Year Long Cruise

Contest to win a year long stay on a cruise ship, all inclusive. That means unlimited access to all the ship’s amenities including the 24 hour buffet.

Ash, is the winner of this contest. As a young person who struggles to pay the bills, a year of guaranteed housing sounds great. On top of that, Ash recently switched jobs and can work remotely.

When Ash gets onboard they are overwhelmed. There is a huge party celebrating their winning of the contest. A multi course meal that doesn’t seem to end is served to them, along with alcohol. By the end of the night they are paying less attention to the other guests than they are on the delicious food.

“You might want to pace yourself.” A server said with a warm smile. “You have a whole year to try all of these, you might even be able to request something from the chef.”

Ash was blown away by the quality of all the meals on the ship. The portions of plated meals were huge, plus there was the buffet. Ash frequently got pancakes and waffles for breakfast, stacking them high on their plate.

Being on a cruise ship means they don’t have to go very far to get things, and often times they can order room service. Ash is thankful to not be run off their feet for once and fully intends to take daytime naps that they never had time for before.

However, they often don’t end up napping. Instead, they are snacking on food, or drinking pop and milkshakes. There always seems to be a reason to order a snack or drink. A cup of gelato while they stroll along the upper deck. A portion of fries while working on a work project.

Barely two weeks into their year long stay, Ash’s clothes begin to dig into their skin, mainly around their waist and ass. But the staff of the ship are gracious and inform Ash that yes, even clothes from the shops on board are included in their prize package. They assume that they might have just been a bit too excited about winning and overindulged just a bit. Soon, they were sure they’d calm down and they wouldn’t have to size up their clothes again.

Two months into their stay on board and it is clear that Ash is gaining weight. Parts of their body are jiggling in ways they never used to, their arms, their thighs, their ass, but most of all their gut. At first Ash is stressed about this, but then they began to relax and explore their body. Maybe they liked their body more this way, now that there was more of it.

Four months in and Ash is creeping in on the 225lbs mark, and happily so. They have become a fixture at the ship’s buffets, dressing up and stuffing themself full of food, slowly. They can see some other guests of the ship watching them intently. Sometimes Ash gives them a nod or a wink and the observer blushes, much to Ash’s delight.

Six months in and Ash is doing their best to get to and pass 250lbs. Their arms, thighs, ass and belly are decorated with stretch marks. They find themself absentmindedly gripping their belly fat throughout the day.

Eight months pass and Ash is at 280lbs. Their gut has folded over on itself, and they take great pleasure from running their fingers between their belly folds. The chefs of the ship are now all well aware of their culinary preferences, and a table very close to the buffet is always reserved for them. Ash has attained a small ring of fans who are part of the crew who support and sometimes feed Ash.

Ten months pass, and it is Ash’s birthday! There is a grand party thrown with loads of food. Because there were so many different specialties that Ash wanted to eat, the celebrations were spread out over the course of a week. The Ash groupies shower them with delicacies and pampering. Ash weighs in at 301lbs, and the celebrations are reinvigorated as a weight milestone party as well.

Eleven months in and Ash is enjoying another day at the spa. They are bathed by a team, washing their flabby arms, lifting their belly fold to wash in between. Their most recent weigh in even surprised them as they clocked in at an impressive 324lbs. However their mind was already starting to worry about the end of their stay aboard the ship.

Twelve months pass and Ash needs to pack up and go. All of their old clothes are long gone, sent to the lost and found bin. Their friends and family are waiting for them, and the Ash groupies say their goodbyes, each getting in one last squeeze.

Ash waddles off the departure ramp and head through the terminal. They see their friends and family all standing in a group. They keep getting closer and closer, but no one seems to recognize them. They say hello, and still no one recognizes them. It isn’t until they introduce themself that eyes widen and mouths gape.

Ash was 335lbs of happy, and soon, most of their friends and family came to see that and accepted Ash back into their lives wholeheartedly.

This is written about a person named Ash, you can view them as male, female, whatever you wish, that’s why I chose a neutral name and use “they.”

!!! Song of the Summer !!! On a Journey by Theresa Ambat (I’m in love with the vocals, I’m in love with the instrumentation, I’m in love with the production, I’m in love with the themes and lyrics, and that Night Vale episode’s weather (222 (which is my birthday which is kinda wild)) was so unbelievably timely for this mental space that I’m in right now (bonus: You Sure Are Something by Theresa Ambat has also been a favorite these past couple of weeks, got me kickin my legs like a romantic fr))

Rules for a good gelato place (as I learned from the best):

must not be piled high like a mountain in the tin!!!  that means there’s air in it.  the person must scoop downward into the gelato tin where the gelato is level or below the rim

several flavors available!!!  this probably means they know their stuff and aren’t just some random sweets place that decided one day to sell four or five flavors of gelato to attract a few more customers

non dairy in the fruit flavors!!!  fruit flavors should have no milk, just ask if they do and walk out if the person behind the counter admits to the crime

mostly muted colors!!! pistachio should be greenish-brown, not bright green.  brighter colors means they’ve likely added coloring artificially (though some of the fruit flavors like berry and mango tend to be brighter)

You know, I’ve never really put thought into decorating a room before.  Like, in both my childhood homes, I had purple walls but nothing hung on them.  I mean I have a dresser-vanity and some whiteboards, and I used to have a fishtank and for a short time some butterflies pasted around the place, but literally no decor of my own choosing.  When I moved into my dorm freshman year, I got some canvas prints from amazon and went with a gray/mint theme, and it was cute and pretty and looked like a lot of the other dorm pictures I’d seen online, but it wasn’t really me, if you know what I mean.  I remember a few months (a year?) into living in my apartment when I put up my red starfleet academy banner and stared at it for an hour in awe of how amazing it made me feel.  It remained my only piece of decoration for the entirety of the time I lived there.  I don’t want live like that in my next place, but I do want to expound on that energy.  

I have ~ideas~ both for common and personal spaces.  In common spaces, I know I want to have a fake bouquet on the table.  Maybe switching them out occasionally.  In my room, I think I want to go for a very specific theme: “starfleet ensign whose ship crashed on a presently uninhabited class-m planet several years prior and whose crew has been living off the land and uncovering the buried civilization that existed there eons before they were marooned” or “Explorer Vibes plus my star trek banner lol”.  I just.. Rachel Maksy said in a video once that she likes to tell stories with her outfits, and I sort of want to try that with my room.  I really love the “mosscore” and academic looks, with scientific drawings on aged paper, maps, vines and wisteria, knicknacks.. but I kind of want to make it my own, where if someone were to look closely they’d see all the treky things and it’d just be a little whimsical, like me.  I just want to make my room into a space that I love.

Oh my god wait it’s space academia is what it is.

Anyway I’ve started filling up a new pinterest board and while it’s a bit of a mess I’m kind of in love with it.  Now, as I’ve been going through this thought exercise, I get this pervasive thought about how there’s no permanent sense of self and for that reason it’s foolish to try to chase the whims of my own style which may change with the next passing fad.  But.  I look back on the years when I was obsessed with my galaxy jeans, and I’m happy for that Nina, even if she’s not me anymore.  And I think maintaining that outlook is better than expecting to shame my current self in the future for doing something that’s with or against the grain.  So as someone with not much money, I think I’m going to look into getting furniture pieces that are stylistically modular, at first, which I could add a covering to (or make a covering for?  hm..) to match my most recent whim.  Like getting a black saucer chair but crocheting a green granny square blanket to cover it, like otherworldly moss (to fit in with the ~bedroom story~).

So last thing, I’ve been on a bit of a mild movie binge these past few days.  Shazam 1 and 2 were alright, nothing too terribly innovative for the genre, but I really did love the diversity all around.  Airplane 1 and 2 were literally hilarious.  I don’t know what kind of genre it is exactly, but they made me laugh and giggle aloud so many times, I mean the wordplay and physical humor were golden.  Superman: Red Son was an unexpectedly good WB DC Animated Movie.  It interesting all the way through, Travis Willingham made an appearance, the animation style/character design was good... honestly it had the intrigue and impactful climax I was looking for but found lacking in the Injustice: Gods Among Us movie.  Now, I fully recognize that there was a pretty pro-American lean to it disguised under those pro-communism plot points, but I’ll let it slide.

Today I’m thankful for graduation gifts.

1. Song of the year?

Måneskin - Honey! (Are U Coming?), although Fifteen's theme from Doctor Who has grasped me over the last few days. More music-specific stuff here!

2. Album of the year?

Strictly speaking the only full album I heard was Måneskin - Rush, and that had… some issues even though I love most of it, haha.

3. Favourite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?

Can we count the BG3 soundtrack as a new artist?

4. Movie of the year?

I rewatched Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory last night and that was... it, so that, I guess!

5. TV show of the year?

I still haven't recovered from Good Omens season 2.

6. Episode of TV or webisode that defined the year for you?

Episode 2.06 of Good Omens, Doctor Who - all four specials.

7. Favourite actor of the year?

Honestly it's gotta be David Tennant. Like, between Good Omens and Doctor Who? Yeah. Neil Newbon comes in a very close second, though!

8. Game of the year?

It's a. It's actually a tie which is goddamn unheard of in a Zelda release year, but Baldur's Gate 3 genuinely nearly kicked Tears of the Kingdom aside??

9. Best month for you this year?

Oh man tricky. Do I say October because I went on my first actual proper holiday in eight and a half years? November for the Maneskin concert? Or do they lose points because I had COVID in late Oct/early Nov? Let's skip both and go with June (Vivid down in Sydney and the single greatest sorbet I've ever tried, a super fun VtM tabletop session, and got Operation YEETerus more or less confirmed)!

10. Something that made you cry this year?

Cried pretty much the whole way through the end of Tears of the Kingdom, does that count?

11. Something you want to do again next year?

Ooh I'd love to go back down to Sydney for Vivid!

12. Talk about a new friend you made this year

Shrug emoji. You're all cool.

13. How was your birthday this year?

Super chill. Ordered pizza and ate ice cream, and a few days earlier when my brother came up, we went to one of our favourite Lebanese restaurants.

15. What's a bad habit you picked up this year?

Not sure I picked any up? Still haven't ditched the finger-chewing, alas.

A haul from Sydney in January. Hell Followed With Us and Legends and Lattes were bought new, as were most of the CDs. The other three books and the Sigur Ros CD were second-hand.

17. Post a picture from the end of the year

Okay so on the cruise (late October, I'm gonna say it counts) each floor on the stairwell nearest our cabin had these like, sailing/ships/cruising-type collages, right? Golden Age of Sail, 50s cruising, all that stuff. Which is fine! Great! Except one of them was this!

For the love of god, why would you think an image of the Titanic sinking would be appropriate for a cruise ship?!

18. A memorable meal this year?

The hazelnut sorbet of the gods. Listen. Sydneysiders, listen, if Rivareno Gelato is doing the hazelnut that week you have to try it.

19. What're you excited about for next year?

Australian Literature Festival at Sea! Not until December, but it should be fun as hell!

20. What's something you learned this year?

I did a course on how to make an author site! I should. Do that.

21. What's something new about your place of residence (room, home, or general location) now vs the start of the year?

We started fixing up the old, kinda leaking upstairs bathroom! Gonna be moving back upstairs once it's done!

22. Favourite place you visited this year?

Eden in southern NSW, and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Hobart <3 Both on the cruise. Eden was absolutely gorgeous and Bonorong had critters.

23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?

Probably the two main ones are my first two BG3 characters? A custom Tav, Ta'varin 'Tae' Arkenval, and my beloved Durge baby, Tavias. I'm probably most attached to Tavias, he is going through The Horrors while being the pureblooded child of the God of Murder and also just trying to be a nice person. Wish him luck as I enter act 3!

Home late - thanks to Ciaran

We’re back home again after 67 days away - 24 hours later than intended after getting caught up in Storm Ciaran.

The storm hit Northern France hard and so we had to slightly change our plans. With Ciaran heading straight for us, we drove further than we intended on the penultimate day, to stay as close to the Channel Tunnel as possible for our last night. Then battered by strong winds and torrential rain, we crossed back into the U.K. and headed straight for a night at the Drum Inn pub in Ashford where we began our journey two months earlier, to let the storm pass.

Our last few days in France had been at a little village in Normandy - Les Andelys - on the banks of the River Seine and just 60 miles from Paris. The village was charming and a favourite stop for river cruise ships making their way through France. Having camped close to the shipping lane in Venice, we now found ourselves staying close to the shipping lane for river cruises in Les Andelys.

There were dozens of Americans spending their dollars here and the shops were geared up to catch these tourists. We prefer the natural and historic wonders, however, rather than those found on the High Street, so we headed for the ruin of the Chateau Gaillard that stands above the village. Building of the chateau began in 1196 under the auspices of Richard the Lionheart, who was simultaneously King of England and feudal Duke of Normandy.

The castle is listed as an historic monument and most of it is now in ruins but the inner Bailey is open to the public. You guessed it - we climbed up to the chateau and discovered it was the only day in the week when it was closed! We were able to explore the ruins, however, and enjoy the fabulous views across the river and surrounding countryside. It was well worth the climb.

Our drive through the Normandy towns and villages on our journey home- deliberately avoiding the sterile motorways - was so interesting with the trees showing off their stunning autumn colours. This has definitely been the most amazing trip.

We have driven almost 3,000 miles across Belgium and Luxembourg into Switzerland, Northern Italy and Southern and Northern France.

We have visited nine cities and numerous towns and villages and three spectacular lakes.

We have marvelled at eight Cathedrals, numerous parish churches, chateaux, ancient bridges and historic buildings.

We have visited bears, watched flamingoes in flight, seen herons go fishing and dodged a snake in the lake.

We have travelled miles on public transport - bus, train, ferry, boat and tram - and our bikes.

We have walked more than 450,000 steps.

We have eaten far too much gelato and too many cakes and drank too much wine and our fair share of cocktails.

But most importantly, we have visited Northern Italy which we have been wanting to do for years and spent time back in one of our favourite regions, the South of France.

We have met so many new people and helped a lovely French couple find their way to their friends’ house before being invited to spend the afternoon with them, even though they didn’t speak a word of English. Absolutely priceless.

And along the way, we have learnt some Italian and embarrassed ourselves enough in French that our grasp of the language must have improved - surely?

Now it’s time to give Big Boy a well deserved rest until our next great adventure.

Entering a research contest with her friend, Olivia was flabbergasted when her parents sprung a last-minute cruise on her. Finding herself on what is essentially a floating city, The Regal Island SS NY Sea, is a seven-day cruise around the tropics, to give the family a long-needed vacation. This cruise is special due to its children zone which provides personal aid for Olivia’s younger twin brothers who are on the autism spectrum. Even though Olivia is probably more qualified, given the amount of research she has done for them. After losing her older brother days before her eleventh birthday from a heart attack, Olivia has become a doomsday bomb, always looking at the worst-case scenarios for the twins, and herself. Thus, why do her parents think she needs a cruise, even inviting her childhood friend, Jules along with her family - thinking this will be good for Olivia. Jules is not like Olivia expected, into drugs and always has a flask on her, Jules insists they find themselves a crew to hang out with for the week. Meeting the boys, Olivia was instantly drawn to Sebastian. A fellow music lover, Sebastian was a dreamboat of a guy, interested in Olivia for her brain, and allowed her to talk about Logan, the brother her parents seem to have forgotten. Sebastian challenged Olivia to take the risk and live in the moment, something Logan would have also wished for her to do. With a cruise expedition to a shipwreck site off of Antigua, a country Logan promised to take her to one day, Olivia realizes there's more than this ship can offer besides cheesy NYC stuff and expensive expeditions. It offers the opportunity for love, to live in the moment, to connect to her past, and experience heartbreak for the first time.

Thoughts:

Lauren Kay starts their writing career with this banger of a YA novel. Taken from the first-person perspective of Olivia, we get a courageous smarty-pants, who despite always thinking of the worst outcomes, is trying to give life a change. Within this story, we kind of get two Olivias; Olivia who is dealing with the emotions of her family life, and trying to ensure that she does not forget Logan, despite feeling like her family has. Using her future in a way to save him, as her reason for becoming a doctor is to figure out what killed Logan at such a young age. This family dynamic and family history made the story emotionally interesting, although I wish Kay gave us more Logan stories throughout the novel. It seems as if Olivia only reflected on him a bit throughout the novel, where more history about their relationship could have made it more emotionally devastating, as Kay kind of breezed through the depression that Olivia probably went through for years after Logan’s death. Plus the issue of feeling like her parents replace Logan with the twins? So much more emotion could have come out of that. Now the second Olivia (aka Liv) is our love-at-first-sight, romantic girl, who after three days on the cruise with Sebastian, was calculating how they could make a long-distance relationship work. My girl, Olivia, come on! You hardly know the guy, a statement Jules thankfully said throughout the novel. In a cringy way, we got to see Olivia fall hard for a guy she barely knows, and despite his winning personality, he made her open up while keeping himself closed. The love bomb was real, but so was Olivia not being able to read signs, and where it was entertaining to read, you honestly just felt bad for our naive girl for falling hard for a player. With these two Olivia storylines running parallel, it made the book an easy read, and where I do not dock Kay for these typical plot points, I just wish she dove more into the emotional side of the family more, and a little bit less on the perfection Sebastian in Olivia’s eyes.

There was a fire in the park yesterday. Videos were shared on the street WhatsApp: the upwards creep of the fire into the bushes, the sound of the breeze fanning the flames and the crackle of the dry grass as it went up in smoke. The Fire Brigade were called. This is the second local fire we’ve had in two weeks and the third so far this summer. 

There’s anger about the length of the grass – disagreements as to whether it should ever have been left to grow so tall. Everyone is probably right. The wildlife needs the grass and so does the fire. Humans are undoubtedly the problem.

Monday: The most astonishing cave. It felt big enough to hold a cathedral. Magic in the scale of it – in scaling it. The long walk down: “this is where the waterfall would’ve been”. You could imagine it all. Stalagmites, either rounded at the top or flat like a stack of pancakes, depending on the speed and distance of the drip that feeds them. And in the centre, two impossibly tall, geodetic pendulums, measuring changes in the earth’s crust. 

On the way home, the Temple of Monte Grisa. A huge ugly slab of a building that overlooks Trieste. It’s all sharp angles and concrete. S and I both love it. Everyone S knows in Trieste hates it. 

Tuesday: a boat to Muggia for gelato, just for the joy of taking the boat.

Wednesday: catch the bus to Miramare, built for Ferdinand Maximilian Josef Maria von Habsburg-Lothringen. I think I’ve finally got my Archdukes in order, although the thought of Maxilmilian becoming Emperor of Mexico never ceases to be absurd. 

The building is less a castle and more crenellated manor. The first rooms inside have low ceilings and wood panelling, designed to reproduce the war-ship Maximilian used when he was Commander of the Navy. It’s a two-roomed, in-home theme park, perfectly put together. But there is a sadness about the whole place. It seeps into you. Maximilian was executed in Mexico, embalmed and returned to Trieste in a coffin, before being taken to Vienna.

Thursday: Travel home, wearing a mask. Mainly because it seems sensible and responsible. And it’s really easy.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 

Friday: Faff. Faff. Bake vegan cookies for a friend. This recipe is a good un. Although the cookies are pretty intense. You know what is a good trick though? Pressing in either chocolate chips or pieces when you take the cookies out of the oven. They hold their shape and for some reason it makes the cookies look more pro. 

Saturday: deliver vegan cookies. Forget to bring back the tin. It's lucky I've known her since we were 12. I think I can trust her?
