A REVIEW: Witness for the Prosecution at Trinity Theatre
Tumblr media
Reviewing work by Agatha Christie is something of a headache without spoiling the ending, but I shall do my best…
Known for her seemingly bottomless repertoire of “whodunits”, including The Mousetrap, a play that has been running in London for over 70 years at time of writing. Christie’s work has stood the test of time because she was the master of deception; nothing is ever as it seems and in a world of never-ending Netflix murder documentaries, audiences clearly still love a good murder mystery to this day.
In Witness for the Prosecution, Christie applies her skills to a courtroom setting. Witness has had numerous revivals since opening in the 50’s, including the still-running 2017 London at County Hall. With it proving to be a hot ticket for London audiences, it’s not surprising that amateur groups up and down the country are rushing to have a stab at it (if you’ll pardon the pun).
I had the pleasure of seeing Sandra Barfield’s production with the Trinity Theatre Club on its opening night. We entered the auditorium to a stage with open tabs revealing the courtroom set. Credit must go to Nick Green and his team for putting together a highly-effective set, which would also double up as Sir Wilfred Robarts’ offices.
This production boasted a large cast and everyone gave highly convincing performances. Ashley Munson gave us a Leonard Vole that you’d struggle to believe guilty of committing such a violent crime. David Adams and Emma Harrison were very convincing as the defence and prosecution respectively, and I have to applaud them for expertly navigating the very wordy courtroom scenes in a manner that was still engaging for the audience. Alan Round, reprising his role from the recent Oast Theatre production, was very believable as Justice Wainwright and occasionally added a touch of much-needed humour to some of his lines. A standout performance for me was Bridget Collins as Romaine Vole, Bridget gave a lot of nuance to her role and you never knew quite where you stood with her. The rest of the cast, of which there are too many to give individual write ups, all helped to immerse us in the plot and there were no weak links. I have to give special mention to Patsy Dale and Nick Smith who had small parts as the stenographer and court clerk with either little or no speaking parts, but were always engaged in the action on stage, again adding to the feeling this is a genuine court.
All of the costumes were excellent and suited each character as well as the time period. I did find it a bit odd that Mr Mayhew wasn’t wearing a wig in the courtroom scenes, which made a line addressed to him from another character later in the play (“I didn’t recognise you without your wig”) somewhat odd. James Dean and Lauren Cooper’s lighting and sound design also added to the atmosphere of the piece.
Overall, I highly enjoyed this production and I spent most of the evening gripped by the events. Well done all!
Andy Sunnucks
Witness for the Prosecution was produced by Trinity Theatre Club and ran at the Trinity Theatre from 1st - 4th March 2023.

A Secret History of Consciousness by Gary Lachman
For the last four centuries, science has tried to account for everything in terms of atoms and molecules and the physical laws they adhere to. Recently, this effort was extended to try to include the inner world of human beings. Gary Lachman argues that this view of consciousness is misguided and unfounded. He points to another approach to the study and exploration of consciousness that erupted into public awareness in the late 1800s.
In A Secret History of Consciousness, consciousness is seen not as a result of neurons and molecules, but as responsible for them - meaning, it is not imported from the outer world, but rather creates it. In this view, consciousness is a living, evolving presence, the development of which can be traced through different historical periods, and which evolves along a path to a broader, more expansive state. What that consciousness may be like and how it may be achieved is a major concern of this book.
Lachman concentrates on the period since the late 1800s, when Madame Blavatsky first brought the secret history out into the open. As this history unfolds, we encounter the ideas of many modern thinkers, from esotericists like P. D. Ouspensky, Rudolf Steiner, and Colin Wilson to more mainstream philosophers like Henri Bergson, William James, Owen Barfield, and the psychologist Andreas Mavromatis.
Two little known but important thinkers play a major role in his synthesis: Jurij Moskvitin, who showed how our consciousness relates to the mechanisms of perception and to the external world and Jean Gebser, who presented, perhaps, the most impressive case for the evolution of consciousness.

We all know the big names, and blue checked verified Black Fashion instagrammers: Kahlana Barfield Brown, Shiona Turini, Tamu McPherson,  Nikkiogun, Aurora James, and etc. These creators definitely deserves to be on your list of most influential Black influencers, but who, and where are the new faces of Black Fashion?
Tumblr media
Most sites are currently publishing the same contrived lists, of the same “10 Black Fashion Influencers,” but let’s face it, if you are already into fashion, you probably already follow Elaine Welteroth, Jan-Michael Quammie, Gabi Fresh, Va$htie, and the rest of the crew. No one is making a list of the new girls, the new faces of fashion, which we so direly need, so I did. A new list of new Black Fashion influencers making a name for themselves with new content, new fashions, and forever classic style.
These stylish, fashion-forward creators have what it takes to brighten up your instagram feed, and inspire your outfit choices—unique looks, thrifted/vintage finds, straight off the runway pieces, and everyday wearable outfits. Not to mention, their lightroom presets make for some beautiful instagram layouts.

another concept: angel saurèz and james barfield. omg and they should just recast it with like maybe alex blake or emily or derek or spence. i feel like having more than two from the original cast would ruin it. but have i thought of a whole cast list of ocs i would love to see? yes will i be listing it rn? Of fucking course.
gemma chan - blair zhang; tech analyst. pilot would include maybe penny coming back and seeing the new tech analyst??
dev patel - adam khatri; profiler and rly funny. rly likes kendrick lamar but secretly bops to taylor swift. running joke is him trying to hide his addiction. but like, he hates fighting. he’s rly clumsy but manon always makes the joke that everybody on the team is attracted to him so it doesn’t matter anyway. or like manon would say that the unsub is prolly secretly in luv with adam so he should just go first.
lakieth stanfield - james barfield; got into the job because of derek morgan and still calls him daily with updates if he isn’t on the team anymore. angel and him work very well as a team. he doesn’t have any mercy at all for any unsubs relating to child cases. he has a secret crush on ivy but she doesnt know.
medalion rhami - ivy ahmadi; press liaison and communications officer. the funniest and loves angel and james. she makes a joke out of everything but its rly so she doesnt have to think about the gore and sickness of it all.
victoria pedretti - manon bourgès; profiler. ivy & manon are very close. manon likes to write “stories” about her unsubs when trying to comb through large lists. its weird but works. has a crush on adam. super fcking obvious too
unknown as angel; profiler. he’s rly cool but smart. he loves taylor swift, sza, beyoncè but likes kanye west and adam and him ALWAYSSSS fight about it. he’s super smart, and loves Harry Potter. he also loves having a dance party at the end of a case. he brings out his lil speaker and just starts playing 22 until blair pressures every to join. he still talks to derek and sometimes him, spencer and james just hang out.
oh my god this would be so interesting???? cbs could NEVER do this but it would be really cool if it did happen 😭
tbh i love ur ideas and you could 100% write a fic or something with these new characters???? im sure many people would be interested in this concept!!

At our next gathering, we'll gush about our literary crushes....who have you been swooning over lately?  February 10th, noon SLT - hope to see you then...bring a friend!
----------
Recommendations from Book Lovers Coffee Hour, January 13th, 2019:
Cowboy Bebop - manga/anime, recommended by Fleming. He also recommends Deathnote and Stein's Gate. Zoe added 'Nana' to the list.
In case you missed it from the announcement, the theme of our discussion was formative books that have shaped our RL or SL selves. The theme was inspired by the 3 Books podcast: https://www.3books.co/. It features a series of interviews where guests share their 3 most formative books.
AleAsimov recommends Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger - she mentioned that Holden Caulfield spoke to her...she totally got him and could relate to him. Zoe also read Catcher in the Rye when she was a teen and agrees!
Annie's formative choice was a children's book that wasn't even a book initially, but a radio broadcast...C.S. Lewis' Narnia series. Fleming added Lewis' 'Perelandria Trilogy'. We chatted a bit about Lewis' friendship with Tolkien and the other Inklings (thanks for reminding us about the group, Annie!) and Zoe was reminded of a book that's on her TBR list, 'The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings— J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Owen Barfield, Charles Williams' by by Philip Zaleski and Carol Zaleski.
The Worm Ouroboros by Eddison - amazing early fantasy written in 1922, with language straight from the King James Bible - recommended by Fleming. Tolkien knew it.
Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. Highly recommended by Zoe - it was her chosen formative book.
Fleming's avi was named after a poet called 'Fleming Helphenstine' by Edward Arlington Robinson.
And one last book...though it isn't a formative book - just something Zoe started reading this morning...The Abortion: An Historical Romance 1966 by Richard Brautigan. It's about an odd little library that accepts books from anyone who wishes to donate their unpublished manuscript - but they must bring it to the library themselves. The donor rings a silver bell, the book is catalogued by the date and time the donor arrived, then the donor is permitted to place the book on whichever shelf suits his or her fancy. So all these random people drop by with their books...a lot of kids with books about their dog or cat....and old lady who wrote about growing tulips by candlelight....etc.  It's a very charming tale.
----------
Book Lovers Coffee Hour is about widening our reading horizons.  We meet on the 2nd Sunday of every month at noon SLT and share what we've been reading.  If you haven't read anything because life's been busy, no worries.  Just come and listen :)

Cambridge – Introduction
Cambridge is located in the south east of England, about an hour’s drive north from London. We often combine tours to the city with a visit to Oxford, home to another famous English university.

Famous architects with buildings in the city include Sir Christopher Wren, James Stirling and Foster + Partners. Other key architects with work in the city include William Wilkins, George Basevi, Leslie Martin, Powell & Moya Architects, Gillespie Kidd & Coia and Edward Cullinan Architects. All these feature on our Cambridge Architecture Tours but note the Schlumberger Cambridge Research Center by Michael Hopkins and Partners is a fair walk west of the city.

The city is famous for its old and distinguished University. Like its twin city Oxford it has much brilliant historic and contemporary architecture. Cambridge is set on the River Cam and many of the colleges back onto gardens along the river, called The Backs, giving Cambridge a lot of its charm. Each college competes against the other to attain better and more beautiful architecture.
Cambridge Central Mosque building design by Marks Barfield Architects: photo : Morley von Sternberg The urban intervention of inserting a mosque capable of welcoming 1000 worshipers within a low rise, residential neighbourhood, without dominating it, is masterful. Its presence is clear but modest, considering the size of the mosque relative to the two storey terrace houses around it.

Cambridge Walking Tours – Traditional, Contemporary or Both
Cambridge Architecture Tours can focus on traditional or contemporary buildings or mix of the two. The Cambridge Architecture Tour is typically an introduction to the city’s main buildings but it can be tailored to your group’s interests if you provide information to us in good time.
We are usually able accommodate your group’s specific needs and architectural interests on our Cambridge Architecture Tours. Visitors are generally met by the guide at the starting point of their architectural walking tour but it might be possible for your group to be collected from their hotel on request.

William Wilkins, who designed the National Gallery facing Trafalagar Square in London, designed some of the original buildings, all in a Neoclassical style. Towards the end of the the twentieth century there was ccontroversy when Quinlan Terry completed some small new buildings on the west side of the campus. They formed a vivid ccontrast to the predominant contemporary style typical in the work of fellow English architects like Norman Foster and the late Richard Rogers.

Most of their designs used expressed concrete structure, but this large group of spaces is built in brick throughout. In some of their Scottish buildings brick panels sit between concrete columns and pilasters, but here the forms are more homeogenous due to the total brick envelope. I had the fortune to sit on various architecture juries with GK&C architect Isi Metzstein and found him to be a very talented and knowledgeable architect. Adrian Welch, founding Editor.
