants. This is hard for him at first, because he doesn't KNOW what he wants. He follows in Monika's exact footsteps for a bit as he tries to figure it out, and now he's just happy to support his team while he figures himself out.
Fun fact! He faked his death before becoming a Shadowrunner and left everything he'd grown up around behind. So he's willing to go pretty far, I think ashkjafkjhda
Without going too far into it, because I will just infodump for several paragraphs, Hide was picked off the street and raised in a secret corpo program. Now he's grappling with the death of Monika AND Paul and his own stuff. He also chooses to try and help APEX, but APEX ends up. Not too fond of him.
📦 PACKAGE - what are some "most likely to..." that can apply to them?
Most likely to start tech conversations with random strangers while out and about
Most likely to act way too calm despite the situation going on around him
Most likely to repeat corporate lingo and get teased by Dietrich and Blitz, no matter how true it is eskjhfsejkfh
🚲 BICYCLE - can they ride a bike? what do they remember from learning to ride a bicycle?
He can! He learned as a kid after Renraku picked him up off the streets. It was a pretty big deal to him as a kid, because it was a nice bike and someone was bothering to take the time to teach him. At the time, it won a lot of loyalty and affection from him toward the program he was in.
☁️ CLOUD - a soft headcanon
The team all learn his given name, Gabriel, during the story of Dragonfall. He didn't willingly share it-- it was dragged out of him by a bloodmage during a run-- and he was clearly uncomfortable that it even happened. But each of the team has slowly come to use his given name in softer moments, or moments where they need to get through to him, and he actually really likes it. It feels right, and always tugs at his heartstrings in some deep aching way when it happens.
💗 GROWING HEART - if they have a crush, is it noticable? what changes when they're in love?
Hide's never really had a crush before! It's just not something he usually thinks about or looks for, but he's not adverse to the idea. He's more the type to realize after 5 years of being friends with someone that he could like them romantically (but maybe only after someone else points it out or suggests it). He's more looking for friendships and family at the moment, and the idea never really crosses his mind. Regardless of the kind of love, when Hide is really close with someone, he's very thoughtful without having to be asked-- noticing little things you need done and doing them for you without mentioning it, and similar sort of gestures.

I can accomplish this better in mexico", and proceeded to become a pivotal figure in the golden age of mexican cinema, making a string of masterpieces with directir emilio fernández and cinematographer gabriel figueroa. i love this anecdote about the insane art deco mansion she and her then-husband cedric gibbons lived in in the 30s, as related by david niven: "Dolores had a large sunny room on the first floor containing a huge and inviting bed. She started in Silent films and successfully transitioned to sound, She is the first woman to wear a two piece swimsuit on screen & popularized the bikini!, She transitioned back to Mexican Cinema in the late 1940s and was a leading lady of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema including staring in Maria Candelaria--the first Mexican film to win the palm d'Or at Cannes. She was literally studied for her beauty & was considered a beauty ideal in both the USA & Mexico--there's a whole section on her Wikipedia page about how beautiful everyone thinks she was. She never actually had a feud with any of the female stars she was rumored to feud with despite the fact that press & Hollywood culture attempted to pain them in competition...
