Hello!!

I wanted to ask if you would be willing to share how you go about finding the references for the injuries you depict in your work? Your pieces where the CoD boys are sporting injuries, fresh and old, are always so lifelike and to my untrained eye seem entirely medically correct.

I have been trying my hand at drawing the boys retired and resting as well, but I’m finding it difficult to decide what work injuries to add and how to find the respective references.

How do you decide what injuries to portray? And how do you go about finding the reference material?

Oooh ok ok! I'm gonna post my answer publically because I think others would find this interesting too!

To preface, I am definitely NOT a medical professional, and as such, a lot of the stuff I choose to depict in my art is not so much..ah, medically accurate as it is....aesthetically pleasing 🤭

I'll start with scars, as a lot of us enjoy slashing up Simon's face with them, lol. Generally, I'll do a cursory google image search for the type of scar I'm looking for (be warned, these can be graphic) with searches like 'burn scar' 'surgery scar' etc. But I find that for things like cuts and lacerations, real-life scars are a bit innocuous and lame 🤷‍♀️ Unfortunately not everyone's skin wants to retain that perfect slash look™️😔

So what I usually end up referencing are costume prosthetic scars ✨

As you can see, they're pretty gnarly:

And you definitely don't have to go this intense, but I find that the dramatic, carved-like appearance of these translate better to art than a realistically healed wound 🤙

The other thing to consider is the prevalence of injuries in the military. From what I've gathered, the most common will be back/shoulder/limb injuries, just a general fucking up of the whole musculoskeletal system in general due to constant overuse 🤕 Hearing loss, shrapnel/blast/burn injuries are also common, as well as all the negative psychological effects :') goooood times (not)

I think it's neat to look up real-life examples of these things, but it can get a bit intense if you're squeamish...

SafeSearch is OFF, the horrors are REal 😳

So yeah...I tend to tone things down, all things considered...😅

For this particular piece:

I researched broken humerus injuries and treatment 👍 Poor boy 🥺(Yes, I am aware that I consumed entire articles and did a shit ton of research about this just to go ahead and put a female's x-ray in this fucking picture sdfghjkl rip💀😭)

But here you can see the actual process for applying the brace for this particular injury:

When I draw Johnny with a knee brace, it's usually a real authentic one you can buy on amazon:

As for ones like this:

I tend to just...scatter some wounds around and patch them up accordingly, lol. Bruising around the eyes is common with any head injury, and surgical stitching will offer a nice puckered skin effect mmm 👌 (I swear I'm normal abt this)

I'm sure the medical malpractice lawsuits are stacking up for me now, but again--it's usually more about the ✨visuals✨

My parting advice would be--go nuts! Feel free to maim and mutilate and mangle to your heart's content 🥰

As the soft glow of the moonlight traveled through the crack in the curtains, I found myself curled up in my bed, eyes glued to my phone screen. Every two minutes, I would nervously glance at the time and then back at my phone, unable to resist the urge to check for a text, a call, or a notification from Matt. The silence in my room was deafening, and the only sound that seemed to penetrate my thoughts was the rapid rhythm of my heartbeat.

I couldn't believe it. After weeks of texting and planning, Matt had suddenly gone silent. We were supposed to meet in two days, and he hadn't responded to a single one of my texts today. I tried calling him, but his phone went straight to voicemail. The worry was killing me, and I felt like I was on the edge of my seat, waiting for something, anything, to happen.

The next morning, I forced myself to get out of bed and go through my day as if everything were normal. I tried to focus on school and my friends, but Matt was always at the back of my mind. Every time my phone buzzed with a notification, my heart would leap into my throat, hoping against hope that it was him.

As the day dragged on, I began to feel more and more alone. The thought of him purposely ignoring me or ghosting me was too much to bear. I tried to distract myself by going out with my friends, but the forced laughter and fake ass smiles only served to remind me of how much I missed him. I couldn't help but wonder what I had done wrong and if there was anything I could have said or done differently.

Eventually, I found myself back in my room, unable to shake the feeling that had settled in the pit of my stomach. I sat on my bed curled up, my fingers trembling as I dialed his number. When I heard his voicemail greeting, I knew exactly what I had to do. I took a deep breath and began to record my message, my voice shaking.

"Hey, Matt," I started, my voice barely audible. "It's me, y/n. I don't know what's going on, and I'm really worried. I miss you and I need to talk to you. Please, just call me back or respond to one of my texts" - my voice broke, and I had to take a moment to compose myself. "I hope everything's okay".

With shaking fingers, I pressed the "send" button, feeling a mixture of hope and despair wash over me. As I disconnected the call, I stared at the screen of my phone, willing it to light up with a message from him. But it remained stubbornly dark and silent.

Time seemed to slow down as I waited for what felt like an eternity. I couldn't concentrate on anything, and every time my phone buzzed with a notification from someone else, my heart would leap into my throat, only to be crushed when I realized it wasn't Matt.

I decided to get out of my room and ask my mom if there was anything she needed help with in the kitchen. Maybe if I distracted myself, I'd be able to clear my head and figure out what was going on with Matt. And as I chopped vegetables and stirred pots, my thoughts drifted back to him. I wondered if he was okay if something had come up that prevented him from responding to me. Maybe he was just busy with something important.

But the more I thought about it, the more my doubts started to creep in. Matt had always been there, no matter what. He'd never gone silent like this before. The silence between us felt almost like a heavy weight pressing down on my chest.

As I finished up in the kitchen and started to head back to my room, my phone buzzed with an incoming call. My heart did a flip, and I hurried to pick it up, hoping that it was Matt. But when I saw the unfamiliar number, my heart sank. I hesitated for a moment before answering, not sure what to expect.

"Hello?" I said, my voice trembling slightly.

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before an unfamiliar voice responded, "Is this uh…panties…girl? Y/N?" The way they said it, with a hint of nervousness and confusion, made my heart sink even further. It wasn't Matt, But only Matt called me that. Strange.

"Um, yeah, this is her," I said, my voice wavering slightly. "Who's this?" The stranger on the other end of the line didn't respond right away. There was a long, tense silence, and then they finally spoke up.

"Look, I don't know if you remember me or not, but…I'm Matt's brother. And I'm really sorry to tell you this, but…Matt's been in a really bad car accident. He's in the hospital, and they say he might not make it. I'm so sorry, I shouldn't be telling you this like this…but I thought you should know since you seem like you really care about him from the texts I've seen you send" the voice on the other end of the line said, clearly struggling to keep their emotions in check.

I felt my world come crashing down around me as I listened to Matt's brother's words. My feelings were a jumbled mess of disbelief, fear, and heartache. I stood there in the hallway, my knees weak and my hands shaking as I struggled to find the words to respond. "I-I can't believe this," I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper. "Is he okay? What can I do? I-I need to see him."

There was another long silence on the other end of the line before Matt's brother spoke again. "Yeah, look, I know this is hard to hear, and I'm sorry I had to be the one to tell you. The doctors are doing everything they can, but…" He paused sighing "Look, if you want to see him, I'll send you the address or something. But you should probably wait until the morning, they're all pretty shaken up at the hospital right now and they might not let anyone else in for a while."

I couldn't help but feel a desperate urge to rush to the hospital, to be by his side. "Okay," I managed to say, my voice still shaking. "Thank you for telling me. And…thank you for telling me about…the accident." I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what else to say. "I'll see you in the morning, then."
