I made a longer post on kofi about the living and art sales situation, but the long and short of it is: we still don't know what's going to happen! We're staying with a good friend for now, but the future is very uncertain. We're just doing our best to roll with the punches, bloom where we're planted, and any other applicable metaphors.

This isn’t a new observation but I’m rewatching The Face of Evil, and truly, s13 + s14 are visually and atmospherically immersive perfection. Leela’s home jungle is so believably an entire world, and it’s just as much the sound design as it is the “miles” of black behind the trees. I think of Terror of the Zygons, of the Antarctic base in The Seeds of Doom. The miles of the Gallifreyan Capitol, the wastes the Storm Miner trundles. You’re not looking through a TV screen, you’re looking through a window.

S18 (especially The Leisure Hive) came close to recapturing a lot of this same magic, but also more started the precedent for the Davison era’s harmony between textual immersion and the more blatant artifice (theatrically so) of the visuals and sets. And obviously I love that flavor to death, I could go on for ages (s18-s21 diehard here), but it’s a very different sort of magic. Nothing quite like Planet of Evil, this, or Robots of Death ever happened again?

Traken, the Kinda world, Manussa, they’re all so unreal but celebrated, and in such a wonderful grind with the ambiance set by the music and sounds, by the immersive stories, by the way the characters inhabit them. Leela’s jungle, by contrast, just feels fucking real? In the spookiest, offbeat way?
