At 3 AM Sighted very high land ahead capped with Snow. Stood for it and did not get close to it until 8 PM: it must have been at least 60 miles from us at first sight. It appears to be a large tract of land principaly of a towering height: void of all verdure and nearly all covered with Snow. There is a great quantity of Ice adhering to it and some very large "bergs", cannot say what it will be called as its extent is not ascertained yet and no boat been ashore. Standing off & on: at at night Kept away and Stood down to Leeward running along the Land.

Ross, Voyage. I. p. 183. ‘…soon after 2 A.M. the officer of the watch, Lieutenant Wood, reported that the land itself was distinctly seen directly ahead of the ship.

‘It rose in lofty peaks, entirely covered with perennial snow; it could be distinctly traced from S.S.W. to S.E. by S (by compass), and must have been more than one hundred miles distant when first seen… The highest mountain of this range I named after Lieutenant-Colonel Sabine, of the Royal Artillery, Foreign Secretary of

the Royal Society, one of the best and earliest friends of my youth, and to whom this complement was more especially due, as having been the first proposer and one of the most active and zealous promoters of the expedition.’

Ross, Voyage. I. p. 248. ‘The whole of the great southern land we had discovered, and whose continuity we had traced from the seventieth to the seventy-ninth degree of latitude, received the name of our Most Gracious Sovereign Queen Victoria, as being the earliest and most remote southern discovery since Her Majesty's accession to the throne.’ Shown on the chart in Ross, Voyage. II. at end as South Victoria, and now called Victoria Land.

A-T-4 019 John Davis the original voice of Milli Vanilli

Not be confused with super disco producer and bandleader John Davis, this is John Davis who would become one of the original voices of Milli Vanilli with Brad Howell that we found out about when the faces of the band Fab Morvan and Rob Pilatus were exposed as a sham duo in what would be called 'the lip-syncing scandal' in 1989. It was the subject of a documentary that aired last year called Milli Vanilli

Like you hear about a lot especially when it comes to Germany or Italy, John Davis was in the US army and stationed in Germany and played at Army clubs. Between 1983 and 1984 he put out a string of electrofunk records under various aliases on the German label Metrovynil, this culminated with the album Destination Earth

Some of the releases are very good. They range from Roger Troutmanesque funk to full fat electro. There's loads of vocoder. Here are a few for your consideration:

J.D. (Puma) Lewis - Check It Out this was previously unreleased outtake

He also collaborated with Blowfly' on one of his early 80s electrofunk efforts put out by Metrovynil, Funk You Vol3 from 1983. Of Course Clarence Reid "Blowfly" grew up in Florida so you can see how this works

Darla Records is more versatile than one could have asssumed and we have noticed they house many intriguing idioms under their roof despite them having a certain base. Look, they were basically founded as an indie rock label, so they have to some indie rockers, correct? Well, they do have a couple of them, though I shall present to you Superdrag. To be honestly, I'm mostly doing this thanks to them sounding like a group that worked during the 90's on the scene. Yes, they could sound generically indie for you, though let us be honest here – indie rock industrial complex might be to blame in here, since the latter slowly modified into a set of sonic signifiers that amount to the soundscape many of their peers use as a brand.
