Wyoming?
I watched it twice on two different planes recently. It’s worth a reconsideration damn near every day in the United States.
“The guy who kills me, I hope he does it because he hates my guts, not because it’s his job.”
“You’re dying. Do you know that you say that to me every day of your life? You’re not dying, you’re killing the people around you, is what you’re doing.”
Just like us: they’re doomed, and they know it.
The body is the temple of the LORD.
“When I get it, you’ll get it. That’s all.”
They’re my girls! I’m going back in there! –Girls! I was interviewed!
“What about non-union occupations?” They always ask.
“What’s wrong with this guy? What do you make a week? You ever been to prison? No? Well, let’s talk about something you know about: how much you make a week?”
I’m willing to assert that most people who watch DOG DAY AFTERNOON, Americans anyway, miss the point.
Five minutes. Quit while you’re ahead.
Manic, Sonny answers the phone, saying, “WNEW, plays all the hits.” He then threatens to start throwing bodies out the bank’s front door. Confused and threatened is how he got here, and it’s how he’ll leave. Of course, his partner in the robbery, Sal, is all the way in on this because he doesn’t have any plans, any future, any remorse, and he doesn’t know where Wyoming is. “You could just…go ahead and cook whatever’s there.” We’re all trying. In over our heads, the plans have to shift. Police don’t like it in the papers, but they somehow always end up there anyway. Attica! An isolated incident, obviously. Sal is ready, but he isn’t. Sonny spins the chair, which falls: equal parts unexpected and anticipated. Desperation makes the most of us – we call that innovation, for some reason lost on everybody after electricity.
We make the demands. They’re gonna give us anything we want.
His wife wants/NEEDS to be a woman.
This death business: it’s too much.
Sonny’s mom shows up: how beautiful you were when you were a baby.
“You tell me you got nothing but women, and you throw out a girl! A guy!”
You needed money; I got you money. That’s it.
Til we are joined in the hereafter.
It’s perfect, isn’t it? The cry for help is taken as an unnecessarily dramatic display. We’re all here.

One week later and it's time for a rewatch of the classic from 1⃣9⃣7⃣4⃣, #TheGodfatherPartII by #FrancisFordCoppola. Probably one of the earliest instances that a sequel is good and compares well with the first in the series. So good that it won Best Picture at the Oscars and Coppola won Best Director. Of course, the addition of #RobertDeNiro as young Vito Corleone was a factor, hence winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. EL DOCUMENTAL
Salud, dinero y amor. Esa trivialidad tan manida estuvo muy cerca de obtenerla un actor que, aunque hoy olvidado, tiene en su haber un récord: intervenir solo en 5 películas (¿o fueron 6?) y que todas ellas fuesen obras maestras. Esta es la contradictoria y triste historia de John Cazale.
Y es que tener una carrera profesional en tan pocas películas, todas ellas candidatas al premio Oscar, catalogadas posteriormente por la crítica como obras maestras de la cinematografía, y tener por compañera sentimental a Meryl Streep podría ser el paradigma del éxito profesional y personal. Pues todo eso lo truncó un cáncer de pulmón a los 42 años. Estamos hablando del secundario posiblemente más reconocido de la historia del cine.
John Cazale nació en Boston en 1935. Se inició en el teatro, hizo una gran amistad con Al Pacino y a través de él le llegó la gran oportunidad de debutar en el cine. En el teatro intervinieron ambos en obras de Israel Horovitz y recibieron varios premios. En una de estas obras lo descubrió el director de casting de El Padrino que lo recomendó a Coppola y de ahí paso a ser Fredo en la primera entrega de la saga.
La vida de Cazale estuvo siempre ligada a un trio excepcional del teatro y cine norteamericano: Al Pacino, Robert de Niro y Meryl Streep. Su relación con Pacino fue de amistad, De Niro fue otro amigo que se responsabilizó de él – de su salud – cuando vinieron los tiempos difíciles y Meryl Streep fue el gran amor de su vida. Cazale fue un bon vivant, fumador empedernido, bebedor incansable y al parecer con una actividad donjuanesca que no iba en consonancia con su físico.
Así pues, ya con 37 años debuta en el cine con EL PADRINO de Francis Ford Coppola. Dos años después en 1974 interviene en LA CONVERSACION también bajo la dirección de Coppola. Ese mismo año también actúa en EL PADRINO II siempre con Coppola. En 1975 aparece en TARDE DE PERROS de Sidney Lumet y en 1978 en EL CAZADOR de Michael Cimino. Es decir, en escasos 6 años interviene en 5 películas candidatas al Oscar y que con los años la crítica las ha reconocido como obras maestras del cine. ¿Se le puede pedir más a una incipiente carrera profesional? Pues lo único que le podría haber pedido es salud y es que poco antes del inicio del rodaje de El Cazador se le diagnosticó un cáncer de pulmón. La productora no quería iniciar el rodaje con él y fue Robert de Niro el que se hizo cargo del seguro de Cazale. El plan de rodaje se hizo planificando primero los planos en que aparecía Cazale y él dio todo lo que pudo de sí a pesar de la enfermedad, pero desgraciadamente, no pudo llegar a ver el estreno de la gran película de Cimino, ya que falleció en Marzo de 1978 al os 42 años.
Un documental con el título Descubriendo a John Cazale nos acercó a la vida, al éxito y a la tragedia de este actor carismático del que entre otros hablaron:
-Al Pacino: “Todo lo que yo quería hacer era trabajar con John por el resto de mi vida. Él era mi compañero de actuación”
- Meryl Streep: “Era distinto. No he conocido a nadie como él. Destacaba su singularidad, su humanidad y la curiosidad que le despertaba a la gente. Era compasivo”.
-Israel Horovitz en un artículo para su funeral: “John Cazale sucede una sola vez en la vida. Fue un invento, una pequeña perfección. Con razón sus amigos sienten tal indignación al despertar y descubrir que Cazale duerme con reyes y consejeros, con Booth y Kean, con Jimmy Dean, con Bernhardt, Guitry y Duse, con Stanislavsky, con Groucho, Benny y Allen. Hará amigos rápidamente en su nuevo lugar. Él es fácil de amar”.
John Cazale recibió todo el apoyo de sus amigos en los últimos meses de su vida, especialmente de su compañera sentimental Meryl Streep quien no se separó en ningún momento de él hasta su muerte, poco antes del estreno de El Cazador.
Pero como preguntábamos inicialmente ¿John Cazale actuó en 5 o en 6 películas? Pues en un sentido estricto podemos decir que fueron 6, pues 12 años después de su muerte en EL PADRINO III, Francis Ford Coppola tiró de imágenes de archivo e introdujo a su personaje en la película. Un bonito homenaje para poner punto y final a su carrera.
