Guardians 3 thought dump
Aaaah i actually liked an MCU movie for once
The Guardians were kind of the perfect team to go up against that type of villain, a team thats taken two movies to learn and are still in some ways learning that their differences and flaws are what makes them a family, up against someone who sees those flaws as a failure to be discarded. All of the Guardians spend a lot of time across all three films trying to escape how others view them, so this antagonist really feels like the perfect choice to culminate the trilogy
Also man the russos took a fat wet shit all over gamoras arc and james gunn still managed to salvage it and make it work, I was fucking terrified the whole movie that they were gonna end up together when thats literally impossible with this gamora, But gamora calls out quill immediately in this, and tells him thats shes not that person he so desperately wants. Peter still at least has the arc that he was meant to have regardless of gamoras fridging, where he needed to realize that hes projecting what he needs from other people onto those people, especially gamora. The movie still hints that they COULD end up being together, they just both need to spend time becoming more actualized versions of themselves. And peter needs to resolve more of his emotional baggage and sexism.
Its funny because from the way 2 ended its really obvious that gunn had planned for them to be together in 3 but that basically got ruined when she got tossed into the infinity stone pit. :/ i’m glad gunn was smart enough to realize that trying to redo 2 movies worth of relationship buildup across one movie was a bad idea
Lets see what else
Oh, hey Nathan fillion, long time no see! I’m glad you finally got to be in a story about a ragtag found family in space that didn’t end up getting canned, and i think the fight you did in the building that looked like a middle school science textbook illustration rocked, 10/10 keep rocking the Michelin man fit
I like that Adam Warlock is a big dumb idiot man that carries a pet around and listens to king crimson because its super obvious gunn had no clue what to do with him but had to have him there because the mcu continues to be an ever expanding nightmare mess. 10/10 no notes
Obviously the i am groot reveal was cute, and also a kind of cycle break that didn’t feel forced or like it had extra gravitas added to it, the reveal that the audience is part of the family now just gets to be a simple little moment
I love that nebula gets to be relatively more relaxed in this movie on the whole, she honestly deserves it, let her sip her lil sodie pop.
I loved Draxs lil dad moment in the third act as well, and how it ends up forcing nebula to learn that emotional intelligence is just as vital to have a practical intelligence. Up until that point she really underestimated him and a lot of the rest of the team because she had been taught by thanos a lot of the same things our villain believed, that theres only one kind of way to be, and that only perfection and results matter. She ends up learning through the guardians and drax that we each of our own individual strengths and perceived flaws, and that real perfection is in the culmination of those forces in our lives. I thought it was nice :)
The last thing i can think of is that I liked how a series defined musically by track from the 70’s and 80’s ends off with a track from the 2000’s. A way of communicating subtly our characters aren’t trapped in their past anymore. Great stuff
Anyways thats what i got atm, if you stumbled on this and are wanting more mcu stuff, sorry to disappoint, this is prolly the last mcu thing i’m checking in for unless something reveals itself to be more interesting in the future. I wanna try and talk more about other things tho, so maybe you will like those posts!

'I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you, my love
I send this smile over to you.'
The lyrics seemed to bounce and echo down the narrow interior corridors of Knowhere's underbelly like an intimate performance, an oasis of peace by comparison to the chaos above decks. With a number of children and animals to accommodate fast, Guardians and Ravagers alike had had their hands full in the aftermath of their latest, greatest escapade.
Even down here Rocket was plagued with visitors, but neither the raccon kit gently chewing on his tail nor the penguin clattering noisily as it explored the cabin drew his eyes from the scrolling data sets he was reading.
His own file. No sooner had he been well enough to understand what the object was, Rocket had pocketed the bizarre little data packet and only now had he found time to really dig into it. The recordings, he decided, were for another time.
It was funny, in a twisted kinda way, he thought as he scanned through progress logs and genetic sequencing codes. Before he'd met the Guardians, seeing this would have felt akin to seeing his entire soul bared before his eyes: everything he was and would ever be, condensed into strings of code, data logs and clinically cold observations of traumas he could only recall in hazy snatches.
But he was more, now. More than the sum of some whackjob's obsession with imperfection, more than the little monster he'd always been told he was. He had people who loved him with every one of those imperfections, and struggle though he often might to verbalise it, he loved them with theirs.
Man, family really had made him soft. And he even liked it.
Still, the files made for unsettling - but compelling - reading. Eyes drifted over seemingly endless piles of information, glossing over minutiae in search for what exactly he wasn't certain. Though only the odd sound escaped, he continued to mouth the words to the music playing. He didn't hear the doors sliding open.
'Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
To wither in denial
The bitterness of one who's left alone
Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn...'

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was amazing and so heartfelt!!
Spoilers ⬇️⬇️‼️‼️
The High Evolutionary was a truly terrifying and just evil villain, I don’t know the name of the actor who played him but, he definitely deserves an award for how well and just how much he gave into that role.
Rocket’s backstory was definitely heartbreaking and horrible, but I’m glad it wasn’t what I thought it was gonna be (from what I kept hearing from fans who had seen it) non of the animal experimentation is shown. But from snippets of Rocket’s memory and just the sound of it, you can guess how much more horrible it was in your own mind. (Plus seeing Baby Rocket after he’s experimented on, was so sad and horrible)
Adam was a genuinely funny character, I expected him to be the other stereotypical villain, but they just played him as a superpowered guy that doesn’t know how to properly use his powers and has no clue what’s going on, cause he’s basically a half done experiment.
I was so certain that either Rocket or Peter were gonna end up dying, but neither did and I’m happy for it!
I like how at the end, each character got their own specific happy ending that fit their character, plus Florence and the Machine (Dog Days are Over)!!!!! One of my fav songs, I was dancing along, so glad it was picked for this scene, it genuinely worked perfectly! Wish Gamora and Peter had gotten back together, but as this version of Gamora said “She isn’t the same person” But at least Gamora found somewhere she belongs, with the Ravagers, and where she can properly use her talents and skills. I hope Gamora and Nebula still somehow form or have that sisterly bond again.
Hoping we get either a Rocket spinoff or maybe eventually another Guardians related project in the future, since Rocket is leader now and made his own version of the Guardians. And I’m also really happy that Chris Pratt isn’t leaving Marvel yet, and we’ll eventually be getting more of Star-Lord/Peter in some future Marvel movie!!

i never truly understood the utter devotion to james gunn until tonight. each guardian got their own happy ending in a story grounded in emotional impact without a single main character death. so nice to see characters overcome their trauma and begin to move on with their lives and end a story with a positive outlook. a fucking relief, honestly.
(why couldn’t tony have that with his family though??? or peter and may?? thoughts???)

take on a gotg3 scene (spoilers)
in the scene where peter quill fake-dies in space, adam rescues him in a position clearly reminiscent of michelangelo's creation of adam. however, adam warlock adopts the position of god, not adam. i think this had to do with the film’s narrative of abandoning one’s creator. When Rocket goes to NDE Heaven, Lila tells him, “there are the hands that made you, and there are the hands that guide those hands.” High Evolutionary explicitly tells him, “you think you have worth outside of my use?!” Or something to that effect. Rocket’s journey of self-acceptance is that he has to realize that his worth is not determined by his creator. Rocket runs from his past because he believes it dictates him. In the same way, Adam’s redemption has to do with him abandoning the purpose set out for him by his creator and living his best life as a goofy if absolutely S-tier power-wise super-toddler. In The Creation of Adam, Adam is relatively passive and innocent. God is the actor, the creator. In this film, Rocket and Adam Warlock depose their “gods”/creators so they can embark on journeys of self-creation. These two Adams have to take the position of God, to be their own gods, to fully self-actualize.

I know you play like you're the meanest and the hardest but actually you're the most scared of all. I know you steal batteries you don't need, and you push away anyone who's willing to put up with you because just a little bit of love reminds you how big and empty that hole inside you actually is.

I feel that. I was watching a few reviews and one of them mentioned the ending and I got chills all over again.
