MY SCHOOL PRESIDENT – REPRESENTATION MATTERS

Maybe it's just my own wishful thinking, and maybe it's too early to tell for sure (though I don't think so), but remembering what Producer Aof, Director Au and the rest of the team did with Bad Buddy – it looks like the MSP team is giving a positive shout-out to the spectrum, even while anchoring the series firmly within the BL genre.

We have–

TinnGun – gay

SoundWin – gay, though Win may be bi/pan

TiwPor – likely gay

YoNook – straight

And Ep.7 suggests Pat may be straight/bi/pan but he comes across as more ace or arrow (to me at least).

And FINALLY the lesbians get a mention! 😍

I'm just hoping they give us a trans character somewhere too – oh WAIT a goshdang hot Bangkok minute, they already did! 😍

The role of the producer at GMM Music in Ep.5 was played by actor and host Golf Kittipat Chalaragse, who openly identifies as a transgender woman.

It's important to note that she is treated by the boys with utmost respect in her one scene, and also that she broke disappointing news to Gun (not being shortlisted for signing despite his obvious talent) with kindness and empathy.

This quietly positive portrayal of a trans character in a position of influence is important for all the trans kids out there who might be watching this. (And yes, I'm aware that Golf's character in the show is not specifically identified as trans, but given her fame in Thailand I think most Thai viewers would see her as such.)

Bearing in mind that My School President is a lightly-crafted Thai-style High School Musical taking place in a QL universe, I believe that it is still carrying the sense of mission previous (more strident) Thai QL dramas have been sounding – The Eclipse, Not Me, and even Bad Buddy come to mind.

As with most other QL series, no one is treated as being less than anybody else based on gender or sexuality. So the boys take their Ep.6 music video – about the awkwardness of being in love while in the friendzone – happily into BL territory, free from any fear of societal judgement.

Previous dramas that did this (to the best of my memory) had an older target demographic, but this one is sending out a message of hope and normalization to a younger audience that it's OK if your sexuality or gender isn't society's perceived norm.

And to those who fit within the perceived norm as well, there is also the messaging that the trials and tribulations of your queer friends, family and compatriots have a lot in common with the dramas of your cishet lives too – so maybe it's time to stop othering anybody for being a little bit (or even a lot) different. (This is ultimately the message behind the switch from straight couples to BL ones in the Ep.6 music video, and also the BL switch in Bad Buddy's Kwan-Riam musical.)

It's not the first time a BL has been sending out messages geared to bolster queer self-esteem and normalization, but it's the first high school one in recent memory that seems to be radiating positivity all around, and hopefully its message will land with the younger set.

Heartstopper may already have done this, and its finished product is perhaps a bit more realistically grounded and polished, but that show was restricted to a smaller, paying and arguably older audience on Netflix.

I cannot begin to emphasize how important it is that My School President and its messages of positive self-worth are beamed free-of-charge to LGBTQ+ teens all over the world, including places where it might not even be safe to be openly LGBTQ+.

My School President may be going all out to entertain (and it does), but beneath the froth and fluff it's still doing something. With the team behind it I wouldn't have expected anything less. And I'm so glad they're at it still. 💖 👍

Ok...I'm just starting to process the behind the scenes of LITA with Boss and Noeul. Besides confirming the full scale horniness those two are able to tap into, apparently on demand and in front of a crowd, I thought it also gives us even more insight into their genuine

We've seen them quite a bit -- at events and interviews and through social media. But those were largely looking back, many of them after the show and their popularity had taken off. These are in the moment -- when it's all still completely new and unsure. And we see how they literally clung to each other during this process. How they are so sweet and cuddly. How Noeul is nuzzling into Boss's (naked) chest or resting his chin on his shoulder or how Boss is always (literally) holding onto or touching Noeul. It's clear how comfortable they are with each other -- and how much comfort they give to each other. And I know it's not unusual for actors to be close, especially when doing a project like this. But I think it reinforces how these two are different and how their genuine closeness is really the foundation of their chemistry. (And it probably speaks to why they sit half naked, on top of each other, in a room full of crew, and focus on each other and how to make it feel real (or, as Boss said, "like art"). Anyway, I just think that it's nice that in the same time we see the hot we also see the sweet.

Hey anon! I do agree that I think BossNoeul are probably great friends and it's great to see how comfortable they are with each other. It's nice to see them have fun while filming and not feeling too much pressure to perform better. It's always a plus when the crew tells them they are doing too much and to pull it back lol. The more comfortable the actors are with each other the better their body language as a couple reads across on screen. Like they do a lot of small physical interactions on screen that seem minimal but makes their relationship feel more real on camera. BossNoeul have insane chemistry.

We can also thank the workshops for this. Typically with Thai BLs the actors are sent to workshops before filming so they can become comfortable with each other and around the people filming them. A lot of times at these workshops they work a ton on their physical chemistry and closeness.

They learn to behave like couples and learn more about their characters mannerisms and how they're supposed to be with each other and the actors also build a bond and hopefully friendship in the process. Sometimes they just spend time laying on each other, or cuddling, or holding hands, and of course kissing.

I've seen sippets of workshops with MileApo, MewGulf, ZaintSee, and BounPrem and that's what a lot of the videos show. The workshops help get rid of the anxiety and stress and fear of working intimately with a partner before actual filming starts so they perform better together because they're already familiar with each other.

2023 Top BL Fanmeets

In 2023, I was able to continue my international bl fan ways and I had a lot of fun going to several events and getting to meet and greet and re-meet and re-greet some of my absolute favorites. I am definitely hitting picture limit with this one but here are my top bl fanmeets and whatnots

1. My School President Prom Night

Ok, MSP definitely was one of my most pleasant bl surprises of the year. I only started the show because Mark Pakin was in it but the earnestness and charm completely had me hooked, although I still sometimes hear "Hot Wave" in my head and snicker. When the live show was announced, I wanted to go and this event was a trial and tribulation to get a ticket for. Second to PP's for how much I overpaid because of 3rd party ticketers and this one had the unique galling factor that my reseller would only sell me 2 tickets and not one. So Day 1, I arrive, get my goodies and take my seat. The show starts and I was thoroughly impressed by the show. These kids put on a hell of a show and I have been to somewhere around 10 GMMTV live concerts and MSP was easily the best one. And because I ended up with two tickets it meant I got 2 photos with the cast. So after I took my first one, the staff moved me to the end of the photo line for my second one. In the immediate moment, I thought this was really inefficient and an inconvience to me because the goodbye sessions for these events are long. LONG. VERY, VERY LONG. But me going through twice and being the last fan to get a picture with the cast meant that when the boys saw me again they knew the fan portion was over, so they were so excited and energized to see me again and they laughed after I said now we could all go home. My two tickets were for Day 1 but I was still in Bangkok for Day 2 but didn't wanna go sit in the venue again but still wanted to hear it, so I bought a virtual ticket for Day 2 and I got the ticket with a raffle chance to win a video call with a ship from the show. I bought 2, one for MarkFord and one for Gem4th and I ended up winning the video call with MarkFord, so I was hella elated. Fast forward a month or so and I'm sitting in a zoom lobby for like half an hour and then suddenly I get moved into a zoom room and I see Mark and Ford and then they see me and have a big reaction and are exclaiming something but I hadn't connected to the audio yet but when I do they're like "it's you again!" and the commotion causes Gemini to come over and he sees me and goes roughly "hey bro, I remember you bro, I love you bro!" and then I have one of the fastest minutes of my life chatting with more Ford because of his comfort with English but it was great and I wore a sleeveless sweater vest and they commented on it and I said I was repping TwiPor and it was really great moment. So with both a fucking really great concert, a funny meet and greet/photo op story, and a bonus video call with the actor that got me into the show, MSP Prom Night takes my very coveted number 1 BL fanevent of 2023. Also! This happened in the spring and for Beluca Manila (winter) fans there recognized me from my last picture with the group and the boys energy at my reappearance. Really cute.

2. PP Krit ~ Lit and Glitter

My number 2 favorite show of the year was PP's first solo show Lit and Glitter. I Told Sunset About You is still my favorite Thai series and a good number of the staff at Cape Pawna Resort (Oh-Aew's house) know me by name and sight because everytime I got to Thailand, I work in a trip to Phuket. My very first BL fanevent ever was BKPP's Last Twilight in the Park. So when I saw the announcement of PP's first solo concert, this was half my anchor event for my spring trip. I can't remember if this was announced before My Beautiful Man Eternal but either way, I wanted to go real bad. It was another trial and tribulation to get a ticket for PP's show and............................ it was so damn difficult. Really fucking difficult. The scammers were out and tried very hard to deceive me but I perserved and found what I hoped was a legit seller and ended up with tickets to both nights of PP's show. Lit and Glitter was my first Thai show of that trip and it rivals MSP Prom Night for highest production value and budget (I presume). One of my irl bl besties is also a huge fan, so I got merch for us both and one of my newly made bl twitter friends who was instrumental in getting me connected to a legit reseller ended up sick and not being able to go so I got her merch as well. PP's show was amazing. It was fun, it was cunty, Billkin sang Alicia Keys with him and they both cried their way through their duets and I was tearing up too. I met a lot of fans and had some great conversations with people. It was a whole ass vibe. I luckily ended up being the first fan to get a picture with PP for the goodbye session, so I got a little more time on stage with him while they were finalizing the camera and whatnots. I lived in Hollywood/LA for a few years and that coupled with my travels and adventures I have been fortunate enough to meet many celebs I admire and people I find hella fucking attractive. Having around 1 minute of eye contact and smiles and polite conversation with PP Krit was easily a top 3 celeb moment of my life. The bambi eyes and just aura of that beautiful human being! Incredible. If I didn't luck my way into that vid call with MarkFord, this would be my number 1. It was an amazing show and the meet and greeting with PP was a true fucking delight. A friend I made in line was kind enough to take a video of my meet and greet and it's something I show all the damn time.

3. Gun and Friends events aka GMMTV Fanday in Osaka, Beluca Manila, and Starlympics

Ok so like, Gun is literally my number 1 GMMTV actor and this year I've gotten to see him many times and have been blessed to have so many little moments and conversations and jokes and smiles and amazing times, it's been so fucking incredible. Anytime I go to an event with Gun, it always becomes Gun (and maybe another person) and friends because Gun is my number 1. BUT I have always said at least "hi/hello/nice to see ya (again)" to Off and he and I have had some fun jokes too at my many appearances at their events. My number 2 GMMTV actor is Tay Tawan so when they started doing this Beluca (OffGun TayNew joint collab concert series) series, it was definitely on my radar and I was happy to see some shows were scheduled when I was already wanting to be back in Asia and I just keep having great moments with them. Last year, I went to Love Out Loud Fest and that was the first time I saw them in person on stage (along with BrightWin and KristSingto) but this year I got to get meet and greet and have hi touches and convos with Gun and Tay (and New and Off). Started my bl fan year with Gun, Mix, and friends in Osaka and ended my bl fan year with Gun, Tay, and friends in Manila. So like I've won as a Gun fan. And damn it all to hell, if Tay Tawan isn't a troll and tease. I ended up with 3 pictures/hi touches at Beluca Manila and after my first walk through, Tay would always make some joke at me and also laugh because I kept hoping I'd be in front of Gun and would say as much in jest to him as I ended up in front of him/Tay twice. OffGun and TayNew are veterans at fanmeets and so professional yet entirely engaging and fun to be around. Beluca in Manila was definitely the hypest crowd and best emceed bl event I've ever been to - absolute biggest shout out to Mela Habijan for being the best fucking host, she kept the energy up and also told the crowd (politely) to stfu at times so we could all hear the answers and translations [sidenote: these events can be so wild and chaotic and overwhelming at times, so literally it was incredible and refreshing to have an emcee who could keep that energy high and focused and occassionally quelled without ruining/harshing the vibes, masterful!]. Also also, shout out to @seinehsh for giving me blessing to use their incredible GramBlack fanart. I printed it out for my first time meeting Gun. I wish I could have gotten it signed but so far none of my Gun events have had the opportunity for a signing. With these events, so much of my fun and moments come from just utterly chance encounters, like me being in the exact right position to get an extra conversation or chat in crossing while the actors are being moved around. Or my position in line letting be right next to Gun (Osaka) or near enough to Gun for some chats (Manila). Now, I do have tickets for the next Beluca show in Taipei and this week they announced a Gun solo show which shouldfit in my schedule but I need to get a visa (actually lemme start the application today lol). So hopefully I will luck my way into more amazing memories with my number 1 and number 2 gmmtv actors. When talking with fans at these events, I was called "the American" and "the Gun fanboy" - really cute. And at Beluca Manila, fans recognized me from MSP Prom night 9 months prior.

4. About Us But Not About Us movie screening

Gameboys is what got me into BLs (and somewhat back on tumblr/twitter) and my love and devotion for Gameboys, The IdeaFirst Company, and specifially Elijah and Kokoy are so damn deep. Gameboys is what inspired my first international trip and my luck and opportunities have gone into overdrive when it comes Gameboys and Elijah and Kokoy. Last year, I unexpectedly got to meet Elijah when he came to a screening for his Blue Room movie (picture on my shirt) and that had so many amazing moments and lead to the absolutely wildest week of my life. Also the Gameboys and Elijah and Kokoy fanclubs have been really good to me and helped me a lot when it comes to getting invited or a heads up about these events. I've been able to meet and have really lovely conversations with Elijah and his parents so when I arrived to the theater for the About Us screening, they saw me over the crowd (I'm tall) then Elijah and his parents had the funniest reactions to my shirt. It was so cool and touching they remembered me and we always talk like we're dear friends and it's just really awesome. Gameboys and Elijah and Kokoy are just my whole ass heart and anytime I get to see Elijah, it's the coming home feeling. My lil pogi best actor. <3

5. KaownahTurbo DP DANCE STUDIO “HELLO & GOODBYE charity showcase 2023”

My other "fan luck pushed to the max" actors are Kaownah and Turbo. These two have been so kind to me and their fanclubs have been amazing and their management staff have been amazing to me. It's just incredible. I've had so many lengthy and meaningful conversations with them, it's astonishing to me. Them remembering me by face, sure, I stand out at these events, but they remembered my name unprompted and during one of the after fanevents, they specifically looked around and asked for me by name because they didn't want me to get left out of a group photo. Like these are my dudes and we always have a good time when we chat. Turbo did also give me a bit of a teaser after this event about The Campfire/My Universe and that was cool getting a lil tea from an actor directly.

Honorable mentions and one more picture because I'm at picture upload limit:

SantaEarth:

I saw them twice this year and the second time I was able to stay focused and have a cool chat with Earth and tell him how much him being out and open meant to me as a queer fan and it was really touching. I also told him I hope his next character is happy and he said "yes, finally I got it" so there will be at least one not traumatized character for him - we'll see how true that ends up being. And Santa, I told him I can't wait to see him as a vampire and he laughed and thanked me.

FirstKhaotung - I saw them in Brazil. Made some great friends. Went with my irl bl bestie and that was a lot of fun having company to witness all these shenanigans energy of a bl fanmeet. I asked First his favorite Beyonce song and he said Single Ladies and I told Khao the voices in my head say he's really cute too and First laughed hard and Khao laughed and got so shy, it was super endearing.

My Beautiful Man s2/eternal - so these "events" were so random and not necessarily fan events. The one opportunity I had for a fan meeting with Yusei, I didn't win. I did structure my spring trip around seeing the movie and the special edit and I did end up winning a raffle to go to a special themed dinnner for the movie at a really cool cafe. And it was my first time in Tokyo proper and I went to a lot of the filming sites for the show.

Starlympics - so I mentioned Starlympic above with Gun and in addition to him, I did get to see what felt like the full might and breadth of the GMMTV bl and gl actor armada. Highlights would be: seeing Neo and Mond and Great and Ohm in person for the first time, watching some questionably athletic people try to be athletic to varying degrees of success, watching some athletic people go super try hard mode (Neo and Fourth), watching what appeared to be some truly uninterested people do their mandatory miminum effort to say they participated (Gun and Mix and KhaoFirst), just observing a lot of the actors chill and hang out with their work friends. And then it was like a 3 hour music medley from basically everyone. Starlympics was definitely a showcase of "GMMTV can field a literal army so who can challenge us." Oh and yeah, watching Tay do his best to not get in Mark's way during the Badminton match, you better believe I wanna tease him about it in Taipei next weekend.

Big Dragon Ep 3 Stray Thoughts

When we last left the Shitty Boys, they were at a pool party with heavy pours, and I questioned the decision to allow so much glass near a pool. For the first time in a while, we reflected on the potential physical realities of overaggressive anal intercourse, and I lamented that BL rarely explores m/m intimacy beyond penetrative sex.

Yes, give us the pool shot again.

For all that I'm struggling a bit with this show, I do want to praise the visual production values from Star Hunter. This show has been very visually pleasing and easy on the eyes. There was a period in 2020 where everything was way too bright and white.

I forgot Mangkorn looked like a lifeguard.

I feel like if he was serious about destroying the phone, he'd microwave it. Also, in the age of cloud storage, the video is definitely not stored on the phone.

I think I like that the show ended that scene on a joke. I'm also glad that we have more shows presenting fellatio as a quickly-accessible form of m/m pleasure.

So Mangkorn runs off to buy noodles from a place right near Yai's condo? I mean it's nice since Yai is dealing with discomfort, but it still reads a bit weird to me.

I get that this scene is meant to show them contemplating each other, but I really hope it didn't take Yai hours to eat noodles in the same spot while Mangkorn was working.

I enjoyed Da. Hopefully we see her again.

The communication between Yai and his guards leaves much to be desired.

Another show with ghosts? Well, she's using her powers for good. I wonder how many points that cost her.

180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us Ep 3 Thoughts

I'm still not over the architectural bars in the middle of In's room.

Wang is attractive in a way that feels unusual for Thai dramas I'm used to.

The confidence in the ritualistic way In made that coffee was kinda hot.

The flirting over coffee and speaking between the lines brought me back to 1000 Stars for a moment. It's kinda interesting that Coffee Melody hasn't hit this level of sexual tension over coffee.

It's absolutely captivating watching a show from Thailand where the cinematography feels intentional the entire time. The conversation over breakfast is mostly just A-B cuts, but putting In and Sawimol in one frame highlights the choices they've made as adults that separates them from Wang. Going to the wide shot of the table highlights the gulf between both parties. Then, as soon as Sawimol exits, the two men are reaching across that Gulf over shared purpose. Finally, the overhead shot and pan indicates that they've reached a private accord. I'm gonna lose it.

I think I am glad that Wang apologized to his mom, even if the inherent codependency of their dynamic worries me. I think it's okay for Wang to disapprove of the dated nature of some of her work, but it was indeed incredibly rude for him to deride her the way he did.

In explaining that he doesn't cry by avoiding things that make him sad...while standing next to the cage...is just going to drive me insane. The way he walked away from Wang to the desk frames him such that he retreats behind the bars.

I'm not sure Wang even knows what he wants from In.

I liked the bridge-buiding montage. It seems like Wang did not get much of an experience he enjoyed at his boarding school, so there was probably something enjoyable masculine about the labor.

These two are unsubtle about the way they discuss risk taking. In is set in his reserve, and Wang is firmly opposed.

Oh lord here the Thai boys go again getting their whole pant legs wet around bathing.

In takes a glance, but always walks away from desire when it creeps up with Wang.

There were so many people hired for this surprise.

Oh my goodness I'm going to exit my corporeal form. If my family hired performers to do an almost interpretive dance as they sung happy birthday with a violinist before a guy with a globe-shaped cake exited a giant present box, I would probably just die right there.

This time, when describing the game, the A-B framing puts Wang on the bottom of the frame with his mom. Interesting that the last time we had this, In was presented as more equal. Wang may know what his mom is up to, but he's not really in control.

Man, the constant use of metaphor is something I've missed even in queer cinema. This show is a real treat for me.

Ah, we have a conceit to remove the mom from the story for a few days. Something LGBT is definitely going to happen.

Confirming that In and Siam we're intimate only brings up more questions, like why were they sorry it happened?

Man, this show is just so different from the usual fare. I enjoy BL immensely, but I am a sucker for this particular brand of queer melancholia tinged with hope and exploration.

I really am just so happy about the end of Minato’s Laundromat. Japan didn’t let us down on that one. We got a solid set of kisses, some great relief flirting, and a very tasteful double-confirmation about sating desires. I really couldn’t ask for more from this particular scenario.

Moreover, Shin never had to sublimate his feelings! He still gets to be a doctor, but he chose to do it near the person he values most.

Hell, even Asuka and Shuu get to work out their dynamic!

I’m in a good mood today.

My #1 post of 2022

I am a gay man sitting on his porch in a robe with a hot cup of coffee observing the behaviors of the winds and birds. I give a small sniff and say, "The lesbians are on the move."

I adjust my radio and listen to the advertisement for Gap one more time and nod sagely before sitting in my rocking chair. "Guess we'll need more plates," I muse before taking a sip as the cries of joy begin to rise in the distance.

Love in the Air

The BL Thai drama Love in the Air is definitely my favourite show of the year! It takes place in the world of illegal motorbike races (if you're a fan of Fast & Furious slash like me, this is perfect) and the world of architecture (that was actually interesting too).

Of course, now I want to learn the basics of Thai language, but it will have to wait until I'm at a more advanced level in Korean.

The first half of the drama is about Payu/Rain. They're my fave couple, they're so playful and loving. I also adore Saifha, Payu's twin, as he totally ships them. Here are the actors singing their opening theme.

The second half is about Prapai/Sky. There's a lot of hurt & comfort, which gave me so many feels. (Content warning: Sky used to be in an abusive relationship.) Here are the actors singing their opening theme.

You can watch the cut version of the 13 episodes legally and for free on YouTube and the extra scenes from the uncut version here on Tumblr. Viki is slowly uploading the uncut version, so it'll get easier to watch everything in a few weeks. There's also a special episode on Vimeo (the video game scene, hot damn!).

i saw your answer post and sameeee herreeee i stopped watching so many thai bls bc i got so bored and i needed something with more of a plot and not so bland lately okay but here is the real question what are you watching lately too i need a great recommendtation from you!!

Ahhh I'm so glad you agree!! I felt like most people didn't seem to find the storylines repetitive like I did, but honestly I was just getting so damn bored seeing the same "plot twists" over and over again haha.

I've honestly been playing a lot of video games lately because they have such unique storylines that I'm really enjoying, but I've been watching some great Korean series too. Currently I'm watching Again My Life because I love the main actor. The premise is very interesting, but the show is not as good as some of the others I've seen. Idk if you've watched any Korean series, but their crime shit is really top notch. But even their other stuff is so unique! If you'd like some recs, I'd recommend:

Flower of Evil: This is a show about a guy who is living a double life who married a detective who begins investigating a case which involves HIM. It's got romance! It's got drama! It's got the cutest father-daughter relationship this side of the pond!

Move to Heaven: This show is a drama with comedy elements about a boy with Autism whose dad dies and so his uncle who used to be in prison moves in to take care of him. It is SO good, and it makes you weep like a little bitch (or maybe that's just me)

Two Weeks: This is a show about a low level gangster who discovers he has a daughter who has cancer and he is a blood type match with her. She has to isolate for two weeks after which he will do an operation to transfer some of his blood marrow to her. However, he gets framed by his gangster boss for a crime he didn't commit and he has to be on the run for two weeks until he can go for the operation. I am also a sucker for the father-daughter relationship in this show (the guy who plays the dad is the same one in Flower of Evil and Again My Life so I'm biased ig cause I love him but he's legit so good), but honestly every single relationship is heart warming as fuck.

Psychopath Diary: This is a comedy crime drama where this guy basically get amnesia and thinks he's this famous serial killer. The concept is insane but they make it work and I love the main character, he's so stupid and so cute and I've claimed him for the aroaces

Signal: This is an older show so you might have seen it/heard of it? It's a show about a detective who finds a walkie talkie that allows him to talk to another detective in the past. It's so good. It's a little slow getting into but man is it exciting and moving and all three main characters are just the most loveable

Memories of the Alhambra: What would you do if your video games started taking over your life? That's the basic concept. Now imagine if YOU were like... a hot dude with dimples and a sword. A+ what more could you need from a show hgkjhfg

In terms of non-asian dramas, I watched Arcane which I just loved. It's an animated sci-fi/fantasy series and gosh, is it good. Highly recommend!

March 2021 Part 4

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs.

This is a LONG ONE, it’s been A WEEK everyone.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Lovely Writer Ep 5 - a little slow this week, but at least Gene finally flirted back, and very cute flirting it was, too. Also we got Aey’s motivation, background, and love interest. Thank goodness for that.

Brothers Ep 8 - still pants, what can I say? Clearly I am a BL masochist. Very embarrassing for everyone concerned.

1000 Stars Ep 9 - the conflict over Tian’s father was REALLY well done. The plot of this drama is excellent, the leads are great together, and yes I totally cried. What, you didn’t?

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Word of Honor (China) Ep 16-18 - big battle fighty fighty stabby stabby. Ep 17 switches to “this drama isn’t big enough for two chaotic-neutral godlings!” So what do they do? Drink together and bicker... A LOT. Then in Ep 18 we all get the dubious joy of really freaky puppets. (I HATE puppets.) Also how is China letting this be so SO VERY VERY GAY? Also, I wanna walk through the forest wearing a smanshy purple robe and waving a big fuck-off white fan around simply because I’m a pretentious fuss monger. And frankly, I feel like this is an achievable life goal for me.

We Best Love 2 (Taiwan) Ep 4 - not gonna lie, this is looking to be one of my top 3 BLs of 2021. It’s SO GOOD. Big bonus to this ep for treating stalker behavior like the mental illness it is and not as some dumb representation of enduring love.

The Most Peaceful Place is My Place (Vietnam) Ep 1 - finally dropped (find it under NƠI BÌNH YÊN NHẤT LÀ VỀ BÊN EM on O2′s channel). It’s got actors already comfortable with BL and looks pretty good so far. An angry tsundere uke reunited with his ex, a stoic chef, giving us lots of snap, crackle, and pop out the gate.

Dear Uranus (Taiwan GL) Ep 2 - I want to love it, but it is just moving too fast. There’s not enough character dev and then they’re throwing flashbacks in? It feels like a treatment rather than a show, and a rushed treatment at that. Bummer.

HIStory 4: Close To You (Taiwan) Ep 2 (AKA Ep 3-4) - let the cheesy popcorn continue! Idiot remains an idiot; ingenue remains an ice queen; nice gay guy remains nice and gay; obsessive stalker brother is getting ever more whackadoddle. Of course these last two have the best chemistry. (It’s caregiver codependency and the salvation trope. We got us a Leo/Fiat situation going on.) Plus lots of classic BL tropes because OF COURSE there are lots of tropes.

Occasionally, I am tempted to argue that shows like H4 or Cherry Magic or Ossan’s Love aren’t technically BL because of the office setting and age of the protags - but then they all behave like high school students anyway, so *shrug*

Stand Alones

Cute little Taiwanese micro BL Friend or Lover dropped, about bisexual realization within a friendship group. Normally these are too short for me, but this one did pretty good with its 15 minutes of charm, plus it’s abad boy + shy softy pairing.

Breaking News - Thai BL

Fish Upon the Sky released its actual trailer. The upside-down kiss is gone, which makes everyone sad, and it seems far less rivals to lovers than the first iteration, which makes ME sad. But it still looks good and a more classic BL than GMMTV has given us in a while. New trailer focused more on the makeover trope and they’ve upped Mix’s role (the object of everyone’s affection) now that he’s proved himself. (Or they are using him more to carry the trailer since he has a fan base form 1k*). Starts April 9 on GMMTV in 1K*’s time slot, probably with a 10 ep run.

2gether the movie is apparently coming April 22 to Thai theaters. F4 Thailand must be having issues or GMMTV just wants to milk the BrightWin cash cow. It’s rumored to be a combination of 2gehter + Still 2gether with some extra scenes and ending. Also, one assumes a lot will be cut out, if it’s movie length.

Call It What You Want released its updated trailer. If anything, it looks more scary than before. What are we in for? April 9th.

Nitiman got a release date, May 7 on One31.

I Told Sunset About You 2 got an updated release date of May 27 on LineTV.

Second Chance the series is coming to LineTV on March 29. I don’t know much about this one. Tons of familiar faces (mostly TharnType side dishes) and some nice looking new talent but a dearth of eng subs. I think it may take on Brothers’ time slot. Line did eng subs for Brothers so maybe they will do 2nd Chance too?

Close Friend the series is coming April 22. This is a combination of 6 couples with 6 story arcs as music videos (maybe)? It’s an epic fan service with familiar faces like OhmFluke (UWMA), MaxNat (LBC also in Y-Destiny), YoonLay (YYY also in Y-Destiny), KimCop (GenY), and JaFirst (TT2).

Y-Destiny starts March 30, and has starting dropping couple’s trailers. I’m still suspicious given the director but it seems like there is plot (or plots) and a theme. Looks to be a series of 7 single ep vignettes (amended, see comments, might be 2 eps each for 14 eps total), different couple each time, some with supernatural elements, all with decent chemistry and acting chops.

Mon jaded rich kid meets poor innocent

Tues sports romance enemies to lovers

Weds the messy realistic actual dating one

Thurs hot ghost boyfriend (sad)

Fri YoonLayPerth coping with loss and finding new love (sad). This one will all rest on Lay's acting so we know it’s in safe hands. Our boy is going to KILL it.

Sat time-slip memory loss reunion romance

I’m thinking we can’t expect any of these to end happy or be classic BL. They’re gonna be more slice of life-ish.

Gossip - BL Outside of Thailand

Scholar Ryu’s Wedding Ceremony AKA Nobleman Ryu’s Wedding (Korean historical BL) got a legit teaser (eng sub here). @curriculumvtae reports that it’s releasing April 15th on WeTV (Philippines & Thailand) and Idol Romance (South Korea), while Will of Thai Bl says it’ll be on Viki too. It’s a short run of 8 ep built on a fake relationship trope (arranged marriage variant):

Ryu Ho Seon’s (Kang In Soo from You Wish) arranged marriage turns out to be with his expected bride’s brother, Choi Ki Wan (Lee Se Jin from Mr Heart). Ryu tries to undo the marriage, but his ill mother opposes this saying the scandal would be too much. Meanwhile, Kim Tae Hyeong (Jang Eui Soo from Where Your Eyes Linger), a senior at Ryu’s school, comes to congratulate him and falls in love with Choi. Then one day, the original bride disappears.

Okay it seems a bit twisty turny for ONLY 8 EPS, but oh my goodness how excited are we? Our first intentional historical BL out of Korea!

We already knew Hong Kong was doing a remake of Japan’s Ossan’s Love under the same name (not my favorite Japanese BL but so very popular) but it’s now reported to be coming to Viu in June. Who knows how the CFA will take it. Depends on whether Hong Kong bows before the NO GAY KISSES regs or if they are going to use this as a political nose thumb... things could get cray with this puppy (the original has several kisses and s shower scene). Are we back in Addicted territory only with added comedy and civil unrest?

Speaking of Japan, Absolute BL (AKA Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai vs Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko) dropped sooner than anyone thought, March 27. But being Japanese who knows how/when/if we get subs. Protag finds himself trapped in a world of BL, but being straight he fights against any hot guy that draws near, but the whole world (literally) is conspiring against him. It’s a parody adapted from a yoai.

What with Absolute BL from Japan plus Lovely Writer and Call it What You Want from Thailand, is 2021 the year of BL being ultra self referential? Sure feels like it.
