The finale is gonna kill me because it's a long time coming. Seasons of build-up that show case Dennis' mental health declining, all the anger and suffering he's harbored for years and years finally coming to the surface is gonna be something so cathartic to watch. I want the mask ripped away, all the makeup and layers of defense he's cocooned himself with stripped.

“Riverdale was my Julliard” is an insane thing to say
I have not been able to stop thinking about that sentence since I first read it
What a way to kickstart an Oscar campaign 😂

"CATALINA!" My name echoes down the hallway as my mother screams. "LINA! WAKE UP!" I startle awake just as my door opens. Paola De La Torre wouldn't know what the word maternal meant even if it slapped her across the face. She thinks I haven't heard her joke with her friends that her motto is "I am a lawyer first, and a mother second."
"What the hell did I tell you?" She barks. "If you stay out all night you won't get your beauty sleep." She stops and looks at me with eyes that can burn a hole through glass. "Those dark circles are horrid."
My mother sounds disgusted when she says dark circles, as if I haven't had them my whole life. As if she didn't pass these dark under eyes to me. As if she didn't fix hers with Botox and eye filler. I want to scream at her to go the fuck away and just go back to sleep, but just bite my tongue and get ready for school instead. I was out until 1:30AM last night knowing it was a school night, but when the hottest bar owner in town asks you to perform with your band, you don't say no.
"Last night was amazing," Jamie says as she closes her locker. "I don't think I've seen you smile like that since you discovered that one band last year or should I say guy."
"What guy?" I say shockingly like I don't know what guy she's talking about.
"Tattoos McGee." She can hardly hold back her laugh as she says it. That was the name she dubbed the lead singer and bassist of 22 RATS!, she claims because he is older and tattooed.
"Ew, you make him sound like an old tattooed creeper!" I laugh, but I can see Jamie cringe from the corner of my eye. I know she is thinking of Jordan "Jay" Thomas when I said old tattooed creeper. Jay has been my friend with benefits for the past three and a half years. We met when I was a fourteen year old freshman, at that time he was an eighteen year old and just started his first year in our town's community college.
"Jamie," I sigh, "you don't have to make that face, I know what you think of Jay."
"It's not that I hate him," Jamie starts. "I just think you could do better." I roll my eyes in response but immediately lose focus on what she's saying as Jonah Reyes walks by.
A small whispered "Mhm'' is all I could muster out. We both know I lost focus but she continues on. Jamie thinks I am dissociating, a symptom of my ADHD. Ever since I got diagnosed last year she has been self diagnosing every symptom I ever slightly shown. "You shine so bright, I hate seeing a low life like Jay dull your lig-" Her voice starts to fade out as she notices what I am looking at.
Her voice now a whisper yell "Cameron Lewis?!" I turn to look at her to give her the shut the fuck up eyes, but it was too late, Cameron was already walking towards us.
"Hey! I thought I heard my name and saw your friend looking," He says holding back a smirk. Is he referring to me? I snap back into the conversation. "Ladies can't get enough of here Cam Man."
I know it's a joke but I can't help but cringe at him referring to himself as Cam Man. He doesn't notice . Little does Cam Man and Jamie know, I was not looking at him, I was looking at Jonah. I am still looking at Jonah. Jonah Reyes is the quiet type, he plays bass in our high school's band, he's president of our IT club, and he is Jay's neighbor.
At Wooded Pine High, home of the elite, Jonah and Cameron aren't considered the elite. Elite. One simple word that holds so much weight. I don't like to consider myself elite or even popular, I know that's what all popular people say, but in my eyes I am just truly average. If you asked Cam, he'd say I am a goddess. If you asked Jonah, he would probably call me a bitch.
"Excuse us!" Is all I could get out as I grab Jamie's hand and start walking in the opposite direction. It kind of pisses me off that Jamie could even think I was looking at Cameron Lewis. It wasn't just the fact that Cam was really annoying, or even because he's an underclassmen, but because of his cocky attitude and buck teeth. It also saddens me that in Jamie's mind I couldn't possibly be looking at Jonah.

Thorvaldsdottir, Pärt & Ligeti
A last minute choice after a frustrating workday. Another Julliard concert, this time AXIOM, the new music group conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky and it was free! And pretty well attended -- contemporary music isn't always forbidding, at least in NYC!
Thorvaldsdottir's "Hrim" was first. It was shorter and more 'wispy' than expected. The notes talk about it being inspired by 'dispersion' (in the biological sense). Moments don't bounce around the small ensemble (12 players) or even evolve as much as they slowly creep, with different players taking up the mantle at different times. Very rarely does it feel like everyone is playing. It's appropriately mood setting in a unique way, though I'm unclear about how substantial it is.
And then it was on to the new music 'warhorses' -- Pärt & Ligeti!
Pärt's "Tabula Rasa" -- I wrote down "God, how meditative". With a gentle rocking accompaniment, it's a piece for 2 solo violins, prepared piano and strings. It is simple, trance inducing, hypnotic and beautiful. It feels like a ritual, and yet it's harmonies (his tintinnabulation) feel modern. The first movement feels more vital and outward facing, while the second movement inspires so much contemplation. (I thought of Reneta Adler's memorable 2001 movie review -- "between hypnotic and immensely boring".) But then I rejected that -- it isn't boring, just repetitive. Milarsky 'conducted' several bars of silence before putting down the baton and even then the audience refused to break the silence until a cough started the wave. I own this, but I've never heard it live. Pärt's music (and he's still alive!!) is surprising even now in it's power.
Ligeti's "Violin Concerto" I have heard before (if my memory is correct -- in Carnegie Hall). I remember it before from it's interesting harmonies, it's effective alternate tuning. Here it came out as more of a summation of musical influences combined w/ mourning and a deep wailing pain. It even veered into Black Angel territory with the violinist screaming out in agony at the end of his massive cadenza in the last movement. (I don't remember that at all!) We still get lots of folk influences & harmonies. It doesn't so much tell a story and seem to relieve emotional territory from movement to movement. (How much the heavily biographical notes here are influencing me isn't completely clear, but it's still agonizingly immediate.)
The violinist, Dylan Hamme (a 3rd year Julliard undergraduate!) did it all from memory. His performance and musical presence were incredible! And as expected great conducting from Milarsky and the ensemble members.
8 April 2024, AXIOM, Jeffrey Milarsky conductor, Alice Tully Hall.

Too many cradles, not enough hands
"One hand, too many cradles", a review of 'Mother' directed by Zornitsa Sophia, on the European Film Festival South Africa, 12-22 October 2023.
PLEASE don’t leave me. Jomo, one of the children of Kibera, with Elena, the central protagonist of Zornitsa Sophia’s film Mother, which features on this year’s European Film Festival South Africa.
