i really love the take on jenna as an adopted kid in the original series

like she noticeably looks very different from everyone else in her family. once she becomes princess, she lives somewhere different than her family, and there is a very clear difference between her as a royal and her parents as Not.

and yet whenever anybody makes any sort of comment about it or insinuates that this means she is not really a Heap, she gets so fucking mad.

like only in book 1 does she get angsty about it, and nicko very quickly lets her know that nothing has changed just cuz she knows who her birth mom is now, that she's obviously still One Of Them

and after that. she is rude to people who insinuate. she's passive aggressive and firm and she won't hear any of it once she sees where the convo is going. her dad helps her shut it down. it's so good!!!

and it's very obviously conveyed as "ugh, [x] person is doing that 'you're not a Heap' thing, they're so dumb". rather than being something that actually makes jenna feel sad or question her position as a Heap. because after that first time, we know as well as she does that this isn't a fact that's up for debate. yeah she looks different. yeah she has birth parents. what about it? why would any of that change the immutable fact of her being part of this family?

it also gets interesting when you consider the septimus paradox. what makes him a "real" Heap if she is not? if they're not "really" siblings, which one is the Heap? the son who carries their blood but who doesn't know them, wasn't raised with them? or the daughter who carries different blood but from her first day of life has been the youngest sister in the house?

the answer obviously presenting as: they're both! flyte even confronts the fact that while he is the lost child, jenna is more of a Heap than he is and maybe will ever be, and it makes him uncomfortable.

the original books so unequivocally say that it is absurd to consider adopted kids anything other than a genuine part of their family, and it's so refreshing how they do it. i love that jenna gets frustrated, rather than angsty. i love that her and silas make fun of the royal planner woman for suggesting she's not a Heap, because isn't she being so silly? she's denying basic reality! it's just all such a good take on it and i love her

I know Silas is a fan fav; but at the beginning of Magyk I HATE this man. During the assassination attempt and subsequent fleeing I think you could reasonably argue that Marcia is having the worst time of anyone in the party (if she is second to anyone it’s Sep, and even then it’s close). This woman has relived the worst day of her life, gotten stinky and slimy (and we all know she’s ND so that would be hell) and then harnessed so much magyk she almost ceased to be a human while everyone acted like she was doing nothing that hard at all, in order to save everyone’s lives for a SECOND time in this sequence of events (and don’t forget in all of this she also managed to save Sally Mullin too).

Then, just as she thought they might be safe for a bit (it’s midnight on this beach and she was awoken very early by alther if you recall from the Scene of Hair Curlers™️, so she’s probably creeping up on 20 hours of being awake) Alther comes and tells her 1) the one terrible thing she thought she’d done enough to stop happening had, in fact, happened. 2) the only person we hear Marcia mention with any kind of positive attitude; and by extension, someone she could trust, is dead. 3) that person was murdered as a direct result of number 1. 4) Not only has this insane sociopath that would very much like her dead not only invaded her place of work, that clearly makes up part of her identity, but also 5) moved into her HOME (siri play my tears ricochet by taylor swift) which is an absolute violation.

The Very Short List of people Marcia trusts and cares about gets another person on it murdered, and Marcia does not have the time to mourn her AT ALL because she knows she needs to focus on how she can undo this mess without causing the death of a ten year old girl. And what does Silas say? ‘The custodians are simply a load of thugs any *decent* ExtraOrdinary Wizard would have seen off years ago’. Be so fucking real right now. Fuck you man. She saved your sorry arse TWICE. She kept you and your family alive for TEN YEARS. SHES THE ONLY REASON YOU DIDN’T WATCH YOUR TEN Y/O KID GET VIOLENTLY MURDERED. SIT TF DOWN.

UR TAGS YEAH. Without marcia, sarah would not have 2 of her children. And it IS without marcia specifically. Because if it had been anyone else who was eow during that time they might not have chosen the heaps for jenna. And they probably wouldn't have stopped to talk with the child soldier put there specifically to make them look stupid. Like it was not the ExtraOrdinary Wizard who saved her children it was Marcia Overstrand. Honestly I am constantly thinking abt marcia+sarah being friends bc it would be fun but ignoring that. Sarah WOULD be so mad abt it. And it would be so funny

Sarah is so funny to me; Silas doesn't get along with Marcia because they have an EOW Apprentice Rivalry and they must bicker about it or they'll die. Sarah, seemingly, just doesn't like Marcia because she is taking up Septimus' time (and Marcia is arguably as much as or more his mother than Sarah!) and she's jealous. I like to think that, ironically, the more positive influence Marcia has in her kids' life the more she can't stand her.

Sarah learns from Jenna years later that the reason Boy 412 (Septimus!) had come with them to Aunt Zelda's in the first place was because Marcia dug him out of the snow and saved his life and carried him all the way upstairs in her arms. Then she remembers that Marcia had also saved Jenna from the assassin, twice, and something wars inside of her between immense gratitude and so much annoyance that it was Marcia of all people and she just sits in silence for minutes while her face grows red.
