Butterfly affects in the httyd books
What if hiccups right shoulder wasn't dislocated in book 2?
What if Hiccup hadn't grabbed toothless in the cave in book 1?
What if Hiccup listened to Wodens fang and didn't help snotlout in book 11?
What if Eggingarde hadn't told him about the sand dragon?
What if Stoick didn't have Hiccup's book in his breast pocket when madguts the murderous shot him in book 6?

Httyd books in just a couple words...
Positives:
Entertaining. Creative. VIKINGS. DRAGONS. Swordfights, songs, libraries, challenges, quests, prison breaks, wisdom, arch-enemies. Great themes of love and friendship, endurance, bullying, and false appearances. "Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." In this case, the reader. The reader knows Hiccup's heart. How unfortunate that the reader can't advocate for him or help his cause!!! Hiccup must figure it out all on his own. Awesome horrors.
Negatives:
Too doomy and gloomy. The wins rarely make up for the losses, the beauty scarcely for everything which is nasty. The atmosphere is mostly depressing. In-universe logic isn't consistent and tends to get bended for the plot.
Overall:
Don't know. I likely won't re-read the books, because I enjoyed the movies and shows more. There were a few captivating creative ideas, and the books explain so wonderfully how the movie!verse came to be. But I have to say that the book!verse isn't among my favorite fictional universes - neither in setting nor in plot.
Favorite characters: One-Eye and Camicazi!!
Least favorite characters: Madguts The Murderous, Gumboil.
Favorite book: Book 4 - How To Cheat A Dragon's Curse. All of it.
Least favorite book: Book 5 - How To Twist A Dragon's Tale because what even was that.
Best scenes: Hiccup stealing the potato, Hiccup on Norbert the Nutjob's ship, Hiccup escaping the Sharkworms in Book 3, the cave behind the waterfall, the Meathead Public Library, pretty much every conversation with Old Wrinkly, Hiccup & Alvin in the underwater sea cave, meeting Excellinor, the prison revolt around the Slavemark, Bertha & Stoick bickering about that one dragon they stole from Madguts I think??, Eggingarde's arc, Hiccup discovering the crown.
Not doing worst scenes...
Favorite creative choices: The potato, THE FIANCES OH MY GOSH, the Romans being part of the universe, nano-dragons, Camicazi, Grimbeard's red herrings.

so for your httyd half brothers au how does Alvin fit in? do we have both Alvins leading the outcasts or just one? if just one then which and if both then how do people differentiate the two?
It's just book Alvin who leads the Outcasts! I've actually swapped show Alvin and his minion Savage out for Madguts the Murderous and Gumboil, and the Show Outcasts for the Murderous Tribe!
Madguts the Murderous was not the main villain, but he was known in the books for being a rival chief who often clashed with Stoick and Bertha and even tried to kill them on multiple occasions. I think he fills in quite well for Show Alvin!
In this au, Madguts is the one who kidnaps Heather and holds her parents hostage, and he will also kidnap Elder and Big Tooth with the Isle of Night trick later on. It will be a lot harder to escape from the Murderous dungeons, and the threats to him and Big Tooth are taken a lot more seriously.
Tumblr media
Savage still exists in this au, but instead of Show Alvin's crony he probably served Book Alvin or Madguts instead!

The book series began in 2003 and I was so disappointed when the film came out because of how different it was from the book series, whenever I would encounter film only fans who had no idea who Alvin the Treacherous or Madguts the Murderous were.
getting a HTTYD ask in my box in the year of our lord 2024 is WILD
I think it's absolutely fair to have negative perceptions of film adaptations when you were exposed to the original media. Between building the imagery in your head, and the amount of context and material that doesn't always have a chance to translate to screen, it would be a stark contrast.
That being said, I do think that the films on their own absolutely stand up to the original work, and creates a beautiful narrative that can be enjoyed by folks who may not have been into HTTYD prior to the first film coming out. I would have never given the books a chance if not for the movies! (also, I'm speaking more on 1 & 2 here. I have too many issues with 3 to lump it in lol)

Old httyd book headcanons
These date back to 2017 damn.

A lot of wanderers joined the No-Names. There is also a new Wanderer Tribe, lead by Bearcub and Egginarde. Bearcub and Egginarde live happily ever.
Fishlegs becomes a great bard. His love poems are still terrible, but his other poetry is great.
Camicazi once burgled Hiccup’s crown while he was wearing it. Hiccup and Fishlegs spent a whole day trying to find it. Camicazi spent that whole say walking around with the crown on her head boasting. “The helmet right off the head of Madguts the Murderous? Puh! I have burgled the crown right of the head of the KING OF THE WILDERWEST.” Actually, Camicazi burgles from Hiccup regularly and brags about it.
The No-Name tribe is the most civilized. Hiccup rebuilt the 100 castles on Tomorrow. It became the island of the No-Names. This earned the tribe the respect of the Visithugs, Berserkers and Outcasts.
Very Vicious defends his hogfly with his life.
Red Ronald is one of the few survivors of book 7. He is Camicazi’s biggest fan.
Hiccup visits the library often. Sometimes he is gone for two whole days before showing up again.
Camicazi has the wildest blond hair in the whole archipelago since HHH 2.
Madguts the Murderous felt like he needed to make up with the new king, afraid that Hiccup had not forgotten about the swimming race and the fact that he leant his stealth dragon to the witch. He invited Hiccup over for an exclusive dinner with him and Gumboil. Because he didn’t speak it was a most awkward dinner. He served food from the ‘traditional Murderous cuisine’. Hiccup was sick for at least a week.
Camicazi is already as tall as her father. He is only 4,6”, and because he is so tiny he has amazing burglary skills.
Actually the silents as a tribe are great burglars. They don’t yell, they don’t do swordfighting, rudery or axethrowing, don’t go to The Thing and basically let the Bog-Burglars manage all of their viking politics. But you won’t see them coming, you won’t hear them leaving. The only thing you’ll notice three days later is that your sheep are gone, as well as your weapons, shields, hairy underpants and helmets.
Tantrum has an even worse handwriting than her father. Not even Hiccup can read her runes. Her first act as new Uglithug chief was shutting down the Uglithug slavelands.
She never got her hogfly though.

Twelve Days of Doomsday, Day Twelve: Hiccup’s Failure
@thefellowshipofthedragonmark @inhonoredglory @thepotatoreader @kingofthewilderwest
The last chapter of HTTYD is bittersweet. Hiccup does his final epilogue as an old man. He says that on one level he succeeded.
Life, unfortunately, doesn’t give us a neat happy ending. Hiccup gets a happy ending in books one through six, and then finally at book twelve. But life keeps throwing new challenges at his way.
So why does his story end when he is crowned king? Because he has grown into the person he was supposed to be. Hiccup became a hero. And this story was about his become a hero the hard way.
In Book Eleven, Hiccup asserted that he needed to suffer everything that he suffered to become the hero that would make peace with Furious, defeat Alvin, and create the slave-free utopia on Tomorrow.
I don’t think anyone needs to suffer to grow, but that is where Cowell and I agree to disagree and she makes her point quite well. Hiccup loses everything over the books: his old home, his childhood innocence, his tribe, and even his memory at one point.
Hiccup has faced the worst of evils. He has seen slavery up close, treachery, perfidy from his cousin, abandonment, and complicity. The potential to become a Grimbeard runs in his and Snotlout’s veins, as we saw when he tricked Madguts the Murderous into taking the Hairy Librarian as his slave to save Bertha. Cue the next book, Hiccup received the Slavemark and was weighed down with what it meant. Hairy also took his revenge in due course.
The abyss did not claim Hiccup when he looked into it. He grazed it, and paid the price with his Slavemark. After that event, he was kind to his enemies, even kind to Snotlout, who betrayed him multiple times. Maybe in another timeline he and Alvin could have allied, or the witch might have become kinder after saving Toothless.
Forgiving Snotlout proved he could be a good king who pardoned his enemies and showed mercy. Remembering Snotlout meant that Hiccup remembered how cruel people could be. And so Hiccup and Luna decided that the dragons should go into hiding, and never interact with people as a whole.
Then why write his memoirs? Why convince us that the dragons are real, when he sought to convince his descendants that they weren’t? Because maybe one of us can become a hero the hard way, and create a new world with dragons.

For the Canon Meme, Book Fishlegs and Camicazi
Canon Meme
FISHLEGS
Canon: Fishlegs gets so fed up with Alvin the Treacherous that he literally starts his own tribe name, the No-Name Tribe. This tribe’s principles starkly contrast the values upon which other Viking clans are based. Whereas all the other tribes have mottos about “only the strong can belong,” Fishlegs’ entire principle is that everyone is welcome here.
Headcanon: The No-Name Tribe does become a real-deal thing. Fishlegs does accept anyone and everyone (except for Alvin) who needs a tribe. Since Fishlegs is the royal bard of the renewed Wilderwest kingdom, the No-Names become respected, accepted, and influential. The establishment of the No-Name Vikings is a huge, extraordinary element of social reform in the Barbaric Archipelago, one of the forefront components steering the Vikings away from their “uncivilized” traditions.
Heartcanon: My heart just really wishes Fishlegs and his mother could have met in person. ;_; Fishlegs meeting his mother after searching so long and hard for his family...
Soulcanon: Fishlegs is an amazing and talented bard.
CAMICAZI
Canon: During the great, intratribal swordfighting competition in which all the members of all the Viking tribes assembled compete... Camicazi made it to the quarterfinals. She was eleven years old at the time, the youngest person ever to make FlashMaster and receive bronze belt for her abilities. Oh... and she did this all with an injury. She had a limp, and it was the limp that eventually got the best of her when she was competing against Madguts the Murderous. I mean, that just goes to show how amazing she is.
Headcanon: This is such a weird headcanon, but welp. Here goes. XD Camicazi is a short, tiny little girl throughout the How to Train Your Dragon books. However, at the end of the book series, Camicazi is about twelve years old, meaning that she might not be too far off from her adult height. It’s still possible for her to have one last growth spurt, but even then, I do doubt that Camicazi would grow enough to ever be a tall individual.
Given as her mother is such a massive, impending figure, I’m guessing that Camicazi’s body type comes from her father. I headcanon that her father is on the smaller side. I also headcanon that Camicazi does not inherit Big Boobied Bertha’s big boobs - again, a trait from her father’s side of the family.
Heartcanon: Hiccup has big moments in How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury. Fishlegs definitely has big moments in How to Fight a Dragon’s Fury. It’s not like Camicazi wasn’t present and wasn’t doing cool things, but let’s heartcanon she did even more. Give her a chance to shine and be the amazing whirlwind of unfettered Viking energy she is!
Soulcanon: Camicazi and Hiccup are better as friends than in a ship. While the end of book twelve might suggest romantic feelings could later pop up for Hiccup and Cami, and while Cressida Cowell refuses to name King Hiccup’s wife (suggesting it’s someone we know), my soul bleeds with the idea that these two are better as friends. What is so incredible about the HTTYD book series is that it focuses specifically on the power of familial and platonic love. Camicazi, Fishlegs, and Hiccup are a powerful friendship trio whose dynamics should not be broken with a romance. The story is so much better off if these are three friends who forge through trials together. The story is so much better if the main female character and the male female character don’t ever fall in love. I love the friendship between Hiccup and Camicazi. They’re friends. That’s what’s so great about them.

The Impossible Task
Chapter 1: Part 1
First / Next
About: Madguts wants to have a proper relationship with his love, Mewgull. Unfortunately there's an Impossible Task he needs to complete in order to win her hand. Set by her mischievous late brother, she doesn't trust it. Madguts must go back and restore her old home but the last thing she wants is anyone to go back there.
If you're not familiar with Wolf Warriors yet, feel free to explore the tag on my page.
Music: cinq by zeal and ardor
Bandcamp link
I cant believe Im publishing this but Im so excited that I did it. I started Wolf Warriors when I was 12 but Im sure gonna go full 2000s wolf fanfic with it. Prepare for mysterious illness that wipes out my very special mains family and life. If you dont like overly, almost unnecessarily dark, gory plots, this may not be for you. Im even going to use music I imagined this with over a decade ago. I remember acted out fight scenes on the trampoline. Goodness.
Anyway, Chapter 1 is done and Ill upload the other part probably tomorrow. I've got a lot done with this so expect regular updates. My asks are also open.
This time I used Zeal and Ardor for the music. Please support their music. They rock.
