one distinct thing about growing up ukrainian is that you get to learn A LOT of folk tales & myths from a young age. when i was around 9 years old, i went to ride horses with my family. the place itself was quite remote from the city and was located on a hill; down the hill there was a railway road and then, right after it, a forest. at some point my mother & her friend, who took us there, were both busy doing their stuff, and, as i had nothing better to do, my eyes wandered around and i saw a completely naked woman coming out from the forest. i got so scared as i assumed it was probably one of the mavka's, the humanized forest spirits, or a witch. anyway, i asked my brother whether he also saw her - she only showed up for an instant, then came back to the woods - and he nodded, confirming that she was, indeed, very real. at least for the both of us; the grown ups hadn't seen anything.

i still have no idea who that woman was or what was she doing naked in the woods, but i will keep this utterly odd and mystical memory locked in my heart forever. i remember her beauty, her greek statue-like curves, her shiny ginger brown hair and the confused look in her eyes..
