Strawberry Hill House
Horace Walpole, youngest son of Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, took out a lease on Chopp’d Straw Hall in Twickenham in 1747. The following year, he purchased the small 17th-Century house, renamed it to Strawberry Hill, and set about turning the property into a suitable country seat. Taking inspiration from medieval Gothic cathedrals, Walpole added towers, spires, battlements and stained-glass windows as he pleased, gradually expanded the house such that, by the time of his death in 1797, it had doubled in size.
Tumblr media
Strawberry Hill’s unique appearance was not limited to its exterior. Inside, Walpole sought to create an atmosphere of “gloomth”, with dimly-lit rooms housing his vast collection of antiquities and curiosities. Despite the low lighting, these rooms were extravagantly decorated, being painted in vibrant colours, covered with intricately patterned wallpapers, or adorned with gothic carvings. Amongst these, Walpole crafted a somewhat spurious family history, using artworks to link his lineage to crusaders and Tudor nobles.
Tumblr media
Even in Walpole’s own time, visitors were drawn to the house and its gardens, such that its owner would often rely on a housekeeper and a self-written guidebook to provide tours to the public. Strawberry Hill would also become the inspiration for the first Gothic horror novel, The Castle of Otranto, said to have been written after Walpole dreamed of seeing a giant armoured fist on the highest bannister of the grand staircase.
Tumblr media
After Walpole’s death, Strawberry Hill passed through the hands of several relatives. Two successive owners in the 19th Century spent most of the family fortune, leading to the “Great Sale” of 1842, in which most of the contents of the house were sold off, such that today it seems rather barren. The following century would see the house slip into disrepair. However, extensive restoration in the early 2000s mean that the decoration looks as good as it did in the 1790s (bar a few rooms where later additions have been kept), and modern visitors can expect the many helpful room stewards to provide a wealth of information on the house and its history.

Week 1 - Gothic Revival
Video 1 of the 6 videos of the history of design talked about Gothic revival. And this made me want to talk about The Strawberry Hill house. A Gothic REVIVAL architecture style icon.
The strawberry hill house was owned by the son of a rich prime minister, named Horace Walpole. Horace was a fiend of European elegance, beauty, and Gothic buildings. The house was actually out of style at the time, and seen as a flamboyant experiment. Walpole WANTED the house to be weird and out there. He specifically went for the look he called “gloomth”  (The word gloomth also refers to morbid Victorians who treated preparing for death as an elaborate hobby). Some even speculated that because Horace died a bachelor and only enjoyed the company of older ladies that he was homosexual. In general, Horace was seen a weird guy but other artists respected his fine tastes and his ability to combine Gothic with other design elements (weird objects he collected).
Some key architectural/decorational components integral to the Gothic design of the house include:
Ancient stained glass
Grant portraiture (by Rubens and Van Dyck)
First century Roman marble
A mirror used by Elizabeth I’s necromancer
coins & prints
wood carvings
spires
high windows
pointy ceilings & arches
fancy medieval wallpapers
Cluster columns
Qua-trefoils
Gold finishing
While The Strawberry Hill house didn’t single highhandedly revive Gothic, Horace was respected for his tastes and admired by many through his home tours and parties (which he held and even made a guide book for).

Horace's guide to the Strawberry Hill house, which he introduces: “ It will look, I fear, a little like arrogance in a private man to give a printed description of his villa and collection, in which almost everything is diminutive.  It is not, however, intended for public sale, and originally was meant only to assist those who should visit the place.”
