Cocker spaniel Chester was rescued by the RSPCA
A puppy dumped on the roadside in a cage at four months old has joined Surrey Police as a trained sniffer dog.
Chester the cocker spaniel was rescued by the RSPCA after he was found by a member of the public abandoned in a metal crate with five other puppies on a grass verge in Hersden, near Canterbury, in January.

The four cocker spaniels and two terrier crossbreed puppies were thought to have been abandoned after having passed the age when they are most marketable.
RSPCA inspector Clive Hopwood said: “It’s very possible these puppies were abandoned by a breeder. We believe these puppies may have failed to sell so they were abandoned having passed their ‘cute’ stage when they’re most marketable and most valuable.”
It quickly became apparent that Chester had “huge energy levels”, making it difficult for the RSPCA to rehome him, until volunteer fosterers noticed he had a real drive for “searching and sniffing things out”.
Sarah Piggott, who works for the RSPCA and fostered Chester, said: “No amount of walking or enrichment seemed to exhaust him.
“I realised he had a real drive for searching and sniffing things out when he’d easily find other dogs’ lost tennis balls on walks and kept bringing them to me.”

Tara Luxford, who adopted Chester’s brother, Bertie, said Chester was “always destined” to join the police to become a sniffer dog.
“I remember one day we were walking them together and Bertie had lost his new toy in a bush and we couldn’t reach it,” Ms Luxford said.
“We told Chester to ‘find it’ and he went straight into the bush and got it back for Bertie.
“He was always destined to be a sniffer dog.”
In March, Chester was taken in by Surrey Police and began the process of training to become a sniffer dog with a special foster family.
Ms Piggott said she was “so proud” of her former foster puppy and added she is “thrilled” he has finally been rehomed.
“Chester has done really well and caught up to the other puppies who were bred to be sniffer dogs and started their training before him,” Ms Piggott said.
“I’m so proud of him and I’m thrilled that he’s found a home where he can do what he loves every day while being well looked after.”
Tumblr media
PD Chester has been deployed across Surrey and Sussex to support the police alongside his handler PC Kim Hackett (RSPCA/PA)
After completing a six-week intensive training course, PD Chester became a licensed police sniffer dog in October and he was celebrated at a ceremony at Surrey Police HQ.
The “amazing” pup has now been deployed across Surrey and Sussex to support the police alongside his handler PC Kim Hackett.
Surrey Police operational and dog school manager Geoff Wiltshire said: “Chester has been amazing since he arrived with us.
“He has gone from strength to strength and has done really well to pass his digital detection course.
“Our standards are very high and he has proven himself to have all the necessary qualities to succeed in this important role.
“His handler, Kim, has a great bond with him and we look forward to seeing some operational results from this new team.”

I’LL SAY SHE DOES
1920
Tumblr media
I’ll Say She Does (formerly titled Dodo) is a musical by Avery Hopwood with music and lyrics by B.G. DeSylva. It was originally produced by A.H. Woods, George Marshall, and Avery Hopwood, with staging by Edward Royce. It featured Roland Young, Juliette Day, and Ernest Glendenning.
The story concerns Mrs. Warren, a young wife dubbed ‘Dodo’ by her husband. She is fond of keeping a string of male admirers at her command. Her husband Herb demands she devote herself to him alone. She half agrees, and employs her old friend Bobo Brown, recently returned from China, to invite her to his apartment for supper. Brown is told to report Mrs. Warren’s actions. Brown is engaged to Angie Martin, and wants to cancel the supper to spend time with her. But Dodo will not be deterred, and goes to his apartment anyway.
One of Dodo’s admirer’s is Dr. Elliott, who’s wife believes the good doctor is planning to rendezvous with her at Brown’s apartment. Brown suspects she is a blackmailer and a string of misunderstandings ensues.
Tumblr media
The book was based on Avery Hopwood’s 1916 play Our Little Wife, which played on Broadway at the Harris Theatre for 41 performances. It was filmed in 1918. The musical was initially titled Dodo.
Tumblr media
The musical was inspired by the 1918 song “I’ll Say She Does” sung by Al Jolson in the musical Sinbad, DeSylva’s first Broadway outing. Also credited as authors were Gus Kahn and Jolson. Jolson recorded the song in 1919.
Tumblr media
Coincidentally, in addition to the hit song, there was also an unrelated theatrical vaudeville titled I’ll Say She Does featuring Mary Maxfield. It played theatres in Indiana at the same time as the musical which was then still titled Dodo. One can only guess what was meant by giving away a live baby!
Tumblr media
Closer to home, there was yet another theatrical attraction titled “I’ll Say She Does.” This one starring ‘the funniest man alive’ Bobby Ott. It was promised that he would remove his make-up in full view of the audience. The Saturday night performance would be followed by a fashion show and the lucky ladies in the audience would receive ‘cutie dolls’ from Ott. This ‘musical comedy’ (again unrelated to Hopwood’s) was playing in Mount Carmel PA on April 29 & 30, 1920.
Tumblr media
The production premiered under the title Dodo on April 25, 1920 at Poli’s in Washington, DC. From there it went on to Wilmington's Playhouse, where its name was officially changed to I’ll Say She Does. May 5, 1920, it did one night at Rajah Theatre in West Reading PA.
Tumblr media
The musical played the Globe Theatre (formerly the Cort) on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City on May 6, 1920.  It featured the ‘smartest girls in the world’. The Atlantic City Press reviewed it as “Very Snappy.”
Tumblr media
Unusually for Atlantic City, the split week engagement was extended, adding three more performances at the Globe.
Tumblr media
The musical closed May 22, 1920 in Boston at the Shubert Theatre. Apparently being smart was not working, so the chorus removed their corsets.
“As a musical comedy it is sadly wanting. ‘I’ll Say She Does’ simply fails to ‘get across’. Mr. B.G. DeSylva’s ... lyrics are awful.” ~ FLETCHER SMITH, THE HARVARD MAGAZINE
On May 22, 1920, the musical closed shop for good in Boston, without ever gracing the Broadway stage. The title, however, lived on.

Random roadside stop in Hopwood, PA. This was a roadside museum about some historic stone chimneys that were made with bricks from a brick press, which was a new technology at the time. The chimneys were salvaged from some kind of disaster (fire?) and preserved for historical appreciation, if i recall correctly. I think I was too preoccupied with the horse replicas (and trying not to freeze to death) to remember the full story. We also have specialty in helping women before, during and after pregnancy with special issues pertaining to the health of the child. Healthy Beginnings and Pregnancy Care: In the communities near our offices in Uniontown and Connellsville there sometimes are situations which require special medical attention, often as quickly as possible. Some of these situations include:    Those who have had pregnancy complication experiences previously    First-time mothers who have a family history of difficult pregnancies, or if your family pregnancy history is unknown    Expectant mothers who decide to participate in higher-risk physical activities such as high-exertion exercising, jobs requiring intense manual labor, etc.    Expectant mothers who have been using any form of narcotic drug up to (and possibly even during) the early stages of pregnancy We are unique in being a part of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Healthy Beginnings program as we provide in both offices one-on-one instruction as well as home visiting nurse care for teaching, outreach, and preparation.  This unique program was created specifically for communities like ours and we are the only provider in the region. Regarding the last item, this can be a difficult situation on its own let alone with a baby on the way. Nonetheless, any caring medical professional would urge an expectant mother with a narcotic drug history (prescribed or not) to seek qualified medical care as soon as possible. Some of these drugs could include:    Oxycodone    Oxycontin    MS contin    Percocet    Vicodin    Heroin    Morphine    Codeine    Dilaudid    Duragesic (Fentanyl) Many of the warnings which come with these drugs indicate that they should not be taken prior to or during pregnancy. Some even indicate that they should not be taken during the breastfeeding period due to high risks to the infant. Please understand that if you, or someone you know, is in any high-risk pregnancy situation that they should seek qualified medical care quickly. Often, our patients are not aware of all of the direct or indirect risks they face prior to talking with us. We understand the sensitive nature of high-risk pregnancy care, and we always aim toward providing our patients with care for both the mother and the baby.

Hopwood, PA, is a sleepy town far away or whatever from Pittsburgh where I spent a few weeks each summer visiting our grandparents. A 6 hour drive from Dearborn, which in and of itself seems to be a world away from everyone else, but I digress. Part of my growing up happened in the cornfields in the backyard and I distinctly recall one particularly boring day staring into the ceiling lamp at age 15, prematurely ruminating over who I was going to be at 25 and how I was going to get there. And so, in my adolescent restlessness, I downloaded Stanford’s Psychology 101 lectures, hoping that through the magic of Freud and Jung and Skinner that I was going to learn something about myself and help secure the future for myself that I so fervently wanted. As 23 year old me would have expected for any 15 year old I have counseled or comforted so far, everything went completely over my head, and yet, I was still fascinated. And thus, my 10 year plan went into effect.
...
I exist forever as a product of the Montessori method. I grew from childhood into adolescence practicing independence and collaboration, self guided research, and learning how to teach others to teach themselves. I exist in the Cranbrook natatorium, the way that spring time sunlight floods the Kingswood art room in the afternoons, and in the only Latin classroom on campus that I called home for 4 years. I exist as the proud daughter of an immigrant whose culture is confined to our Serbian Christian Orthodox churches, living rooms of our relatives, and the now separated countries of Yugoslavia
I am quite sure that there will never be another me: another Montessori educated, Cranbrook graduate, College of Charleston swimming and diving team member, Wheaton College Swimming and Diving team member, first generation Montenegrin American from Dearborn Heights, MI. My life has never been straight and narrow, it has never fit the confines of what a normal trajectory is supposed to look like. I wanted harmony, stability, and predictability. Instead, I was too often faced with discord and a feeling that can only be described as slightly off, not quite right. I am American and I also carry my family and our culture with me.
(idk if i go the identity route or not lol ugh)
When I decided to attend the College of Charleston on a Division 1 swimming scholarship, I understood that the hours I would put in at practice would be similar to the hours I would have to dedicate to academics. My days were spent in the classroom, pool, library, and with my team. These individuals made up an amazing family that I could call home wherever we were, whether it be watching football games on Sundays, on the road to away meets, or at 5:45 AM lined up behind our lanes, hesitant to dive in. The end of my freshman year was met with a 3.7 GPA and personal best times during the swim season. I entered my sophomore year confidently, excited to be in Charleston after a summer spent at home in Michigan where I found myself missing my sport, school, and second family.I could see my next three years at Charleston perfectly laid out in front of me: three more years of swimming; Psychology BS with a Russian minor; active member of the Kappa Delta sorority; graduating on time with my teammates by my side; then seamlessly making my way to grad school with immense pride for myself and my school. However, this was not meant to be. Exact plans never seem to unfold the way I expect them to, even if I take every cautiously predetermined step to ensure it. In October of my sophomore year, we received the news that our Athletic Director and President had decided to permanently suspend the swim team. We did absolutely everything we could to save our sport, cause, and family, however, our efforts were not successful. February 28, 2015 was the last day the College of Charleston had a swim team. The following six months contained some of the most difficult days and weeks of my life. I found myself at the edge of a sort of precipice, with the same hesitation and dread as I had during a 5:45 AM practice, seeing the immense distance I would have to go to find security and hope within myself. I knew If I stayed at College of Charleston, I would drown; I could not thrive there without swimming. Leaving and admitting I had been drowning in the very place I believed I could call home was my only option.
