and he cries and cries, cries for everything he has been, for everything he might have been, for every old hurt, for every old happiness, cries for the shame and joy of finally getting to be a child...
Harold and Jude from Hanya Yanagihara's "A Little Life". It's not what I usually post here, but I've had this scene on the back of my mind for a while now, and after rereading it for the millionth time I decided to give in and draw it. Put way too much of myself into this to not post it to my main, so here we are.

"But instead he finds Harold wrapping him in his arms, and he tries to push him away, but Julia is holding him too, leaning over the carapace of his wheelchair, and he is trapped between them."

Whatever you do, don’t think about the fact that both Harold and Jude share the inability to not make things more elaborate than necessary. Jude with his extensive cleaning before a party, spending night after night making several different kinds of sweet pastries, making sure each one is perfect. Harold with his ambitious thanksgiving projects, trying to make extravagant dishes like duck à l’orange or trout “stuffed with other stuff”, only to give up and have yet another traditional Turkey dinner.
Lispenard Street - Chapter 3
“Don’t make this complicated,” was the other thing JB had said, but Willem and Malcolm knew that was a caution meant solely for Jude, who had a tendency to make things more elaborate than was necessary…”
The Postman - Chapter 3
“It was his opinion (shared by Julia) that Harold had a tendency to make thanksgiving more complicated than it needed to be.”
Like father like son.

My toxic trait is that I physically cannot process any sort of fictional father-son relationship without my brain turning it into Irondad and it’s making reading all of Harold and Jude’s scenes in A Little Life really complicated.

Do you guys think Jude ever publicly claimed Harold as “my father” to anyone? 🤔
