Inspired to Expand the Definition of Where one Lives

This hot and lethargic afternoon I went on a YouTube video watching binge, and was particularly inspired by the video above, by @futurebird from a while back. The video essay goes that instead of viewing "where you live" as just your house, to appreciate your whole territory of where you regularly habituate, whether it be stores or work or commute. The video challenges us to think about how we impact the areas in which we frequent.

I was curious, and I had checked my own Google maps timeline of all the places I have been in the last ten years:

Then I Zoomed in to the region of the world in which I most often habituate:

Further, I have mostly spent my time between three areas. The one I am visiting now, where my mom lives:

I have lived in this area off and on since I was 15. I have lived in multiple cities in this area. And continue to have my life intertwined between them regardless of which city I am in.

Then the area where my dad lives:

This doesn't count the years I grew up here from one year old to 8. Or the weekend visits to my dad's thereafter. This is just in the years since I was 18 or 19 and had my own smartphone (and by extension, Google to track me). It's enlightening to see how much my footprints spread between the entire metro area, as south as Tualatin, as west as Banks, as east as Gresham, and as north to across the river into another state, in Vancouver.

Then in the last year or so, after I started going to college:

Compared to the other two regions, it is still a little sparse (then again, it isn't to scale to the other two, because I zoomed into a smaller region). It's still wide reaching in its own respects. Just from one end of the dots to the other used to be my commute to work.

In the modern world, our digital and global reach is even wider. Without having to physically move yourself, you can move and impact places and people you have never met, and likely never will. If there was a map of the places one person had touched or consumed goods from, or people they have directly or indirectly interacted with, the map would be much larger and interconnected.
