The “why do they like the Jesus statue, but not me, even though we’re both made of wood” scene in GDT’s Pinocchio is great because on the one hand, excellent criticism of the hypocrisy often running rampant in religious communities, but on the other hand, well, you see, Pinocchio, that one doesn’t move and talk.

love love love that Pinocchio told Candlewick that he was sure Candlewicks dad loved him and just says hurtful things because he himself is hurting. And then like the next day when his dad shows that this is absolutely not the case and he’s just a horrible abusive fascist, both Pinocchio and Candlewick tell him to go fuck himself and neither of them care when he gets blown the fuck up. beautiful

thank you mister del toro for once again sticking to "the inhuman/monstrous/othered character keeps their appearance all the way through the film" bit. big fan of that

“You did bring me joy. Such terrible, terrible joy” is the line in Pinocchio that made me cry because that’s literally it. that’s what grief is. the joy is why it hurts so bad. and it doesn’t make it not worth it but it still hurts.

not to get too deep but when pinocchio lied to get them out of the whale it really felt like a metaphor for lying to save your life when trapped in a fascist country. his lies built them a bridge out

Pinocchio 🤝 Ofelia
Innocent children of ambiguous mortality who long to connect with their parent and are defying the cruel status quo of a war torn world which they leave a breath of hope in regardless of their eventual fate being unclear

GDT's pinocchio is a delight and full of so many fantastic little details, but my current favorite is that, as an ostensible family film, the contractually mandated 'it's GDT so someone has to have a violence done to their face' moment takes the shape of a bad guy getting shot in the eye by a paintball

Headcanon: The opening part of Pinocchio where Sebastian is telling the story of Gepetto and Carlo was actually Sebastian writing down what Gepetto dictated to him about his life with Carlo so Sebastian could start his book about Pinocchio.

Tried to get my mom interested in watching GDTs Pinocchio (she refuses bc she thinks its “creepy”) and when I tried to explain the plot to it and what happens in the movie all I got out of the deal was “maybe you should lay off of that sort of thing” and it’s taken me a full day to figure out why that fucking bothered me so much
Like these ppl watch movies and shows that have high levels of gore, violence, murder and whatnot without even batting an eye but heaven forbid they come face to face with a literal childrens movie whose main themes involve (among other things) life and the inevitability of death and how each of us should cherish that singular life that we have been given and to to do good whenever we can despite the pressures around us and to enjoy the things that life has to offer, but nooooooo suddenly that’s “too much?”
I AM CONFUSION???
.
.
.
((Bonus: I found out the reason why she never let me finish the Golden Compass:
Me: why did you never let me read that crap?
Her: oh It was because they kill God in it. *this was said in a hushed whisper btw as though my delicate constitution would suddenly crumble away from the mere thought.*
Me:*stares blankly in JRPGS* mom…mom that ship sailed when I was like…ten…I literally haven’t stopped since!
(She was legit shocked when I started telling her about the God of War series lmao) ))

Pinocchio spoilers:
love GDT chose not to have the "pinocchio turns into flesh and blood" ending, he's areal boy cuz he chose to have 1 life and he chose to use it to be good also this is part of why im not a big source material is god guy, like if we stuck to that would we ever see a pinocchio story that melds death and immortality into its story lmao

I have the weirdest conspiracy theory, that Disney hates Guillermo Del Toro and is trying specifically to sabotage all his movies in recent years for some reason. It is absolutely based on nothing but crazy ideas in my head, very tinfoil hat stuff, so don't take this too seriously lol.
I got this theory originally when, on Dec 2021, Disney scheduled Nightmare Alley (that they acquired along with the 21th century fox purchase) to be released on the same weekend as their most hyped up marvel movie of that year Spider-Man: Something Something. Now, no one remembers this but the movie was set to be released on November, it was only when Disney got their grubby hands on it that they decided to delay the release date to that exact same date. Naturally Spider-Man ate the entire box office that weekend and Nightmare Alley didn't make even half of it's production costs back after all.
Now, I'm not saying that this was the ONLY reason Nightmare Alley was unprofitable, just that it definitely didn't help. And at that point in time there was a lot of talk of Disney trying to dump every movie that was completed under Fox into the nearest toilet they could find to move on with their own productions. So I brushed it off. UNTIL
Until this year, the year in which we got 4 different Pinocchio films, one of which came from Disney and one from GDT. Now, it is well known that GDT had been working on this movie for a long time, so it's not hard to imagine that some information on it had been leaked at some point.
And I'm saying all of this because it feels super fucking weird that Disney rushed production on their own Pinocchio and there are some WEIRD changes that they made to their story that are not present on the original book OR the original Disney Pinocchio, but that ARE present in GDT's movie.
Spoilers for both: Geppetto had a son that died, and he built Pinocchio in his sorrow for his loss; Geppetto almost dies after they escape the giant fish and Pinocchio saving his life is what grants him real boy status; despite his real boy status Pinocchio is never shown as a flesh and blood boy.
With all of this I had this dumb theory that someone on Disney got their hands on some information about GDT's Pinocchio and decided to pull an AntZ on him, using the information they had to make their own "live action remake" to be released before his movie in order to suck all the demand for a new Pinocchio before his move was released.
I know it's a dumb theory that makes no sense, but WHY DID DISNEY HAVE THOSE VERY SPECIFIC PLOT POINTS IN THEIR MOVIE???? That is so so so weird
