Countdown to the Darkhold Diaries: Day 564
Agatha: “DON’T DO IT PLEASE NO NO”
Wanda: “I can. And I will. Unless you stop making dead robot husband jokes!”
Y/N: “HOLD ON HOLD ON”
Agatha: “You can hurt me - but don’t hurt my precious!!!”
Wanda: “You say one more thing about how my fancy toaster husband got fried, and your book goes bye bye!”
Agatha: “Just because my book on butterfly and moth identification is here - and your glorified laptop got hit with a live-wire by Thanos - doesn’t mean you have to punish it!”
Y/N: “You just couldn’t help yourself, could you?”
Wanda: “THAT’S IT I’M RIPPING OUT A PAGE, STARTING WITH THE SPHINX MOTH”
Agatha: “NOT THE MOTHS NO PLEASE YOU WRETCH”

My other thought for the night is that. I miss oc x canon fics.
Like, I know there's still some people writing them, but mostly they're either gone or filtered through so many layers of irony or scrubbing clean that they don't actually land.
I personally have no interest in reading canon x canon or cannon x reader, and it's really sad to me how much oc x canon has declined in popularity since I was a kid. I remember reading all those stories about the main character's long lost twin sister from [random other country] who was super cool and powerful and special and different (like the main character often was in the source material) and some random side character who the fandom fell in love with would fall in love with her, and I loved them so much!!
But now even when you search specifically for fics with original characters, they're never the main character and they're never given the attention and love they deserve. And a large part of that was because of the bullying and whatnot around "Mary-Sue"s and oc x canon and just... idk fandom being shitty and obsessed with the idea of "good" vs "bad" stories rather than acknowledging personal tastes and the fact that fanfic is supposed to fill a different creative niche than professionally published works.
Idk I just miss reading those fics because they're the only kind of fic I'm actually interested in. And I remember not long before that change really came about, a lot more oc x canon fics involved trans/nonbinary/otherwise queer ocs, polyamoury, and more representation in general that clearly came from authors writing about their own experiences! We were so close to having a great thing! And then it just dropped off pretty much. No more unironic, unapologetic, self-indulgent oc x canon fic. So I stopped reading fic for a long time, and even now I don't read much of it tbh.
And it's not that people aren't interested in writing it!! I talk to people all the time who want to write oc x canon but are scared no one wants to read it. And it makes me so sad cause it's the only thing I want to read!!!! I don't give a shit about canon x canon, and I don't really care for reader x canon because it makes assumptions about the reader that frequently aren't accurate to me.
I'm definitely gonna try to move more towards writing oc x canon (and oc x oc, and even oc x reader) fic more because it's what I want to see. I want none of the irony or pushing ocs into side roles only. I want self indulgence and "overpowered" (read: main characters) ocs and oc x canon romance! I want ocs that are hyperspecific to the author, who live out the life the author wishes they could if they were in that world. I wanna read something and know the author had a blast writing it! I wanna get deeply invested in shipping someone else's oc with canon characters! I want it so bad, please give it back to me, please...

Tell me about your au plz :3
(IMPORTANT NOTE: I REFER TO CHARACTERS BY THEIR ACTUAL NAMES IF I DON'T HAVE A NAME FOR THEM YET, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT I'M NAMING ANYONE NYA OR WYLDFYRE OR ANY OF THAT!!!)
OK !!! So the details are very messy cuz I just came up with this idea last night while drawing my guy the Nightmare King from Dreamzzz... Basically it's this super self-indulgent story where I just mix shit from Dreamzzz/Ninjago/LMK/Chima for the fucken sake of it!!!
In this story, the main characters are a Kai ripoff, Nya ripoff, and a Wyldfyre ripoff!!! Wyldfyre ripoff is Kai's youngest sister (Kai 22, Nya 20, Wyldfyre 8-10, probably 10), and she also has a pet dragon who she found years ago (knockoff Heatwave!!!)
For elemental powers, those are like these magical crystals called Elemental Cores, which you are blessed with (idk how yet) by ancient dragon lords (they all go by kings but they're not all men.) Kai has his Core somehow, and same for Nya! Unfortunately, Wyldfyre doesn't yet, either due to being too young or not proven herself yet! She doesn't let it bum her out too much because her epic dragon can grant her sort of temporary Core powers (kinda like Chi from Chima). Unbeknownst to them there's a special reason Wyldfyre and the others can accept powerups like this without detrimental side effects (I won't tell.)
The story goes something like this, a few years ago (probably between 3-5) Kai's parents and uncles (in this story Wu and Garmadon are his uncles) mysteriously go missing, and in present day he hears rumors of an ancient dragon king (Overlord) whose darkness has slowly been festering and increasing greatly. Initially, Kai doesn't care, "Surely if this nonsense were to be true, the great Dragon Knights (he doesn't know it, but they're his dad and uncles) will find out about and stop it!" Idk WHY he decides to go yet, but he takes Nya and the dragon, and leaves Wyldfyre with the others... but she does her own thing and follows. It's too late to turn back now, so reluctantly, Kai has to keep his baby sister out of trouble!
For characters, I'm not too sure how many I'm taking from which series' yet...
I know I have Kai, Nya, Wyldfyre, a Lloyd/Arin combo possibly, Jay, Ray, Maya, Wu, Garmadon, the Overlord, and Misako. I'm ALSO taking Lord Ras for self-indulgence reasons, and renaming naming him Korros (for fun and maybe Wu/Korros exes yaoi!) I also know I wanna get some Monkie Kid inspiration, so I'm thinking of the Lady Bone Demon, but crossed with fanon interpretations of the Preeminent as well! Also, again self-indulgence, Nightmare King from Dreamzzz, and also totally Cinder come the fuck on I need Cinder.
I dunno if I'll add Zane or Cole tho... part of me wants to do a Kalmaar knockoff just for one hyperspecific joke of like, Korros is taking forever to find some hidden mechanism in a wall, and Kalmaar goes "you know, i wouldnt have killed my father if i knew what followed would be so boring."
I have many other thoughts brewing in my brain but WHEW thats the gist of it.
PLEASE ASK ME MORE!!!

as some of you guys may know, july is mogai month! which means, as a respectable member of society, i've gotta do my part to make this one great. therefore... 31 days of mogai! let's go!
anyone and everyone who would like can do this challenge! some prompts are aimed at coiners, but there's always gonna be a non-coiner alt for everybody to join in the fun.
1 - what’s your favorite gender you’ve coined? non-coiners, what’s your favourite gender you’ve requested?
2 - what’s your favorite pronoun set that you use? that you’ve seen?
3 - share your gender hoard with us!
4 - coin a self indulgent gender! non-coiners, describe your “dream gender”!
5 - coin a gender as a gift for somebody else! non-coiners, tag someone who’s making this mogai month special.
6 - what got you into the mogai community? what was your “mogai awakening”?

10 - what do you use to make your flags? non-coiners, try your hand at coining something!
11 - describe your gender for us without using the words “feminine,” “masculine,” “neutral,” “cute,” “little,” any food, color, or any animal/plant (the more poetic the better!)
12 - if you could make a flag symbolising yourself, what colours would you use and why?
13 - describe someone close to you, like a best friend or significant other!

17 - share your favorite piece of queer media!
18 - what's your favorite hyperspecific xenogender?
19 - do you identify with any attraction/sexuality terms under the mogai umbrella?
20 - who introduced you to the mogai community? alternatively, who was the first mogai creator you followed?
21 - give a shoutout to a small or new blog! shouting out yourself is completely acceptable <3
22 - do you have a tagging system? if so, what is it? how did you come up with it?
23 - do you plan on celebrating this month with anything special? have you already done so?
24 - what's the most visually appealing flag in your opinion?
25 - mogai-fy your favorite animal! that's up for any interpretation you care to give it.
26 - do you have any mogai friends irl?
27 - when did you get into the mogai community? where?
28 - describe your mogai journey! were you ever an exclus? what changed your views? (no pressure to answer those last two questions!)
29 - favorite plant themed term? favorite animal themed term?
30 - how much of our history do you know? trivia bonus: what was the first ever mogai acronym and what did it stand for? no googling!
31 - back to the beginning! what's your favorite term you've coined? non-coiners, what's your favorite term you've requested?
i can't wait to see what you all do! please tag me in your posts and/or tag them all with "31 days of mogai" and "mogai day [x]" so i can see them!

8, 9, 16?
thank u for the ask <33
8. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write?
I mean this is kind of a trick question i feel like because really my first answer to this is pretty much always going to be “whatever characters I’m into writing at this moment” skjnfskjdnfs i generally find it kind of difficult to get back into writing characters i don’t write for anymore BUT in the interest of answering this fairly i will instead opt to say that characters i typically find easiest to write tend to be on the more introverted/introspective side of the spectrum, esp characters who are prone to overthinking and anxiety coding [I’m a big ball of anxiety myself, what do you want from me].
So off the top of my head, my top 3 characters in the past I’ve found easiest to write would probably include:
David Schreibner (Druck)
Matteo Florenzi (Druck)
Bram Greenfeld (Love Simon)
As for right now I think I’m still trying to nail down how i write kieu my and fatou’s (druck) voices so i can’t really say yet which i find easier until i’m more used to writing them but i will say i really enjoy writing them both which is promising!
9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?
Conversely I find extraverted or Gryffindor type characters [i.e bold and brash and reckless and impulsive] to be VERY difficult to write. so go figure i almost never write those kinds of characters skdjdnfskdjnfs but i think of my published fics probably the one i had the biggest challenge with nailing a voice down for was Holster from Check Please. in unpublished stuff i’ve most recently had a lot of trouble with Dave Strider from homestuck [also he has such a distinctive way of speaking it drives me fucking insane] which is probably why the likelihood of a homestuck fic ending up on my ao3 [in 2021 no less skjnfskdjnfs] is... very low
10. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?
Hmmmm I don’t generally believe in the concept of a guilty pleasure [if it gives me pleasure why tf should i feel guilty about it u know] but if we’re talking tropes/topics that are very self-indulgent here is a non-exhaustive list:
Bed-sharing
h a n d s
wound care [my dissertation on the inherent homoeroticism of, 2021]
royalty/body guard [maybe i haven’t written this yet but MAYBE I WILL ONE DAY]
Childhood best friends to lovers [A+]
Childhood best friends to strangers to lovers [A+++]
Childhood best friends to enemies to lovers [Absolutely godtier]
marching band aus [i only have one marching band au on my ao3 myself but it is pretty much the most self-indulgent thing i have ever written as something that is Incredibly Niche and Hyperspecific to My Personal Experiences so]
anyway i have a brand and that brand is gay tenderness. what can you do
q’s for fanfiction writers!

CAROLINE ROSE - FEEL THE WAY I WANT
[6.23]
A pretty good week for the hyperspecific subgenre of "critically acclaimed works involving long Southern road trips..."
Alfred Soto: With the synths chiming and the drum machines thudding, "Feel the Way I Want" positions itself as a retro move in which insouciance is its own reward. I don't get a sense of who Caroline Rose is. [5]
Camille Nibungco: Caroline Rose has the aesthetic sensibilities of a fourth Haim sister but with catchier pop hooks, like those of an underproduced Saint Motel song. However, the simple thematic message of "just be yourself," underscored by the melodic electro-pop keyboard instrumental breaks, puts me in such a nostalgic groove for simpler times. [8]
Joshua Copperman: Did not expect a pivot to monogeneric synth-pop after the under-appreciated chaos of Loner. This will probably find a bigger audience, but it's basically Haim covering "Gone," except half as good as that sounds. I'm about as bored with lines like "I'm so in love with myself/It's so romantic" as I am with "Pretending not to be popular/even though I'm a pop star." She pulls it off, but it's enough to make me want to learn Tracery and write a script about this kind of thing. [6]
Katherine St Asaph: Landfill indiepop, definitely, but seems more like landfill indiepop of the Hype Machine era, not landfill indiepop of the Spotify era. I'm not quite sure what the distinction is, except that there is one -- mild guitars? Attempts at funk? [3]
Josh Langhoff: For indie synth-funk whose ground zero is "Electric Feel," this is pretty authoritative. Each keyboard line sounds more stoned than whatever it jostles out of its way, and Rose provides a bunch of dork-friendly singalong hooks. Now, if someone could just please ID the bassline -- I've ruled out "Stiletto," "Lovely Day," and "Backwater," and I'm not getting anything else done, help. [8]
Brad Shoup: It sounds like recycled Unknown Mortal Orchestra. There's a c. 1980 boogie classic in here somewhere. [6]
Vikram Joseph: The sort of frisky disco-pop that could convince you that January might, at some point, no longer be an ongoing concern. The synths bubble and squelch like a video game, Caroline Rose goofs her way from coast to coast in the video, and it's such a wholesome experience that the slightly milquetoast declarations of self-love sound almost radical. [7]
Juana Giaimo: I'm not the biggest fan of high-self-esteem anthems, but the slightly danceable beat, the sharp keyboards and Caroline Rose's breathy vocals are very suitable for these summer days in the Southern Hemisphere. What I most enjoy is that, against the relaxed tone of the song, the lyrics seem kind of ironic: "Everybody's so quick to sit you down and say 'try to be cool about it'. Baby, watch me freak out." [7]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: She says that she wants us to watch her "freak out," but there's not really anything freaky here -- not even the barely concealed tension of Rose's earlier work. But there's nothing wrong with that. Instead, an overwhelming sense of calm breathes through the whole song, with a strong drum groove and psychedelic synth accents allowing the track to flow. It's freedom in a track, tensionless in the best way. [7]
Kylo Nocom: When compared to Natalie Prass's equally sunny "Short Court Style," "Feel the Way I Want" comes off as uncomfortably postured, as if suffocating in the feigned flightiness of its arrangements. The song's best moment is at the 2:04 mark, when the arrangement is stripped to a pointed bassline and a more confident, falsetto-free delivery by Caroline. But not soon after, the song becomes even more grating self-love corn with the song's sleekness being its downfall. Reviews praised her sarcastic wit in the past; I wonder if the giddy platitudes are all just one huge joke I don't get. [4]
Ryo Miyauchi: Caroline Rose's proclamations of taking back control sound more like a wishful mantra than actual self-realization. The scrappy feel of the DIY new wave gives the music some twee character, but is a fault when it comes to actually supporting the message. [5]
Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Don't bother listening to the song by itself until you've seen the video; the experience won't be complete. Hilarious, heartwarming, and instantly iconic, Caroline Rose shimmies her way through the American South from Hollywood to Florida, with dance moves that I can't do justice to in writing. The best I can describe it is that she looks like she's having so, so much fun, she doesn't even realize she's singing a song. She's like a kid just reveling in the wonder of her own body, unaware of and indifferent to anything else. None of this would matter if the song wasn't there though -- a catchy, if unassuming, self affirmation anthem coasting on the power of Caroline Rose's charisma. [7]
Julian Axelrod: There's a specific synth sound I associate with Caroline Rose: chintzy and propulsive, detached yet richly emotive, like a Vegas lounge singer breaking down in tears mid-song. The synth doubles as the perfect complement to her lyrics' dead-eyed stare. Rose's turns of phrase have so many layers of irony that the emotional gut punch comes as a surprise. Here, "gonna feel the way I want to feel" is an empowerment platitude fashioned into a threat. The commodification of self-care has made monsters of us all, turning indulgence into a lifestyle. But Rose mixes self-love with a lot of self-loathing, embodying an influencer who will destroy anyone who threatens the happiness that destroys her. It's camp, it's commentary, it's Caroline fucking Rose. [8]
