Ok, Gaya sa pelikula last episode destroyed me in a bad and in a good way. I waited many months before deciding to watch eps 6-7-8, I couldn't say goodbye to them.

I can't stand open endings, usually I want a closure: good or bad I don't care. For them this narrative it's perfect. Sometimes you meet the right person at the wrong time. Suddenly this person makes you question things and it can be overwhelming, too much to handle.

He's out and proud, he wants to live under the sun his love because he already lived in a secret relationship. He's right. Then there's him, a person who never questioned his sexual orientation. This guy enters in his life and day after day you see your whole world changing. You're scared af, you're not ready to be out and proud. Surrounded by the walls of your house you're safe with him.

Impasse, that's what it is. No, love it's not the cure for everything.

Vlad said something really meaningful: you're not ready, you're entitled to take your time like I'm entitled to wanting to show my love freely.

I cried. I loved so much how they handled the last fast forward minutes: Karl was able to say that he's gay outside the walls of his house. That's the open ending that should have a 2nd season. I mean, months ago when the scandal came out, they already promised a s2. I know that after My engineed s2 and History 2 Cross the line movie I shouldn't trust anyone, but I want to be hopeful.

Karl and Vlad deserve an happy ending with another amazing season.

Oh what a fun ask!! 9 and 13, those are my favorite tropes. Honestly, if there was a combination of it in BL that would be my never ending favorite.

9. Fake Dating

The execution of this trope that has brought me the most delight in BL is Gaya Sa Pelikula (Like In The Movies). Especially because Karl's landlord is his uncle who literally doesn't care whether Karl pays him rent or not, so Karl didn't HAVE to fake date Vlad for rent money, he just convinced himself that he did. Ah, the rituals, they are intricate.

13. Grumpy/Sunshine

Shiro's so happy and smiley these days it's on the edge of no longer being their entire dynamic, but What Did You Eat Yesterday (Kinou Nani Tabeta?) is my winner. The important bit of grumpy/sunshine that often gets either missed or overshot is that you have to feel the love all up and through the grumpiness or else the dynamic isn't enjoyable: the grump feels mean and you wonder why the sunshine puts up with it. Shiro and Kenji are pitched perfectly.

what bl do you recommend for someone who never manages to watch more than three episodes of the bl series out there, doesn't like super cheesy romance so the thai white-shirted boys don't work, doesn't want too much hot and heavy stuff so kinnporsche doesn't work, doesn't want pointless second hand embarrassment, doesn't want sexuality discovery, doesn't want women constantly trying to break the couple, wants to laugh a little but doesn't want a comedy, a bl for someone very picky who just wants to have a good time honestly. i've tried a lot of bls but all of them seem like the same thing over and over. i'm almost hopeless in finding a bl to watch and i'm asking because the way i see it you're quite the expert on the area

Hello anon!! I feel your pain :( I was in like a year slump when it came to BL because everything seemed to mesh together. It can feel hopeless but you just have to find that “one” to pull you in. Unfortunately, it sometimes takes a lot of trial and error. I went through and complied a list of BL that hopefully you haven’t tried seen before. But definitely try to experiment with BL from different countries because each country has different “niches.” I really hope one of these works for you though <3

He’s Coming to Me (8ep x 75min || Youtube)

In this short supernatura Thai romance BL, a young man (Thun, played by Ohm Pawat), tries to help a kind ghost (Mes, played by Singto Prachaya) figure out the mystery behind his death. As they work on unraveling secrets, discovering betrayal, and navigating life (slash the afterlife), Mes and Thun fall in love. If you like your BL to be heartwarming & wholesome (but not too sweet it’ll give you cavities) with a dose of angst give HCTM a try. *HCTM is still one of the most underrated BL out there. It does have a tad bit of sexuality discovery but it’s handled in a very nuance and beautiful way.

History 2: Right or Wrong (8ep x 25min || Viki)

One of the more underappreciated additions to the HIStory series, History 2: Right or Wrong gives us a BL about a divorced single father and a college student. It has found family, age gap (done in a healthy manner), and wonderfully fleshed-out characters. If you like a more mature romance that isn't heavy on the Kinnporsche-level steamy skinship, domestic fluff that actually has a plot, and characters actually going through character development I highly rec History 2: Right or Wrong.

GAYA SA PELIKULA/Like in the Movies (8ep x 30min || Youtube)

Gaya Sa Pelikula came out during the Great Wave of 2020 PINOY BLs and it still holds its stop as my #1 BL during that year. I know you want to avoid sexuality discovery but I still had to include this for the simple fact that it's top-notch. Gaya Sa Pelikua is about Karl and Vlad, two different people from two different walks of life who ends up living as housemates for awhile. Karl is suffocating under the pressure of his family while Vlad is getting over a breakup. They intially don’t get along but as time goes by they help each other actually live rather than just going through the motion. If you like your BL to be packed with emotion and to actually discuss LGBTQ+ issues in a frank manner please go watch this. I know you dislike coming out stories but Gaya Sa Pelikula is one of the best of the best of the BL genre because it’s so much more than that. 

Not Me (14ep x 45min || Youtube)

White and Black (both played by Gun Atthaphan) has a close connection but are seperated when they are children: one stays with their mother in Thailand while the other moves to Russia with their father. Years later, White returns to Thailand after Black is viciously attacked and sent into a coma. Since his brother hung around with a ‘sketchy’ gang, he decides to pretend to be his brother to find out what truly happens. This is a BL that is not solely focused on romance (although the romance that is shown is wonderful). It’s groundbreaking because it’s not just a silly college BL: it discusses real issues that are happening in Thailand today such as corruption, inequality, politics, etc. If you like your BL to have complex/layered characters & plots, give Not Me a try.

Ghost Host, Ghost House (8ep x 57min || Youtube)

This recent Thai BL is about Kevin, a live-streamer who is passionate about ghost hunting. He ends up moving in with some relatives who end up being ghosts (irony) and meets Pluem. Neither of the protags are ghost but this does dish into trauma and grief. However, it’s not super angsty or anything like that because the natural chemistry between the characters is solid. This is more of a character driven BL but that’s what makes it so good. We get to learn about all the characters and connect to them, which makes it painful when you have to say goodbye (but don’t fear, again, the two protags are alive). If you like your BL to be a bit eerie and heartwarming at the same time give Ghost Host, Ghost House a try!!

Triage (13ep x 44min || AIS Play)

In this time loop romance BL, Tinn is a doctor who, one day, finds himself repeating the same day over and over. Since he fails at saving one of his patients, Tol, the only way to stop the time loop is to actually save him. Mature BL that doesn’t focus on high school kids or set in college are honestly the way to go. The plots are meaty and just because the characters are older that doesn’t mean that super steamy skinship is required. I just started this yesterday so I’m not finished but so far I highly recommend it. Again, if you like BL that isn’t solely focused on romance please give Triage a try!!

3 Will Be Free (10ep x 50min || Youtube)

3wbf is not really a BL but it’s going on the list because it’s criminally underrated. Without giving away too much of the plot, 3wbf essentially gives us a canon poly relationship between a stripper, the son of a mafia boss, and a gogo bar manager. It gives us a trans character who is not played for laughs and has a legit powerful plotline complete with romance. Everything about 3wbf is top tier. From the acting to the plot to the characters to the cinematography.

Blueming (11ep x 14min || IQIYI)

Blueming is a well loved BL for a reason: it’s amazing. Despite being short, it manages to tell a coherent and interestig story. It’s not just a silly romance, it’s intimate and talks about heavy things like insecurities...yet the audience does not get weighed down with angst. If you like more nuanced or quiet BL that focuses on characters are indiviuals themselves, their family relations, and their relationship as a couple do give Blueming a try!

To My Star 1 & 2 (9ep x 15min || Viki)

Two polar opposites: a famous actor who is going through a rough patch meets and falls for a young chef, end up falling in love. This has a second season which I didn’t watch yet but I still heard good things about it. If you like the cohabitation trope and want to see two wonder characters blossom as individuals go check this out!

Old Fashion Cupcake (5ep x 25min || Viki)

Once again, BL that focuses on adults in the workplace are top tier. Old Fashion Cupcake follows 39-year old Nozue who is just going through the same motions in life. He ends up falling in love with his subordinate at work who is ten years his junior. Old Fashion Cupcake feels like being wrapped in a big blanket as you munch on your favorite comfort food. It’s soft and lovely and genuinely amazing. The way these characters build each other up. If you like realistic BL and character driven stuff, give this short JBL a try!

Cherry Magic (12ep x 24min || IrozukuSubs)

I won’t lie to you, Cherry Magic is mostly fluff but I had to include it. In case you have yet to give this a try, please do. The premise is bonkers: Adachi is a 30 year old virigin who gains the ability to read minds when people touch him. He ends up finding out that his coworker, Kurosawa has been pining for him for years. Do you like your BL to have respectful, wonderful, and relatable characters? Do you like to occasionally turn off your brain and watch something that is silly but full of heart? Cherry Magic proves that sometimes you don’t need an elaborate plot to be interesting. You just need sweet characters and an even sweeter romance. *Cherry Magic also has a few specials + film out!!*

Top 10 BLS Featuring Grown Up Characters

Here are some of my favorite BLs that feature mature characters with adult problems. Of course the definition of “mature” is pretty culturally specific but I did my best. 

1. Old Fashion Cupcake 

Japan, Viki & GaGa  

This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits for episode one. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said man with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s coming of age/queerness packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity and love and loneliness... and it’s beautiful. Full review here. 

2. To My Star (movie) 

Korea, Viki 

It’s is a touch quirky to get into, but utterly charming once it hits its stride. This is the ultimate grumpy/sunshine pairing plus the most appealing light-filled kitchen of our dreams. Full review here. 

3. My Ride 

Thailand, GaGa 

Thai BL grew up with this pulp - a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine AKA a cinnamon roll couple. Mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple. Full review here. 

4. Be Loved In House: I Do 

Taiwan, Viki 

Cute classy office set BL with a few plot raised eyebrows, but no other concerns, plus ALL THE TROPES and a general sweet softness that’s pretty rare from Taiwan, who usually prefer to go hard. Full review here. 

5. Mr Cinderella 

AKA Chàng Lọ Lem - Vietnam, YT

Higher production values and experienced BL actors plus two charismatic smoldering leads with good kissing and comfortable body language makes this Vietnam’s objectively best BL to date. But it’s Vietnam, so for me the characters aren’t exactly mature. Full review here. 

6. Like In The Movies 

AKA Gaya Sa Pelikula - Pinoy, YT 

Karl runs short of funds and ends up becoming housemates with Vald an out and proud chaos gay. This leads Karl into an identity crisis and journey of self discovery. This kind of forced proximity trope is really common in BL, but what Gaya does is handle it in a messy honestly queer way. It includes Vlad’s attitude in response to Karl’s shaken behavior, and the frustration many out queers feel in this exact situation. 

7. Cherry Magic 

AKA 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard AKA 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii - Japan, Crunchyroll & Indie Subbed

The sweetest fluffiest magical realism BL, packaged as a pinning office romance, very low heat (practically chaste) but the cutest. Of all the ones on this list is dithered a bit over this one, oh it's great but it is a bit slapstic and camp and I wouldn't necessarily call the relationships grown up. A couple of the characters are pretty immature. Full review here. 

8. A Tale of Thousand Stars 

Thailand, YT 

With great casting and cinematography this drama nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them (and itself) with a strong mature story concept about a spoiled rich kid who gets a heart transplant and becomes a teacher it order to pay out survivor’s guilt. On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers. 

9. Wish You: Your Melody in My Heart (movie) 

Korea, Netflix

Set in the music industry featuring a talented singer and the pianist who falls in love with him (and his music), subtle and achingly adorable. 

10. Oh! Boarding House 

Korea, Viki 

Spoiled rich kid in financial straights has to manage a boarding house full of quirky characters including: bratty cousin, wacko writer, adorable bestie with a crush, and the new hot jock (love interest). All in all, this show ended up being A LOT better than I expected. It was uneven in its attempt to reconcile early sitcom style with a serious love triangle and genuine romance but the quality of the performances and the kind and honest treatment of the characters make it definitely worth watching (you just need to get through the first few eps while it finds its legs). Full review here.

Mark and Ouwen have got to be one of my all time favorite side couples. LIS? is a noona romance with added mature het couple as well as these two, mostly interwoven. So that's a big buy in for just side BL, but this is Taiwan so everything is a touch quirky and the BL boys are beautiful, earnest, and high heat. They rep for one of Taiwan's favorite dynamics: the bisexual himbo + the confident gay, but these two are just LOVELY, plus tiny queer family! 

Word of Honor - Chinese bromance Viki & YouTube 

I don’t rec Chinese stuff often, because I believe in censoring the censors, but this show is one of my favorite of the post 2016 censored bromances. It’s two murderY assassins, and they are so effing gay for two boys who will never be allowed to kiss. 

What Zabb Man! - Thailand, YouTube 

WZM was better than we have any right to expect with decent pacing and a foodie theme threaded through the narrative as both love language and plot driver. Basically CEO falls in love with a street vendor’s food, recruits him to work in his hotel, falls in love with him, and that’s the beginning. Class struggles! Kitchen drama! Papaya pounding (not a euphemism)! Chef poaching (not literally)! Spicy scenes (yes literally)! It’s all so delicious. Full review here.

One of my favorite of Korean queer house Strongberry’s shorts, one character is kinda in college (but it’s not important). It’s worth every second of your time.

this is always a hard one so I'm gonna do one per country. Japan - At this moment, Kieta Hatsukoi. I've been rewatching it and I just adore them all. Aoki is chaos made perfect and Aida is just such a good human. Korea - Light On Me. It's perfect. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. it's a love triangle made well. Philipines - Gaya Sa Pelikula. Vlad is a great character, and I wanted to hug him several times during the show. Karl is at times hard to watch, because the boy is going through it, but that dance scene is sublime. Taiwan - hummm... I'm gonna go with We Best Love 1. This is one of my favourite couples as well. I love them and I love this show. Thailand - This one I'll choose purely on my gut when I first thought of the question. ATOTS. I adore Mix. His eyes just give me so much, it's a pleasure to watch him. And the whole environment of this show just feels like a warm blanket.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LIZ ok i KNOW you haven't seen bad buddy 😭 but i haven't moved on from the rooftop scene ep5 4/4!!! the fight "mani di" leading up *the* kiss and then pran leaving pat there?????? died dead rip me 🙏 idk what p'aof puts in this closing scenes of each episode but special mention to the guitar-corridor scene at the end of ep3, the sleepover at the end of ep4, the bet by the boat of ep6, THE "YOUR FACE HAS TAKEN OVER MY HEART" for the audition at the end of ep7, the ep10 rooftop scene and obviously "pran it's not a porno". i am so not normal about this show!!!!

another all time favourite is the scene in gaya sa pelikula where Karl & Vlad have their first kiss with Ben&Ben playing and then they talk about their queerness and childhood and parents and hopes and dreams. contrary to popular opinion but i loved the ending of the show so much! both karl and vlad had so much growing up to do and it was really right person wrong time with them

then of course there is every scene with li ming (& heart) in moonlight chicken but especially the scene in which li ming shares a beer with jim after the funeral and they wholeheartedly and candidly for the first time in the show!!!

AND my most beloved scene in triage when Tinn & Tol kiss for the first time in the loop where ~spoilers~ they kill tinn 🤡 there's so much softness in that scene especially the conversation they were having before i cried while watching it

I finally had the time to devote myself to a series again and watch it in one go. I became curious through several TikToks and the very first episode swept me away. It was absolutely my humour, no slapstick, but just good entertainment. What a wonderful series.

The series is a bit like an onion. The more episodes you watch, the more layers you peel away and underneath the seemingly humorous and light entertainment, you suddenly find a collection of more difficult, important issues perfectly embedded in the context.

It's about a first love, about grieving a past love, about discovering who you actually are, about coming out, about what makes a good ally and about self-love and so much more I can't list it all.

Gaya Sa Pelikula has enchanted me with the ease of telling a complex story with a simplicity that doesn't make it boring, that doesn't need to add unnecessary drama to be interesting, and that has created characters you understand, in all their ways, but who also understand and forgive each other and themselves.

The lines that moved me the most:

Karl: "Can we just stay here forever?" Vlad: "I want to take you everywhere."

The ending is understandable, logical and perfect in my eyes. Would I wish for a second season? Yep, but I'm also satisfied with just being able to imagine the further story of the two of them myself. In any case, a clear recommendation from my side!

Following up, I can only recommend Dear Karl, the film Vlad put together for Karl to watch at the end of episode 7.

No, they weren't unfortunately. In fact, the Gameboys kiss ws the first and only Filipino drama that's been submitted for any of the brackets so far.

Charlie - Heartstopper

I like charlie because he's so strong and confident but also insecure. He knows he's gay and he's mostly comfortable with that. He's also mentally ill and doesnt want to bother people or be seen as someone who needs to be taken care of. He's insecure about a lot of things but he also stands up for himself when Harry tries to apologize for his behavior. Charlie knows he doesnt have to forgive Harry for everything he's done. I love him, he's trying his best together with Nick.

Ida - Kieta Hatsukoi / My Love Mix-Up!

Ida is demi! I will take every opportunity to shout that because that's seriously my headcanon for him. I love that Ida was so serious and respectful when Aoki confessed to him. Ida probably never considered dating a guy (or even a girl probably) but he knows it's a big deal and he doesn't want to just ignore ignore the fact that it's possible that he likes a guy. Like he's being so open minded about this because he doesn't know yet what his preference is so he's going to think about if he can like a guy back for the first time here. I just love how considerate Ida is towards Aoki.

Karl - Gaya Sa Pelikula / Like In The Movies

I love Karl because he's trying so hard. He doesn't want to disappoint his parents and he is really struggling with coming to terms with his sexuality. Karl feels so real, I love that moment where he kisses Vlad and finds out his Uncle saw that and freaks the fuck out. He wasn't ready for that. He was comfortable in their own little bubble and he's not ready to come out of that yet. And that's fair! That's valid! And little shoutout to Vlad; I love that Vlad respects that too while not wanting that for himself.

Longtae - A Tale Of A Thousand Stars

I love Longtae because he was the only one in that village that tried to ask Tian to really explain everything. When he heard the whole story he told Tian that it's not his fault. He was on Tian's side like no one else was. He made Tian feel a little less lonely and like he had a real friend there when everyone else started to hate him.

Woo Young Woo - Extraordinary Attorney Woo

Do I even need to explain why I love my favorite whale obsessed attorney? It doesn't matter that she's my only whale obsessed attorney. I love her and her weird and random whale talks. I love that she's very aware of her autism and that she knows how people view her and that she doesn't get social things sometimes. She's always so hard-working even in the romance department because once she thinks that she likes Junho she does everything she can to figure out if she really likes him in her own unique way and it's just really sweet to watch.

Mafuyu - Given

"I'm not lonely" is the first line in the anime and it's the line I think about most often when I think about this show. I love the anime and manga more than the live action so mostly talking about those. Mafuyu is such a sad puppy in the beginning. He says he doesn't know how to express himself which I find very relatable. He closed himself off from his old friends and takes Yuuki('s guitar) with him wherever he goes. However once he meets Uenoyama he starts to open up more. The manga recently ended and I have read it all. I liked how Mafuyu and Ugetsu formed this unexpected friendship. Mafuyu really grew even though he's still the same quiet kid. He's quiet but feels so much and he loves so much and he is s grieving boy who found someone new without properly getting over Yuuki. And of course he never will completely get over Yuuki. He will move on and live his life but Yuuki will always have a place in his heart and Uenoyama knows that.

Oh Aew - I Told Sunset About You & I Promised You The Moon

I love Oh Aew because he's so real for wanting to pursue something he loves while also having a back up plan for if it doesn't work out. I love that he's insecure about his future and in the end doesn't know exactly what he wants. Teh has always knows he wants to do acting and he's talented and he can do it but Oh Aew has never been that confident about it. Oh Aew thinks more rationally about his choices and his future. I love Oh in IPYTM too and how he loves himself enough to make the choices he makes. That's vague enough to say what I wanted to say without spoiling IPYTM lol

Shin Daon - Light On Me

I love him. I thought this would be a tough choice between Taekyung and Noh Shinwoo but it really isn't. Daon already has parents who don't care about him and who are never home. He's already a huge people pleaser and can't say no even to the point of hurting himself. But now he's starting to like a boy, Taekyung, and that's all fun until he gets outed by his friend. Now the whole school knows he's gay and he's not dealing with that very well. Then on top of that Noh Shinwoo tells him he likes Taekyung and that means he has competition. But how can he fight for Taekyung if he hasn't even accepted that he's gay yet? How can he talk to Taekyung without worrying what people are saying about him? So much happened in such a short amount of time and he had to deal with it all so he just didn't have the brain power to also have a romance that no one accepts. So that's why I love him. He went through a lot but he dealt with it and grew more comfortable with himself and and more honest and he's saying no to people when he really has something important.

Justin - The Day I Loved You

Justin is the most recent character from The Day I loved You which hasn't even finished yet. I do love him because he's Nikko's best friend and they've been together for a very long time. Justin loves Nikko but Nikko doesn't love him and Justin knows this and yet he tries. He wants Nikko to be happy even if it's not with him. But I'm sure that if Eli ever hurts Nikko Justin will make him regret it. Justin wants to protect Nikko and just spend time with him, he gets worried when Nikko fell at school. And Justin got hurt when he saw Eli and Nikko have fun together and later kissing each other but he didn't interrupt them.

Austen - Always Human

Austen is from the webtoon Always Human. It's a cute GL about a fantasy world where there are special mods that can help with anything. You can use it to study, to get rid of hay fevers or to change your body however you want with the ability to undo it. You could do something innocent like dye your hair a wild color or you could get cat ears or have blue skin color and no one thinks you're crazy. I love Austen because she has a condition which makes her unable to use those mods so she can't use the hay fever mod or change her skin color or get cat ears. This means she had to learn to accept that she will be different from other people. She also has to work way harder than other people because everyone else has an advantage in learning new things because of mods that can help with studying. She's a very stubborn girl and has always wanted to work towards almost impossible to achieve goals because she refuses to accept that some things may be too hard for her if she can't use mods. I love that she's so passionate about not giving up but I also love that when she does change her mind it's not because she's giving up, it's because she wants to change. Sometimes a change can feel like you're giving up but that's not always true. A few days ago I reread the end of this story and I relate to Austen way more now than when I first read it. I also took this opportunity to advertise Always Human because I love this comic so much.
