every time i think about how much the car-centric US infrastructure fails to actually benefit individual drivers i get a little bit more anti-US
we *have* public transit here, but like. if the commuter rail (already a decent walk, or a short drive but only if i’m going to be back within four hours) isn’t running at the time i’m trying to get somewhere. like. it’s 15 minutes to drive to the nearest T stop and then $9/day for parking, plus fares. otherwise to get into the city proper it’s 30–40 minutes of driving in awful traffic, upwards of $30 to park somewhere, and then if it’s for a specific event another 20–30 minutes just to get out of whatever parking garage i had to park in. and then i still have to drive home.
if i want to, say, go to gillette for an event, even taking the train requires going into the city first. driving directly to the stadium is an option but requires buying a parking pass and sitting in awful traffic and spending an hour getting out of the parking lot, or walking a mile to and from a friend’s house to the stadium (which, to be clear, only works if you know someone who lives nearby).
on a larger scale, if you want to go north-south between two places anywhere that’s west of chicago but east of california-oregon-washington, amtrak can’t really help you. you can fly (usually requires driving to the airport and getting an uber/lyft/taxi at your destination) or drive. I-15, 25, and 35 are basically the only north-south interstate highways in that region.
let’s say we’re traveling from helena, MT to albuquerque, NM. (two major cities i picked at random.) google maps doesn’t even offer any train routes. you can take I-15 for 8 hours down to northern utah and then drive 2 hours to I-70, head southeast for six and a half hours until you get to I-25 north of albuquerque, then continue south for 15 more minutes. in total, almost 17 hours of driving. just over 1000 miles, which is over 1600 km.
what if you’re in page, AZ (just south of the utah border) going to aberdeen, SD (about 34 miles / 55 km south of the north dakota border). the fastest route by car is over 20 hours, and requires you to make a big winding circle that takes over 3 hours and almost 150 miles / 240 km to even reach utah, and almost 3 hours more to reach I-70; in total 315 miles / 507 km. (from page AZ to I-70 in crescent junction UT is about 170 miles / 270 km as the crow flies.) and you’ve still got about 15 hours more driving to look forward to! you have to drive almost 5 hours on I-70 to denver, CO (yay, driving through a major city!!) and then 3 and a half hours on I-80 to reach the nebraska border, and 6 more hours after that using mostly state routes to reach aberdeen. total distance as the crow flies: 895 miles / 1440 km. total distance as the car travels: 1286 miles / 2070 km, over 1.4 times as far. and no, you can’t just take the train. and aberdeen is 75 miles from the nearest airport with any flights, and it’ll run you almost $700 per ticket in addition to any cars you have to rent or ride share app fees.
for an EU comparison: from guadalajara, spain (near madrid) to augsburg, germany (near munich) is around 17 hours by transit, or over 18 hours by car. and even that 18+ hours by car is significantly closer to a straight line. (going directly from madrid to munich is even more of a difference: 16 hours by transit, over 19 hours driving. or you can of course take a flight, which will take ~2.5 hours and cost a third as much per ticket as the US example.)
the reason this works is because europe has far less space. the cities are denser, so the infrastructure is denser, too. trains are great at dealing with lower density areas, so why doesn’t the US use them?

Mark's Transformative Journey: Shedding 40 Pounds in Two Years
Tumblr media
 Introduction: A Weighted Struggle
Mark, a regular 35-year-old juggling the demands of family and a full-time job, had felt the frustrations and challenges of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. But within life's chaos, he discovered his passion for helping others find a healthier version of themselves. This is the story of Mark's transformative journey.
A Solid Foundation
Setting Realistic Goals Mark understood the significance of setting achievable and sustainable goals for his weight loss journey: - To lose weight safely and effectively, he aimed to lose 1-2 pounds per week, which aligned with expert recommendations. - Mark knew that a calorie deficit was crucial, but he avoided extreme restrictions that might lead to nutrient deficiencies or other health issues. - His approach was rooted in patience, consistency, and adaptability, focusing on long-term, sustainable changes.
The Science Behind Weight Loss
Calorie Intake and Burn Mark embraced the science of weight loss: - He recognized that an average adult needs about 2,000 calories per day to maintain their weight. - To create a calorie deficit, he decided to consume fewer calories than he burned, taking into account his age, sex, weight, and activity level.
Beyond Calories: The Bigger Picture
Other Factors Related to Weight Loss Mark didn't stop at calorie management; he considered the broader context: - Understanding the role of sleep was crucial. Mark knew that sufficient sleep was essential for weight loss, as it helped regulate the stress hormone cortisol. - Managing stress was another vital component. Stress could trigger weight gain, so he sought healthy outlets like exercise and relaxation techniques. - Mark was aware of potential medical conditions and medications that could hinder weight loss, emphasizing the importance of consulting with healthcare professionals.
Glimpse into the Future
Predictions for the Future of Weight Loss Mark was optimistic about the evolving landscape of weight loss research. - Researchers were developing innovative approaches to aid weight loss, from drugs targeting specific pathways to advanced surgical procedures. - Technology was playing a pivotal role. New tools were emerging to help individuals monitor their calorie intake, exercise, and stay motivated on their weight loss journey.  A Realistic Perfect Story Embracing these insights, Mark implemented a well-structured exercise routine, a balanced diet, and other healthy habits. The Journey Begins Warm-up - Mark's exercise sessions always started with a 5-10 minute warm-up of light cardio, such as brisk walking or jogging. - Dynamic stretches, like arm circles and leg swings, followed to prepare his muscles for more intense activity. Workout - The core of Mark's exercise regimen consisted of 20-30 minutes of cardio, which might include running, cycling, or swimming. He adapted the intensity and type of cardio to his fitness level. - Following the cardio session, Mark dedicated 20-30 minutes to strength training. He used weights and resistance bands, incorporating a variety of exercises, including squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, rows, overhead presses, bicep curls, and tricep extensions. - Resistance bands added variety and challenge to his strength training routine. Cool-down - Post-workout, Mark allowed his body to cool down gradually, beginning with another 5-10 minutes of light cardio. - Static stretches, such as holding hamstring and calf stretches, were essential to reduce the risk of injury and enhance flexibility.
The Dietary Transformation
Mark's diet underwent a comprehensive transformation, emphasizing balanced nutrition. A Healthy Diet for Weight Loss Mark's diet plan included: Breakfast - A hearty and nutritious breakfast was essential, often comprising a bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh berries, accompanied by Greek yogurt and a small serving of nuts. Lunch - Lunch focused on lean protein and vegetables. Grilled chicken or tofu paired with a colorful salad drizzled with olive oil and vinegar was his go-to choice. Snacks Mark made smart snack choices, opting for options like carrot sticks with hummus, a piece of fruit, or a handful of mixed nuts. Dinner Dinner was a balanced culmination of the day, featuring salmon or another lean protein source, complemented by generous servings of steamed broccoli or roasted sweet potatoes. Hydration Mark prioritized staying well-hydrated, with water being his primary choice. Occasional herbal teas and sparkling water added variety.
A Journey of 40 Pounds
Two years passed, and the results were undeniable. Mark had lost a remarkable 40 pounds. But this journey was not just about numbers; it was about newfound vitality, renewed confidence, and a commitment to a healthier lifestyle.
 A Realistic, Perfect Ending
Mark's story was a testament to the power of knowledge, determination, and unwavering patience. It was not about unattainable ideals but about the journey to a healthier, happier life. Whether you're just starting or facing challenges, remember, you're never alone in your journey. There's a wealth of information and support available to help you find your own path to a healthier you. Read the full article

junior RD 🇨🇦 Nats -
the top 2 teams were stronger than the rest of the field by a good margin. Layla and Alex did really well - this RD incorporates the strength of their skating and their flow more organically than their Run-DMC one did. in 2nd ahead of 3rd by almost 6 points. they got level 4 in the 1st part of the pattern and got 2 key points in the reversed part of the pattern that's been a challenge all season. they skate so well together - that's one thing they have over the 1st place team, who are new to each other
but they are strong- Nguyen/Giang got level 4 in both parts of the pattern. it still drives me crazy about their coaching team how much and how often they manipulate the tempos of the music they use - i immediately go ugh when they start their program because they've slowed Dancing in the Street to about 105 beats per minute when the original is more like 128-132. that's not the same song when you change it that much. and don't get me started about the subject of their FD music. the packaging tends to be clunky, and their program choices 👎 but that's not on the team, who did very well
watching the junior field overall, you see skaters with good basic skating skills - Canada has strong coaching across a good number of schools - but as a whole, anyone with obvious dance training, with extension, flexibility and carriage would stand out. i know some of that is time and developing the strength, skating and partnering skills to have the freedom to show that on the ice
tickets were $35 for junior short/rhythm dance day and the crowd was tiny - it's a big arena, but still, it's a shame that they performed for so few people. tickets are $40 to see them today-- i know it's mid-week, but i wonder if making tickets less or free and doing outreach would bring in more people, or if that's hard with junior events
kirsten moore-towers and kaitlyn weaver have about the right tone as a broadcast pair for juniors - kirsten's chirpy and positive and feeding kaitlyn good questions. i'd take her over ted any day
and mitch islam with his team - maybe the first event we've seen him ❤️ the way the skating community rallied for him and his baby in the fall, i imagine and hope he's surrounded by friends

Cool-Down
Parallel Bar Dips: 5 X 5
Notes:
As I guiltily snuck back to the house 1 hour after the WOD completion, Timmy and Smoothie were still hard at work re-wiring the music system.
Those present today got introduced to our new gym dog. Not a mean bone in her 5 month old body, she jumped on and licked nearly everyone here. She enjoyed taking turns running along with everyone on their 200m runs. Her name is GINGER because she is a red dog, but she doesn't know her name yet.
Nearly everyone who matters is out of town for a couple of weeks. Kayla/Alicia/The Schwartz's and probably some others are not going to be here Thursday and beyond. Obviously that impacts our happiness at the Thursday wine tasting since all these people are our major snack providers. Miss Linda has already agreed to order pizza and it can be sausage/pepperoni/and extra cheese without endangering anyone's future in heaven (except Dana). Someone needs to order Chic Fil A for Dana.
Herb swears that SCHWARTZ is the longest single syllable last name in the Western World. He said that while making fun of people with 4 letter last names. Like BUCK.
Apropos of nothing in particular, the Maui fire has claimed over 100 deaths. That's terrible. For comparison, the Coconut Grove Fire in Boston (1942) killed almost 500. Worse, the Iroquois Theater fire in Chicago (1903) killed over 600, many of them children. The Great Chicago fire of 1871 killed about 300. Sometime around the picnic table, ask me about the hazards of doors that only open inwards, and those fun and innocent looking revolving doors, like at Bone Fish Grill.
TUMBLR is still mis-behaving. Notice that the resulting names are jammed together, which is not how I blogged it. I wish I could share with you the pictures of the buxomy Brentwood ladies who demand my attention by posting invitations along-side my blogs. I only look at them in hopes of seeing a reputable housewife and church-lady known to me via LHCF.
Thursday at 4 PM. The weather is supposed to be great because man-kind has advanced to the point that we can control it.

#NowPop40
Over on my mastodon feed, there’s a daily pop music challenge.
This month is #Popiversary2, for which I’m posting chilled-out songs for a hot summer. (check weather) Never mind.
Last month was #NowPop40, forty songs taken from the .gb Now! That’s What I Call Music series - from 1983 to the present day.
The whole thing is organised by Arron, a lovely chap; for historic reasons, it’s still done through far-right blitheration Twitter.
And because their siteowner Elon Muskrat is a cis pervert who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing, the #NowPop40 winning thread is hidden behind a login wall so that nobody can see it.
... except it's not, because someone's slapped it up on my Tumblr.
#NOWPOP40
Hello, and thanks to all 32 of you who posted tracks every day.
1,523 picks altogether, with the median finishing on NOW 47 (2000 Q4).
And these are THE RESULTS.
Ties were settled by avoiding repeat artists and giving credit to artists with other tracks that were chosen but didn't win.
Also, by length, as I wanted to make each volume no longer than 4min per track average.
My casting vote was a last resort. So here goes...
Winners (x = votes by winning song, C = Clear, T - Tied, * = I picked it, y = votes by comp )
NOW 1: The Safety Dance 3C/17 NOW 2: Modern Love 2T/14 (shortest tied track) NOW 3: Time After Time 3C/19 NOW 4: Together In Electric Dreams 3C/11 NOW 5: Walking On Sunshine 3T/23 (shortest, and neat segue into...) NOW 6: Running Up That Hill 5C/19 NOW 7: I Can't Wait 3C/24 (highest-voted comp; shortest tied track) NOW 8: Breakout 3T/18 (shortest, avoided repeating Kate Bush) NOW 9: Land of Confusion 3C/16 NOW 10: Alone 2T/15 (replaced M/A/R/R/S to come in at 160 minutes) NOW 11: Mandinka 3T/18 NOW 12: Push It 3C/16 NOW 13: A Little Respect 4C/15 NOW 14: Buffalo Stance 6C/17 NOW 15: Back To Life 3C/16 NOW 16 (as you know): SOWING THE SEEDS OF LOVE 8C/18 (top voted track) NOW 17: Enjoy The Silence 4T/20 (tied with Loaded, I didn't give Loaded the casting vote as I have a lot of winning picks on Vol 2 and I much prefer the 7-min version) NOW 18: There She Goes 4C/19 NOW 19: 3AM Eternal 4C/16 NOW 20: Set Adrift On Memory Bliss 5C/18 21 Weather With You 3C/14 22 Something Good 3T/19 (shorter) 23 Sleeping Satellite 4C/15 24 Constant Craving 3T/17 (preferred to a cover) 25 Sunflower 5C/16 26 Laid 2T/20 - A 7-WAY TIE on 2 here, I replaced Play Dead with this to come in at 160 minutes. 27 Disarm 3T/17 28 Girls And Boys 4C/13 29 Stay (I Missed You) 2T/16 (tied artists have other winning songs) 30 Glory Box 4C/17 31 Common People 6C/14 (not edited, I have my limits😁) 32 Missing - Todd Terry remix 4C/18 33 He's On The Phone 3C/13 34 Born Slippy 3C/16 35 Pearl's Girl was 3C/14 winner but is too long and didn't want consecutive tracks by same artist so it went to runner-up The Riverboat Song. 36 Virtual Insanity 3T/19 (tied artists have winners on Vol 2) 37 Bitter Sweet Symphony 3C/16 38 Karma Police 3C/14 39 Torn 5C/16 40 Teardrop 5C/15 - the absence of an edit is what forced me to make the two changes on NOWs 10 & 26
And here is #NOWPOP40 VOLUME 1! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/68FKsOVUNfmMNlXsHevldz

I gave it to Elton :) 111 House On Fire 2T/9 (shorter, flowed better) It's (112) About Damn Time (5C*/10)
this (113) Unholy (2C/10...ah, there was another '2C')
challenge was (114) Over (3C/12)

The Westman Islands in Iceland - All Tips & Highlights
As if our Iceland tour wasn't great enough, we also took a trip to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar). Up to this point we had already explored the north of Iceland, the south, the south-east, the Vatnsnes peninsula and the east. So the next adventure awaited us.
This archipelago is located 10 to 30 kilometers off the Icelandic coast in the south of the country. Only one of the 14 islands is inhabited, namely Heimaey. And that's the island we went to. Some make a day trip to the island (morning there, back evening). We have stayed on the island and would recommend it to anyone. In the following post you will learn everything about the island, activities, tours, accommodation and transfer.
Getting to Vestmannaeyjar
From Landeyjahöfn in the south of Iceland you can easily take the ferry to Heimaey. The journey only takes around 30 to 35 minutes. You can also take your camper or rental car with you. Of course you can also go to the island without your wheels.
We parked our car in front of the ferry terminal and didn't take it with us. The ferry runs at least 4 times a day. Times vary by month. In the high season the ferry also runs more frequently. You only pay 1380 ISK (10.80€) per trip. With a small car you would pay a total of 40€ for a round trip. cheap right?
OVER WITH THE FERRY
Of course, the ferry cannot start if the weather is too bad. So it can happen that you are already on the island and do not come back to Landeyjahöfn as planned. Then you have to book accommodation on site and are forced to spend the night there. You should be at the ferry 30 minutes before departure. As a rule, only the driver is allowed to remain in the car during the crossing.
All other passengers have to go on the ferry. There you can sit comfortably and sip a coffee. You should book your tickets in advance, either online or you can drive to the ferry terminal in Landeyjahöfn. From time to time the tickets are fully booked online. In this case you should call them, tickets are usually still available on the phone.
Don't fancy the ferry? You can also fly to the island from Reykjavik with Eagle Air. The flight takes almost half an hour. You have to reckon with at least 120€ per route. Of course you will have a great view of Iceland and the sea in good weather. For that reason alone, a flight to the island is certainly pretty cool. However, it is cheaper to take the ferry. You can book your ferry tickets here.
CLIMATE AND WEATHER ON THE ISLAND
The climate on the islands is moderately warm. It never gets really icy, but never really warm either. In summer the thermometer rises to up to 12 degrees Celsius. In winter, however, the temperatures usually never drop below 0 degrees Celsius. This is also typical for Iceland. Due to the Gulf Stream, the island never gets freezing cold like in other parts of the north. This makes it quite bearable all year round.
However, it rains a lot and often, even on the Westman Islands. We were lucky. During our trip the sun was shining and it was only partly cloudy. Hiking in the mountains can get very cold and windy. You should therefore have appropriate clothing with you. According to the climate diagram, the best months are from June to September. But as you know, the weather in Iceland is unpredictable and extremely changeable.
BOOK ACCOMMODATION
After almost two weeks in the tent, we really wanted a bed. Without further ado, we booked a cool hut on the campsite via Booking.com. In that sense, we did " glamping ", a somewhat more comfortable variant of camping. The little wooden huts are really charming. There are two beds in it, two chairs, a table, heaters, a mirror, a fridge and storage space.
The toilets, kitchen and showers are in the main house. We paid €79 per night. It was worth it to us, we slept like logs! However, the price did not include blankets, pillows and bed linen (€16 more per person). We slept in our sleeping bags, which was really enough.
From the harbor it is a 15 minute walk to the campsite where the cabins are located. You reserve your hut in advance on Booking.com, but then only pay on site. An impressive small mountain range rises in the background of the course. The island's local mountain with the highest elevation of 283 meters has a lot to offer.
Here you can take a great hike, but more on that later. A golf course is also located directly in front of the complex. It is only a 10-minute walk to the local outdoor pool. You generally do not need a car on the island, but you can take it with you. Otherwise, hitchhiking on the island also works wonderfully, as the Icelanders are just super helpful and friendly.
HIKING ON VESTMANNAEYJAR
On the island you can go on relaxed and challenging hikes. We hiked once to the southern tip of Stórhöfði (4.5 km). A beautiful peninsula with a puffin look awaits you here. You can also look forward to a small black beach and great views of the sea. It took us about 1.5 hours to get to the peninsula. Then it was back by hitchhiking. You can also drive your car to the peninsula and park there. On the peninsula you will find small hiking trails that you can walk along.
How about a hike up Eldfell Volcano ? It is best to start from the harbor to the hiking trail on the Eldfell. From the top you have a great view of the entire island. If the weather is good, you can see the mainland yourself. You should plan about 1.5 to 2 hours for the hike. By the way: This volcanic cone appeared out of nowhere on January 23, 1973.
The volcanic ash and lava destroyed many houses on the island. All people had to be evacuated and could only return to the island almost 5 months later. Even today it is so warm in some places that you can bake bread there. Next door is the Helgafell volcano. You can also climb this.
HIKE TO THE LOCAL MOUNTAIN HEIMAKLETTUR
A very beautiful and challenging hike awaits you directly behind the campsite. From there the hike to the 283 meter high local mountain Heimaklettur starts. It's only 20 minutes to the top, but the climb is steep. Once at the top, you can turn left and walk along the ridge. The views are spectacular.
Then it always goes right along towards the port. Some of the paths are a bit shaky, not secured and slippery. This hike is not recommended with small children and generally only if you are a little fit. The path ends down in town near the port. We brought about 1.5 to 2 hours in total.
If you have more time, you can also explore the entire island. The hiking trail leads from Herjólfsdalur along the coastal road to the southern tip of Stórhöfði. On the way back it goes back on the east side to the Eldfell just described. You should plan 2.5 to 3 hours for this route. It is best to ask your accommodation for a map, there you will find all the routes.
PUFFINS
Not only nature is a real eye-catcher on this island. Another reason to visit Heimaey is certainly the fact that it is home to the largest puffin colony in the country during the season. There are some good spots to spot the cute birds. Unfortunately we were a few weeks late and couldn't spot any of the puffins in the wild. You can see them in the very south on the peninsula or at the top of Heimaklettur. But actually you often find them on cliffs by the sea. That's where they feel most comfortable.
Every year between May and August
Every year these little birds migrate many thousands of kilometers. In winter they live on the open sea to find food. You can even find them in Newfoundland. Crazy, right? So you can't mock puffins all year round. You have the best chances between May and August. Then they come to breed on the cliffs of Iceland. Sometimes you see them as early as April or even in September. We ran out of luck in early September. To protect the birds, breeding areas are also closed between May and June.
If you want to learn more about these amazing birds, take a trip to the city's aquarium. Here you can also find out everything about the underwater world and the inhabitants of the island. And of course a large part of the exhibition is also dedicated to the puffins. Here they also take care of injured puffins or the young animals, which are attracted by the city lights from June to September.
During this time you will always see locals walking the streets with flashlights and boxes. In the city it is far too dangerous for the little ones, which is why they are then taken back to the sea. It's almost like a national sport on this island. Just awesome. We could even see a real puffin in the aquarium, which lives here in the rescue center. The little one's sebum glands didn't work right from the start, which is why the fur isn't watertight/waterproof. Outside, the bird would not survive.
TOURS AND WHALE WATCHING
The island is not only famous for its puffin colony but also for whale watching. And we're not just talking about humpback whales, we're talking about orcas. They cavort off the coast of the island, especially in July. You can spot other whales around the island almost all year round. Boat tours are offered by a few different providers. On the Guide to Iceland* website you get the following tour: 1 hour by boat including caving, whale watching, bird watching and sightseeing.
More highlights on Heimaey
The island has quite an interesting history. If you want to learn more about the 1973 volcanic eruption then you should make a detour to the Eldheimar Museum. At the exhibition, you will learn how 5,000 residents escaped the volcano's lava flow at the last minute on 01/23/2973. You will see what has become of a burnt down city covered in ashes. The unpredictable forces of nature are presented here in an interesting and moving way. Admission is 2,300 ISK for adults. The museum is open every day between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
And can you imagine that every year there is a huge festival on the island? The National Festival takes place every year on the weekend before the first Monday in August. Then more than 17,000 people flock to the small island. With music, dancing, drinks and a good mood, the celebrations here are really extensive.
What we can absolutely recommend is a detour to the local swimming pool. Here you can end the evening in super warm temperatures in the outdoor pool. Pools like this are meeting places for young and old in Iceland anyway. Outside there are 3 hot tubs (up to 42 degrees Celsius), water slides and much more. You can also take a shower there in peace. Entry costs 900 ISK per person (about 7€).
Eat and drink
On the island you will find a Bónus supermarket as well as a Krónan supermarket. We shopped at Bonus most of the time because the prices there are unbelievably cheap (by Icelandic standards). You will also find some restaurants and cafes. The God and the Tanginn are very popular. There is also the Pizza 67, the 900 Grillhus, the Slippurinn, the Fiskibarinn and the Einsi Kaldi Restaurant. And you can also find cafes on the island. Highly recommended is Stofans Bakhus. We paid around €14 for 2 cappuccinos and cake. In Heimaey you will also find the Café Varmó.
Conclusion of the Vestmannaeyjar
We made this trip very spontaneously during our tour of Iceland. In the end we can say that this detour is really worth it. Since we still had a lot of time, we could afford this excursion in time. However, if you are only on the island for 7 or 10 days, we would advise against it. There is certainly enough to see on the “main island” Iceland. We particularly liked the accommodation and the various hikes.
There was very little going on and so we didn't have to share any of the spots with other holidaymakers. The evening at the pool was also very cool, as was the trip to the Puffin Rescue Center. And during puffin season, a trip is even more worthwhile. Then you have the opportunity to see thousands of puffins here. Insanity! In the end we spent around 150€ for these 2 days. After almost two weeks in the tent, that was a very welcome change. You can read our complete editions of the round trip here: Iceland round trip costs.

This is one hell of a warty pickle.
I’m running a load from Rewind back to Clockwise. If not for those babes caterwauling below deck, I’d be hard-pressed remembering if I’m coming or going. Make enough trips and it’s tough to keep track.
I know you’ve heard of the Isle of Rewind, but don’t believe it exists due to some tropospheric trickery that keeps it off the maps. Something like that. Anyway, how the hell would I know? I’m just the guy who runs the ferry.
It was once the purported lair of a mad doctor’s experiments. Crossbreeding fauna, farming Brobdingnagian vegetables. Six-legged turkeys, upright alligators. Radishes the size of pumpkins, pumpkins the size of woodsheds.
According to legend he started playing with time travel, then disappeared, leaving a four-mile strip of freakazoid jungle that inexplicably reverses age.
Again, don’t ask me. I’m no scientist. I run a boat. Two round trips a week. Thanks to the time trick, I’ve been 35 and 38 years of age for the last 40 years, a boyish-faced sunburnt salt with age-inappropriate wisdom in his eyes, and a penchant for cobwebbed references and turns of phrase.
That’s the deal: a ticket to Rewind when your joints start to ache, then automatic return to Clockwise when you start to crawl again. Most people enjoy two or three lifetimes and then let nature take its usual course. Life is a gift, but enough is enough.
My passengers are all natives. Fortunate enough to live multiple lifetimes, enlightened beyond their years, with the unique opportunity to parent their parents, and be raised by their children. Don’t meditate on it too long. It’ll hang you up. Anyway, to my thinking, they are the world’s last great hope.
The age reversal timeline is approximately a year per day. A couple days after arrival they’re dropping their canes. A week later they’re setting up badminton nets.
The typical return trip is a babysitter’s nightmare, but I’d take it in a blink compared to now. The aforementioned pickle.
My engine has seized up and I’ve tried everything—dead in the water for two days. What started out as a berth full of toddlers is now a maternity ward. A literal boatload of infants in want of a teat, getting younger and more red-faced by the minute. If I don’t get away from Rewind, they’ll be embryos by morning. By lunch, a hammock of dried spermatozoa. Not-so-able semen.
Right now I’m weaving a harness out of seagrass. This is where it gets funny. I’m going to try to rope a Carpet Eel.
Aptly named since they’re roughly the thickness of a rolled-up carpet that would get you from the curb to the Taj Mahal doorbell, they are among the island’s nastiest experiments.
I fashioned a large hoop for the harness with an old canopy frame—a gargantuan makeshift butterfly net (inspired by a Lunar Moth I spied one night devouring a pony in the surf). This I dropped off the starboard bow.
With bulging mandible and hodgepodge of glinting oral cutlery, odds are good that Carpet Eels are carnivorous. I marinated some hacked up salt pork in squid ink and dangled it in front of the net with a telescopic gaff hook, a grotesque carrot on a stick.
Lowering this bait, I recited the old fisherman’s prayer my grandfather used to whisper into his can of worms. “Hello Jonah, how you been? C’mon big fish, let’s do it again.”
Within seconds the Eel struck, slamming into the tight harness, ferocious jaws gaping at the dangling pig parts, its carbuncled, rubbery spine roiling like Neptune’s kite tail, filling the air with rotten algae stench. The rope tethering the harness to the bow cleat pulled taut with an audible Thwang!
Ever hear of a Nantucket sleigh ride? It’s a phrase from before whales went extinct. Little boat with six oarsman and a harpooner at the bow. When the whale breaches, the harpooner lets fly, burying the barb in its blubber. The whale takes off and you with it. Hang on tight, fellas.
Only this time it’s a runaway serpent spraying foam, undulating like a barnacle-crusted gangrened bellydancer backstroking in a tsunami. Webbed fins the size of giant palm fronds breaking the surface with each roll, flitting like dragon wings.
And then the salt pork snapped its line and sunk. The Eel plunged, giving chase. The ferry heaved. Compared to the screaming joints of old wood and rusted metal, the chorus of wailing babies was the most soothing sound on the boat.
The bow dipped, a monster wave splashing the deck. This beast could take us all down—cradles and all. I reached for my knife in case I had to cut. The same knife I left in the galley when hacking pork.
Shite.
I ran for it, white water sloshing over the rails, whooshing me down the companionway. I grabbed the knife, fought the deluge back to the bow, and whacked the rope until it tore free. The boat bobbed, leveling itself.
I scrambled to check the kids, rejoicing at the cacophony of them shrieking their heads off, dangling in their little lace-up hammocks, two feet over the flooded hold. And then the bilge pump kicked in.
We drifted for a day and a half. I netted some minnows, boiled them into milky broth, and improvised a nipple from the pinkie of a rubber glove. The kiddies spit up most of it, but I managed to squirt enough down their throats to keep them alive.
Finally, I spotted land. Waterfalls. Brown-sugar beaches. Orange coconuts. A wafting scent of creamsicle. Topless woman beckoned. A herd of miniature goats prodded along by a smiling longhaired man.
As I brought each child to shore, wading through gentle waves, I could see they were growing hair. Wherever we were, it was in the right direction.

Heathrow airport Airport Hotel Guideline For The Amusement Traveller
Heathrow Airport Birmingham will be the busiest worldwide airport on the planet. About 35% of its individuals are transit passengers, i. e. individuals that are just using London to make connections. Just 1 reason why you can find nearly 40 airport hotels at Heathrow airport serving the localized demand for overnight stopovers. For a lot of of these kinds of hotels the n entrepreneur with an expense account is their very own bread and butter. This article looks for to deal with the leisure traveller, providing the guide to getting value for cash locating a mattress at Heathrow. We will start off simply by dividing the resorts into three classes. There are typically the large 4 and even 5 star sequence hotels like Hilton, Radisson and Sheraton aimed at typically the businessmen, typically charging $US200 during the week, half that will at weekends. Then there are the two and 3 celebrity hotels, again generally chains, like Ease and comfort Inn, Ibis and even Premier Travel Resort, aimed at typically the leisure traveller and the businessmen on a budget. These will typically charge only over $US100 in the week, about $US75 at weekends. Lastly, there are typically the small independent local hotels, mostly family members owned who offer cheap 'bed plus breakfast' style bedrooms. These have typically the cheapest accommodation. Space rates can be good value, especially from weekends when the particular businessmen are aside and everyone deep discounts to fill beds. Nevertheless , beware, exactly what the hotel won't get in room rates they'll attempt to get out involving you consist of ways. There are zero hotels in the particular central passenger region where Terminals 1, 2 and several are situated, though generally there is a lodge linked to Terminal 4 on typically the south side involving the airport - the expensive Hilton Hotel, not intended for most leisure holidaymakers. This means a tour bus transfer, and contrary to most international international airports there are zero complimentary hotel transfer buses. The airport terminal authority provides 'Hoppa Buses', mid-size buses that run every 10-20 minutes about fixed routes to Heathrow Hotels. At 3 GBP for every person per quest, thats an extra $US20 for a partners staying at some sort of Heathrow Hotel. The majority of hotels will cost anything from $US10-$US30 for breakfast, and at most hotels there is not viable competition outside of the front door. Meal is similarly costly and entertainment is largely restricted to an expensive bar. Therefore , tips for the leisure traveller trying to economise. 호빠 Look for a lodge around the Bath Highway, this can be a northern edge road of Heathrow airport Airport and the main hotel remove. Public buses operate more frequently compared to the Hoppa Buses along the Bath Road in to Heathrow Terminals, and they are free. (The service fees from the Hoppa Buses are component used to subsidise the free local buses). The Bath Path may be the only place where you can escape your current hotel. There is a pub offering meals, 2 Burger king, a bowling alley, a small store and an German Restaurant that may provide breakfasts, snacks and meals upon the Bath Street. There are in addition 24 hour public buses running to be able to local towns Kingston and Hounslow for entertainment. Taking the above together, the particular benchmark for that leisure traveller will be the Ibis and Premier Vacation Inn hotels. Typically the other local alternative is to think about local Bed and Breakfast hotels. These types of tend not to provide the airport transfer most are on the periphery of the airport on a bus or underground route. Their room rates usually are similar to the budget hotels but this includes a hearty breakfast time and the transfer remains to be cheaper as compared to the Hoppa Bus. One other alternative is to neglect Heathrow altogether plus overnight in Core London. The Heathrow airport Express takes simply 15 minutes in order to London's Paddington Place and there is lots of affordable accommodation around typically the station. You'll undoubtedly have an even more entertaining evening in London than at a great airport hotel, plus at the same total price.

Things from Anne with an e that I feel like writing down
Season 2 Episode 3: The True Seeing Is Within
1. I haven’t done one of these is so long
2. The opening will always be so good I hardly ever skip it unless I’m binging the show
3. Anne’s handwriting
4. Sometimes when Anne stares at things in shock and they get really close to her face she looks like a frog in a cute way
5. Consistent close ups on her mouth as she talks
6. Tripping Nate’s trap without even realizing what’s going on
7. “Not an adventure, per say-“
8. Anne promising to be calm and then running out the door yelling
9. Matthew and Marilla making decisions on the farm together
10. Aunt Josephine forcing the Barrys to bring Anne
11. I always thought the borders took the gun as they were fleeing the house but they actually stole it far in advance woah
12. I actually feel really bad for Dunlop. Nate is just a bad person, Jonesy genuinely likes the town and the cuthberts despite lying to them and wants to stay where he feels at home
13. You can’t hide anything from Marilla apparently
14. Clever cover up from Nate as to why he was in Anne’s room
15. I hate Nate but boy he’s a good actor and manipulator
16. Minnie May shoving her face against the window
17. Anne nearly out-logicing Mr Barry about the finances of gold
18. “Mr Barry doesn’t usually discuss our finances. Today’s your lucky day Anne.”
19. Minnie May is a terrible little child I love her
20. Poor poor Jerry
21. Jerry’s family is catholic
22. Back when people hated the French not as a joke
23. Despite being terrified of these men, Jerry never once gives in to them. He removes himself from the situation as swiftly as possible but never once lets them get their way
24. Jerry and Anne just go up in the barn and cry why is the barn a popular crying spot
25. Jerry still has guilt for losing that money even months later, blaming himself for the cuthberts financial hardship even though they probably would’ve needed borders regardless
26. “You didn’t do anything wrong, my son.”
27. I always find it really interesting seeing the progression from Marilla refusing to even talk to Jerry to him being part of the family, another child of theirs even though he also has his own family
28. Marilla and Matthew can communicate so much through so little spoken words
29. Aunt Josephine!!!!! And her definitely gay butler
30. “It’s a letter sir. The one we’ve just discussed. At length. Moments ago.”
31. The girls spelling so Minnie May can’t understand them
32. The watch and brooch together in the pawn shop window
33. “Something that doesn’t bore me to tears! This velvet has absolutely no drape.” Me in the fabric store too tbh
34. “This feels like a cat! Meow!”
35. When Mrs Barry is upset with her husband she just starts redecorating???
36. Malcolm Frost is quite the interesting side character. He’s only there for a brief few minutes in one episode of one season, but you get a sense of his entire story in that short time without them really having to explain all of it to you. He also gives Anne a half filled journal, something that will no doubt influence her in her ventures. He’s one of those people that will always be significant in her life despite barely doing anything
37. The girls have been told so many lies that they’ve gaslighted themselves into believing it
38. 1 ton of gold reaps 40 cents. 2000 pounds accumulated from small traces in the soil is only enough to buy 2 dozen eggs despite the digging cost being several hundred DOLLARS
39. “But we don’t buy our eggs, we have chickens.” A 40 cent turnover for hundreds of dollars in digging is already a terrible deal but this line shows just how truly useless it would be to a farming town
40. Anne finally putting the pieces together
41. “Who have you been listening to recently. Everyone around here? Or that person in here. Hmm?” “I’m a child, Mr. Frost.” “Poppycock. Children are pure instinct. You should’ve trusted yourself.”
42. “Take notes as you explore your life.”
43. Anne is so bewilderingly strange that she manages to make even the most cynical of people feel a little better about the world
44. Minnie May and the officer saying bye to each other feels like improve it’s so natural and funny
45. “Public house” aka pub aka bar
46. Elizabeth Barry threatens their friendship part 354656465
47. The way they have dried herbs hanging upside down in sprigs instead of stored in bottles is pretty interesting
48. Mr Dunlop making a pie for Anne, genuinely excited for her to come back
49. The way the audio feels underwater when Anne is in a panicked daze, her own heartbeat louder than those around her
50. Anne being concerning quiet, tipping them off that she knows
51. The pie falling, any ‘friendship’ with the borders destroyed
52. “I believe you Anne.” More development from episode 1 where Marilla assumed every word out of her mouth was a lie
53. The grifters escaping in broad daylight, yet Matthew and Jerry are so busy working they don’t even notice
54. Matthew letting Jerry go home to his family early
55. Jerry’s little smile when he finds out the borders are leaving
56. Anne snd Marilla can’t even communicate properly, but getting up when tied like that requires the two people to really work together and they’re still able to get up and outside
57. Using the farm bell to get Matthew’s attention
58. Matthew checking for the gun and Marilla’s first thought being Anne’s safety when it’s discovered stolen
59. Jerry accidentally crossing paths with them again, finally realizing who they are
60. Jerry standing up to fight them again. He doesn’t win this time either, but he did charge at Nate head on this time and he also stalled their progress in escaping, leading to the capture of Mr Dunlop. He didn’t win, but he did stand up for himself and that’s what character development is all about
61. “I never liked you.”
62. Dunlop demanding all the money or threatening to shoot Nate, all on the grounds of him turning the cuthberts against him. Despite being a liar, he’s still terribly lonely and wanted a place to call home making him a very sympathetic villain
63. Anne’s apron getting discarded in the woods like it’s trash
64. “They liked me. Everyone, they liked me!”
65. “There is no me and you! Am taking the money, and I’m gonna buy a house with land somewhere beautiful!”
66. “At least this time I tried to stop them.” “You’re a good lad Jerry, well done.”
67. William realizing just how much trouble he’s put his family in by not listening to those around him
68. Matthew taking Jerry home
69. Packing up all the things Nate left behind
70. Anne genuinely telling Jerry what he did was brave and hugging him, and then walking away stiffly as if she didn’t just do that. She bullies him a lot but when we he’s in actual danger she does really care, and considering they had the gun, they could’ve done a lot worse to Jerry than knock him out
71. Despite being bitter about Nate, she’s still going to learn from both his book and this experience and
72. “All we can do is our best Marilla. Regardless of what we know or don’t know. I believe there’s always a bit of good in every situation, even a bad one. I think it builds character!”
73. Gilbert getting the letter about the gold AFTER this whole fiasco I’d painful irony

It was undeniable that winter was on its way. The weekend brought predictions for temps in the lower 40’s and, even in the warmth of the apartment, you felt perpetually chilled.
Kate had messaged you late on Friday asking if you wanted to get coffee Saturday morning, and you had excitedly agreed to meet her at the local cafe called The Daily Grind (which, admittedly, you chose because of the cute name).
She had seen you bundled up like a burrito in two sweatshirts and a long-sleeved tee underneath and laughed, but you explained to her how you had never really been in temps this cold before.
Your fingers were wrapped as tight as they could go around your mocha as you watched her sip her black coffee, her maroon-painted lips leaving a mark on the white mug.
“When we’re done here, would you want to go with me to a thrift store? My mom sent some money for me to buy warmer clothes when she saw the weather for this area,” you said with an excited tone. “She’s afraid I’m going to get pneumonia.”
She hummed in an interested tone. “That sounds like fun. Which one do you wanna check out first?”
“You’ve been around here longer, so I’ll let you pick.”
“The one on Maple is the one where all the rich sorority girls go, so I bet you’d find some good stuff there,” she informed, tapping her nails against the ceramic.
You beamed a smile, relishing in the sunny feeling that only spending time with other girls gave you. “You wanna drive or me?”

“Do you think if I buy a pair of jeans a size too big I could get away with wearing leggings under them?” you asked, flicking through the hangers. “I feel like the wind here cuts right through my denim.”
“Maybe two sizes bigger so you can wear sweatpants.” You knew she was teasing you by her playful tone, but that was actually kind of brilliant, you thought. “You should try this one.”
You had to get onto your tippy toes to see her over the long rack. She was holding up a soft-looking sweater, multicolored horizontal stripes running across the fabric. The color pattern reminded you of Twiggy from the ’60s.
“It’s cute,” you agreed, taking it as she handed it to you. By the time you were ready for a fitting room, you had a pile of things and the employee on duty looked not very excited to have to put them back when you were done, but luckily she wouldn’t have to. Pretty much everything fit perfectly.
You were shocked to see the total - where you were from, all of that would have been well over $60, even second hand, but you ended up forking over a measly $35, and you figured most of that total was from the nearly new jacket you had found.
As she was driving you back to the coffee shop, you exclaimed giddily, “I’m so excited to have warm clothes. Now Josh can finally have his sweatshirts back.”
She looked over at you surprisedly. “That’s Josh’s?”
“Yeah, he gave me three and I’ve been alternating between them.” You reached forward to turn her radio up a notch, Janet Jackson’s “All For You” perking your ears.
“Are you sure he wants them back?” she asked, giving you a coy smile that you didn’t understand.
You adopted a puzzled look. If she was alluding to something, it was lost on you. “Why wouldn’t he? They’re still perfectly fine - I was even careful not to get my perfume on them.”
Now stopped at a red light, she turned to give you a squinty look until she seemed to realize you were serious. “Nevermind,” she relented, smirking forward at the road.
When you got back home, Josh was gone. You shot him a message inquiring as to his whereabouts and started snipping the tags off of your new clothes with a pair of pruning shears. You were exponentially grateful for the fact that the washing machine in your building had been repaired - and with a shocking amount of haste too.
The smell of the laundry room down the hall was pleasant. It reminded you of the times when your mom would wash all the towels and blankets in the house, and that was a job that either required a laundromat, or an entire day switching loads.
At the end of your shopping day, you made out with three new sweaters, two pairs of thicker jeans, a new coat, a winter hat, and an actual pajama set, which would be infinitely warmer than the shorts and tank top you’d moved in with.
You cheerily popped your new clothes into the washer, along with a tide pod, some of your bras and underwear, and closed the lid.
Around 1 pm, Josh still wasn’t back and hadn’t replied, so you decided it was a perfect time to work on some self-care. The yoga mat you had packed had yet to see the light of day in Michigan, so you dug it out, unrolled it in your room, changed into some easy clothing, and pulled up a beginner’s tutorial on your phone. By the thirty-minute mark, you were sweating and tired, but the stretch in your muscles was oddly pleasant on top of the discomfort, so you pushed yourself to keep going until the video was done. The cute blonde running the tutorial suggested you take some time in your cool down to look inward, as she thought that was a big part of yoga. So, you laid there on the mat, staring up at your ceiling for a good, long while, just taking time to reflect and enjoying it.
Your room, and the whole apartment really, had become home so quickly. You hadn’t ever had the opportunity to test the theory before, but you had always imagined that leaving home would make you feel out of place.
But you didn’t.
Sure, you missed home in the way that any human that came from a loving and supporting family would, but you were expecting to ache for it. You had taken a long time in your backyard and in your favorite spot back home, just so you could have a final fix, but all that was to you now was a fond memory.
After a few moments of being alone with your thoughts, you were going to get up and take a shower, but you had decided to postpone it. While you were staring up at the ceiling, you realized that there was a lot of unused space that the sun hit toward the top of the room. Wasted sun was a felony in your book. You spent about an hour pulling down your curtain rod, removing the fabric, and replacing it with hanging pots of all sizes and lengths.
Your string of hearts, your pearls, your golden pothos - the thought of them being the first thing you saw when you opened your eyes in the morning was one that made you feel sentimental. You’d just have to be careful with watering.
Once you were satisfied with the placements, you made your way to the bathroom. As you waited for the shower to heat up to a tolerable temperature, you took some time to pluck any stray hairs around your eyebrows and gently brush the knots out of your hair. Self-care had always felt like a long term investment to you - one well worth it.
The warm spray of the shower felt amazing on your tired muscles, so you took your sweet time getting clean and enjoying it, then blow-drying your hair on low heat when you were finished. After, you excitedly got out your new pajama set, clipped the tags, and put it on.
Shortly thereafter, you heard a key slip into the lock on the front door. You were cuddled up on the couch, enjoying the feel of the soft fabric on your freshly scrubbed skin as you watched through the complete second season of the Simpsons, popcorn in your lap.
When he stepped into the house, he raised his eyebrows at you, surveying the area.
“What?” you asked, giving him a confused look.
“Just looking for the books and the homework.” You rolled your eyes at him before he continued on with, “I just always assumed that when I wasn’t around, you were doing boring, adult things.”
You gave him a playful shrug as you gestured to the noticeably book free space around you.
He squinted at you suddenly. “Are you in your pajamas? You know it’s like 3:30 in the afternoon, right?”
“They’re new!” you quipped. “And I was excited to wear them. You don’t have to be jealous, you could go get yours on and join me.”
The offer seemed to be tempting him. “I have a better idea. How about you go change, and we’re going to go to a party tonight.”
You scowled at him, crossing your arms over your chest. “Are you crazy? I’m already in my pajamas. I’ve already taken my bra off! Once it’s off, it doesn’t go back on.”
He laughed, loud and unabashed, showing you all of his teeth. The sound made your cheeks flush.
“C’mon, I bet Kate will be there,” he reasoned. “And I obviously will be. And I’m positive Jake will be too. This might be your chance to get them to hook up.”
You bit your bottom lip in consideration. “The timing would be kinda perfect; she could have the whole day tomorrow to process it and then tell me about it on Monday.”
He was smirking at you when you looked back up at him, making you tuck your hair behind your ear anxiously. “If I come, do you promise not to leave me alone?”
He nodded at you confidently. “I will not leave you.”
The very first thing you did was message Kate. It was vital that she was there, just in case Josh got too drunk to remember his promise. You didn’t have a hard time socializing, per-say. You were just nervous about your first real social event here.
Josh was right though - it wouldn’t kill you to make some more friends.
When you were in the bathroom brushing your teeth, Kate messaged back saying that she would never miss getting to see you drunk, and you didn’t have the heart to tell her you had to drive, so you opted to leave that part out. You worked on picking out a good, sensible outfit and took your time to put on makeup again. Admittedly, it felt kind of nice - you used to wear a full beat all the time, but somewhere along the line it started to feel tedious, which is something you never wanted any of your favorite things to feel, so you put the whole idea of it on the shelf for a while.
When you finally emerged from your room around 8, Josh was sitting on the kitchen counter, phone in his hands as he furiously typed out a message. You listened to the pleasant sound of his fingers tapping on the glass screen for a moment before speaking.
“Who are you messaging?” you asked, but it didn’t grab his full attention right away.
“Just one of the other theater guys,” he said through a near sneer. The only time you ever saw him looking distressed was when it came to his production. “Trying to tell me what I can and can’t do with my own production-”
When he looked up at you the rest of his thoughts seemed to escape him, all the emotion in his face and posture crumbling away.
You folded your hands together, giving him a concerned look. “Are you okay?”
He tucked his phone into the pocket of his pants, abandoning whatever he had been so intent on doing just seconds ago.
“Yeah, I just haven’t ever seen you dressed up before.”
The extra attention made you slump back against the hallway wall, giving him a nervous grimace. Through pursed lips, you asked, “Is it too much?”
His eyes popped open, along with his mouth. It took him a moment to speak actual words - like he wanted to say a lot all at once. “What? No! I’m just stupid,” he assured, running his fingers through his curls. “It took my brain a moment to process.”
You gave him a forgiving smile, opening the fridge and grabbing out a carton of juice. He watched as you took a swig, letting you swallow before asking, “Do you want me to drive?”
Your eyebrows raised in surprise, finger swiping away a stray droplet. “Can you?”
“Drive?” he laughed. “Yes. I can drive.”
“Legally?” you pressed, handing over the carton to him when you caught him eyeing it. He took a drink right from the spout as well, giving you a wink that made you lovingly roll your eyes.
+++
You two seemed to unintentionally match. He was in a pair of khaki pants, a black long-sleeved shirt, and a denim jacket on top. You were positive he was going to freeze solid one of these days because he always seemed to be way underdressed for the weather.
As you went to get out of the car, he stopped you with a touch to your knee. “You should take off your jacket and hat and leave them in here; I wouldn’t ever trust leaving them unattended at a party.” He paused before speaking again. “Not that anyone would necessarily steal them, just that people get drunk and think stuff is theirs.”
“Like you did with the wallet?” you teased, making him rub at the back of his neck.
“Yes,” he said pointedly through a grin. “Like that.”
He held the sleeve of your jacket as you shrugged out of it, abandoning it into the back seat. You took just a second to mourn the fact that it would be cold when you went to put it back on.
In the rearview mirror, you fixed your hair, having been mussed by the removal of your hat, and then stepped out. He ushered you along first, reaching past you and pushing the door open for you when you had reached it. The music hit you like a wall, loud and energetic - followed quickly by the smell of alcohol. A cloud of smoke hung subtly near the ceiling, giving the room an air of mystery. You realized you hadn’t made a move to enter the house when you felt his hand on the middle of your back.
“Everything okay?” he asked, just above the volume of the music. You nodded, feeling silly for holding him up, and stepped inside.
People were moving to the music like blood reacting to a heartbeat, swaying around to the rhythms all in a pleasant unison. The scene was oddly hypnotic as the colors danced around.
The second that people could see Josh behind you, they started calling his name. Your stomach lurched for a second, scared that he was either going to leave you or drag you to a group that you didn’t know, but he waved them off instead.
“I’ll catch you guys in a minute,” he shouted through a grin so charming they couldn’t seem to muster up a shred of annoyance toward him. Then, he spoke the next part right against your ear. “You want a drink?”
“Just one,” you agreed with a nod, shivering ever so slightly as his breath hit your cheek.
In the kitchen, huddled around an island covered by bottles, was a group of people, all very visibly drunk. One of those people was Kate, dressed in a crisp looking pair of jeans, a white crop top, and a red checkered flannel shirt, left open to expose her midriff.
When she caught sight of you, she gave you a big, toothy smile. The sharp fringe of her bob moved just enough to sometimes expose a pair of gold disk earrings.
“Need a drink?” she asked as she broke away from the rest of the crowd. “I’ll make it for you.”
You put your hands up, laughing at her enthusiasm. “I’m going to let Josh make it for me,” you informed, knowing full well that she would make it strong enough to get you drunk and keep you in that state for the whole evening.
The one that Josh ended up making for you was, undeniably, a rum and Coke. Not your most favorite thing ever, but then again, this one was mostly just Coke. You made a mental note to thank him for being so considerate.
The three of you ended up in the living room, right in the throws of all the action. You’d been to a few parties back home, but this felt kind of different. Back home, it was always hot, so the parties usually spilled out into the yard in all directions. Come to think of it, you’d never been to a party where the guests weren’t making prominent use of the pool. But here everyone was packed in tightly, making a large house feel tiny.
Kate found you all a nice little corner with a love seat and some kind of weird puff you think you were meant to put your feet on. Settling in there meant you’d have to share the space with a couple of other people, but it felt worth it to not be standing in the middle of the room. Being out in the open made you feel nervous - like you were being circled by sharks.
The songs changed, but the beat seemed to stay pretty much the same, making it easy for the time to slip by without your acknowledgment. By the time you checked your watch, it was nearly eleven.
True to his word, Josh didn’t leave your side the whole night. People kept popping in and out to get a word with him. You couldn’t hear them well because he was sat across from you, but he was laughing quite a bit. Some of it looked kind of forced, but most of it seemed genuine - like he was actually having a nice time.
It wasn’t until you were close to getting ready to leave that you saw Jake making his way down the stairs, one hand on the wooden railing to steady himself and the other wrapped around a red cup. You flashed him a smile when his eyes landed on you, and he gave you one back, giving you a feather-light punch to your shoulder when he reached you.
“Move over,” he demanded in Josh’s direction, sitting nearly on top of him on the couch, with only light complaints from his twin.
“You smell like sex,” Josh said through a fake grimace, pressing his elbow into Jake’s ribs.
“Can’t imagine why,” Jake responded with a smirk, lifting the cup to his lips as you giggled at him.
The realization struck you as his eyes landed on Kate next. “Oh, Jake, this is my friend Kate. Kate, Jake Kiszka.”
She reached out and took his hand to shake and at the same moment, Josh laid his hand on your leg and through a grin, asked, “Should we take off?”
You laughed, giving him a nod.
“Kathrine, Jacob,” Josh started, clapping his hands together in front of him. “We are leaving. See you guys soon?”
“We should actually get tacos,” Kate stated seriously to the group as a whole, and then just to Josh said, “And my name is Kathleen.”

Yongary
Tumblr media
Image by Dope Pope, accessed at their ArtStation here
[I usually do my run of “monsters from movies” conversions in October, to coincide with Halloween. But I did Furtober last year instead. So I’m going to slot them into February, as a Valentines present to monster-loving folks. First up, a Korean kaiju! Yongary: Monster of the Deep is a weird movie in a number of ways. First, the original language version is lost, so you can only see it in its English dub--which is very strange in this day and age where every minor property gets super respectful treatment and 4K restorations (although there is a lovely Blu-Ray). As a ripoff primarily of Gamera, itself a ripoff of Godzilla and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, it steals ideas and even shots in a somewhat haphazard way. It feels like cargo cult filmmaking. But it was a colossal hit in South Korea, and even got an official remake/reboot to cash in on the Matthew Broderick Godzilla, so clearly it struck a nerve in its home country.]
Yongary CR 20 N Magical Beast This creature looks roughly like an oversized dinosaur, bipedal with a reptilian snout, a few rows of short ridges along the back, and spikes on the tail. A single glowing horn grows from its nose.
A yongary is an immense burrowing creature, a relic from the ancient past. Some scholars believe they are related to behemoths, or perhaps kaiju, but they are decidedly more fragile than either. Although a yongary is difficult, if not impossible, to kill with conventional weapons, they are especially sensitive to poisonous substances, particularly organic toxins and venoms. As such, they eschew consuming organic matter for minerals and pure energy. They can eat fire, lightning and even magical force, and may come to the surface to bask in forest fires or lightning strikes.  They are also fond of music.
Yongaries are of animalistic intelligence, but occasionally will make bonds with small children, vulnerable-looking animals, and other creatures that rouse a parental instinct in the beast. These are likely to be oases of calm around its rampages, and yongaries are especially good at destroying standing structures. They seek to provoke firepower from other creatures in order to absorb its energy, and use their breath weapons to set large fires they can gain healing from. A yongary has a powerful ray that can cut between atoms, and they typically save this for targets able to actually injure them.

Whenever it would take damage from one of these energy types, it instead heals 1 hit point per 3 hit points of damage that would otherwise be dealt. Hit points in excess of its max hp are gained as temporary hit points that last for 1 minute or until expended. Ruinous (Su) A yongary’s natural attacks penetrate damage reduction as if they were epic and magic, and ignore up to 20 points of hardness on objects struck. As a swift action, whenever it strikes a creature or object with a spell effect in place, it can attempt to dispel one randomly determined spell effect on that creature as if with a greater dispel magic (CL 20th). Sensitive (Ex) A yongary’s good saving throws are Reflex and Will. Its poor save is Fortitude. Slice Ray (Su) As a standard action, a yongary can fire a ray of slashing energy. Treat this as a ranged touch attack with a range of 500 feet and no range increment. A creature or object struck takes 30d8 points of slashing damage that ignores all hardness and damage reduction. A successful DC 26 Fortitude save halves the damage. A yongary can use this ability once per day, but it recharges whenever it uses its absorb energy ability. The save DC is Charisma based. Vulnerable to Poison (Ex) A yongary suffers 150% damage from any poison effects that deal hit point or ability score damage, or ability score drain.

Friday 23 March 1838
7 ½
12 35
a little small snow driving about since 8 – F39° now at 9 am writing rough draft of letter to Miss H. Crompton – breakfast at 9 ¼ - almost immediately came Holt of the Travellers Inn with the 2 petitions to Lords and commons against beer-shops – I did not keep him waiting but signed both A. Lister (column for trade or profession blank) Shibden hall – A- thought she needed not sign and I did not press it .:. she did not sign – on returning in 5 or 6 minutes to breakfast room she was gone – finished my breakfast and went out at 9 40 – A- in bad humour I could not guess why so took no notice and never went near her but she called me in on her return from Halifax – out at Listerwick with George Naylor (wright) and house all the day – at Mitham in the morning and there saw Mr. GR. at his mill and walked with him to Lower brea – he wants me to raise his currying shop which I decline doing – he was sure it could be done for £40 – if I would not do it, he must buy a bit of ground and build a place for himself – then called to ask Jonathan Mallinson what he would sell me the stone of the wall round his bowling green for – he said we should not differ – I offered him 3/. a rood and he agreed to take this price – (a rood of 7 yards length taking the wall as it is) home about just at 12 – spite of driving small snow out about while Robert Mann + 4 dined – all in the back stable except Jack Green who went home – then with them all the afternoon till 6 and afterwards with Robert about ¼ hour talking things over – they have been at the home footpath all the day – William Lord and Robert underfooted the top but one buttress – difficult job – gave way a little – the path made and drained and covered with engine ash now up to the top buttress – it 1st occurred to me this afternoon to continue the path in a straight line forwards into the cart road and gave orders accordingly said how I should like to have the piece of ground shaped between the path and road – there would be 200 yards of ground to move and take away – could be filled at 2 ½ or 3d. per load, and filled and carted to top low corner of trough of Bolland wood at 5d. per yard cube – but my own carts should do it – A- had called me in for about ½ hour between 2 and 3 on her return from H-x where she had been shopping and read me long letter from her sister – annoyed about SW-‘s neglect about the water getting in and spoiling the ceilings at Crownest – came in about 6 ¼ [?] with cold – dressed – could hardly hold my pen but wrote in 25 minutes and sent the following 2 ½ pp. to ‘Miss Henrietta Crompton, Micklegate York’ – ‘Shibden Hall. Friday 23 March 1838. My dear Henrietta – It really grieves me not to be able to avail myself of your si aimable invitation; but the simple truth is, that I am not just now rich enough in time to afford myself so agreeable a holiday – I am in the midst of tiresome troubles, and buys preparing to get rid of them as well as I can by running away as soon as I can to somewhere on the other side the water – at one time, I hoped to spend next Easter at Rome – but the season is now too far advanced – Hurry and the being obliged to set out ones’ stages as it were on the way-bill of a stage coach, are bane of all comfort in travelling – Life should then be free as air, or the thraldom is fatal to more than half the pleasures we have counted on – Place may be changed without the mind being instructed or relived – we are still amid the rigours of winter – but surely summer is coming; and, consequently, the current of our talk sets northerly – London must be passed thro’; and, if friends there do not veer us round to some other point we shall probably steer in the direction of Northern Germany – It is nearly four years since I have breathed continental air; and the sole of my foot will not rest in London longer than necessary; but, if I have 5 minutes to spare, I will call on Lady Herries – I suppose she is where she was – the blue book will shew – I am very sorry you have been on the invalid lost again lately – would not some nice little summer tour do you good? why not the Rhine? Ems is a charming place, with every comfort, and who has known it fail in good society? what sketching! From Hull to Rotterdam and Ems, no difficulty – I shall be glad to compare notes on our mutual return – my kind regards to your sisters at home , and believe me always very faithfully yours A. Lister’ – dinner at 7 35 – A- read aloud her 2 pp. of French coffee – read the newspaper – then wrote all the above of today till 11 55 – a minute or 2 in the tower and came to my room just before 12 struck at which hour F31 ½° - cold rather windy day with driving small snow or rain the greater part of the day – George N-‘s cart and my own carting scale from Listerwick to road along embankment opposite the house   Letter tonight or rather this afternoon brought by George 2 ¼ pp. begging from Mrs. Bradley dated 22nd instant Acomb near York – wife of Mr. William B- architect
