María Inés Calderón (1611 – 1646 )

“A woman who apparently was not beautiful, but she had a lot of grace and charm. In addition to reciting, singing and dancing very well.”- Elvira Menéndez

María Inés Calderón, known as La Calderona and Marizápalos, was the most important actress in the Spain of the seventeenth century, who became the mistress of King Felipe IV and mother of his illegitimate son, Juan José of Austria. La Calderona was involved in a relationship with Ramiro Pérez de Guzmán, Duke of Medina de las Torres, at the time Felipe IV first saw and got smitten by the actress-singer on her debut at the Corral de la Cruz theatre in Madrid in 1627. But when the king got in the way, the lover had no choice but bow his head. La Calderona became the favorite of Felipe IV.

Enamoured of the red-headed actress, Felipe IV installed his lover in a balcony overlooking the square, a decision that flew right in the face of convention as these seats were meant to be the exclusive preserve of the aristocracy. After spotting her rival sitting in the posh seats, the queen Isabel de Borbón flew into a rage and threw La Calderona out of her love nest in the palace. To compensate, the rather sneaky king, then ordered that a secret balcony to be built under an arch. In this way, his lover could attend events at the Plaza Mayor and remain out of sight.

Upon the birth of her son in 1629, La Calderona lost the custody of him despite her protests. Her relationship to the king ended the same year. There were rumors at the time that her son was fathered by Ramiro Pérez de Guzmán. La Calderona was forced to become a nun against her will. Felipe IV ordered her entry into the monastery of San Juan Bautista of Valfermoso de las Monjas, in Alcarria, where the interpreter would lose contact with life, the theater, her son. In 1642, the King recognized Juan José officially as his son, and Juan José began his life's career as a military representative of his father's interests.

It was said that she died in closing, already under the name of Mrs. Maria de San Gabriel, Abbess. But it has also been written that she fled: that she managed, on the one hand, to escape from God's mandate and escape, along with a bandit, to the Sierra de la Calderona (Valencia) and, in another version, that she returned to Madrid, where she would welcome the guild of actors: « A kind of union that gave relief to interpreters who were in poor condition or who were already older. There seems to be data that helped her. Which would mean that she did not die in the convent as they officially said ».

The few concrete data of María Inés Calderón have served to increase the legend. Also regarding her family. It is not uncommon to find references to Pedro Calderón de la Barca as father of the creature. But far from it. It seems that, being very small, appeared at the door of Juan Calderón, a lender of the theater world and father of Juana, also an actress, although not as renowned as «La Calderona».

anyway yeah all my muses here have parents with actual names. feels like a small thing. and did i have to do that? no. no i didn't. i really didn't. but i've wanted for a while to develop these characters' parents, and that starts with giving them names.

does any of this matter? probably not. but i think this is a fun thing to consider for their characters and establishing more of where they each come from, even if a majority of these characters' parents are dead or otherwise not in their lives.

also goes without saying but a lot of my thoughts here are speculation or based on limited evidence in canon, since many of these characters' family backgrounds are just not explained, especially not in any significant detail.

anyway thoughts under the cut

spencer's parents: john and hannah middleton

i've actually had the idea in mind for like a year now that spencer's mom's name was hannah. if you know why.... keep your mouth shut. (kidding)

spencer's parents are dead. he killed them both in retaliation after years of abuse and neglect stemming from their genuine fear of their son's mental illness. basically everyone in town knows he did it, but there's very little chance of him being prosecuted for it. not because anyone thinks it was justified, though--more because, though everyone *knows* he did it, there isn't enough *concrete* evidence.

tony's parents: alejandro caballero and inés torres

so i've talked a little about tony's parents publicly, but not in a lot of detail. the main thing i wanna point out here is that neither of his parents' surnames are vargas. because i'm going all in on "antonio vargas is a fake name." vargas is the surname i gave him but yeah it's all fake babeyyy!!!!

forget if i've said anywhere publicly yet, but tony's legal name is oscar caballero torres! or as he'd mostly be referred to in the U.S., oscar torres. (not sure on exactly *what* specific national heritage his family has, but in at least most spanish cultures, people traditionally have two surnames, one associated with each parent, though in the U.S. for example they tend to go by their matronym. so yeah legally he'd be oscar torres.)

(the only reason i'm giving each of his parents one surname each here is simplicity, but their names would also follow this tradition.)

anyway, tony's father alejandro died when he was a young teenager, but his momma is very important to him and a major figure in his life.

jack's parents: charlotte townsend and william evans

so i mentioned earlier this year that i think it's very possible that jack's surname, townsend, isn't his *original* surname. and i've decided to just commit to that.

my original idea was that jack adopted the name townsend from one of his foster parents, possibly his first, as a way of symbolizing him leaving behind his old name and past and basically just. restarting his identity (which is also how him being trans flew mostly under the radar with his neighbors). i ended up dropping that, though, and instead i think townsend is his mom's maiden name.

jack's mom, charlotte, walked out on him and his dad when he was *very* young, and before that she wasn't super present in his life. i don't think she was actively abusive towards him like his dad was, but i also think she wasn't exactly mother of the year. (idk, i go back and forth on how sympathetic to her i am.)

ANYWAY i have a lot more thoughts on jack's parents that are best saved for another post, but basically. jack's mother left her shitty abusive husband and young child behind and started a new life, and jack took her maiden name as he grew when he started a new one as well. i doubt it was intentional on his part, and honestly i think it came down to an issue in the paperwork when he was entered into foster care.

jerry's parents: daphne and matthias pascal

so this is where i am nervously ignoring canon and just kinda doing what i want with the references to jerry's family while picking and choosing what i want from those references.

jerry's parents are a pair of old money types who settled in delaware, and who are definitely *not* happy with the fact that one of their children ran off to join a cult and hasn't spoken to them in well over a decade. his parents cared less about who he was as a person and more about what he could do to further their legacies and reputations. the cult honestly probably started in part as rebellion against them.

in present day, jerry's parents don't know where he is, and he's happy with that. occasionally, the private investigators they hire to try and find him get close to figuring him out, but he's gotten good at evading them.

rosa's parents: elisa vasquez and lorenzo rivera

again, tying in with what i mentioned about spanish surnames under tony's section, rosa's full legal name would be rosa rivera vasquez. ditto for her parents having more surnames, though i'm sticking just to the ones they would've passed down to rosa.

anyway, rosa has two loving parents who genuinely care about her and are active parts of her life, though she has been making a rather significant effort to be more independent and not rely on them as much as she did when she was younger. (ignoring the fact that she *is* still very young.)

i won't pretend they've never had conflict, but for the most part their relationship is healthy and strong. her parents love her and she loves them.

amelia's parents: celeste o'brien and james ambrose

amelia was raised by a single mother, which is where a lot of her drive to be a strong woman and handle everything herself comes from. i originally considered the idea that her father was mostly absent from her life, but i've decided to scrap that idea. she knows her father and has spoken with him, and he has made an effort to be part of her life. he didn't walk out intentionally, and he's been trying to make it up to her.

buuuut she's not particularly impressed with him. she doesn't want to give him a chance, so for the most part she's just. not going to. she has a relationship with him and it's mostly cordial, but she doesn't really get along with him. her relationship with her mother is similarly tense, but they're definitely closer than she is with her dad.

she is, however, *very* close with her aunt natasha. natasha was there for amelia when no one else really was when she was a kid, and she never forgot that. hell, half the reason she moved to this shitty little town in georgia was to be there for her aunt.

sabine's parents: amanda and joseph lemoyne

yeah, i finally named the gas station owners. about time! i could only deal with calling them pops and mamaw for so long.

sabine's parents were a pair of right-wing doomsday preppers who neglected their daughter severely in favor of preparing for an apocalypse and other conspiracy theorist bullshit. they did their part to prepare sabine as well, but for the most part, they tended to just... have her take care of the home while they dealt with everything else, very rarely giving her the support she needed. generally, the lemoyne's had a reputation in town for being very strange but well-meaning, though, and very few people raised a fuss about anything they said or did.

(and yeah, the fact that the lemoyne's were right in some respects about some of what they were paranoid conspiracy buffs about doesn't take away from their rancid-ass beliefs or their treatment of sabine.)

PERSONALITY. 

inés is a type a personality through and through. not only is she academically gifted, she’s quick witted, accomplished, capable, and not to mention incredibly humble. it’s hard to let go of a massive ego when you’ve been told all your life how much you’re going to achieve. while such praise may have caused others to burn out, her drive became her super power. no feat was too large for inés osorio to face. it just come from being conceited however, ever since she was a child she has had to fight for the things she wants and she’s carried that spirit with her into adulthood. she’s had to bare her teeth a few times to have her way and she’ll do it again. while that may make her come across as intense and overly zealous when it comes to her studies she believes if you can’t keep up then you can get out of the way. she’s earned her right to be at the table and she won’t apologize for the things she’s had to do to get there. there is more to inés than her over achieving mean girl persona though. she’s introspective and curious and enjoys to have deep conversations. bonus points if you can actually challenge her as she is prone to growing bored rather quickly. in spite of herself the glitz and glamor of the upper class still impress her and it can be charming if she’s caught letting her guard down. still, she has high standards for herself and those she keeps around her so don’t be too shocked if she’s quick to write you off. 

THE PAST. 

inés's parents had married young after her mother had become pregnant. truth be told their relationship was fresh and they didn't know each other that well but they shared the same dreams and that had to count for something, right? he played piano and wrote songs while she was a singer. and so, ximena and mateo moved their small family to sunny california from mexico. inés was too young to remember their time in their home country but she thinks about the cramped apartment in san diego's downtown more than she would like to. it was fine, at first. mateo worked two jobs to keep the household afloat while ximena took care of the baby. she would come home from school to her mother cooking and sundays after morning mass were full of laughter and music. the osorio household was a place for love and light.

except ximena was never able get past an audition and mateo never caught his big break. after years and years of waiting to be recognized for their talents, reality began to sink in for the couple. tensions rose as ximena refused to work but insisted they sent money to her family in mexico and mateo had to put his foot down as they barely had enough for themselves. the two fought often. they would do their best to have their arguments when inés was asleep but children pick up on more than their parent’s think. eventually they stopped hiding it. the two never left each other and inés always wondered if it was their own way of punishing the other.

when she began school, her teachers noticed how much more excelled in class than her peers. inés had an impressive memory and was incredibly well spoken for a child. her english was far more advanced than any other children her age who learned it as a second language. after her parents made the discovery they were raising a tiny genius, ximena went crazy. she pulled inés out of the public school she had been attending and used the rest of their family’s money to enroll her in a private one on the other side of town without consulting mateo. he was justifiably upset with her new treatment of their only child and ximena told him exactly where to stick it because inés was special and, more importantly, a chance out of this life they were in.

while inés’s parents were initially upset that their prodigal child was more interested in being a girl than kissing one (she would realize a few years later she didn’t mind doing that either though), they were ultimately accepting. her accomplishments in school had brought them so many gifts even if they were still making ends meet. ximena would push inés. if she failed, affection would be withdrawn to show there was no room for anything less than perfection. her daughter was going to be someone whether she wanted to or not. inés didn’t mind. she liked being the best. she liked the power that it gave her and she learned how to harness it. she was just as good as her peers who lived in big mansions— no, she was better. 

mateo left to move back to mexico inés’s sophomore year of high school. he had been talking to a woman his family had found and decided would be a “more suitable” wife and the two developed feelings for each other. ximena didn’t even look at him as he left, but later that night she crawled into bed with her daughter. instead, she focuses all of her time and energy into her daughter. she becomes overtly critical of anything inés did from what she wore to what she ate to who she spent her time with. her study sessions become longer and she signs up for more activities to excel at. there isn’t room for failure or burnout. inés to this day considers ximena to be tough but fair although from an outside perspective her parenting methods are definitely questionable. she stressed how vital it was for inés to succeed and to get a good job so the two of them could have the life “they” deserve.

THE PRESENT. 

inés settled into ogden university with ease. not long after her interview she was offered a full ride and she knew she would be a fool to turn it down. the undergraduate program was a walk in the park. she wanted to focus on buffing up her resumé before going to harvard, anyway. befriending greer and her group of friends was an added bonus. it can be hard to tell what inés’s true intentions are but she proved herself to be loyal to the golden girl so it didn’t matter what the rest of them thought. with her dear friend gone, inés stays skeptical as things are most definitely not what they seem. she can’t stop the world from turning though and even if she could she wouldn’t want it to. 

HEADCANONS.

extracurricular activities (oh boy): captain of the rowing team and currently filling in as coxswain, cheerleading team (co captain), undergraduate student council, pre law association, and mock trial.

cw: drugs. the type to say no to a cigarette because smoking is bad for you then immediately do a line of coke.

hates animals!! dogs have too much energy and she’s allergic to cats and she isn’t fond of anything with scales. if she isn’t interacting with something that is bipedal and can talk she’s getting out of there as soon as possible.

it isn’t that inés doesn’t appreciate the arts, it’s more after watching her mother and father’s lives fall apart due to the dream they were chasing she feels contempt for them. she learned from a young age only certain people were allowed to succeed in the field.

she’s the kind of person you would want around during a crisis. inés is very good at remaining calm and talking people down before any hysteria hits. 

was very much a regina george type in high school. prom queen, top of her class, and casually cruel. that hasn’t changed much. 

inés doesn’t actually like rich people but she likes and believes she deserves their lifestyle. after being surrounded by them for much of her life she’s come to the conclusion they’re not very bright and most of the time not worthy of her respect.

El criterio que primó es que Gerda fue usado por doña Gerda misma en la autoría de sus muchos trabajos académicos como traductora professional y profesora de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Técnicamente Jorge Camilo con Gerda y Edgard eran medio-hermanos pero, como en mi caso con mis hermanos y hermana, ninguno de ellos jamás usó semejante diferenciación.

procuradora, Bertha Díaz Garzón, encargada de despacho del Ayuntamiento de Petatlán. La tarde del lunes, Bertha Díaz encabezó una conferencia acompañada de la secretaria general, Yolanda Fernández Sierra, el tesorero propuesto como alcalde interino, Leopoldo Castro Buburrón, y el director de Seguridad Pública, Víctor Manuel Ortiz. El alcalde postulado por el PRI, Perfecto Javier Aguilar Silva, tiene licencia para participar en el proceso de Morena para buscar ser candidato a diputado local. El sábado 6 de enero, narró la sindica, a las 8 con 20 minutos de la noche, un grupo armado disparó contra civiles que se encontraban en un palenque. “Es importante señalar que no se trató de un enfrentamiento entre grupos criminales, sino de un ataque contra civiles desarmados con un lamentable saldo de 13 muertos y 22 heridos, entre los que se encontraban hombres, mujeres y niños”. Dijo que el municipio no tiene competencias en investigación ni procuración de justicia en delitos federales, por lo que no estaba en condiciones de señalar responsables del ataque. “Condenamos enérgicamente estos actos, mandamos nuestras condolencias a los familiares de las personas fallecidas, entre quienes se encontraban amigos, familiares y personas que nada tienen que ver con el conflicto entre grupos delincuenciales de la región”, dijo la funcionaria municipal. “Solicitamos a las autoridades federales y estatales su intervención urgente e inmediata para garantizar la seguridad física de la población y la prevalencia de condiciones de paz”. Agregó que, como un servicio a la comunidad, hicieron una relación de las víctimas con información que han recibido y recabado de hospitales, funerarias y familiares de afectados con la finalidad de que la sociedad tenga certeza del paradero de sus seres queridos. La Fiscalía informó el domingo 7 de enero que, según sus primeras investigaciones, al palenque llegaron integrantes del grupo criminal liderado por “El Gavilán”, quienes agredieron con armas de fuego a integrantes de otro grupo delincuencial encabezado por “El Ruso de Petatlán”, ambos generadores de violencia y que mantienen una disputa por el control de la zona. La institución sólo reportó el asesinato de seis personas y 13 lesionadas. Y esta noche anunció que, por medio del Ministerio Público, requerirá al municipio informes y documentación que sustente la cifra de asesinados y lesionados. De acuerdo con reportes federales, Edilberto Bravo Barragán “El Gavilán”, es exlíder de los Caballeros Templarios y creó en la Costa Grande una célula criminal conocida como Guardia Guerrerense, que mantendría alianza con el Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG). Edilberto Bravo fue detenido y condenado a 50 años de prisión en 2016 por secuestro, pero fue liberado luego de que el magistrado del Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Guerrero, Benjamín Gallegos Segura, revocó su sentencia, según acusó en septiembre de 2022 el entonces subsecretario de Seguridad Pública Federal, Ricardo Mejía Berdeja. DETIENEN A DOS VINCULADOS CON LA MASACRE La Guardia Nacional detuvo a dos sujetos que estarían relacionados con la masacre en el palenque de Petatlán, confirmó el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador en Acapulco.

La Fiscalía de Guerrero informó este martes por la noche de la detención por parte de agentes de la Guardia Nacional de Gregorio N y Nicandro N en la zona rural de Petatlán. La Guardia Nacional como primer respondiente y en pleno acatamiento al artículo 16 constitucional, puso a disposición de esta institución de procuración de justicia a Gregorio “N” y Nicandro “N” por su probable participación en un hecho delictuoso”. Agregó que la situación jurídica de las personas detenidas se resolverá dentro del término legal con apego a los derechos humanos. La detención del ganadero Gregorio Rodríguez Villa y Nicandro, uno de sus trabajadores, se habría llevado por la mañana en su rancho localizado en Juluchuca, una población ubicada a 10 minutos de la cabecera de Petatlán. Ambos fueron trasladados al puerto de Acapulco. La detención provocó la movilización de un centenar de vecinos que trataron de evitar que las patrullas de la Guardia Nacional salieran de la comunidad. A las tres de la tarde, los pobladores se trasladaron a dos puntos de la carretera Acapulco – Zihuatanejo, en el crucero de Santa Rosa y a la altura de El Cayacalito, para bloquear la circulación. En el primer punto retuvieron a dos patrullas de la Guardia Nacional y en el segundo atravesaron sobre la carretera una pipa de gas como medida de presión para pedir la liberación de los detenidos. El bloqueo carretero terminó alrededor de las 8 de la noche. El testimonio de un poblador recogido por el reportero Lenin Ocampo indica que Gregorio Rodríguez es ganadero de la región y que su delito ha sido no alinearse con un grupo delictivo. En la conferencia de prensa de esta mañana en Acapulco, el presidente reprochó la movilización de los habitantes de Juluchuca y relacionó la detención con la masacre del palenque municipal de Petatlán, perpetrada la noche del sábado 6 de enero: Ayer se detuvieron a tres presuntos delincuentes muy cerca de donde se dio el enfrentamiento en Petatlán y sale la gente a apoyarlos y a tomar la carretera. Eso no, no es por ahí. “Acabo de hacer mención a lo de este palenque clandestino donde lamentablemente perdieron la vida unas personas. Se está haciendo una investigación, parte de eso es a lo que me refería de lo de las detenciones”. Aunque aclaró que no se tienen los elementos de prueba necesarios, pero que es parte de las investigaciones. E insistió en la versión de la Fiscalía de Guerrero: Todo parece que es una confrontación entre grupos pero se están trabajando las investigaciones no adelantemos hipótesis ni mucho menos las resoluciones que corresponden a las autoridades”, dijo el mandatario. El lunes por la tarde, 48 horas después del ataque, la síndica procuradora y encargada de despacho del Ayuntamiento de Petatlán, Bertha Díaz Garzón, informó en conferencia de prensa que no fue un enfrentamiento entre criminales sino un ataque directo contra civiles desarmados con un saldo de 13 muertos y 21 heridos.
