unsurprisingly, it’s Greedfall again, but not Nadia/Kurt for once! Instead, it’s Nadia/Vasco! pre-relationship but definitely flirting, on the boat ship to Teer Fradee.

Just before sunset, one of the crewmates of the Sea Horse had brought out a fiddle, and then had been joined with concertina, pennywhistle, and drum. By full dark, more than a dozen others - Naut, Coin Guard, and Congregation alike - had answered the call of music, and now laughter and singing drifted on the gentle ocean breeze as they danced along the deck.

Nadia leaned on the railing near the helm, watching the revelry but not joining in herself. They’d been out at sea a little over a month now, and while she had started to feel a bit of kinship with the sailors and soldiers in their entourage, she didn’t feel comfortable imposing on their merriment.

She became aware of the steady thud of approaching footsteps, and turned as Captain Vasco joined her at the rail. He had eschewed his hat, most likely because the sun was down, and he looked younger without it, less formidable. He always had such an air of easy authority about him, the kind that made you want to listen when he spoke, that it was easy to forget that he was only a year or two older than she was. She found herself both envious of and intrigued by it.

He turned his head enough to catch her eye, smiling slightly as if to let her know that he’d caught her staring. “Good evening, Your Excellency.”

“Good evening, Captain.” She gestured toward the musicians. “You’re not going to join in?”

“Someone needs to make sure the ship doesn’t sink while they’re slacking off,” he said, but she could hear the fondness in his voice. He loved his crew as much as they loved him. “They like to have a little festivity sometimes on calm nights like this. Music, dancing, drinking. Keeps morale up, and as long as no one is too drunk to do their jobs, I see no reason to stop them.”

“Do you play any instruments, Captain?” Nadia asked, hoping to take the opportunity to learn a little more about him.

He shook his head. “Flavia tried to teach me the fiddle, but I didn’t take to it. Not a bad singer, though.” He looked away from the growing dance floor and turned the full force of his attention her way. “What about you?”

“I was a very mediocre piano player for three years before my teacher gave it up as hopeless.” She had tried, really she had. Madam Duret had told her she simply ‘didn’t possess the gift’ for music.

“Can you sing?”

She shrugged. “Good enough for tavern halls.”

Vasco laughed, the sound as light and lovely as the fiddle below. “That’s all that matters.”

They fell silent, and Nadia’s eyes drifted away from the dancers and up to the sky above them. It was nearly cloudless, and the lanterns on the ship and waning moon weren’t bright enough to interfere with the vast and breathtaking view. Her preferred studies had always been more earthbound, but she suddenly understood the draw of astronomy. She couldn’t imagine ever getting tired of such a sight.

“Are there always so many stars?” she whispered.

“There are.” He matched her tone, though instead of awe his voice held curiosity. “Can’t see them like this from the city, I suppose.”

“It’s beautiful.”

“Yes. Beautiful.” Something about the way he said it drew her gaze down from the sky, only to find his eyes already on her. As soon as he noticed her looking, he glanced back up at the stars. “How much do you know about them?”

She considered his admittedly handsome profile in the dim lantern light, but his face wasn’t giving away any hint of what he was thinking. After a few moments of quiet contemplation, she gave in and took the bait. “Probably not as much as you, but I’ve studied star charts before.”

Vasco nodded sagely, though she didn't miss the twitch at the corner of his lips that said he was stifling a smile. "You know, we Nauts have different names for constellations than what you’d find on those charts."

"I’ll bet you do." Nadia was fairly sure she'd heard that line before, though never with quite so much sincerity. "And what would it cost me to learn some of the Nauts’ vaunted secrets?"

She expected 'let me buy you a drink,' maybe even an offer of dinner. That was how these conversations usually went. Instead, he just leaned closer, close enough that their shoulders brushed, and murmured, "You could say please."

There was no way it was that simple. She could almost feel the trap closing around her, and yet she still found herself tempted. Surprisingly so. Maybe it had something to do with the captain's natural charisma. Maybe she simply liked having the undivided attention of a handsome sailor, for however long it lasted.

Before she could answer, a voice rang out from below.

"Captain!" It was Jonas, who had finally noticed the two of them standing in the wings. He sat on a crate holding a musical instrument Nadia had never seen before, waving one arm wildly to get their attention. "Where’s your sense of hospitality? Ask the lady for a dance!"

“Jonas, I could not agree more.” With a graceful flourishing bow, Vasco offered Nadia his hand and a playful smile. “Would you do me the honor of a dance, Your Excellency?”

“Call me Nadia.” She curtseyed and slipped her hand into his. “And I would love to.”

He led her down the stairs toward the rest of the dancers, and none of them even pretended not to be watching them approach. He spun her twice before pulling her flush against him, his movements showy enough to entertain their audience, but obviously competent. Someone wolf-whistled at them; Nadia was fairly sure it was Constantin, but didn’t look to find out.

The band struck up something vaguely resembling a waltz, fast enough to alleviate most of the awkwardness that came with dancing with an unfamiliar partner but not so fast that it wanted to turn into a jig.

Vasco was an excellent partner. His lead was confident and clear, but never pushy or demanding; he simply moved, and trusted her to follow. If this was the same way he led his ship, it was no wonder his crew was so loyal to him.

As the next song slowed down enough to give them a chance to breathe, she told him so. “Captain, you are quite the skilled dancer.”

“You can call me Vasco.” They briefly separated in order to let another couple twirl past them, moving much faster than the speed of the music dictated. He took her hand again as soon as he was able, his other falling to her waist to bring her close. “So are you. A good dancer, I mean. But I suppose you have to be.”

“True. It’s part of my job.” Nadia hesitated to continue, but decided that a little honesty couldn’t hurt. “It’s been a long time since I’ve had this much fun with it.”

“Well, the night’s still young.” The song ended, and Vasco lowered her into a deep dip. It surprised a loud, delighted laugh from her, and something softened at the edges of his smile. “Let’s see if we can do better than that.”

Tagged by @skogrr Thank you very much! It's a while since I've done one of these, and I've missed them.

Name: Tru/"Oi you" Fandoms (that I write for): Dragon Age, mostly. Still the fandom of my heart. Mass Effect, Deus Ex... uh, accidentally GreedFall? I don't know how or when that happened. Two-shot: Hmm... The actual last two-shot I wrote was Terms & Conditions, a very silly Dorian/Inquisitor modern AU where Gal is the guy Dorian hires to stop his late father's house falling apart. Recently? I suspect that's going to be Driftwood, which can stand on its own as a sort of weird post-canon first-meeting AU, but is trying to tempt me to continue it. (Vasco ends up going looking for Tír Fradí, which has disappeared - and finds it. He also finds De Sardet as a highly avoidant tree god of the island, post-Bad Ending, who transformed against her will. And he ends up falling in love with her anyway.) Weird tree gods! Pining by literal pine! An eventual happy ending! More grumpy commentary by Vasco!

Most popular multi-chapter: Either An Unquenchable Flame or Distraction, probably - both juggernaut pairings, the former close to the game's release and the latter with some fancy forbidden romance, so not so surprising. But surprisingly, Prague, 10:42 PM has done really well, considering it's for a small fandom (Deus Ex) and a rarepair age/rank-difference pairing that I thought would be a one-off experiment? I get it, guys. I like sad repressed stoics too.

Actual worst part of writing: Editing - which can be fun, but that "over and over" stage when you're about to post, especially in a longfic if you fear you've lost the spirit of the thing and the character voices and you can't see the wood for the trees. And when I have to remove a whole scene which Jenga-unbalances the fic, and then I have to redux from the top. Basically, most things to do with pacing. How you choose your titles: I like double-meanings and one word titles. If that fails: quote from a song. If that fails: quote from poetry, but very rarely. Do you outline: Only a little. A bulletpointed list of events or noted-down major lines of dialogue, that's usually it.

Ideas I probably won’t get around to but wouldn’t it be nice: Uh... oh god. I blame so many people for some of these.

Post-Destroy ending where John is attempting to build a shed on Rannoch because that's the kind of thing retired people do, right? and Tali is far better at it than him, and it's just... disgusting fluff.

Actually, just reduxing the early John/Tali stuff with a bit more nuance and a stronger style.

Eva and Kaidan, and their mutually wary first meeting. ("Wow, that's a lot of pomade." "Wow, that's a lot of death-glare.")

AU where Gal and Dorian never met in DAI, and after everything went down, Gal tried to fade into the shadows and leave. He ended up working in Tevinter as an occasional informant/odd-jobs guy the way he was pre-Inquisition. He ends up being a gardener for a bitter, wry magister who seems to hate the entire Magisterium, has recently lost his father to political scheming and murder, and wants to take down the entirety of the remaining Venatori with one staff and maybe his teeth if he has to (hi, Dorian). But first, Dorian's going to drink his own body weight in whiskey and be a recluse for a while and start thinking about time magic again. Gal is trying to keep his head down and should definitely not be falling in love with said magister. Who's someday going to end up at one of the more southerly ports, come across a statue of the great Inquisitor, and go, Oh.

Stuff on Jensen's PT and rebuilding himself post-augs. More of Proprioception, basically.

Mer-AU where Marie De Sardet is still a diplomat attempting to make new connections, just not a human one, and it's a disaster. An awkward disaster. Highlights include her being framed as the beast trying to drown their best captain; her attempting to wobble about on brand-new legs and Vasco's coat while everyone assumes the dear captain has had a few too many; her asking Vasco if his "fascinating markings" glow; them getting into a duel, and her (fondly) getting punted off the side of the ship going "Woo-hoo." OK, I wrote a bit of that, but only a 1k doodle I'll probably never return to.

Non-Naut court AU where Marie gets promised to Bastien D'Arcy, because he's a bit of a layabout but he's also rich, popular at court, and amenable to bribe - [cough] suggestion, and the D'Arcys have prominent trading links with the Alliance. Instead she falls for his far less of a social butterfly, tired, worried-numbers-guy brother Léandre, who's pretty damn uncomfortable around Nauts because he's well aware he nearly got sold to them and he is not the favourite.

Straight-up role-reversal AU (another thing where I've put down 1k that I'll probably never return to), where Marie's Naut name is Paz, and she's a fed-up second-mate who's tired of noble idiots and feels a little strange and conflicted about her mark (and has context for it, because they make frequent crossings to Tír Fradí). Also a little more jaded, without the love of her mother, and not nearly as much of a tryhard as Vasco in canon; she ended up here because she had nowhere else to go and the Nauts were like "Ooh, free kid," and she's well aware. She gets stuck escorting the D'Arcy brothers to Tír Fradí for their new venture and is not looking forward to it. Except one of them is intensely bright and wry and keeps asking questions about the ship and noticing shit he is definitely not meant to notice, and they keep ending up in strange conversations, even if he seems really, really wary and uncomfortable about Nauts.

Some vague stuff about Vasco's thoughts on Jonas and that whole side quest, considering he's also a sea-given and implies sea-given take some shit in the Nauts, and also how damn difficult it must be watching a sea-given's parents endeavour to get their kid back when he knows full well his didn't do that for him.

Actually, just more Vasco POV in general, even though he's damn hard to nail down. I've written much pining for him from Marie's perspective, and I'd like to try things from the opposite. This guy's idea of wooing someone perfectly normally is to panic and then recite Baroque poetry. You know he's sappy as hell in the privacy of his own head, even if he's trying not to be.

Jean and Síora having the "I'm a sad healer who just lost my mother and I'm trying so hard not to crumble under the weight of assisting the leader" mutual talk way too late at night around the campfire and maybe him crying on her shoulder a little, with mutual kindness and the beginnings of attraction, and her finally getting past his jokey-smug facade to understand him.

More stuff about Jean's past in general, and how he wanted to be a doctor before he was dragged away from it by looking after Constantin and being nobility.

Síora and Eseld and the ways they changed over the years; something like an exploration of grief and growing her own will and the ways they very differently view the renaigse. Also maybe more about the en ol menawi magic, if I can worldbuild well enough?

I'd also love to do a GreedFall soulmark AU - it's generally not my kind of trope, I'm not into biological determinism type tropes - just because names and aliases and assumed identities are such a mess in GreedFall and it's a repeated plot point. That said, I feel like it's been done so beautifully in this fandom before that I wouldn't have much to add.

Callouts @ me: So. Many. Commas. So much over-explaining everything. If they get out of the car, your readers do not need a five-page manual of "and then he undid his seatbelt and leaned over to grasp the door handle, and then pulled it, and then stepped a foot out before he almost thought better of it - but no, he was going to get out of this car. The other foot joined the first, and he nearly banged his head on the doorframe."

Best writing traits: People say I have a head for finding small-but-important moments. I'm also told I write likeable protags. People have more than once said my writing makes them feel safe or makes them smile, and I really couldn't ask for more than that. I'll take those.

Spicy tangential opinion: I don't think I have any, really? Oh god, that makes me sound so very boring. Oh! Um. There should be more tree body horror in fandom. And body horror in general. *thumbsup*

I figured I have written quite a lot over the years and especially this year, that putting together something like this, that has everything I’ve written so far in one place all organized would be a good idea! So please! Enjoy!

There’s quite a lot so they’ll all be listed under the read more, They’re all organized by series (fairy tail, swtor, mass effect, dragon age, greedfall, anthem, and smut fics) as well as by pair with a short description, starting with the first fic I wrote (fairy tail) and the latest (fictober 2020 prompts) :D

Ava Reiner/Jonas Balkar: -Fictober 2020, day 20: Did I ask?, Ava/Jonas, Small job featuring a couple of SIS agents, and including a bounty hunter I got attached to in a hurry.

Kyri Dennan/Arn Peralun: -Fictober 2020, day 21: This, this makes it all worth it, Kyri/Arn, little build up for another pair that I didn’t expect to get attached to, featuring some implant maintanence.

Airi/Theron (one off because disaster spy/spy pairing I had to write at least once): -Admittance, 1 chapter, complete

WoW: Aulara Stormdawn/Kieran Grimmarrow: -Lunar Eclipse, (Technically my first fic but I didn’t post it until after Shall We Dance), A story involving Aulara (an orphaned night elf priestess), Koren Haven (her brother from the orphanage, a human paladin), Kieran (a blood elf noble, hunter who doesn’t have much people skills), and the friends they meet including Rokar an old orc shaman and Sen a orc huntress, that navigates through the warcraft story starting with vanilla wow. Currently 7 chapters, on hiatus but planning on picking it up again in 2021! -Fictober 2020, day 4: That didn’t stop you before, Aulara/Kieran, A quest during Legion and a bit of a flashback from one of their first quests together around when they first started fighting side by side during BC -Fictober 2020, day 25: Sometimes you can even see, Aulara/Kieran, The burning of Teldrassil and Kieran deciding he’s willing to risk everything he’s ever known to be with his wife. Koren is there to give him a hand. -Fictober 2020, day 26: How about you trust me for once?, Aulara/Kieran, early BC before they became a couple, Kieran and Aulara get a moment to talk alone in Nagrand, involves something close to an awkward confession. >:3

(hints at Nathaniel being involved with the both of them.)

(also involving me having no clue how they transport people when there’s only one javelin and winging it)

If you know a Naut, it is unlikely you will know their actual name. The only exception to this is if they ever tell you or you're a family member or someone who knew them beforehand. Even then, the former is a bit difficult because of the whole anonymous system the Nauts has.

I believe the biggest reason - and probably the only reason too - on why the Nauts has the system to give a secondary name is to remain anonymous. To prevent families from rethinking their decisions in trading their children to settle a debt and have a passage across the sea. While a family can figure out which child is theirs (much like how we have seen with Jonas), which isn't hard to do since the child doesn't get their appearance change, it could be a bit hard to do if many if not all Nauts know their member as one name and not the other. Any higher ups will not say anything because it's suppose to be a secret. That and you - as a family member - already made the decision to do this. I am not talking about those who didn't get the green light and found out later on. Plus! I think the Nauts give the family time to think. Basically be like "are you SURE you want to go through with this" kind of moment before finalizing everything.

The Nauts are aware that their system is fucked up. Anyone else can too. At the same time, there's nothing you can do since, in the universe of Greedfall, the Nauts - as far as we are aware - are the only seafaring group we know. The only ones that can navigate the ocean safely. So, you basically have to rely on them for everything in terms of sailing to other places. Now, in universes where there are other types of sailors or seafaring groups, the Nauts are known to be the best of the best. The number one group everyone recommends and use a lot because it is both quick to get where you need to be, get to places safely, and have your cargo be transported safely and quickly. There are other groups you can turn to for these kind of stuff but they may not be as reliable as the Nauts or so my HCs goes.

Anyways, the Nauts wants to keep the families from regretting a decision they had time to think about. Some will say yes in a heartbeat because they need a way to get to one country to the next and quickly. And nobody can't really do anything because it's not only written down but also there are witnesses. At least, I think there will be witnesses so nobody can't try to find a loophole.

GreedFall FR #2 Meeting with Vasco of the Nauts and the Theleme faction (history of departure zone, lore, movie) / Rencontre avec Vasco des Nauts et la faction Thélème Sardet meets Cardinal Antonius, ambassador of the Theleme faction, a religious nation. He entrusts her with a mission to find heretics who have taken refuge in the city (this mission is in video # 3). She then assists Kurt in his merchandise recovery mission for the guard intendant (6:01). Meeting with Captain Vasco of the Nauts faction (11:32). De Sardet will help him by investigating to find a cabin boy of his crew who disappeared (18:22). De Sardet found the trace of the cabin boy (29:36) and Mr de Courcillon (30:43) explain the operation of contracts of the Nauts faction, which can include children as a bargaining chip and their political consequences ( 29:36). Jonah is delivered and can return with his crew (33:55). FR : De Sardet rencontre le Cardinal Antonius, ambassadeur de la faction Thélème, une nation religieuse. Il lui confie une mission de retrouver des hérétiques qui se sont réfugiés dans la ville (cette mission est dans la vidéo #3). Read this fun little Greedfall meta/analysis about how the prologue quests all mirror the later quests line for each faction in their own way. This is something Spiders did really well, and especially so with Constantin and his character arc as well.

Let me elaborate. Also below the cut for spoilers.

The game starts with Constantin kidnapped - though our protagonist doesn’t know this to start. He is bereft of any agency whilst locked away in a warehouse. It is only by the intervention of his cousin - De Sardet - does he gain his agency and freedom back. To make decisions for himself and to assume his responsibilities, which he neither does regardless if you’ve saved him before or after speaking with the Bridge Alliance or Theleme Embassies. With no coded lines (so far as I’m aware) should you save him first and visit. But he does curiously have some lines about Jonas during the prologue Naut quest about abusive fathers, which is really telling of the relationship if Constantin can relate to the situation Jonas is in. And says that Constantin had no power or agency even with his family.

Yet, he is being granted a lofty position far from his father. The voyage being the catalyst that will grant Constantin freedom from his father’s abusive control and the kidnapping threatened that. But De Sardet saved him, which is a common situation given Constantin describes the encounter as his cousin sweeping up to save him like the damsel in distress he is.

Setting the stage and foreshadowing how the rest of his character arc goes on and mirroring the same threat to power and agency that En On Mil Fritchimen (EOMF) eventually has.

I know, what? Just stick with me.

Now Constantin arrives in Tir Fradi finally free to do as he wishes as he’s granted authority and power of the city of New Serene. It's his fresh start and what does he do with it? Well he decides not to do what his predecessor, Lady Morange, did in making deals that had large exploitative loopholes; nor does he do what his neighbors have done (Hikmet & San Matheus) with regard to the natives. Instead he remains this passive neutral force, sending his cousin to help settle conflict.

EOMF is similarly a passive neutral force. Sending others to help settle conflict on the island, High King Vinbarr and the doneigada.

Both of them with their own agency, freedom, and power within their own domains. But only for so long.

When Constantin is revealed to have the Malichor. The very notion of death is a threat to his new found freedom and agency. And as always, he is the damsel where his cousin must save him.

But this is where the script flips from the way things were set up in the prologue. The Malichor is not something De Sardet can easily fix. Instead, it is something an outside source has to save him, and this is fundamentally where it changes and goes horribly wrong (or right for some of you).

Now Constantin does get kidnapped again, following the kidnapping script from the prologue. But this is a nested recurrence heralding the change in arc format. Saving Constantin from Vinbarr does not hold the same weight as saving him from the bandits. Because the original conflict was saving him the Malichor that De Sardet could no do and had to outsource, which put him in harm's way again. And Constantin has just been bonded to the island, made an On Ol Menawi. Which still does not cure him of the Malichor by the looks of it (and by how EOMF says the hope for the cure dies with him). Instead the ritual seems to halt the infection and something else.

It changes him.

Whether the actual connection did or whether it was coming back from the brink of death - you can decide. But it changes his character. De Sardet saving him from Vinbarr is the last time he is truly a damsel.

Enter EOMF’s arc. Who up until this point, De Sardet has been searching to speak with them to find a way to cure the Malichor, to little luck. Yet EOMF has kept away, never speaking, never letting Vinbarr know this “flesh of my land” was searching for him despite him being able to send all manner of people to speak on his behalf. He not once sought to do so with De Sardet to aid in their quest. Only curiously allowing it when he feels threatened by someone only De Sardet could actually stop.

EOMF says Constantin stole his strength, and that strength - power is what has driven Constantin mad. And well you know what they say about power? It corrupts.

Both Constantin’s conflict of facing death with the Malichor and EOMF’s conflict of facing death thanks to Constantin are mirrored with the transference of power between them and the role of Damsel that De Sardet must save.

It's quite poetic. You're either saving EOMF (new damsel) like you saved Constantin (old damsel) in the prologue. Or, you're saving Constantin (old damsel) and killing EOMF(new damsel).
