Thinking about love in season 2 of The Bear and how Carmy seems to conceptualize "love" and "fun" as opposites — because for him, they historically have been. It's something I really noticed in Fishes (2x06): how vocally and genuinely everyone in his family — including in-laws and functionally adoptive members like Richie and the Fak siblings — loves each other, but also how deeply entwined that love is with stress and chaos and criticism.
Natalie is nicknamed, by people who love her, after a mistake she made years ago and which is still held over her head when she tries to help in the kitchen. Donna loves her children and is loved by them in turn, but she's constantly on the edge of a meltdown, unable to offer or accept support. She spends hours cooking them a beautiful dinner, and then she drives a car through the wall. Michael reminds Carmy he loves him and tries to give him advice, and then he gets in a massive fight with Uncle Lee at the dinner table and starts throwing forks. Cooking is clearly so important to his family, but doing this activity they love, and especially doing it around the people they love, so rarely results in a feeling of "amusement or enjoyment."
And so it's no surprise, really, that the career Carmy loves is one that gives him panic attacks and made him throw up before work every day, or that he (and Natalie and Sydney) not only decide on such a radical transformation of the restaurant but give themselves a ridiculously sort timeline to complete it. He's stressed and miserable a lot of the time, but is it really something he loves if he doesn't feel that way?

as a writing prompt: maybe something with pete and sleep? i mean, as a bodyguard he probably had a weird sleep schedule, especially looking over tankhun—would be interesting to see how that might affect him post-canon :3
(i hope this isn't too unspecific)
Hey there! Thank you so much for sending me this incredible prompt. I have so, so many thoughts about Pete and sleep that I could write a whole damn essay about it. I tried my best here. I didn't want to overthink it - because that's not the point with this imo - so what I've written below is my effort into putting all of those thoughts in order. Hope you like it, nonetheless ❤️ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pete had always had a strange relationship with sleep. He never seemed to be getting enough of it, but it still managed to somehow sustain him. Just enough to endure hours upon hours of grueling boxing practice, no matter his father's harsh punishments at any minor mistake. Just enough to last in the ring, no matter the number of opponents he faced or the amount of times he lost. Just enough to make it through Chan's training regimen, no matter how his body screamed at him to stop moving, as if unaware of the consequences of such an decision. Just enough for the movie marathons Khun Nu would host on a whim, suspiciously on days Pete accompanied Khun Kinn on missions of high importance to the family. For some reason, they were never nearly as tiring for Pete as whatever Khun Nu planned.
More sleep wasn't what Pete needed. More sleep meant less chances of hearing his parents arguing at night. More sleep meant less practice, less matches, less earnings from fights. More sleep meant less awareness of the moments his father turned more vicious than usual. More sleep meant less opportunities to earn the position of Head Bodyguard, to prove his worth to the main family.
Pete didn't need more sleep. He was fine.
Porsche was the first person to disrupt that reality. Pete could honestly not be blamed for it; how could he know a couple of drinks would have such an effect on him? Heavy sleep was a peculiar thing, he realized. Pete was used to unsettling dreams accompanying his slumbers, but that night there was nothing. No other sensations either; he simply closed his eyes and suddenly, he was elsewhere, with no way of knowing how he ended up there. A fleeting thought had him wonder if death was a similar experience. He pushed it aside. There was a danger to this much lack of consciousness. Pete thought so when he woke up, only to find Porsche's face mere inches away from his own, his lips almost brushing over his. It scared him, how exposed he had let himself be. He vowed to never let it happen again. But then Vegas entered the picture, making him break every self-imposed rule of his, ruining him in the process. It started at the basement and continued at the safehouse; Pete slept and slept and slept, more so than he had had his entire life. It didn't happen willingly. Pete fought it at first, fought the urge to close his eyes and succumb to Vegas' will, let him break his spirit like he so desperately wanted since the moment he had captured him. But Pete was stubborn until he couldn't be anymore, until his injuries got the better of him, and sleep was the only way to heal, besides the pill he tenderly got shoved into his mouth. That's what Vegas told him, anyway, and even though Pete didn't know if he should believe him, he didn't have much of a choice. After he escaped the prison that fleetingly felt like a home, sleep became a constant state of existing. It was as if he was sleepwalking through his new life, the life Vegas threw at him with bloody hands and demanded of him to accept. He never wanted this, he kept telling himself. Sleep wasn't made for someone like him. He wanted to wake up. In a twisted sense, Pete got his wish when Vegas got shot and spent weeks in the main family hospital wing fighting for his life. Pete couldn't sleep. No matter how much his body begged him to, he couldn't do it. He had to watch over Vegas, over the man who owed him fully, completely, and make sure he survived. Pete's responsibility was to stay awake. Vegas' responsibility was to wake up. When he finally did, and later when he told him he was the most important person in his life, Pete finally felt like he was allowed to rest. He would not get punished for it. He would not lose something precious to him again. He could just close his eyes and all would be well. Sleep didn't feel like punishment anymore. It felt like nourishment, like a gift. Now, there were days when Pete slept heavily, days when he woke up and needed a moment for his sight to clear, before finding Vegas next to him, his gaze piercing through every single wall he'd built to protect himself throughout the years. And every single time, Pete got reminded of the safehouse, of a kiss in the form of a pill, and it scared him, before a sense of calmness washed over him. It was fine. Five more minutes wouldn't hurt.

allow me to indulge my gay theatre nerd side for a moment. now if i'm being perfectly honest, i normally don't like jukebox musicals. they usually feel too forced to me and i prefer a musical that actually has songs, y'know, written specifically for it and isn't just trying to fit songs into a story they weren't made for. it just feels more creative to me. if i wanted to listen to preexisting songs, i'd just listen to them at home without the extra story. i don't need a musical for that. HOWEVER. if anyone wanted to write a jukebox musical using fall out boy or mcr songs i would eat that shit UP no questions asked. in fact if i had any talent i'd write one myself

the implications....
folie a deux meaning / folie a deux album cover / pete's bear hat(s)
#myevilposts#pete wentz#also the teddy bear rug would be fun to mention in this discussion but these ones are more serious.#the thing with pw is that sometimes he does things that are so devious and strategic and genius and sneaky and poignant#and other times it just seems that way and was actually just him being silly.#this goes both ways btw.#like a lot of mania era stuff i feel was mocked as him being silly but was actually deep and then a lot of older stuff#that people obsess over dissecting was actually Not That Deep on his account at least.#it's kinda not his fault that he's a cartoon character. kinda. but he knows how to lean into it.#pw understands camp better than 99% of users on this website tbh.#fall out boy#also pete and bebe wearing matching bear hats during hiatus. is like exactly what i'm talking about. lol.#the implication being that the bear/becoming a bear represents embracing the madness and becoming one with the grizzly bear#that the human in the bear costume is carrying on the folie cover.#i feel like it's not a coincidence that the guy looks like pete too. it might be but i always figured it was intentional.#the grizzly bear/real life equivalent to the madness of folie a deux as a condition is open to interpretation more#i think. obviously it could represent the co dependence between pete and patrick. but it could also#represent pete's marriage as a whole to the band/his work.#i think it's most noteworthy again that he wore the bear hat matching with bebe DURING HIATUS.#similarly to the stump club shirt i feel like it's pretty clear he was incredibly torn up about the hiatus.#maybe it's that pete had a co dependent relationship with his public image/identity within the scope of fob's fame.#A LOT of black cards calls back to fob / is in response to or commentary of his fame from fob.#because of course it did/was. fob was intrinsic to his celebrityhood. and that celebrityhood obviously was intrinsic to him.#this is not to downplay the other aspects of his identity. the opposite actually.#especially considering that his public image was so skewed and dumbed down and he was rightfully very upset about that#and that is very prevalent/important/vital i think to understanding things like black cards as a whole.

ASPBO Good and Evil Dichotomy
People like A Separate Peace better than Peace Breaks Out, but why is that?
Well here's my two cents. The first book takes place during the war, but before the boys are due to go. They are children holding onto what's left of their childhood before they die in battle or come out changed. Finny is the representation for all that is good and pure in the world; namely childhood purity and innocence. He implicitly trusts everyone and more importantly Gene, who kind of representatives the world. The tragedy in that book is that Gene's purity and the goodness in the world (Finny) is tainted and then destroyed by his own hand. Just as the world and these boys should have been able to live out their lives peacefully and happily, something always comes in and destroys it. Usually as a side effect of something else, like greed. Gene was so caught up in jealousy and his problems that he unknowingly destroyed what he thought was an indestructible force. He took Finny for granted and didn't realize the harm he was capable of until it was too late. The novel ends with Finny telling Gene that he forgives him and Gene forgiving himself; similar to the story of Pandora's Box where even after all the demons, there is still hope. He may have destroyed the peace, but that doesn't mean he took all the Finny out of the world.
ON THE OTHER SIDE Peace Breaks out starts from the point of view of one of those boys who went to war and came out changed, but the war is finally over. During the war it was easy to know one's enemy and assume that the war represented all the evil in the world, but then he meets Wexford, a child whose goal is to take control of everyone and cause mayhem. He represents the inherent evil in human beings, and he's so insidious that his maliciousness touches the hearts of all those around him and causes death and destruction, often without lifting a finger. Where Finny who was never given a last name represented childhood innocence, Wexford who only has a last name is the darker mature adult world. Finny possessed the quality of something immortal, while Wexford possesses something that cycles through hosts and places, never truly dying because it will always be reborn. Wexford rejects childhood in every way he can- he dresses in a grey suit (kids wear many colored suits but not gray according to 40s fashion history sites), he drinks alcohol and smokes, he is able to appear older than he is, and often frequents bars. The one thing that he, as hate instead of Finny's love can't understand, is romance and sex. He likes the idea of being in control, and unless all of the power in a relationship was with him, he can't stand the idea of being vulnerable or known by another. Gene was the accidental adult who killed his childhood, but here is a boy who purposely poses as an adult and plots to kill his childhood so that he can complete his transformation into something with all of the power in society. Finny didn't care about that- he was content to share his wins and losses and his entire heart with one person and make that his entire world. But where Finny, who is sunny and innocent is happy as himself, Gene and Wexford (and adulthood as a whole) recognize that there is a gaping hole in them, an unmissable hole. The older they get, the more distant their dreams and the nice illusions about the world fade away, and they're left to walk into the dark, full of trepidation and fear because they are aware that there really are monsters. This bothers Gene though, and he hides into himself not trusting anyone. Wexford instead decides to become the worst monster he can, so that all the other ones will be nothing compared to him. Gene is a follower where Wexford is a leader. (Actually I read a review on here that Wex was like a mix of Gene and Finny. Maybe this is what they meant. Gene saw god in Finny, Wex sees god in himself. He's Gene if Gene was a narcissist with Finny's confidence)Anyway, Pete realizes that evil is everywhere and cannot be killed, so he resigns himself to living in a world of monsters pretty much. So both stories share overlap, but there's plenty that's different. They're both cautionary tales. But one is about recognizing the evil in oneself and the other is about recognizing the evil in the world.

I do not legitimately ship any non-canon ships within ofmd HOWEVER I think Lucius/Jim is incredibly underrepresented considering the whole olu-jealousy kiss, the- I could and almost did murder you- vibes, and the whole "would it weird if I'm into Jim now..." interaction
Actually I don't even care about the details of it, I just want Lucius to saunter up to Pete, coy smile on his face like, "Babe, guess what.....I just hooked up with Jim -SHH KEEP YOUR VOICE DOWN!!- You'll alert the whole ship! They'll kill me!" And Pete is just like, "How. In the Hell. Did you manage THAT. I am Terrified and absolutely in love with you rn, tell me Everything!" because we all know, as much as Pete loves Lucius's Lucius-ness, he is also enamoured and incredibly impressed with more traditional piracy too, and of course Lucius's story starts with Jim trying to kill him in an epic pirate showdown...
#ofmd#woes of emily#i think people are wary of shipping jim with anyone because they're very sweet together with olu but#i just see this one so rarely!!#especially when Lucius seems to be paired up with almost anyone. or well. izzy. quite often#this is obviously with a polyam Lucius#honestly i think pete would be terrified and confused about how Lucius even pulled it off#actually THATS what i want i think#wait adding to the post rn lol#Oh God it got long#sometimes two characters hooking up can actually really be about the relationship between two other characters#you know like. drunk history. or antman#where you have people interpreting a story in their voice but others are acting it out - through this lense but also semi-accurately to how#it happened? that's what I'm imagining#seems tricky to achieve through words but damn i could try i guess 😂😂#lots of lucius overstating his coolness and Pete eating it up and maybe sometimes being a little suspicious#but enjoying it too much to care#to return to my original point with this. if jim wasnt enby. or if Lucius was thinner#would there be more of them together? or is it purely that people just really enjoy their relationships outside of this?#although. idk if that's the case with Lucius because i see him and izzy art a lot too#maybe their vibes are just not compatible but tbh that doesnt normally stop people#i genuinely do not know the reason and tbh#i dont ship any of it. but i do enjoy the content sometimes#eh. whatever#ask to tag

One thing I haven't seen a lot of talk about in the fandom so far is about the financials of this season.
It took us two whole months to get a confirmation of renewal from Max, and I talked at the time that I think there was probably a lot of heated negotiations going on at the time with contracts and that's why it took as long as it did.
I think we see a huge number of indications of the compromises that were made in order for S2 to be made. One obvious one that has been talked about is being making in in NZ instead of LA, to save $.
But there's also the eight episodes instead of ten. And then the cast aspect. One downside of moving overseas was having to fly out and house the cast, not just pay day wages.
We knew immediately about Guz Khan not coming back, losing Ivan as a character. At the time I was sad but I thought it had the air of a pretty harshly practical call. If you went through the main recurring cast and said okay which character will affect the fewest things, has the least character interactions of anyone? It would be Ivan. (With the only competition being The Swede IMO, but he's Stede's crew and therefore a little more central.)
And then this season started and we got first The Swede sidelined and taken out of major scenes. And then I noticed that different members of the crew were simply absent for long stretches, like Wee John isn't around for ep 5 at all. And then Buttons takes flight.
Lucius and Pete aren't at the party for most of it. Fang isn't in the torture scene. Roach and Fang aren't in the bar. Etc. SCHEDULING IS HAPPENING.
The new characters are almost entirely played by NZ local actors, which is great, but also...cheaper.
In other words there are big signs that they did everything possible to give us a giant cast of almost everyone we love from S1, and cool new characters, in the most economical way possible.
And I'm grateful for it. I'm grateful we got S2, and it looks great, and it's well written, I'm having a blast, and we get to spend more time with this awesome cast.
But I also kinda think it needs to be said that the cost-cutting shows. That it shouldn't have been only 8 episodes, the pacing is off. That we miss every time someone from the ensemble isn't on screen.
That despite what they've put on screen looking very good, there's far less costuming budget, there's less elaborate sets, and it's a little disappointing. And it's clear it's not a lack of will or talent or vision but blatantly lack of money.
Look, streaming networks want brilliant shows that people love (that will get them to subscribe) but they very don't want to pay anyone to make them. That's like, the whole moment we're having right now.
Max puts out promos about how great it is to not have unions messing shit up in NZ. Well I have friends who are union costumers in LA and guess what union costumers did amazing last season. This season, well, I guess Stede got three whole shirts, so that's cool.
So I dunno. It's just stuff I think about. I'm not trying to be negative about the show in any way. I'm extremely happy with this season; I love it more than well, possibly any show I've ever been in fandom for.
But I see you, Max. You're cheap. You weren't that cheap when you were called HBO.

Guess who's on TV!
(Well, iPlayer until the 15th, that's when it airs on BBC One)
Hope Street episode 3.11, let's go!
Tumblr media
First of all, I'd say they did me dirty with this picture, but my university ID was exponentially worse.
Onto the spoilers!
Tumblr media
Our boy Matthew has arrived in Port Devine, looking a little concerned.
Tumblr media
For good reason when he's suddenly confronted by this lad, Dara.
Tumblr media
Ah, a fight which Matthew escapes by slipping out of his coat. (Pretty sure this is the take where we ripped it practically in two...)
Dara's questioned, he claims he's never met Matthew in his life. Hmm.
Police do some investigating (and some character stuff) before Dara makes his way to Matthew's mother (Louise)'s house to have a wee showdown.
Tumblr media
They both in a gang and Matthew's stolen a gun. Dara needs to get it back...
Tumblr media
Matthew's nay having it. "This is my way out. If they want the gun back, they have to let me go."
Tumblr media
Another fight. The gun goes off! (Poor Pete and I were convinced after take one to put some padding on. My arm looks bulky because I'm strapped up with squishy stuff and allergic to plasters so it has to be in a sock)
Tumblr media
Thank fuck no one was hurt. Dara gets the hell out of dodge -
Tumblr media
Leaving Matthew to contemplate his mortality. And other people's, but mostly his own.
Tumblr media
"Oh fuck, my bosses are gonna find me and murder me, oh shit. I'm far too young and pretty to die!"
Tumblr media
Time for Matthew and Louise to follow Dara's example and get the fuck out of here.
The police are now on the Halbridges' trail, but they discover the phone tracking them and leave it in a field.
Meanwhile, Dara's been arrested for drug dealing. He refuses to talk, clearly nervous.
Tumblr media
Ah, what's this on Dara's phone? So Matthew and Dara have been in a relationship for over a year now.
(The poor intimacy coordinator having to walk me through my just about second kiss in my entire life. And the third. And the fourth. And the fifth... Pete is a very sweet person. Made it all funny.) ("Relax your hand, Bodh. Just relax it. Open - open your fingers, just let me position your hand.")
They're both working for the same gang. Matthew was given the gun to hold onto by their bosses' and freaked out, running away with the weapon. His plan was to trade his freedom for the gun, but Dara was sent to get it back for the Brazier Brothers, notorious drug runners and gang leaders.
Tumblr media
These guys.
Unfortunately, now Dara's had to tell the Brazier Brothers that Matthew is refusing. They're going to kill Matthew and then Dara. Oh no.
But Dara has an idea where they might be hiding.
Tumblr media
At the caravan there's a standoff between the police and Halbridges. But when the Braizer Brothers are arrested, they're convinced to come out.
(Side note, my favourite picture of me, ever.)
Tumblr media
Oh no, the Halbridges are going to jail and Matthew's regretting his life choices.
Tumblr media
Matthew walked off to his new life inside a jail cell.
The end.
(This is where Niall Wright accidently sublexed my shoulder. To be fair to the man, I'd never mentioned it and he took his finger sliding in-between bone like a champ)
Tumblr media
Look, it's me!! I was on TV! Bit sad they cut pretty much all the uses of SSE (weren't allowed BSL because we still had to speak the lines), but I got to be queer and Deaf so that's pretty nice.

Hey you 308k(!!!) people who have watched Nerdy Prudes in less than three days:
First of all I love you! I love you, I love your excitement for this show, I love all of the love going around. I'm so proud and excited by how well this show our little fandom's been obsessed with for months is doing.
ANYWAYS.
Did you love it? Do you want more? Do you wanna maybe watch Steph and Pete fall for each other again, or see Grace be unhinged in a completely different context? Do you want to know who the hell most of those random people in "Hatchet Town" even were, or learn about the Lords in Black (why was the yellow one so excited about Pete being a Spankoffski?), the Black Book, and the Cult of the Starry Children? Do you want to meet two of the coolest people in all of Hatchetfield (who, believe it or not, haven't been in a stage show yet)? Do you want MORE BOPS written by Jeff and MORE KILLER STORIES AND BRILLIANT DIALOGUE written by the Langs, all of it delivered by the Hatchetfield musicals cast you know and love?
Then the (roughly) 230k of you who haven't watched all of Nightmare Time should check it out!
"But Brooke," you might say, "I tried to start with Episode 1 (available under the livestream tab on Starkid's youtube account) but the low quality of a zoom-call video really put me off!"
Okay, understandable. It didn't personally bother me, but I totally get it not being other people's jam. But I will say that the episodes get better in production quality as they go along, and I would try each one before giving up and moving onto the next. Nightmare Time 2, especially, is a completely different viewing experience from Hatchetfield Ape Man.
And here's the kicker: IF ENOUGH PEOPLE WATCH NIGHTMARE TIME 2, WE GET MORE OF THE NERDY PRUDES CHARACTERS!! We get more of Grace, Ruth, Richie, the Lords in Black, and the Black Book. And that's just the stuff that's been confirmed (the planned Grace episode of NMT 3 sounds like the completion of the teen slasher trilogy, so I imagine Steph and Pete will probably be in it as well).
So please, 230k Nerdy Prudes fans who have not watched Nightmare Time, do yourself and all of us a favor and get your Nightmare Time on!!
