May 5th is...
Cartoonists Day -  In 1895 a man named Richard F. Outcault introduced a small bald kid in a yellow nightshirt to the world in an incredibly popular publication , the New York World. Little did Richard know that when he first created this character, it would lead to a revolution in how stories were told and presented in sequential art pieces, but would in fact create a new standard piece of content for newspapers everywhere.  The longest-running newspaper cartoon in history, to date, is called The Katzenjammer Kids, which debuted in 1897 in the American Humorist, and has changed over into the hands of three different cartoonists. The original cartoonist of the comic, Rudolph Dirks, was one of the first to regularly indicate dialogue through speech balloons; speech balloons were standardized as the form in which cartoonists indicated dialogue by the early 1900s, and is still being used today.  For many years, cartoons were viewed as low-brow in comparison to other forms of art, but the work of cartoonists is important and underappreciated.
Cinco de Mayo -  Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. The day is also known as Battle of Puebla Day. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States, Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
Hoagie Day - The humble hoagie first appeared on the plates of Americans around or soon after 1953, when the sandwich was first made in the World War I Philadelphia shipyards. At the time, Italians working in the yards would make a sandwich by putting meats, cheese and lettuce in a soft baguette-shaped roll. This easy-to-make but delicious creation would soon be labeled with the nickname of ‘the Hog Island’. This, perhaps because it doesn’t quite roll off the tongue, would soon become known as a ‘hoagie’. There’s also a second theory of the hoagie’s birth, wherin the sandwich is said to have been created by street food vendors who were known as ‘hokey-pokey men’ in the early 20th century. Supposedly, these food sellers would slice a long loaf in half and stuff it with antipasto salad before selling it as a filling snack.
Hug A Shed And Take A Selfie Day - It  is just a way of showing these humble structures the love they’re due. Those of us of the back yard crew know how much this little sanctuary matters.  It’s full of all the smells of our special leisure time, whether that’s grease and oil or earth and fertilizer.
International Midwives Day - The history of Midwifery goes back to prehistory, though there are records all over the world of midwife traditions. These women are those who made a study of the birthing process and the vital role it plays in perpetuating the species and its cultural significance. While it’s true in ancient days their practices were based heavily in experience and superstition, today’s midwives are just as capable and competent at seeing a woman to term as the more commonly used OB/GYN’s and Obstetricians. Thousands of years of tradition has rendered this field of medicine almost exclusively a woman’s art. So much so, in fact, that in order to be a midwife in ancient Greece you had to have given birth yourself, making it an exclusively female practice. It is this history that led to the division between Midwifery and Obstetricians, a split that took place in 17th Century Europe. While the practice of midwifery fell off for a while in the past couple hundred years, there is a rising movement towards home birth that is making this practice more relevant than ever.
Nail Day -  Fake nails have a long history of development over the past decade, and since then, fake nails have become all the crazy for people who love to keep up with the latest fashion trends.
Revenge of the Fifth Day -  Because it immediately follows Star Wars Day, Revenge of the Fifth is meant to be a day for fans to pass over onto to the Dark Side – for one day, at least. Today, Star Wars geeks will be celebrating the titular Sith Lords from the long-running franchise. Because bad guys need love too!
School Nurse Day - As healers, comforters, and role models for children, school nurses do their job well and rise up to the challenge of caring for school students everywhere. They help improve attendance, enforce federal law, help staff health, and improve academic performance. School nurses don’t always get the recognition they deserve.
World Maths Day - Since Pythagoreans created the word “mathematics” in the 6th century BC, numbers have been a beneficial and challenging part of life. Math is believed by many people to be one of the hardest subjects to achieve because of its strictness in needing correct answers, its abstract concepts, and the overall stress involved in succeeding. For those who struggle with math, World Maths Day is a chance to take your skills to the test, practice math skills, and get involved in a worldwide event that celebrates the history of math to improve the lives of students, parents, and teachers everywhere.

Cinco de Mayo 2019
One month and one day away from my due date today. June 6th, doctors say she’ll be here. It’s been awhile since we been out together. I been busy working and running around trying to make ends meet. And with the boys it’s really hard to just go out and enjoy a nice outing. I decided that it would be nice to go watch Endgame since we had sometime to ourselves today. Before going to see the movie we stop to get something to eat. You don’t like pho but there’s hogs next door. We end up eating separately. I finish my meal and find you already in the car. You ask me for hand sanitizer and unfortunately I don’t have any for you. You get really angry. Then again it seemed like you were angry already. We get to the movies parking lot. We barely parked and you’re frustrated. But then again, you’re always angry or frustrated with me. We park and I start to giggle. You’re mad that I’m giggling. Honestly I was giggling because being 8 months pregnant and having to walk my fatass to the movies was funny to me. But you didn’t ask why I was giggling. Your response to my giggles was for me to shut the fuck cause I’m fucken annoying. Your exact words, “stfu, you’re fucken annoying.” I asked you if you just wanted to go home. You didn’t care. I asked you what I did to you. I didn’t even do anything to you. I ended up telling you we should just go home. Which ended up making you more mad and you say I wasted your time. But really, why would you want to waste anytime with me if I was already annoying you? We end up at home. I go out alone and you go out. I ended up going to watch Endgame alone. Which was probably the best thing I’ve done in a long time. I cried really hard and laughed really hard. Not sure if the movie was really good because I was an emotional wreck already. But it was nice to just go out and enjoy myself. It’s been a long time that I’ve walked this road with you. The older I get with you, the more I’m starting to see that I’ll be watching movies alone. You’ll never love me like I love you,3000. #iloveyou3000#imstupid#hopingtowin#justonetime#ilose14milliontimes#venting#lifeevents#cincodemayo#tiredoflosing

NOLADrinks Show – 4-19-19 – BBQ and Hogs for the Cause at Blue Oak BBQ
On this edition of The NOLADrinks Show with Bryan Dias, we’re talking grilling and smoking! We’re at Blue Oak BBQ chatting with proprietors Phil Moseley and Ronnie Evans. Importantly, we also talk about a great charity event and organization, Hogs for the Cause. Co-founder Becker Hall join us as well.

NOLADrinks Show – 4-19-19 – BBQ and Hogs for the Cause at Blue Oak BBQ
We start things off letting you know about this week’s show. We also tell you about next week’s show where we will be talking about the festival scene, economy, and cultural import in New Orleans.
Then, we’re off to the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans to Blue Oak BBQ. Owners Phil Moseley and Ronnie Evans join us along with Becker Hall, co-founder of Hogs for the Cause. “Hogs” recently had their signature event that raised money for families suffering from pediatric brain cancer. The event, which features over 90 BBQ teams, great drinks and food, and loads of live music, raises well-over a million dollars each year for the charity.
We discuss the event, of which Blue Oak is a big supporter, and Becker lets us know about some of the results, how the works, and how it has grown after just completing its eleventh year. He also announces the dates for next year’s event.
Also, much of our conversation centers around discussing BBQ. Unlike certain places around the US, there really isn’t a synonymous “New Orleans style.” In fact, in some ways the BBQ culture is somewhat nascent around these parts with the growth in the number of commercial establishments coming in recent years. Of course, we have boucherie and cochon-de-lait that are prominent in the South Louisiana region, that’s found in and around the city and has had significant influence here. And, let’s not forget our predilection for tailgates and backyard parties!
Pictured above – A Delicious BBQ sampler from Blue Oak BBQ in New Orleans.
Phil and Ronnie talk about their popular spot and how they approach their cuisine. In many cases, they draw from various regions and styles with a good dose of local culinary influence.
All three guys stick around for our podcast-only portion of the show – “Another Shot with NOLADrinks” -where we continue the chat. We break down some of the more noted BBQ styles found around the country.
We close things out with our “Parting Shot” with some thoughts on Cinco de Mayo.
The map below shows the location of Blue Oak BBQ. You can subscribe to, stream, and download The NOLADrinks Show podcast using the links and player at the top of the post!
Cheers, You All!

#MerMay ¡Pequena Sirena Sombrero de Baile! Last year for Cinco de Mayo I drew a cute mermaid couple, a betta fish dancer and mariachi sting ray dancing the jarabetapatio. This year I thought it would be cute to do little sirenas and sirenos dancing the hat dance featuring the same sea slug from last year as a somberaro! The sirenos are baby skates and the sirenas are baby scorpion fish. Also the dancing sargasum crab and playing the hog fish can be found in the gulf of mexico! ~ ~ #characterdesign #mermay2019 #mexico #mermaid #dancing #kids #illustration #underthesea #sirena #spanish #babyfish #crab #hogfish #betta #stingray #hatdance #fiesta #artchallenge #artistoninstagram #instaartist #vivalatina #cincodemayo #ninos #ninas #cute @tombancroft1 https://www.instagram.com/p/BxJEgMfFjOO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=n6uwddg6tokf
