An in-depth analysis of BNHA Season 1: Quirk discrimination goes even deeper than we thought.
Rewatching the subbed version of episode 4 specifically,
I noticed some VERY interesting wording behind what the background characters had to say about Midoriya after he revealed his Quirk to knock out the biggest robot on the field.  I compared the anime’s wording to the Viz manga translation as well.
The first of the two major things that are made explicitly clear about the way people view Midoriya at this time is with regards to the line
If he had such a powerful Quirk, what kind of life did he live that made him so jumpy? (Anime subbed),
in the Viz manga, this line was translated as “what made him a scaredy-cat?” instead of “jumpy”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s implicitly possible that they did not consider the ‘life he lived’ as a cause for his timidness when they assumed he did not have a powerful Quirk, as if people with weak quirks were supposed to be timid by nature?
Perhaps it would be one thing if Midoriya was just shy & people were surprised by his timidness more-so because ‘people with powerful quirks are supposed to be confident,’ as opposed to ‘people with weak Quirks are supposed to be timid,’ (a slight but important difference).  However, one background character specifically mentioned that Midoriya “flinches at the slightest touch.” flinching at the slightest touch is not normal, that kind of reaction is often learned.  Why only suddenly consider ‘what kind of life did he live that made him so jumpy,’ or ‘how did he get to be a scaredy-cat’ after learning he has a powerful Quirk?
-
But the line that REALLY raised my eyebrows, was the last one.
There’s no mistaking that he’s an amazing guy (Anime sub)
He’s something special (Viz)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both versions, they aren’t just referring to his Quirk, but him AS A PERSON.
Compare this to the way they were treating Midoriya before.  He was being ridiculed & sneered at all day.
Yet it was the reveal of his QUIRK that caused a complete reversal of people’s attitudes towards him.  The power of the Quirk alone did it, NOT a score or passing the test.
Tumblr media
The manga faces seemed slightly crueler than the Anime for some shots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-
Of course, nobody is rude to Midoriya anymore about his muttering, or obsessive note-taking, or even being jumpy & spazzy...
... but I have to wonder how different their attitudes towards his behavior would have been if he had a weak Quirk, or if he was still Quirkless.
This would not be the first time someone has been judged for their Quirk, or a combination of their Quirk and attitude. Take Aoyama for perhaps one of the subtler examples, & Shinsou for one of the more blatant examples.
Yet in episode 4, simply seeing the complete reversal of attitude towards the SAME person was very jarring.  It really drives home how important power is in the world of My Hero Academia.

Snow White and the 1026 Dwarfs
Snow White woke up in the strangest little bed!   She'd happened upon the small, cozy house deep in the woods, found nobody at home, and promptly crashed in the first bed she'd spotted.  Sleep claimed her then, dragging her away to a place of relative peace and calm... carefully letting her ignore how tiny all the furnishings were, how oddly low were the ceilings and fixtures. And now, the next morning!  What odd little men surrounded her!  Normally she'd be alarmed by close proximity to so many strangers, but the events of the past day had granted her an oddly calm outlook on life.  Nothing much rattled her anymore. Snow White blinked sleepily, yawned, and stretched.  The men watched her every movement, transfixed. "Do you talk?" She asked experimentally. One older man -- tiny, rotund, and wiser than the rest with a long white beard -- glanced around at the others and nodded.  He adjusted his spectacles and stepped forward. "I'm Doc," he explained with a jolly chuckle.  "And these are my friends: Smarmy, Ragey, Explainy, Glossy, Pookie, Pesty, Grippy, Inebriated, Teary, Swampy, Piggy, Catty, Hitler, Stroky, Zombie, "We'd be honored if you stayed!" All 1026 dwarfs nodded in agreement, and were so thrilled they threw Snow White a party to celebrate their new friendship.  The party lasted late into the evening, and everyone passed out with full tummies and a happy smile lighting their faces. The next day the dwarfs arose early and prepared for work.  Snow White cooked them breakfast and when it was time to leave they all lined up at the door to bid her farewell for the day. A new beginning:
An OC story
Chapter 2
“Do you think she had some sort of overdose?” The paramedics couldn’t exactly come up with any explanation and the drug tests came back negative. “I don’t think so, this is a new bottle and according to the note on the bottle it says she’s been off the medication for some time but they suggested she start taking it again.” Meanwhile Io was siting on the sidewalk trying to stay calm, she was already in enough trouble as is.
Jessi was still being examined they had no idea what was wrong with her. “what should we do with them? I mean one is perfectly fine while the other just sent one of my men into shock” The paramedic simply sighed in exhaustion. “Well if I were to suggest something, I’d recommend taking these girls to the ninja. Perhaps they would have an idea of what to do with them, maybe they’ll have an explanation for this one over here.” Io suddenly looked up in shock by the suggestion. “Wait, you’re taking us to the ninja? Why?” None of them seemed to care about answering Io’s question, they were just in a hurry to get rid of these girls.
The main police officer and paramedic escorted the girls to the monastery where they ninja were living, they agreed to take the girls in for a while seeing as they didn’t have an actual place to stay. Lloyd and the others made their way outside to greet their new guests, Io was trying to push Jessi forward but she wouldn’t hardly move. “Damn it Jess let’s go I promise it won’t be that bad.” Ever since Jessi had woken from her sedated state a few hours ago she had been more jumpy and shaky. “No I want nothing to do with these chuckle fucks, now stop pushing me!”Io simply sighed and picked Jessi up and continued walking.
Once they reached the monastery the officer proceeded to introduce the two young ladies to the ninja. “This here is Io, she may argue with you she’s not one to back down easy.” Io then put Jessi back down on her feet, Jessi just looked at the ninja then simply turned her head away from them. Lloyd stepped forward to introduce himself and the others. “As you probably know already I’m Lloyd, here we have Kai, Zane, Nya and over there is Jay and Cole.” Io was practically starstruck at the fact that she was meeting the green ninja, her face was basically a tomato. She had always had a thing for the green ninja so seeing her act all spazzy was no shock at all. Jessi looked over at the other ninja. The one who really caught her eye was Cole. Something about him just seemed to make her tick, but as soon as they made eye contact Jessi just rolled her eyes and looked at the ground.
“So now we get to babysit some girls?” Kai asked with a smirk plastered on his face. Lloyd just glared at him and Nya gave him a whack upside the head. Jessi gave a little snicker seeing this egotistical tool get a good smack. Lloyd showed the girls where they would be staying, the room was pretty basic having 2 twin sized beds with their own nightstand, a large closet and a bathroom. There was also a small desk in the corner and a door that lead to a small balcony overlooking the mountain.
“If you guys need anything at all just ask, I hope you enjoy your stay.” Io and Jessi thanked Lloyd for his kind hospitality and proceeded to put away what basic things they had. “He’s so nice and so hot.” Io said as she continued fawning over Lloyd. “I guess their ok, but that Cole guy seems like a damn tool. A no good disrespectful bastard.” Jessi said as she put some of her clothes in one of the dresser drawers. Io noticed Jessi wasn’t really herself, she was more agitated than usual and was more fidgety and nervous. Something was definitely up with her.

My best friend just told me how stupid i was...i have been acting like a witchcraft schoolgirl....i am pretty sure that someone who seems to want to....wont call....either he is clever/self protection/busy with his 3-4 other girlfriends...i hope he never sees this...but because i made this magic...i think i can escape his magic.. and get back my freedom..
I will have upper hand...
I broke all rules because he is soooo freaking cute, i nearly become violent...he is a slight, very quite and sweet 2nd generation Colombian boy....however....he could just be a smooth talking operator....i have tried my superstitious voodoo to get him out of my head...it is inappropriate..too joven...
But none of the Latinos...who ARE SUPER CUTE...compare...not a one seems like a him...he is secretive and perhaps has a touch of arrogance, or innocence or....you see, mysterious....he is not much taller then me at 5’5 and animal silent when he enters room....
I cannot divulge where we live but its like roommates...
I am a noisy, entitled, spazzy,brat...
He is an ambitious person, raised as a gentleman....
Or...not sure...he is always..ALWAYS calm and confident....why? He cant know much yet...how is it i never ruffle his feathers??
I waiting for the sting of rejection...and then the spell will be broken..until then i can barely look at him..
I say this too him in my spirit...
All I want is to sit on your lap, so tou feel my being smaller..the good wieght of my curves...the slow kiss that brings the heat...
Yes i have lived this possibility with him as some science claims...and it was sick/addictive/hot....it was sometimes fast and rough
And then trancelike/erotic/emotional....
I want out of this attraction because he will always win..
By not responding unless he has chosen the control...but
Because i risked all by hiding note with my number...i can just admire from afar...i know he took the note...bit likely is too smart to call or text...someone who is not only a hopeless case....but jumpy and storms away from him....My word have mercy...
On the 9th timeline...neither ofnis could last 2 minutes, for the pure physical lust....
