I’ve been getting back into drawing stuff for Rhythm Doctor again because of the Act 5 hype, so here’s a silly comic based on Mic Check by ReneeDekobora2042!! It was one of the first RD fics I read when I first got into the fandom, and probably one of the best (definitely up there with Clipboard Notes, victor if you’re seeing this hi LOL) so I thought it would be nice to make a short comic of one of my favorite parts. More ramblings & bonus doodles under the cut :]

I started working on this about a month an a half ago, and initially I just wanted to work on this as a small silly wacky fanart project that was supposed to look more like this

So like every sane artist I decided to make it harder for myself

These were my favorite panels during the sketching phase but I had to change the last couple panels to reference 2-3N instead because it made more sense timeline wise. Might render these someday tho because I'm still attached to them lmao

what would gabriel’s human guise look like? is it any different from how hes portrayed in renaissance art? :3

quite a bit different! my idea about him kind of shifts around, but in general i go with something like this:

gabriel has one of the best human guises, but he does retain a couple features that betray his heavenly origin - the opalescent "jewelry" is actually bands of divine fire and his eyes are oversized for his face with reflective, sheep-like pupils (i imagine this is true for all angels, including raphael who is otherwise perfect in his guise). he doesn't emote very much, too used to having his face covered with feelings conveyed through his body or wings, and he doesn't bother doing anything with his hair lol (MAYBE putting it up sometimes at most)

he doesn't show it to v1 often, and he likely only did so the first time after v1 asked him about the statues of the guise that adorn his tomb. it's very strange for both of them (after v1's initial threat display lol), gabriel flooded with memories of his time as messenger and all the humans he met, while v1 itself is confronted by the first human face it's seen in a long, long time...they both sort of wordlessly agree it's best if he doesn't take it out afterward

its insane to me how baked in the concept of time is to the core of fhr. so much of it is about how the characters deal with it. step and ortega are at the heart of it, obviously, theyre both always comparing the past and the present, but even with other characters it bleeds through. just the inevitability of it all. i think time loop aus hit different in fhr because in a way, fhr already is a timeloop. no matter who you play, no matter how kind or cruel or safe or reckless you are, itll end the same way. youll always die. youll always fall.

its the same way when you go back to the rangers. as always, ortega finds you. theyll never let you go. will you come crawling back? bridge the gap, depend on others to keep you safe? or do you push them away, bite and scratch until theyre safely at arms length? it doesnt matter, of course. youve done both before. neither saved you. neither will save you, because youre a villain now; you cant escape it.

even with multiple endings and the many, Many different ways sidestep could end up (god theres so many ways sidestep could end up, there are so many steps in this fandom i have no idea how they all manage to stay unique and interesting but godspeed to yall), theres somehow always that underlying feeling of "it will always end this way". its a feeling thats incredibly close to fate. and that is fascinating for a choose-your-own-adventure game thats main draw is, for all intents and purposes, the amount of choice you do get. i like to think its a taste of what step feels like– the feeling that you cant run from whats coming for you, yk?
