okay so i don't really have a point to make over here but i've been thinking about this a lot lately so here we go: ever notice how alex tends to use a lot of dance-related words as metaphors for sex but almost always undercuts the image of elegance/beauty that might evoke using interesting juxtapositions and wordplay??

in piledriver waltz (submarine ep, 2010; also reprised for suck it and see, 2011) he writes "i heard the piledriver waltz// it woke me up this morning". now 'piledriver waltz' here refers to someone having sex (atleast the contributors at genius think so and so do i). turner uses the word waltz- an intimate ballroom dance between two partners- but adds piledriver- which is, as wikipedia tells me, "a professional wrestling driver move in which the wrestler grabs their opponent, turns them upside-down, and drops into a sitting or kneeling position, driving the opponent head-first into the mat". so you see, the refined, elegant, romantic connotations of waltz is contrasted with the image of rough ruthlessness that piledriver brings.

(ALSO also did you notice? a wrestling reference? all the way back in 2010 👀 now idk if it's a regular vocab words or specific to wrestling-lingo only back in uk, but my studied-english-as-first-language-in-school-but-not-native speaker ass did have to google what the hell that means)

another such oxymoron-esque treatment of metaphors for sex we see in everything you've come to expect (everything you've come to expect, 2016). the line, one of my absolute favourite things turner and kane have ever written, goes "dirtbag ballet by the bins down the alley // as i walk through the chalet of the shadow of death". 'dirtbag ballet' again refers to sex here, this time the illicit kind, the kind that takes place in shadowy corners and dingy alleys. 'ballet' is another term that we will immediately associate with elegance and graceful moves but the use of 'dirt bag' by it's side brings a sense of crassness, almost vulgar quality to it. that term immediately paints a very stark picture of wild clandestine passion that illicit affairs carries probably. the song talks about that a lot.

(PS: an applause for the impeccable internal rhyme in those lines tho. *chef's kiss*)

the last example that stands out to me is from four stars out of five (tranquility base hotel and casino, 2018) where the line goes "hokey cokey with the opposite sex." (someone mentioned it around here today and that's what sparked this post. EDIT: it's @homoirrealis https://www.tumblr.com/lalaballa1977/717488374837084160?source=share) now there's no clever oxymoron-metaphor situation here, but the choice of that specific dance to talk about sex (straight sex, as the songwriter so kindly points out) is very interesting to me. hokey cokey as we know is a campfire dance that originated with brit folk dances and tunes. it's so funny because whenever i hear that line it immediately takes me back to kindergarten and a bunch of us kids standing in a circle, singing the rhyme and learning the dance. therefore in my mind atleast, hokey cokey evokes images of practiced, monotonous movements of hand and feet, no fluidity, no elegance. also the communal aspect of it. what if we read it as something you are made to participate in because you are a part in a group, because a number of pairs of eyes are on you. a question worth pondering perhaps.

and all this referring to sex?

also the song goes on to entice you to escape to this swanky hotel-casino-taqueria up on the moon and get far, far away from shit that you have done and regret and want to forget. then why is this hokey cokey with the opposite sex also one of those things the narrator might want to forget?

king of carrot flowers pt 1 & 2 & 3 by neutral milk hotel with specifically the opening being about her descent into the coup, once the guitar riff hits it immediately picks up into the chaos of the coup. as the lyrics play, we see the opposite, her faith in her cause is being destroyed before her eyes as starclan fights against her. the rest of the song is how this has wracked her with guilt and has affected her relationships.

explaining my blorbo associations pt2: jules who i do not draw often im so sorry u look like that babygirl

song: i actually... have never made a jules playlist LMAO my jules brainrot is so academic i could spit theories for him but not songs. so i had to dive into my spotify likes and find something. goldilocks spot is actually from a very old jolyne playlist i made but i think it also fits jules. to me it's a song about being painfully aware of how... average? not-outstanding? just there? you are and the angst that comes with it, the bitterness towards other people (in jules' case, for not seeing him as who he knows himself to be—a noble). but there's also a stubborness and pride that keeps you from fully confronting those feelings/that dilemma and finding peace within it, which is fitting for the persistent turbulence within jules... a lot of this is my (quite liberal?) interpretation tho so yeah

color & object: purple is the color of royalty and lavender is pretty and calming and healing. quite the nice set of descriptions for someone like jules :)

animal: i dont kin assign animals often so this was hard. but i chose raven as a parallel to doves... because jules' dove of happiness was/is rosemarine, and because jules is almost like rose's shadow in many ways... also ravens are kinda bad omens i feel like for all the gentleness jules shows he is also obviously capable and willing to do terrible things, he's selfish and prideful and even a little greedy... and lol i think the negativity also fits some of his self-image

other: i think it was a fic which was about jules and perfume which made me think about this association... lavender was the scent too so that is another explanation to the above lol. as for the shadows again it's cos of his duo thing with rosemarine but also everything he does is kind of... in the shadows... he has engaged in shady shit (gang moment???) and is often lurking/observing situations (as the right hand man yk) and also just him looking out for the people he cares about even if in incredibly convoluted ways (see: rosemarine and jules' deal with the thugs who wanted to beat him up when they first arrived at lacombrade). he does the dirty work in the dark or smth like that. tbh there are a lot of oppositions with rosejules, the light/shadow thing is pretty on the nose i think but my favorite is probably the feminine/masculine. (disclaimer thisis an idea spitball Only so pls do not sue me for incorrect use of terminology; im sorry feminist theory i promise ill read more of you BUT a lot of the ideas kind of branch out of 2nd wave ideas/concepts i believe)

because publicly rose seems to take the patriarchal role as the superintendent (ie. being the disciplinarian, having power, being the symbol of the institution) while jules assumes a more matriarchal role as advisor, someone more approachable and "kinder" than the patriarch... then it all gets skewed because of auguste's presence, so they actually switch with rose being "feminized" and jules being "masculinized" but anyway LOL i have many thoughts on this specific kind of. feminist/queer inspired reading of rosejules

I found that story years ago and I've been reading since then and I have been trying to make a playlist, specifically around The Investigator's Club, because I love those guys. But I simply can't pick out more than 25 songs that fit the vibe and I've been trying for yeaaars. Hmmm, I don't have a playlist per se. But, I do have a few songs that over the years, I've used a lot to help plan the series. The one I always associate with Hq at Hgowarts since I've planned a lot of the series while listening to it is Home by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. I'm not entirely sure why, I think it's just the dream of working to/returning to a time of warmth/comfort/comparative innocene matched up with a march like beat reminds me of people fighting for the love that they hold dear which I find relatable to a lot of characters in the story.

Other than that, I feel liek the songs I listen to vary a good bit based on the time and story I'm writing. For this fifth one, for example, I've been listening to some more angsty ones to fit the tone: It's Alright by Mother Mother, War by Former Vandal, Achilles Come Down by Gang of Youth, and Campus by Batille (which I first listened to because of this amazing fanvid and now associate a lot with Akaashi).

Like I said, those are all fairly angsty because of the tone fo the fifth story. Not all the songs I listen to are, I'm just struggling to pick a few that I specifically listen to for the series rather than just in general.

👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical...)? Margin has blue eyes w the scleras being slightly green tinted, aka Octavio but less intense. She also has the purple striped mask which is the main thing people notice. There isn't anything particularly special about them but her irises do turn red when she uses her venom (I don't have a biological explanation for this it just looks cool)

💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep? Margin has a very specific sleep schedule which she retained even after moving to the surface and then to Splatsville so I think she is one of those people who can just like Fall Asleep On Command almost haha. If she is awake after 10pm she gets so tired. I don't rly have an answer for the second question I guess just not being anywhere loud

🎂 BIRTHDAY CAKE - when is their birthday? do they like celebrating it? Margin's birthday is May 9th which is the date I started writing At Sixes and Sevens, I don't think she celebrates it or even tells other people about it though

🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast? She eats plain buttered toast for breakfast every day this is like, a specific character trait she has. Somehow.

🌺 HIBISCUS - do they have any allergies? I don't think she has any particularly strong allergies but I think pretty much any of the octolings who grew up in the domes probably get hayfever simply because their body isn't adjusted to Lots Of Pollen In The Air (and maybe some other things also along that logic)

she is so layered and complex. idk i think her lines are funny and all but also there is a lot more than that. like people often mistake her for being ‘dumb’ but she’s actually like really emotionally intelligent. and she’s a good friend, she tries her best, etc. i also find that she’s very open in general, which gets mistaken for being naïve, but it’s not she just views the good in people rather than the bad (seen especially with santana. like artie insinuating santana’s a bad person and brittany getting defensive, but then britt not holding a grudge against him either bc even though it wasn’t cool, she knows he’s a nice person and didn’t mean it, etc. like people need that patience that she has in her life) but also if she’s particularly upset with something, she doesn’t know how to handle it which like. idk. i find her character very interesting to analyze so. LOL i didn't really have any specific instruments in mind per se, but i definitely had vibes in mind for them. and because of those vibes, i tended to gravitate towards songs from the same or similar composers when i was choosing songs for different scenes

orlam's in particular all REALLY have a similar vibe because almost every one of the songs somewhat related to him are by the same composer, who is one of my absolute favs, kohrogi. and kohrogi uses a ton of theremin in all of their songs, so that probably explains it LDKAJSDKFA like literally all of these songs are by kohrogi:

i have a tendency to find a composer i like and use a ton of their music, and in that way, it kind of naturally gives more consistency and vibes i think perhaps 💦

i also used the same composer for a lot of orlam's songs in Arc 5 (not kohrogi this time, but a different one, but the same one for multiple songs), though i won't go into that here as you haven't played it yet lakdjfad but probably you will notice that perhaps

as for the others, i can't really think of quite as strong of a theme across the different songs related to them 🤔 somehow orlam's music vibe to me is the strongest perhaps LOL tho i also lucked out a bit that for both the songs i chose for genzou's and gidget's themes for instance, there were two versions of them, which gave me some variety (and i created an even slower version of genzou's music box theme for arc 4 myself)

you can kinda see how i find and latch on to new composers tho across production if you look at the song/composer list in the music gallery lkadjfad like you'll notice i found a new composer i really loved in arc 5.1 (who is also the composer i used a ton in OFW), then another one in 5.15. i think i use the same composer every time i want a solo piano piece. those kinds of things. somehow i'm quite glad about the order in which i found a lot of these though as i absolutely love how the soundtrack has turned out and i listen to it constantly even myself lakdjfads

I have a horse, so I usually shower immediately after coming home and then it’s sweatpants or pyjama time depending on how late it is. And even on days where I’ve been in the stable early and went to uni after I tend to at least change into a hoodie or something when I come home. I adore knitted clothes (best made by my grandma) and I am a total sucker for knitted socks. 24/7 at home and often out in public as well during winter. I am also very deeply in love with my bathrobe. It’s super duper fluffy and I basically live in it every evening except for the warmest summer months.

nutmeg ⇢ how’s your room/home decorated? do you have a specific theme or style going on?

The thing is that right now I’m just renting a room, so none of the stuff is actually mine. But the walls are dark purple and it’s very cozy. I’ve begun looking for a place closer to the city though so I don’t know how much longer I’ll be staying here tho. Considering that I moved here directly from abroad after having only gotten a house tour over video I’m very happy with how it turned out.

My room back home which I decorated a lot myself as a teenager has a black wallpaper with gold details and white furniture to add some light (at my mom’s insistence, to stop me from living in a cave during the emo years hah (in retrospect, she certainly had a point)). Our house is pretty old and I love the older style so I tried to keep it that way. Oh and it has a tiled stove! And pictures of my horses. Lots of horse details. And some fandom posters and stuff. And books everywhere.

The playlist I chose was my Helen Magnus list, and the first shuffled song was Glory and Gore by Lorde. I think it is a good song in and of itself, but associated with Helen it becomes even better. It’s giving me The Five vibes. I can’t help but imagine all the things she has been involved with throughout history.
