two for one deal! bc kenta loves to annoy ryuga hehe
[ID: Digital bust fanart of ryuga and kenta. Kenta is standing close to ryuga, his face tilted up and his hand on his chin, looking at ryuga and smiling. He says: "We make a pretty good duo, huh?" Ryuga is looking at him in annoyance, tugging on a piece of Kenta's hair while answering: "Shut up kid." End ID.]

It’s fanfic day-
Okay so if you haven’t noticed today I went around and dropped an ask in like… most of my beyblade mutuals (and some nonmutuals I think?) inboxes and asked them for their favorite fics. If you didn’t receive an ask but wanna do this, like, go ahead? I probably was just like “oh hmmmmm idk if this person wants me in their inbox”
But! I’m also gonna take this chance and gush about some of my favorite beyblade fanfics, because I recently buckled down and actually got through a lot of the ones I wanted to.
Gotta start with “The Previous Wielder (Is Just a Guy)” by @artisadie (or squirt1254 on ao3). The fact Sadie has not published any more fics is criminal. Like, Sadie, it’s an actual crime that you gave me this fic and then nothing more. The dynamic written between Gingka and Ryo here is so compelling, managing to merge a serious reflection with their combined goofiness. It’s just really well-written, and also pretty short for anyone who wants a quick read.
My government mandated @lady-lazagna fic is “Christmas with Kenta” (on ao3) which I think is the first one I read of hers. A lot of her fics are very good, including Wounded Pride and especially the second chapter of Metal Mayhem, but I think this is the first work of hers I read, and one that really stuck with me. I like the way it manages to handle this sort of bittersweet feeling, choosing a slightly darker route of Ryuga’s future post-canon if he stayed alive, but also bringing it this very mundane feel. I think it’s an amazing work of both characterization of a wide cast, and also masterfully balances its tone.
As for another Kenta and Ryuga bonding Christmas themed fic, we’ve got “so this is christmas (the war is over)” by @little-christmas-song (ssongpyeon on ao3). Once again, Song, this is active violence against me for this to be your only published fic. Your writing style is addictive. This fic does focus a lot more on the dynamic between Ryuga and Kenta, and is a much more mellow piece taking place further post-canon. Song has a really good understanding of language, and their writing style is honestly incredible. I really love the way it sneaks it characterization for some of its supporting cast as well, and I think it’s just a really chill read overall.
And now for another absolute legend of the ao3, we have @starfishes-and-watercolors or CallmeCloudyorVal on ao3. There’s a lot of fics of theirs I like, from their Tithi fics to Adoption AU, but after thinking for about a minute I found that I could confidently say “The Working Dead” is my favorite fic of theirs. The fic focuses on Madoka and Yuki just having conversations with each other while being absolutely stressed from work at the WBBA, and I can confidently say this fic definitely influenced a fair few headcanons I have for them. It really helped me realize just how good of a dynamic these two could have, and is a pretty fun read for me just for that. The fic is just also very funny at many parts, especially when Yuki and Madoka get the closest to murder.
Lightning round! “Temple Tetris” by DinoSohn (on ao3) is a short humorous piece about Dynamis. It gave me a good laugh, and will probably do the same for you.
“Spicy sweet potato chips” by @ladyryukyo (mademoiselle1 on ao3) is also just a quick work about Ryo that I enjoy, and it focuses on Kyoya and Ryo’s dynamic. It’s got a pretty humorous concept, and executes that humor really well. I like the mundane insanity it has.
It was hard to choose for @heybeyby (candiedshekelsss on ao3) because I really enjoyed “A Leaf-Colored Contemplation” (btw, banger title) but I gotta go with “Fallen Down Where The Dead Boys Go” (seriously wtf is up with all your titles slapping???). How could I not, I got so much lore for this fic given to me and so much fear placed into me. This is a Shogun Steel fic, and a more plot heavy one at that, but if you’ve watched Shogun Steel I can’t recommend this fic enough. It has really good narration for each character so far, and a lot of good character building as well. I am so excited for where this fic will go, and especially excited for the characterizations of Maru and Ren we’ve gotten so far, and where those will go too.
At this point I have started to forget who I’ve mentioned by now and who I haven’t. Gonna come clean and say I am writing this post ahead of time, on google docs, and I’m still getting lost.
Time for some longer multichapters!
First off, I’d like to mention “From Different Eyes” by @masterofdemise (on ao3). This fic is about Dynamis and Pluto post-canon swapping bodies, and has a lot good character building for underutilized canon characters (Elysse counts). But most of all, this fic absolutely embraces the humor of the situation, and the humor of the characters. It is constantly leaning into the absurd, and the humor is written with the characters well in mind. I could go on for a while about how humor is used in this fic, but it absolutely makes it worth the read even if you aren’t interested in Dynamis or Pluto.
“And then there were 4” by @voidix (on ao3) is likely one of the most plot-heavy beyblade fics I’ve read. It takes a lot to commit to making a plot-heavy multichapter, and the set-up and revelations so far in this fic are quite fun. It has a lot of that beyblade absurdity, and I’m glad I read it.
@andro-dino has many good fics, though I don’t think my favorite choice will surprise anyone, as I wrote a fic inspired by it! “This Body of Mine?” (on ao3) Is a short, Toby-centric fic, and I think it’s just a really sweet character study. I don’t really know what to say about it other than it’s a good read, and definitely one anyone interested in Toby’s fanon character growth should read (we are seriously giving this dude so much).
@qloof has got a lot of fics published, but the one I’m gonna choose is “King and Tithi’s Pranking Adventure” (on ao3)  I just found it genuinely funny and sweet. I hope another chapter gets written, but if not, it’s still a solid read for anyone who’s interested, and has really fun characterizations for the legendary blader cast.
“Hagane” by @mellythedork (on ao3) is also a very neat fic, I love the magic it embraces for the mfb universe, and a lot of the writing is very cool. I’d definitely encourage you to read it if you’re a Ryo fan like I am, or just want to see Doji get his shit wrecked.
For my last fic, I wanna quickly shoutout “Gesso” by Arcylic (on ao3) which without a doubt really made me interested in what Team Starbreaker dynamics could be like. It focuses on Zeo and Jack’s dynamic, and has a lot of really fun dialogue between the two. I can bet this fic started a wave of people absolutely ready to try their own hand at the starbreaker dynamic.
Now, I can’t very well let the opportunity to talk about myself just pass me by. I have 53 published beyblade fics, so you can imagine it might be a bit hard for me to choose.
I will say if you’ve watched Shogun Steel, even just a bit, and haven’t read “Stolen Pride” yet, I’d absolutely encourage you to. Since I started in this fandom, I’ve really tried to make narratives about feminism that deal with the issues of the show in an in-universe manner. “Stolen Pride” is my newest work to explicitly focus on that, and I’d love people to read it and tell me what they enjoyed and didn’t. It’s a discussion I really want to have.
“Darkness in Triplicate” is one of my longest Hikaru-centric works, and a bit of a dark read, but I think absolutely worthwhile. I have always wanted to pull off adding Hikaru into the Masters plot, and I think with this fic I finally managed to do so.
Finally, I have to mention “By the Dead of Morning/I’ll be Better for It/And then Fortified I’ll Rise” which is the Faust joins Starbreaker early AU. I put likely way too much effort into this fic, and I really hope I’m not banned from other secret santas because of it (not that I’ll promise to not do it again…). It isn’t entirely my headcanons, but I really like the writing I did for this, along with the concept itself. It’s one of my longest works yet, and the fact I pulled it off makes me so proud of myself.
If you read this far, congratulations! You’re insane! But I’m really glad you read all this, I really appreciate a lot of beyblade fic writers, and actually committing and reading all the fics I’ve wanted to was a really good time. I hope if any of the fics on this list interest you, you go and check them out! And maybe leave a comment for the author. We’ve got an honestly impressive ficwriting community for how tiny this show is, and I can’t wait to see if even more people join! Yknow… so long as they’re not the type of people I gotta use that new mute function on… BUT WE’RE BEING POSITIVE AND HEY
We got a lot of cool fics :)))

looks like Imma follow Sato's career from now on... like he needs to be cast in shows ASAP, IDC if he doesn't reprise his role as Keiwa in Geats. His character is just the show's punching bag anyway, better he leave Keiwa (and be cast as another Rider-character for Rider like Otoya (Kiva)-Kazumin (Build)
also he has no qualms kissing fellow men!
Tumblr media
Oi BL people here's a good actor that has no problem kissing men!!!
Oh man, it gets better... there's a vid of him on youtube with a guy... If you didn't know it was just for shits and giggles you'd think it was a lovey dovey gay couple living together
Tumblr media
You deadass can't tell me they weren't playing up the gay for our entertainment (blond guy's Ryuga, btw)
It starts innocently enough, them just playing Smash Bros... then they start cuddling in bed... the other guy calls Ryuga cute... then they lay on the bed together (still cuddling) while talking...
Then Ryuga pulls the covers over them and the other guy fucking laughs as you go wtf what's happening and the screen goes to black
The first time I saw this I was just "??????????" because this be gayer than some of the BLs I've seen and they don't even kiss, man. And Ryuga straight (heh) up uses the word icha-icha which is just... wtf y'all.

hani talk abt Ryuga and Gingka I want to hear what you have to say
First of all thank you Axel for enabling me get settled and get ready for this
Okay so first
Gingka Hagane
Tumblr media
Where do I begin Gingka MY BOY MY SUNSHINE he’s beyond a comfort character at this point I see him and I smile. Fun fact back when mfb aired and I was 9yo I used to crush on him but now he is like a little brother to me. I know the general opinion is that he has older brother vibes and it’s very logical why people say that but to me he’s my younger brother who has done nothing wrong ever in his entire life.
Let’s go through the fields I marked systematically to give this a sense of structure
He’s like a blorbo to me: Hw is THE BLORBO I love him so much he’s a literal sunshine can you look at Gingka and not smile? I don’t think so unless you’re more miserable then doji which phew.
Everyone but me is wrong about him + he’s deeper than he seems + the fans have done him dirty belong together because a lot of people especially back in the old fandom days used to reduce him to burgers and friendship or whatever but he’s so much more than that which you can see especially in fusion he gets angry he loses his mind he feels lost at times he’s so much deeper than what most people make him out to be and I get him he is my little brother.
Didn’t get enough screen time: now you might be thinking hani you’re insane and it’s true I am I know he’s in every episode almost but that’s not enough I needed more okay idcidc give me my boy
I think the rest is self explanatory but you know what I’ll say it his wins being dismissed because power of friendship is so unfair especially when fans compare him to Tyson Granger who half the time wins and doesn’t even know what he’s doing like you’re okay with that but not Gingka who has been training forever? Yeah hypocrisy much. Now obviously I’m biased but at the same time Gingka’s battles are so fun to watch and you can see a lot of strategy if you actually pay attention.
Not to let my inner kpoppie jump out but stop sleeping on Gingka he’s actually such a fun and cool character. I love him.
Now onto
Ryuga
Tumblr media
There’s a lot to unpack here. First of all when I originally watched mfb I hated him when I watched when I was 14 he was okay when I watched when I was 16 I became obsessed with him and since then nothing has changed. I can’t help it even if you want to hate him you can’t deny that he’s just so enjoyable to watch. To this day he is the coolest character I’ve ever seen in a series. Like look at his introduction in fusion and his role in the entire season you cannot convince me you didn’t think he was cool like there is just no way you’d be lying to me and to yourself. The 3 headed purple dragon that spins backwards and can steal powers that’s cool af and ryuga himself with his confidence and the fact he is the funniest bitch on the show. Like even if you hate him he will make you laugh with his one liners. And when you thought he couldn’t get cooler they somehow did make him cooler with Meteor L-Drago in metal masters. I know a lot of people think he shouldn’t have played such a big role in masters but well… I think masters starts getting much more fun when he appears I think he should’ve appeared in masters even more that’s my controversial opinion for today. I really liked his role in masters too where he helped Gingka but in his own weird way. Their dynamic is so good in masters but that’s an essay for another day. And of course fury I can’t forget fury. He’s alive btw trust me.
He is a main character in my fic “and then there were 4” and I have to say he is hard to write but also I hate it when people reduce him to that overpowered asshole who hates everyone because that’s simply not true and there is a lot of evidence for that but once again that’s a whole other post. And also if you think about his backstory be it the manga or anime one (which we only got glimpses and implications on but still) you realise that although he is powerful even he fell victim to manipulation. Now obviously that doesn’t mean he hasn’t done anything wrong because he has but that doesn’t mean it’s the only thing he is. I really wish we got more time in the anime to explore the other side of his character more but even if not we can see that it’s there and I really hate when people ignore it.
As you can tell I’m very insane about these two characters and also their dynamic together but I’m already getting close to 900 words so if you read until here thank you so much
Send me characters

would you care to share why the ryuzaki theory doesn't make sense to you? i agree with you btw. aside from the fact that we know it was a design thing, i don't quite like it in terms of in-world theories either, because i don't see the point of it. there's no conclusion to it, and it's not like being this persona gives L some perks (on the contrary, I'd say). i'd still love to hear your reasons though.
I actually have discussed the theory many times, in great detail, and from different angles over the years. You can find my posts about this here.
But I suppose I have refined my opinion somewhat, even changed my mind on some things… So I can give you a summarised explanation:
Yes, you’re absolutely right. It wouldn’t even add anything to L as a character or the plot. People will point towards L lies, manipulation tactics, or how he uses the fact that other characters see him as weird against them, but none of this requires him to fabricate an entire “persona”. A persona with fake mannerisms, clothes he would never wear, shaved off eyebrows, fake dark circles under his eyes, eating habits he actually finds disgusting, a bad posture, etc, mind you.
It’s a given that “Ryuzaki” is partly a role he plays, yes, in the sense that it protects his real identity, but nothing in the story ties his tactics to that name and role in the way this theory assumes.
He does have two other roles: Light‘s friend from university who’s an avid Misa fan, and Matsuda’s drinking buddy. But if we think about it...what does that actually involve? What does he do?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He a) lies about his true intentions, and he b) changes his speech patterns. Sure, he lies as Ryuzaki as well, but there’s nothing about his speech pattern as Ryuzaki that stands out in any way. I’ve never seen anything about how he talks mentioned as part of the RPT, and for a good reason.
You could argue that he does play “Ryuga” and “Asahi” on top of his other fake persona, but the main point is that those two roles serve very obvious purposes. It’s plot-relevant, it either is or becomes extremely obvious that he was just acting, and he didn’t even change much about himself. It’s, from this perspective, pretty much the opposite of what people claim about “Ryuzaki”.
I agree that it wouldn’t benefit him to pretend to be eccentric. Even if we ignore that how he’s seen as weird has downsides as well (which is another thing O&O confirmed), we have to ask why he would bother. I would also ask why he would choose to, for example, eat only desserts or sit like he does. Because I do think his mannerisms add up to a personality that makes sense, but if we assume he does all that not simply because he likes doing it, it starts looking incredibly random.
If we bring “Another Note” into it, which partly directly contradicts the manga anyway, it makes even less sense, for a number of reasons (which I’ve discussed in the past as well). But one that stands out to me the most, is that part of the persona he supposedly has stolen from a character in that book, is something we see him do before his face reveal. So when we’re allegedly see the “real L”. But not only is L crouching, albeit on the floor, he’s also already wearing his iconic outfit and is barefoot.
Who is he performing for here?
Tumblr media
Another thing about that theory that doesn’t make sense is the claim that “Ryuzaki” intentionally tries to come across as unintelligent or incompetent. Which is just completely false. The task force is regularly impressed by his skills, Light meets him as the one other To-Oh student that had the highest scores, he’s known to be arrogant on occasion, and the most telling thing of all: when the task force starts to doubt him more and more, he obviously isn’t happy about it. (Note here that they doubt him because he seems obsessed with his “Light is Kira” theory to them, not because he’s eccentric.)
And now to the one thing some characters do get wrong about him: he acts as more innocent, less aggressive & less sure about his suspicions—so less dangerous—than he actually is.
Tumblr media
...If someone could tell me how this has anything to do with, for example, his aversion for shoes and socks, that would be helpful, haha. Light immediately sees through this anyway, and I’m pretty sure that if the RPT were true, it would’ve become clear via Light’s thoughts.
Characters believe the things I mentioned above for one reason: he’s verbally lying to them. He tells them that he actually only suspects Light to a very low degree, when we, as the readers, know that isn’t true. He also tells Light at first that he only approaches him because he wants his help to solve the Kira case (which, to be fair, is partly true, lol). And DN isn’t subtle at all: they tell us everyone’s little schemes in detail at some point. That’s actually something the manga is famous for: it has lots of text to give the readers explanations everyone can.
I think I would be more inclined to at least believe that he deliberately slouches to make himself smaller if we were shown that anyone in the story cares. But they don’t. So why should we? (I’ll admit that that idea isn’t completely outlandish to me—I mostly find it questionable when you try to combine this with every single habit that makes L stand out.)
One last thing I would like to talk about are Near and Mello. They’re just as eccentric as L is, and no one thinks that they fake their personalities. Why on earth should creators include two potential L successors with a similar air to them (Ohba’s words), when L fakes being strange anyway?
No matter how I look at it, it will always make more sense to assume that L simply doesn’t care what other people think about him, and that his comfort and preferences are more important to him than certain social rules.

Some observations
I was reading the MFB Manga a few days ago and I noticed how less hyped Kyoya is. Hell his match with Ryuga in the Battle Bladers is different. The anime fight I remember being intense and hyped. While the manga it wasn’t as intense or hype and he even had a whole different strategy going up against Ryuga. Then there’s the World tournament Big Bang Bladers. Again he was amped up and hyped. With every match with the exception of Gan Gan Galaxy straight two win matches. Yet, in the manga he lost to Masamune in the manga. Why do I get the feeling the animators / Story boarder / Director what have you REALLY favored Kyoya. As if he was their poster child? Anyways just something I noticed in regards to the difference between the manga and anime. Btw the difference between the manga and anime is HUGE.

Hey! It’s CureDeity (sorry tumblr makes me ask from my main). I am here, in your inbox today, to rattle my little empty coin can and ask you to list some of your favorite beyblade fanfics! I’m going around asking a lot of people this, so feel free to ignore it if you want, but I thought this might be a good way for people to shout out some of the fanfic they really enjoy! Btw, if you can, I thought it would be helpful to list which site this fic was on so others could find it easier if they wanted to. Also, if you’ve written any fic (or have fic ideas, as we all know, imagining the same scene over and over again is the bread and butter of a writer), please also take this chance to have a massive, amazing ego and tell us which of your fics you're most proud of/is your favorite/etc.
oooohh yes yes yes!!!
i'll preface this by saying that i haven't/don't read as much fanfics as i want to and there are just so many amazing stories being made in this fandom honeslty!! also as a non native english speaker i'm always blown away by certain phrases or paragraphs that just scrtch my brain just right it's really inspiring to see what people can do with words in different ways and styles.
So first i thought about @little-christmas-song's secret santa gift to me so this is christmas (the war is over) because TFRGEHYSJ IT IS!!! so good!!! i loved reading it, the ideas and just the feeling of the setting being so well built around me while i read it!! the characterization was so good and that's really amazing because ryuga is a hassle to write right imo,, anyway really amazing style and i can't wait for other pieces from Song (i can confidently say the next one will be a banger :>)
then from @artisadie, her fic the previous wielder (is just a guy) was so emotional and like so nuanced too? like grhjesk i loved it the vibes were really good and the structure made it really pleasant to read
so many others i have to read (i'm sorry guysss) but one fic from @lady-lazagna that i felt was really on point character wise was Pumpkin head it is such a good Yu characterization me think and also Tsubasa's character is really interesting when laz writes him!! makes me appreciate him so much more
I really really loved @andro-dino's toby fic this body of mine, it's been a while and i forgot a lot of it unfortunately but i remember being just !!!!!! aaaaa so touched by that fic like,, it's so well written and just hits close to home in subtle ways and just makes you love Tioby even more if that's possible
But but but i also really loved constants because,, hyoma. And axel writes hyoma so well and i just love him so much
okay now for your fic deity!!! i have,, a lot but i tried to make it a little smaller selection, here it is: first i think aquario's refrain (and also aquario's reawakening) really marked me it's such a good read and expendation on hikaru's character and just,, so so good,, the way you write hikaru's mental health issues and fights is just amazing!!
then i looked through ao3 real quick just now and i thought back to mayblade, the last day actually!! chapter 18: moon this. this gingka, the way he is written and also just how you managed to write so many characters and keep the rythm going and just write an amazing conclusion in general aaaa i still love it immensely
and last but not least Gingka's also adopted?! because man... MAN!!! this fic kncked me down kicked me and brought me back to life and gave me just one of the best aus and ryo characterization ever i just love it it's so good i think it might be my favorite deity fanfic! everything, the different times it takes place in, the phoenix bit especially and just,, the feels so many feels
alright and also i want to take this opportunity to thank the people i've talked to and shared my silly headcanons, ocs and au ideas with, it really is a huge source of joy for me to connect with people through art, through this weird 13yo show we're invested in for one reason or the other. And even though i struggle with writing/can never finish any wip or plan any story for some reason i just love thinking about aus and my shoyo being part of this world too, thinking way too deeply about hyoma or ryuga's characters :') so thank you everyone who has let met talk about all of that with them i love you <3 and thank you for sharing your little aus, ideas, your ocs and everything in between with me too, it's really an immense pleasure to read and exchange about them every time!!

once again thanks so much for putting up with my long ass ramblings, and you're welcome too :-) it actually took me a few hours to finish typing out all of it, plus that sort of post-script message afterwards, but it's not like i did it all in one go and there were breaks in between, so it's fine haha. i genuinely appreciate your concern though :') and that's the power of a relatively new fixation i'm really excited about i guess? wjdfjkcnvzs though i did cobble some parts of it from tentative posts and meta i've had in my drafts for a while now, so they're not totally things i had to come up with on the spot the other day at least. and that's okay (i do like what i've seen of your writing though), like obviously no pressure to feel as dedicated as i am when it comes to talking about my blorbos and glup shittos and whatnot - your actual passion for the media is what matters and that ofc manifests in cool different ways for each of us 🫡 [1/?]
(rest below)
ah i'm glad my description of build was intriguing enough for you! i hope i didn't seem like i was laying it on too thick with my constantly paralleling and comparing it to aa though - i mean at first glance, the narratives of aa and build could not seem more different, but in hindsight they both prominently deal with the concepts of truth, justice, corruption, redemption/atonement, identity, and family and friendship in their own ways (though ig that's probably true of kr in general, which then makes sense as for how toku would feature as a major element in many aa cases), even if not always perfectly in either series, but the effort is generally appreciated and still pretty compelling imo. and i really love aa too (i actually discovered your blog and your twitter through your very cool and beautiful aa fanart a while back, and then when i started watching cm, i was pleasantly surprised to also see your fanart in the tumblr tags, so it was nice to see some of my interests align with that of an artist i liked and followed <3) so finding ways to make analogies between whatever i'm currently into with one of my favorite franchises ever seemed like the natural next step haha [2/?]
also let me just say that ryusen is one of the few m/m couples to get me this obsessed apart from narumitsu and the like over the past several years, so that's really my best way of recommending them. again, idk if that will truly be your experience too by the end, but hopefully you'll still find something to like about their dynamic so my being this much of a shill for them won't feel embarrassing later on kjvbrhsfjs [3/?]
and yeah the rings!! they're far from the only gay-coded kr duo to get that kind of official romantic jewelry ofc, but they were apparently one of the first to really make it popular, so yeah their overall cultural impact sure is something to not be underestimated lol. and yup i've found that it's actually fairly common for many companies behind popular japanese media to go for selling that kind of merch, regardless of the actual canonicity of the pairing in question - like capcom, toei/p-bandai, etc. are aware that there's sizeable enough shipping fanbases for said media, and yeah ig selling that stuff while not having the guts to actually canonize said pairings can come off as pretty baity which is not really Great but well that's capitalism and queer/fujobaiting for you ig 😔 and here's what the sento/banjou rings look like btw: www . tumblr . com/kabutoraiger/190132806767/a-new-entry-into-the-growing-selection-of though i can't share a picture of it rn, their names (spelled as sento kiryu and ryuga banjo) are also inscribed on the insides of their respective individual rings :-) [4/?]
as for the 'silly little rabbit with a death wish' part of that post... hehe. you'll Get it if/when you get there >:) btw sento's given name literally means 'rabbit tank' and banjou's given name ryuuga means 'i'm a dragon' iirc (although the former having that name actually has a good in-universe explanation for once, but the latter definitely has no such excuse 😭) - tbh kr (+ other toku franchises i'm sure) is right up there with aa in terms of often corny yet still charming pun names, but because they're mostly in japanese and don't have localized english equivalents, one doesn't always get it right away but i suppose that's what google and wiki are for lol and actually one other particular example that's stood out to me so far is the name of the protagonist from ex-aid (the one played by iijima from odt, and yeah he, inukai, and akaso all knew each other from their time in kr because their shows also had its own crossover movie which also featured a bunch of other popular previous rider protagonists), which is the season immediately preceding build, because it's literally houjou emu - houjou as a pun on the japanese word for 'assistance,' and emu as in short for 'emulator' and derived from the japanese word for 'smile,' because guess what that season was about? doctors who are gamers. so yeah subtlety.exe nowhere to be found here lmao [5/?]
and hell yeah feel free to join me in the madness ^_^ toku can be one hell of a rabbit (lol) hole though, so it might lead you to become interested in other shows and movies of the medium/genre, in which case we'll be in this together as i'm also still beginning to get into other kr shows in particular (like after i finish build, i think i'll be focusing on the earlier heisei seasons of ooo, den-o, or maybe kuuga). as for where to watch it, i don't have one particular strong rec for a site rn, but what i've gone for are kissasian (kissasian . fm/info/kamen-rider-build) or toku . fun (toku . fun/post/watch-online-kamen-rider-build-full-series-49-episodes-english-sub) - obviously kissasian is more of a general site for which to watch asian dramas on, but that's if you don't mind ads popping up every so often and also the subs used are not very consistent like the source for one episode's translation could be a different team/person from the previous episode's, whereas toku . fun is specifically an archive for toku shows and movies, and is more consistent with the subs and is basically ad-free iirc, albeit i think i've also heard said subs on there described as 'usually the most accurate but also the least funny/entertaining' (ig bc tvnihon, their source, tends to err on the side of 'purism' when translating), so whichever is more your style in the end? i personally switch back and forth between the two sites, purely on the basis of if there's a translation i'm not satisfied with, even if i don't know how actually accurate it is lol on a side note, build's opening song 'be the one' by pandora feat. beverly is a nice jam, and it has an official english version where i think the lyrics (+ the original japanese version too) are something that would make one come to realize just how much they fit sento and banjou's relationship by the end of the show :') [6/?]
and thanks again for giving me the go-ahead to keep on rambling ^_^ moving on to build's female characters: there are only 2 really prominent female characters (a few others pop up here and there, or have relatively big roles for an arc or 2, but not throughout the whole show), misora (as mentioned before) and sawa. imo, both are treated decently, being fun and interesting characters with their own arcs not purely tied to the men (although obviously romance with men or the lack thereof are not inherent markers of the quality of a female character's writing, it's worth noting that neither of them are written as love interests (so you'll never get the sense that they get reduced to just that role) to any male character - but tbf, kr and other popular toku aren't really big on romance, even the het ones, in the first place, maybe bc of some japanese cultural conventions or something, but i've heard that the few canon m/f relationships that are present are usually not written very well, which is once more very shounencore of them lol - although unfortunately, there is a guy with a frankly kinda creepy and annoying parasocial crush on misora which most of the other characters don't care for either but it's still played off as comic relief, kinda larry-like in that sense if we're comparing it to aa again, and that's definitely one of the show's major drawbacks; i mean i still think build is overall worth the watch, and again, since you've gone through all of aa already, you'd be a veteran wrt this kind of trope, but regardless i think it's good to give some warning in advance to help you prepare for some of the shit that's about to go down) plus misora and sawa are eventually shown having a personal relationship/friendship with each other outside of the men too :-) however, overall they're still kinda underutilized and underdeveloped (sawa in particular) compared to the guys, plus neither of them are riders, though in kr, that's also definitely not an automatic indicator for whether a female character will be well-written or not, but then again, since we're both aa fans, i'm sure we're already very familiar with the feeling of seeing interesting and compelling female characters not get their full due from their writers, so based on that, build is survivable for sure 😔 [7/?]
and idk how well they would fare next to female characters from other kr seasons, but i also think it's worth pointing out that, for all that build's writer/s are clearly still not immune to misogyny, misora and sawa's overall writing doesn't come off to me as 'so misogynistic it becomes gay' in the vein of idk, naruto or death note, bc again, neither of them were touted as viable love interests to male characters before getting shoved to the side in favor of primarily focusing on homoerotic m/m relationships for most of the story only to still get together with those men in the end, and the only thing build was really marketed as in terms of its relationship writing was the 'heated drama between men' stuff so you already get a sense of what's in store for you from the start, and so ultimately you also don't really feel that annoyed or 'cheated' you know? [8/?]
and then on to akaso: that anecdote was from a full interview with him and inukai from when the show was just starting out - docs . google . com/document/u/0/d/1BwqtHLs5d8Vs2YCJA7XJW3TxhaGta8jo9huEo70ehq0/mobilebasic there's only very mild spoilers for the first episode and then vague allusions to what happens in the next couple of episodes or so, but if you'd still prefer to wait until you've actually watched those episodes to read it in full, i'll just copy here the most relevant parts for what we're talking about: "Inukai: The first scene we appeared together in was…. Akaso: Wasn’t it the first encounter scene? Inukai: [...] At that time, it was really hot at the filming location. During out spare time we just tried to preserve our strength, so we didn’t talk much. Now that I think of it, that day, you were staring at my face the whole time. Didn’t anyone notice? (laugh) Akaso: I was feeling dizzy from the heat, but among all the actors, I suddenly noticed Inukai-kun’s face and was captivated by it, thinking “wow, he is so pretty...” (laugh) The director, Tasaki Ryuuta pointed it out to me. I instantly came to my senses. I’ve never stared at any actress like that before, no matter how pretty, but at that time I suddenly became dizzy and just kept staring in a daze. Turns out, it was a heatstroke (bitter laugh). Inukai: You had a heatstroke because you sensed the dangers of my body (laughs). That was the moment I decided I shouldn’t let my guard down around you. Akaso: Nononono, I wasn’t trying to hit on you!! Inukai: (laughs) Akaso: Please stop, don’t add any unnecessary mental images to the word “partners” (laughs). But when Inukai-kun plays Sento, you get the feeling that he’s a very smart person mulling over a lot of thoughts in his head, I think he looks very pretty and cool. Inukai: That makes me happy, I think. Thank you." [9/?]
so there you have it lol. apparently akaso did use the word for 'heatstroke,' but the translator of this interview pointed out on tumblr that it seems like what happened had no actual severe effects on him, so it was likely just heat stress at most and he just said 'heatstroke' to clearly get the point across or something. in general, akaso during his time on build seemed to have a bit of a pattern of saying some kinda out-of-pocket things that would make one go "oh he really had the nerve to go there huh but like... is he wrong?" like when he also infamously claimed at two separate promotional events that banjou was the real 'heroine' of the story (which makes his previous comment to inukai to not add "any unnecessary mental images to the word 'partners'" funnier) 😭 during the first event, he was asked to introduce his character and then himself, and when he said banjou's name, he added that he was the 'heroine,' at which takada kaho (misora's actor) interjected and pointed at herself to say that *she* was playing the 'heroine' and there was a bit of back-and-forth between them as both kept insisting they were the 'heroine' (all in a lighthearted manner ofc) but in the end i think akaso got in the last word before he passed on the mic to takada so she could properly introduce herself this time, although she didn't bring up the heroine stuff again from what i could tell lol. the video i watched from that first event didn't actually have subs, but you could get the gist of it especially since they said 'heroine' in english. as for the second event, i also watched a bit of its video but i don't think i got to the part where he made the comment, so i only saw later on a screenshot from that same video where what he said was translated as "then, when i read the final script, it said that kaho takada was feeling down because banjo ryuga was the heroine." [10/?]
and. well... neither of them are wrong exactly fnsjngkbs. like ofc misora filled the obligatory female lead role, but generally speaking, it seems like it was obvious even among the cast that banjou, in addition to being the typical male co-protagonist like in a 'buddy cop' type of movie or show, was the one pretty much framed as the story's 'heroine,' imo in the style of a shounen anime or manga to sento's shounen protagonist position (well, the shounen animanga with well-written central m/f romances anyway), with the implication of being sento's love interest in all but name officially also. like... it's still very much subtextual but also wow talk about the lack of subtlety here too 😭 and at that second event, there was another comment he made that made me go "okay come on don't do this to us" but it's related to spoilery series-finale and post-series material, so it's probably best that i save discussing it for when you're done watching, if ever. but well yeah i'm kinda obsessed with his mind for all that like. thank you for continuing to help us fans not sound delusional via all these very enlightening comments (i mean aside from how heavy the subtext already was in the actual story) but also what's his issue 😭😭 [11/?]
btw build isn't actually akaso's first kr show - it's amazons, specifically its 2nd season, which also got released in 2017 some months prior to build's airing. amazons is one of those aforementioned more adult-oriented toku webseries and was meant to be a 'darker and more mature reimagining of the 1974 television series, kamen rider amazon,' but it got more mixed reviews overall compared to build, especially since iirc a lot of fans think it didn't handle said darker themes too well or something (there's cannibal cultists?? i think??? idk if akaso's character hiroki was one of them though). but the upside to it is that it was precisely his work on amazons that got akaso cast on build (from what i can tell, hiroki is nowhere near as dumb as banjou, but there's a similar delinquent vibe, albeit hiroki's aesthetic seems to be somewhat edgier). i find it funny though bc hiroki is apparently a 17 year old high schooler, then a few months later akaso made the jump to playing a 23 year old (which was his actual age at the time of filming) ex-pro fighter... the range of this man jwkfjksfdlms [12/?]
on a final side note about something that's not really relevant to all that other stuff but still kinda funny: i just remembered that apparently back when cm was airing, and that moment in ep. 2 (?) where adachi forces the elevator doors open to ask kurosawa out to dinner happened, people were commenting "well that's kamen rider training for you" and yeah i definitely believe banjou could/would have done something like that. though he probably would have punched the doors in the process too, or because he's a dumbass, he might also let himself get accidentally hit by the closing doors and then that's when he'd punch them in response lmao also i think i'll save my further thoughts on the kamen rider yuri and also the few canon lgbt+ characters the series does have so far + the varying qualities with which they've been written for later messages, bc once again this has gotten far too long and there's already a lot of things here for you to process and respond to so. thank you so much again and bye for now 🙏🏼 [13/13]
thank You again for all the info omg theres so much detail again ur a legend..!! reading it is so fun too i can rlly tell u like the franchise a lot that makes me happy ty for sharing all this w me 🥺 and actually to update u i watched a couple of eps since ur last asks (currently on ep8 kdjfksj i did a littol binging) and 1) it is Very different in tone from what i was expecting! i thought itd be like . moody and serious action etc but its actually rlly silly and thats a huge plus for me i love me some silliness always and 2) did take a bit of getting used to the format (+ to akaso and inukai in these roles theyre so different from cm and odt How are these the same guys) but honestly im rlly enjoying the buildup of the mystery?? and the charas are v endearing i care them already. also i cannot believe they dropped this one me in ep *ONE*

LIKE HELLO??? all i could think at first was "this is so nrmt in turnabout goodbyes coded" with the whole "i believe in you" thing but goddam . u werent kidding about these two huh. i get why the rings now i get it. Man. but yeah big fan of their dynamic so far !! and a little unrelated but im hoping they keep up the bit w banjou figuring out best matches in 1 second its my favorite thing rn fkdjsjfjdfhs
(also also this bit im just . thinking. a lot. kind of a crazy line to drop in the middle of all the silliness isnt it 👁👄👁)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway . onto misora and sawa omg theyre so good too ???? misora esp shes so funny and i keep wondering when theyll get into her whole powers deal its been on my mind since ep1 ........ these two are def not getting as much screentime ive noticed but at least the times they show up are great so far and none of that forced romance stuff which is what im used to sadly so ill take it 👍 just hope we do get to their backstories too eventually or im gonna be :(
also little cut to the villains too since theyre p prominent but although i already figured gentoku was involved somehow from the start i cannot for the life of me figure out what blood stalks deal is???? like is he just there for the drama of it all . whys he kind of helping the guys what does it Mean-
THE INTERVIEWS HELPJFKDJF ive heard legends of mr akaso eiji and his out of pocket commentary im understanding now ..... that "heroine" thing is Crazy though like surely he had to have known the implications right ????? doesnt he know that stuff is dangerous to fans come on man 😔 ur right abt the range tho im already so impressed by his and inukais acting in here since its so different from the charas they played in cm and odt but still p similar in how they do emotional scenes so im enjoying seeing those 👀
i think ill keep watching bc mostly i just. Really need to know what the mystery is (and still that "silly little rabbit has a death wish" thing, tho im starting to have a hunch about who its referring to.........) so yeah maybe ill have more liveblogging updates for u next time if ur interested in seeing my reactions akfjkdsjf
(before i go one last thing . ACE ATTORNEY REFERENCE???????)

I’ve been rewatching some MFB: Explosion [in raw Japanese again lol thank god I remember most of the EngDub lines by heart] and DAMN, I finally remembered why I used to hate Kyouya so much [I got over it]
I first Discovered MFB [and thus Beyblade as a whole] way, way back like 11 years ago, when Explosion was still airing in Japan. That was my Introduction To Bey; I came in during the Starbreaker arc. Kyouya was about to pick a fight with Damian in the imminent future. So that was about to be pretty much my Introduction To Kyouya.
And Kyouya has one thing he is really horrible about, and unfortunately that One Thing was about to be my very first impression of him.
Kyouya is an ASSHOLE about, like, mental health issues and any sort of tech dependency. He's Mr. Wildman, It’s A Dog-Eat-Dog World sort of guy. He was pointlessly cruel to Damian for having germaphobia and deliberately threw mud on him. Even Gingka realized that the Bad Shit Currently Happening was not Damian's fault though, "You're actually just a victim in all of this, huh?" etc., so that was just. Uncalled for, man. Disarm Damian Because He Is A Threat But Leave It At That And Don't Actually Be Mean To Him, Please.
And I was like 11 years old, so Little Me didn’t have the words to articulate this, but that gave me the distinct impression that Bastard Lion Man would have been just a wretched asshole to me. The word I was looking for turned out to be “ableist” lol, this guy was being extremely ableist.
Context: I am very sick, and I have been very sick for a very long time. I have a chronic illness, it’s genetic, it’s an immune disorder, and right around age 10-11 was right around the time it first reared its ugly head. I was suddenly extremely sick for no discernible reason, I was in and out of doctors’ offices and the hospital continuously and no one could figure out what was wrong with me, I was terrified and ended up with a fair few “weird” phobias, and I was now housebound. I was stuck inside all day every day, having to take a bunch of medicine or else I’d feel like pure death warmed over, sometimes had to get hooked up to big sciencey medical machines and stuck with needles, and I was debilitatingly afraid of weird things. [And I was also already being pretty viciously shamed by my mother for being so “broken” and “inconvenient” and “dramatic” due to this. Love you too, mom.] So that was the condition I was in when I was watching this.
Kyouya @ Damian: "Oh? Oh, you're a little bitch boy who can't SURVIVE out in the WILD? Can't live out in the savannah with a bunch of apex predators and no civilization or tech? Oh, you have weird phobias because you were raised in this horrible unhealthy unnatural environment? You never go Outside™? Haha lol you would die So Fast in ThE WiLd, eat mud"
Little Me: :( "...Is for me?"
I got secondhand bullied by Kyouya Tategami at age 11 lmfao 😭 I was getting the distinct impression that this guy would tell me I ought to give up and just die in a ditch somewhere because I had an anxiety disorder and also wasn’t able to Go Outside, Get Dirty and Be Super Tough And Always Self-Sufficient. I looked at Mr. Damian Hart [and all of Starbreaker actually] hooked up to Big Sciencey Machines all the time and stuck in a weird sterile Science Building a lot and thought “Oh! That’s a People Like Me!”, and “...This angry green man has incredible contempt for People Like Me” except I didn’t know what the word for “contempt” was at age 11.
Like, I eventually got over it, I definitely don't hate Kyouya anymore, but damn that sure was a Bad First Impression for someone like me. Hurt my little 11-year-old feelings real good.
