Zamn, only one post in and shit’s already devolved into a generic article churning out stupid news about celebrities that never had relevance. I'on even care.

Imagine that you’re like me, ‘doomscrolling’ on twitter like every reasonable Zoomer (slang for Gen Z). Terrifying thought, but you’re also mildly interested in Sonic the Hedgehog. As you’re scrolling through, trying to find something to waste your anger on, you encounter this image:

A meme, they call it. It may be passed off as random flubber, but it’s a sign that your Twitter feed will become unbearable for about a week.

So, who is Emi Jones?

Basically, Emi Jones is a semi-popular voice actress in the Sonic community, mostly known for her audio series, “Sonic and Tails R”, conveniently starring a Ryan Drummond.

Who is Ryan Drummond?

He used to be the voice actor for Sonic during the “Adventure era” of Sonic, which is around 1998-2004. He’s important to the… story.

What happened?

Basically, Emi Jones had a private Twitter account, which gave away the fact that she and Ryan were having a private relationship.

Anyway, this could be considered an example of a celebrity controversy. However, this is the most milquetoast controversy I’ve personally witnessed.

Nothing actually problematic surfaced, such as Justin Roiland being sued for domestic abuse, or most fittingly, Hunnid P, rapper known for the Knuckles tracks in SA2, attempting to extort Emi for money she didn’t have.

It can be boiled down into people complaining about two consenting adults having sex, or people complaining about people complaining about two consenting adults having sex.

Technically speaking, I’m adding fuel to the fire too, except the fuel is already burnt coal and I’m somehow expecting it to undergo nuclear fusion even though that’s not how it works; and the fire is like a candle’s flame.

Poetic. But basically, terminally online people (like me) should find better ways to waste their time. However, at the end of the day, iss funy doe.

However, I must give it a 6.5/10 because I don’t like Sonic Heroes (2003).

This screenshot is of a Youtube video and Got damh there is so much to analyze. Sonic is characterized to be shrugging as his Sonic Adventure 1 (1998) model, representing Ryan Drummond and how he simply could not resist getting into trouble like the rebel he is!!

The second aspect you would notice is the woman on the right drawn to look somewhat seductive (oooh). However, you’ll be bamboozled to find out that that woman has the manliest voice on the planet. I’m talking full on Dwayne the rock, Tyler, the creator type bass. It’s like if a man and a woman had a child!

The “RANK A” is simply the cherry on top of such a delightful meme!

This would be a 10/10 image, however points must be taken off for informalities as some parts of the image are written in It*lian, so it’s a 6.7/12.

HAHAHHAHA LOOK AT THIS IDIOT! THIS FUCKING DUMBASS WAS TRYING TO CORRECT SOMEONE ON WHETHER RYAN CHEATED ON HIS WIFE WITH EMI, BY CLAIMING THEY WERE DIVORCED IN 2019, BEFORE THE NEWS CAME. BUT TURNS OUT THIS AFFAIR WAS FROM 2015 AND THIS IDIOT WAS SHOT DOWN WITH AN UNRECOVERABLE BLOW!!!

Overall, 7.4/10, it has a little something for everyone.

The Curious Case of Billie Eilish and Cultural Appropriation or Bad Guy

Billie Eilish be cultural appropriating? How? The baggy clothes? The way she speaks? I'm genuinely curious. I have a passing interest in her as an artist so i don't really pay all that much attention to her career. Is she really that bad cats have taken notice? Like, Bad Guy is an ear worm. That's as far as I've really gotten into her catalog. I'm a thirty-seven year old Black dude. She got nothing for me outside of dope beats. My kid sister feels the same. She’s Desi and tells me that she hasn’t seen Eilish crib anything from the Indians and I'm inclined to agree. I think it's a little more obvious when people crib Desi culture, though. They have a very distinct aesthetic that is hard to steal with aplomb. You know that sh*t when you see and Billie don’t match that look at all. Black culture IS American culture. The US is a hodge-podge of different races and ethnicity but we, as Black folks, are too dope not to rise to the top. Like the cream! The cream of the crop, he says in a Macho Man vice. Oh Yeah! Everything dope about the US can be traced back to Black people. Slang, fashion, music, and even food; All of the dopest sh*t is directly tied to Black folks. By the time Billie was old enough to even understand music, Black culture had shattered US borders and conquered the world. From the sneaker game in Japan to the objective influence of RnB in K-Pop, to the aggressive adoption of Basketball in Germany, and so much more, Black culture dominates everything.

We set the trends now and Billie has been swathed in that since she was literally born. Chick is a Zoomer so, instead of having to watch my people's shine creep in incrementally like generations before, that sh*t is objectively indistinguishable from other, less dominate, truer to her, heritages. Billie never had to see the indecency cases for Luke and 2 Live Crew growing up or the the villainizaton of street culture. She didn't have to watch the fight for legitimizing hip hop in the Eighties or the abject anger and cynicism of rap in the Nineties. She doesn’t know how Black kids were used as bogeymen for suburbia by unscrupulous politicians for wearing baggy clothes, sagging our pants, and wearing our natural hair. She doesn’t know the very real blood, seat, and tears my people shed to be heard, to be seen, to be acknowledge. She doesn’t know the long road that came before. All she knows are the a victory laps of the Aughts and the introspection of the Tens. She doesn't know that Vanilla Ice was a joke and, until Em came through doing his thing, that White kids were straight up dismissed as rappers. Now, we got cats like Lil' Pump and MGK straight stinking up the joint. She doesn't know that Black Panther was preceded by Black Man or Meteor man, she just knows that Chadwick Boseman was dope and it's sad he passed away. All of that is academic to her like the toll of WWII or the veracity of the first Civil Rights movement to me. I can’t understand any of that on a practical level because didn’t live any of it.

Billie doesn’t know the history of my culture and it’s fight to be seen as not a threat, but pure expression, and i think that’s kind of a beautiful thing. I don't think kids Billie's age can actively appropriate Black culture because it's the only culture they know. Black culture has been pop culture longer than she’s been alive. She's apparently stated that Hip Hop is her favorite genre of music and her biggest inspiration. The fact that this upper middle class White girl just naturally accepts my people’s art so effortlessly, notes that it’s her favorite music, and pays credit to the Black artists whom inspire her whenever she can, is f*cking dope to me. She doesn’t think of us as thugs or criminals. Our music isn’t the anthem of the violent urban menace anymore. Eilish actually is pretty outspoken about race relations in the US. She was blowing up Trump whenever she could and making her voice heard during the second Civil Rights movement last summer. Chick ain’t wearing us as a gimmick to cash in like Elvis or Miley and is never overtly disrespectful like Shane Dawson or Rachel Dolezel. This chick not only loves our culture and respects the f*ck out of it but loves US as a people. It’s weird that cats think this chick has ill intent with the way she manifest what is effectively her culture, too. That tells you right there where her heart is. This doesn’t feel like appropriation to me. It doesn’t have that malevolence to it. This feels like genuine appreciation and i think we should recognize that.

So, let’s talk about translation in games.

Over the last few weeks I’ve played through Splatoon 2 and its excellent Octo Expansion.

(I’ll get back to Three Houses one day. Probably. Maybe.)

I’m fascinated and somewhat mystified by Splatoon’s translations. I enjoy it, but the whole I’m playing, I wonder what any of this was in the Japanese, where the cultural terrain is surely very different, and to what extent the translators have taken liberties in order to produce a script with an American cultural resonance. (I’m not American, mind, but I realise this script is aimed at them.)

As a first note, I think the script is actually done very well. Comedy is difficult to translate at the best of times, and even more than that, the Inklings need to come off as endearing without being annoying. That’s an incredibly fine line, especially since the core joke with the Inklings is that they use outrageously outdated slang all the time. It would be very easy to cross over from cute to just plain tedious (and I think the first game’s marketing did that a few times, cf. that annoying ad song), but for the most part the game hits the balance very well.

However, slang is incredibly culturally specific. What the heck is the Japanese script? Is the Japanese version still poking fun at 90s youth culture in the West? I genuinely don’t know to what degree that sort of thing transferred to Japan. Or is it a subtly different spoof over there, with resonances I wouldn’t understand, and the English translators were able to cleverly align it with a different Western stereotype? There’s almost certainly some translation going on, and it’s easy to see that all the squid jokes, or references to different types of seafood, make sense in Japan but not overseas, but I wonder about the extent. Agent 8’s poems are all tanka in Japanese. There are things that will go over a foreigner’s head.

I also wonder about some of the overall themes. The Octo Expansion brings up some ideas about ethnic or racial conflict; these were hinted at in the first game, but didn’t get as much time to shine. Here I thought the translation actually made a mis-step or two: some of Marina’s chat logs read more like the reference is to millennial/zoomer culture – which surprised me, since the core joke with the Inklings is the anachronism. But beyond that, what they do is present a possible read of the game that’s very specific to American race relations. That read is supported by some other shifts: the Squid Sisters back in the first game were Japanese teen idols, but now Off the Hook are rappers. You can’t really evoke 90s rap, complete with bling and booyahs, without on some level referencing race. So maybe the original version set about evoking rap, and the translation amped that up in a culturally appropriate manner?

So I guess my core question is... to what extent are many of these references produced by the translators? Wikipedia tells me that there is a popular rap scene in Japan, but it looks like the context in terms of racial issues is very different. Sometimes I really wish I was a fly on the wall during some of the translator meetings...
