Hebe ‘Franciscana Variegata’ (Syn. H. X franciscana ‘Variegata’ or H. ‘Silver Queen’ (currently what the RHS accepts as correct)) today’s #oneadayplant. . As a member of the Hebe Society, I am interested in a great many varieties. Join the society and follow on social media @hebesociety. As a commercial horticulturist, I am aware of how commonly seen this plant is in seasonal bedding schemes. It is, however, perfectly hardy, doing particularly well in coastal gardens. While most people grow it in winter window boxes and hanging baskets it is just as happy in pots, containers or even in the ground. . Though the name is constantly in question, the one I have gone with is my preferred. That is even ignoring the fact that Hebe has undergone a name change and are now called Shrubby Veronica. Madness!!! . I’m not generally a fan of variegated plants, but I have long liked this plant. Bold variegation, striking contrast from mauve flowers, which can appear in mild gardens throughout the year. . #hebe #hebesoc #hebefranciscana #hebefranciscanavariegata #veronica #evergreen #shrub #purple #mauve #flowers #beddingplants #beddingscheme #hardyplants #namechanges #coastalgarden #garden #plantingdesign #gardening #gardeningtips #gardeningadvice #iplantsman #horticulture #commercialhorticulture #variegatedplants (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCnXUrRg4fr/?igshid=14yb14nmnjaap

Hebe pimeleoides just coming into flower is today’s Father’s Day #oneadayplant. . The form ‘Quicksilver’ is quite often seen and a good cultivar. It has much smaller leaves and radiating habit. The species is fairly variable, but the selection I grow is a fairly loose growing shrub to 75cm (2.5’) tall. It associates really well with copper-coloured grasses, which can help to compensate for the looseness of form. . Lovely grey, evergreen foliage (should be ‘evergrey foliage’) set against black stems and a cute pale lilac-mauve flower in June-July. . There are around 100 different species of Hebe and many are quite different. We know a lot of them well in the UK, though only a handful are planted regularly and generally monotonously regularly to make them appear dull. There are also a couple of thousand named cultivars in a wide range leaf and flower colours and sizes. Well worth growing and ideally suited to the UK, especially coastal UK, Hebe are New Zealand’s largest Genus of plants. . Join the @hebesociety for more info on Hebe and New Zealand Plants. . #hebe #hebepimeleoides #hebesoc #evergreen #grey #foliage #lilac #mauve #tiny #flowers #june #july #hardy #shrub #plant #iplantsman #newzealand #newzealandflora #plants #gardens #landscapes #gardening #fathersday #myplants #gardenista #gardeningguru #mygarden #grasses (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CBsXmFjgZne/?igshid=mgnibe7yn9b5

Hebe ‘Fragrant Jewel’ #oneadayplant . I won’t be drawn into a long debate about whether we should now be calling all Hebe Veronica again. Personally, I think it is ridiculous and instead of creating a super-genus, botanists should have considered the value of this name change, or been more inventive classing Hebe as the name for all of the ‘Shrubby Veronica’ species even if officially they were to sit within the Veronica genus. Often I find these changes utterly pointless and actually a cost to others. So, no, it is a Hebe and that’s that. . Slightly fragrant flowers, but really only noticeable when the plant is of a good size and has lots of open flower spikes on a warm day. Can get over 2.1m (7’) tall, so not insignificant. . This is a handsome, easygoing large shrub with a large 10cm (4”) amethyst-purple-blue flower spikes popular with bees, butterflies and other pollinators. . A good thing and well worth growing. I suspect thought haven’t seen that it would make an excellent hedge. . #hebe #hebesoc #garden #plant #newzealandplants #hebefragrantjewel #plants #shrubs #evergreen #scentedflowers #gardening #mygarden #gardenista #gardeningforwildlife #bees #butterflies #pollinatorgarden #pollinatorplants #plantingdesign (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CA2PLx-gb-C/?igshid=14k8235ii4gu

It was great to see my friends @gardenbeautyuk exhibit their new gorgeous looking Cistus ‘Pink Gin’ @gardenpresevent. As great #UK growers, especially of #Hebe myself and everyone @hebesociety wish them well with this launch. Personally, I can’t wait to try growing it myself. #cistus #shrubs #plants #garden #hebesoc #flower #gardenpressevent #ukgrower #nursery (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9tOcMfg4Bv/?igshid=1hykhgw6lncdk

Anyone who knows me, is acutely aware of my passion for the Genus #Hebe! A fully paid up member of the Hebe Society #HebeSoc, I recognised a long time ago that this wonderful New Zealand #plant group was varied, Horticulturally interesting and excellent evergreen selections for the #UK and temperate #gardener. Pictured is Hebe ‘Wiri Mist’, which is very mildew resistant, hardy and free-flowering with brilliant, pure-white #flowers against Apple-green #foliage. A belter of a plant! #wellworthgrowing makes a good alternative to smaller Box Balls (Buxus). #plantsofinstagram #shrubs #gardens #troublefreeplants https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqu5-UTFFVw/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1lxooxg7a7q2t
