Reformation anti-Luther propaganda
The below piece is a woodcut by Erhard Schoen, on behalf of the Catholic church it serves to slander Martin Luther as a pawn of the Devil as he was critical of the practices of the Catholic church.
The Devil with a Bagpipe, Erhard Schoen,1535, woodcut.
The wood cut is effective propaganda, it is easily recognizable and instantly understood upon a glance, the devil is playing Luther like an instrument, he is in control of whatever sound comes out of him (his speech)
It leveraged Catholic people of the time as they were diametrically opposed to anything satanic by virtue of them being Catholic and so by associating Luther with the devil there is no need to explain or dispute Luther’s claims, it is easier to just associate him with something they already are strictly opposed to.
Another example of anti-Luther reformation propaganda using the same tactics is the below piece by Hans Brosamer.
Seven-headed Martin Luther, Hans Brosamer, 1529, woodcut, 19.5 × 13.9 cm
It depicts Luther and his followers as the seven headed beast of the apocalypse, again associating Luther with the antagonists of the institution he is trying to persuade.
