If there's one horror trope (other than the jumpscare) that you could get rid of, what would it be?
I think the one that annoys me the most is cell phones. The dead battery trope, or the inexplicably lost signal trope - I understand why they exist, because it's very hard to justify why people can't use their phones as life lines in a horror movie. I've even gone as far as to lean toward setting things in different decades just to avoid the cell phone problem. It's one of the reasons Bly Manor was set in the 1980s, because we knew that the entire ensemble having access to cell phones would make the plot almost impossible to advance as the story progressed.
Tumblr media
I suppose the other ones I dislike are the "Just a Dream" scares. There are some examples of these done very well - THE DESCENT has a gorgeous one in the first act, which sets up an absolutely heartbreaking one in the final act - but for the most part, these are an excuse to sneak a scare into a story without reason or consequence. I'm guilty of using these myself - sometimes there is huge pressure from above to add scares, and it's too early to let the characters in on the supernatural events - but sometimes these moments are just cynical and frustrating.
Tumblr media
As for jumpscares, as the current Guinness World Record holder for Most Jumpscares in an Episode of Television - more times than not, they work against the horror. There are beautiful examples of scares done magnificently well, but 99/100 of them diffuse tension, I believe.

Y'ALL
I just saw an article about this incredible photoshoot and I'm completely obsessed.
Tumblr media
During covid restrictions, photographer Steven Haining was joking with some friends that "well hey if we all have scuba tanks we could all be breathing our own air during a photo shoot" and then was like wait hold on that's not a bad idea.
Flash forward, and he's doing a full photo shoot in Fathom Five National Marine Park.
Tumblr media
Now please keep in mind that this park is in Tobermory, Canada, on Georgian Bay. It is COLD. The water temp is about 14 C (or 57 F) in the middle of July when they did this shoot. They shot for close to 30 minutes at a depth of 9.5m (32 ft) with the model, Ciara Antoski, having a support person nearby at all times to give her air. Everyone else is in full wetsuits or even dry suits and she has this pretty dress and a weight belt. I have been swimming in Georgian Bay. It is COLD. This is incredibly impressive and must have required intense training.
The results are breathtaking.

And safety first of course:

Link to the photographer's website:
I cannot find any links for the model Ciara Antoski but if I do I'll add them here.
Anyways. Figured this is the kind of thing tumblr might appreciate!

Guinness gracious : bizarre world records / Patrice Baldwin.
Are the Guinness Books of World Records still popular reading material for kids?
This item includes a selection of some notable world records, such as "Most Tattoos", "Fastest Furniture" and "Most Spoons Balanced on the Face".
You know, Iowa also boosts many "World Records", including the world's largest wooden nickel right here in Iowa City!

A high school senior in Louisiana has received more than 170 college acceptance letters and more than $9 million in scholarship offers.
Dennis Maliq Barnes, a 16-year-old senior at International High School of New Orleans, told CNN he wasn’t initially looking to set any records. As I applied to more schools, as my numbers went up, with the financial aid and acceptances into universities, I became intrigued,” Barnes said, adding that when he was told he was close to the record, he “just went for it.”
Barnes said he began applying to schools in August 2022 and took pride in watching the acceptances and scholarships roll in. “It was never really a surprise for me once I reached that number,” Barnes said.
School officials say Barnes’ accomplishment sets a new world record and have reached out to the Guinness Book of World Records to make it official, according to Clark Castle, a spokesman for the school and Barnes. CNN reached out to The Guinness Book of World Records for comment.
Barnes has a 4.98 GPA and is graduating two years early and hasn’t decided which school he will attend in the fall.
“I don’t know where I want to go,” Barnes said, but added, “I intend to pursue computer science,” and then go to law school. Barnes credits his family and friends and faith in God for his accomplishments.
“I am a God-fearing young man; I keep God first,” he said.
Barnes has applied to 200 schools and plans to announce his final decision in early May before graduation on May 24th.And for those coming behind him, Barnes had some advice, “If you keep your school, your education a priority and keep God in the mix, then you are definitely going to be successful no matter what you do.”

tonight, my dog Renner and I got to help break a world record!!!
Tumblr media
The record was for the Most Dogs Attending A Film Screening, and the previous record was 112. Needed 120 to beat it. The drive in had an official area with an occupancy limit of 200, and when they hit that limit, they had to stop registering people and dogs for the record attempt, with HALF the line still left to g. So OFFICIALLY, the final total was 199, but UNOFFICIALLY, there was at least 400 dogs there tonight. We all watched A Dog's Way Home, which I had missed in the theaters, so that was awesome, too, and Renner was an absolute smash hit because he is perfect.
Eventually, we will receive an official certificate of participation in the record breaking, as well as a couple of portraits taken there. we also got a t-shirt, a Wisdom Panel doggie DNA test kit!!!, a gift card, and a neat bumper sticker. It was such a blast, and Renner enjoyed all the attention for being the only Scottish Deerhound there. There were SO MANY COOL DOGS and I cannot wait to share the official images once they go live!!!

Absolutely fascinating article. Most poignant detail: until 2007 the record for largest collection of four-leaf clovers was held by a man who collected them from the grounds of a prison where he was serving a life sentence.
