He can kiss him secretly when they are robbing Ned's ex-wife. He can start making out with him right before his wedding as a last hurrah to save their relationship. He just can't talk it out.

I love Gallavich, I do.

It's a seminal lgbt+ love story involving two defined individual queer characters who're products of their oppressively violent environment but who drag eachother away from becoming their worst case scenarios.

It's messy but sincere and extremely well-acted throughout the shows entire run.

Their story is the heart of Shameless (US), connecting the series from its beginning to its end (same for Kev and V but their season to season shenanigans have little continuity). Ian and Mickey's love story reminds the viewer of how good the show used to be by allowing two characters who've loved eachother since season one, who were tortured by the narrative and constantly torn apart by circumstance, the pathos of a happy ending they fought for and deserved.

However, it's obvious to me that none of the Gallagher love interests in Shameless were meant to be characters in their own right. They were character assessments. A psychoanalysis of the Gallagher they were with and changed on a whim depending on what John Wells wanted to say about Fiona, Lip, Debbie, and Carl. Mickey's legacy and what he meant to people took John Wells by surprise. The writers were blindsided by the response to his character.

I don't think John Wells ever intended for Mickey to be an independent player or Ian's endgame. My speculation is the writers still don't understand how impactful Mickey overcoming fear and hate to embrace love and bravery was. Nor how unique the message was that two poor, abused, violent, "white trash" queer teens could learn to help, heal, and love eachother without a roadmap.

I don't think they ever understood why Mickey and Gallavich received the critical acclaim they did, even if I do think they tried. The writers were too deep in Hollywood thinking to get how important a character like Mickey Milkovich was to people who could relate intimately with his struggles. In their minds Mickey was always a thuggish stepping stone to Ian's eventual upward mobility. If Mickey had stayed throughout the entire run of the show I imagine both characters would've been Pretty Woman'd by a love interest with status, money, and appropriate coping mechanisms. Or Ian would've been Pretty Woman'd while Mickey fell into darkness as a black reflection of what Ian could've become.

So it's for this reason that I say, "I love Gallavich but.." They never develop balance or work through the mountain of emotional baggage that is heaped upon them.

Mickey's no1. priority is Ian and Ian's no1. priority is Ian (this isn't me Ian bashing, there are complex inworld reasons for why this is so, but mostly it's the narrative naturally prioritising the Gallaghers'), and the Sitcom framing of the later seasons does not give two characters forged in a Drama the breathing room necessary to touch upon their shared history and trauma.

So I love Gallavich, I do, but in someone else's hands they could've been an epic and powerful love story that defied convention (👀 look at all that wonderful fanfic). But I was often frustrated by the story that was actually told onscreen, filling in the blanks of their development myself using what I knew about both characters.

I was rewatching Gallavich scenes, as one does at 3 am, and I just noticed a detail so wholesome that it would be a crime not to share it. In season 4 episode 7, aka the episode where Mandy gets Mickey to go look for Ian, there is this scene in which Kev wants a gun and he goes to the Milkoviches to get it. There he asks Mickey if he is wearing cologne and Mickey says that it's just Kenyatta's perfumed soap.

BULLSHIT.

Mickey obviously didn't admit it but he was wearing cologne because he intended to see Ian for the first in a while and he wanted to smell good. That's the obvious wholesome detail about this scene. But wait. There's something more that I just noticed.

MICKEY WAS TRYING TO PICK A NICE OUTFIT TO GO MEET IAN AND HE HAD LAID OUT ALL OF HIS GOOD SHIRTS KSHDKSKSHDHS. THE FAN SERVICE GOES FUCKING CRAZY WITH THIS ONE.

NOT ONLY DID MICKEY MILKOVICH WEAR FUCKING COLOGNE, HE ALSO CHOSE TO LOOK HIS FUCKING BEST TO SEE IAN. I CAN'T THIS IS TOO FUCKING MUCH.

Obsessed with this picture, obsessed with what Phil Dunster said in a recent interview: 

“There’s a really wonderful episode — Episode 6 I think — people are gonna enjoy. I won’t give any specifics, but there’s a scene that has probably been one of my favorite scenes to film — particularly with Brett, but maybe of the whole show — where we just were given free rein to sort of mess about for like half an hour. It’s a deepening of the relationship, a deepening of conflict that goes on throughout the season. There’s security between the two of them of like a covert emotional maturing. Again, I think that the audience wouldn’t necessarily appreciate it if all of a sudden the two of them are like Beard and Ted Lasso. There’s a deepening of all elements and characteristics, but also a softening overall.” 

The sixth episode of season 1 and 2 were both big episodes for Jamie, with him taking important steps (either by opening up to the team at the curse removal or convincing Roy to coach him and finding a way to channel his inner prick to something useful) and I’m just really hoping for a hat trick here.

(I’m writing in English because I think it’s the most known language in other countries too, I know for example that many of the fandom are in Brazil and Spain! I’ve been feeling broken ever since I finished watching the season (one of the most important people in my life had a similar personal experience to both Patrick and Ivan, and seeing her being sick and reliving that moment destroyed me) and while we were talking about it, an idea came to us. My friend is very realistic, so she thinks it's crazy, I agree with that but I'm also a dreamer who believes a lot in positive energy, so I'll try to tell you our idea!

Why don't we try to make our voices heard? I think that we absolutely cannot accept such an ending! We Patrivan fans are so many, if we unite we could really make a difference! Besides, the precedents are there: we got a last season of Manifest, we got a worthy ending for Lucifer, we got Gallavich! GALLAVICH WEDDING!

The only social media we can focus on is Twitter, because it’s the most media relevant. Going trend is not difficult, the problem is that to do it we need to be many and coordinated... I was thinking we could organize a group (on telegram? Discord?...) and try to go viral!

I said I'm a dreamer, but I know perfectly well that we are unlikely to get the endgame WE DESERVE, more so because of Carlos, whose only purpose in his career seems to be to ruin every good thing he creates (the most relevant examples? Omander, Samu and Carla, Guzman and Nadia, Rebe made to disappear into a black hole...). But we have nothing to lose! Also, Manu and Andre said that they follow the couple on social media, going on trend would be a gift for them too, a thank you for all the good things they have given us with their prowess!

As said, it is an idea! If there is anyone who would like to participate, or maybe better at social than me who knows how to get more people to participate please write to me! Even in private!
