i can’t believe this isn’t immediately apparent from my writing but my deathly serious tsh character ranking list goes like this

also re papenathy as a rule of thumb whatever my #1 ship is usually includes my top 2 characters from a medium. i would never pair a flop with one of my faves*

*in tartt universe all characters are on the flop-menace spectrum but that’s why the pairings work internally

i was about to hit post when i realised you also asked why. ive already made multiple posts analysing the tsh charas or their relationships which i feel gets into the meat of it anyway so please peruse those tags for longer explanations but as a quick breakdown of my takes:

judy: i just find her so funny and refreshing throughout the whole book; she serves a great meta purpose in breaking the illusion of richard’s trustworthiness as a narrator; she’s actually one of the nicer people we meet relative to all the other assholes in richard’s life; her scenes speak to both her commonalities and differences with richard and i enjoy them a lot. also i love that she’s based on a real person who then did costuming for succession.

francis: do i even need to explain this… hes an icon. i love all the layers to francis (which we only even get to see bc him & richard are so #real worsties)- how he’s so dramatic and emotive but can compose himself at will, how hes both confrontational and cowardly, his random kindnesses and mean quips, his completely fucked sense of priorities at all times…. also his insane childhood & his self-made tragedy in the epilogues. enfant terrible!

i do also love richard for all that he’s a nightmare. hes suuuuuch a mess wrapped within an I Am Normal package #tarttcore. love the way he teeters between reckless self-destruction and “umm you guys are weird” judgment. his self-censorship and revisionist tendencies as a narrator. his outsider role and his actual desperate liking of his murderous rich friends who do not particularly care about him. hes literally 19…. he should have been in the club….

henry & camilla are both interesting but henry is like The Statue and camilla is The Shadow in the sense that theyre both not fully realised ppl bc of richard’s pov/pedestal. henry is kind of the mvp of tsh of course, greattttt lines, compelling character, drives the action, but ultimately hard to crack as a complete person and full of hubris that annoys me. i respect that he gave us hot takes and drama the whole way through. camilla i enjoy the pieces of- beef with judy, french post murder fever, mysterious phone calls, entanglements- but lbr she is the least characterised individual in the book and thus hard to connect to outside of fanon. i still like her tho i esp enjoy how unbothered she is living her own side stories. and i just know she suffered incalculable martyrdom running amongst those men.

charles is more of a real person to richard than the above and he compels me also. such a jarring (if telegraphed) shift from part i to part ii. in a way his descent into darkness humanises him the most bc at least hes torn up about the whole murder business in the first place! but by god his relationships are fucked.

bunny is at best funny. but hes just like. a conservative asshole whos not even smart enough for the course he nepo-babied his way into. and then julian has fun literature class bits and is admittedly also funny (he is so not willing to get dragged into the drama it’s comical) but is just a nefarious elitist weirdo. they get nothing from me.

I personally love to imagine a case of judy proovey falls madly in love (either doomed or absolutely perfect) with a lovely gentlemen and they instantly get engaged - basically I want Richard as hen best man and all of the shenanigans that that implies - he has to bring Francis to the wedding and socialise with all of her gay 'friends'

no im obsessed with this concept….. 50/50 the guy is super perfect for her or it’s like clearly a divorce waiting to happen and judy’s just kind of delusional but either way the wedding antics would be top-tier

neither richard Nor francis want to attend, because like. why would they.

judy makes a point of calling richard to ask tho and hes like. kind of morally obliged to accept. richard is kind of iffy on if he even wants to bring a plus one, so francis almost manages to stay behind, except francis is deeply suspicious of judy/california somehow managing to lure richard back permanently so he resigns himself to coming with in a fit of neuroses. idk that judy would go for best man necessarily but she 1) really likes richard (with a level of like maternal fondness now that hes forged himself such a weird life as a loner runaway auteur homosexual) and 2) thinks theyre a cool couple to have around for clout at her wedding so shes def insistent that he be there.

the whole thing is naturally super LA and over the top & like. very tacky to francis and richard but objectively not that insane. massive venue & b-list musical performer, probably a very glam Theme. judy has a very nineties silk wedding gown with Shoulders and a very fitted bodice & then a cindy crawford slip dress for the reception. the first dance is to kiss from a rose. it’s a summer wedding. francis hates everything abt it but he also occasionally comments that priscilla’s ideas for Their wedding were somehow worse.

as above the groom is either like. weirdly nice and charming or an extremely hollywood guy who is already fighting with judy over wedding minutiae before the ceremony begins. either way richard and francis probably dont like him. but in the former event only francis is like Ugh tacky heterosexuals whereas in the latter they Both are (to richard’s mild chagrin). if the groom IS an asshole they have a better time with him bc they both enjoy it when the other person is a bitch to people they don’t like.

as for the guy in both cases he finds them kind of weird but is mostly polite about it. the way judy talks about it has him under the very dubious impression that richard is her ex and francis is his subsequent partner so it’s like. “you dated THIS guy?” vibes. altho richard can be faux smooth/normal so its not even that he makes a bad impression necessarily he and judy just seem…unlikely. especially in contrasting judy and francis as apparent choices. richard does not know about this false assumption but is made uncomfortable by the vibe. judy totally knows though.

for both of them the event is giving bunny memorial weekend vibes. in fact they both bring this up on separate occasions. ‘at least this time there’s an open bar.’ ‘and no police investigation.’ ‘and we’re not sharing a room with corcoran spawn.’ also francis still clings and bitches the whole time except now he does so physically with fingers digging into richard where he’s hooked arms with him so he can’t shake him and leave him at the mercy of the other invitees, who are overall nosy and chatty and inebriated. which is fair bc as soon as some tv reality people started asking them about their zodiac compatibility or whatever richard would have immediately ditched him to “talk to judy” (who is doing a line somewhere to keep her energy levels up- “because weddings are fucking exhausting, richard, i am so not doing this again”).

they don’t actually see much of judy bc shes understandably busy but before the wedding starts she finds richard while she’s half-changed and he gives her a cigarette and an awkwardly supportive pep talk. judy gets kind of weepy about it. richard has a weird realisation that now that francis is his whatever and the twins remain MIA judy is like his closest friend. after the wedding she corners them on the dance floor to try and force them to dance with her and/or each other to, like, abba’s biggest hits of the decade.

judy’s Gay Friends are also in attendance and at some point when richard is talking to some of his hampden girlfriends he hasnt seen in years francis is forced to interact with them and nearly dies doing so. when he finds richard again he violently downs richards drink and stares mutely and shakily at him until richard hauls them outside and hands him a pack of cigarettes that he can chainsmoke. after this shock to the system they start just bitching horribly about them to each other & begin to enjoy themselves. most of the event is made tolerable by their mutual appreciation of each other’s biting commentary and shared ongoing need to drink. the gay friends all semi-deservedly loathe them by the end of the night.

judy does actually manage to dance w them for a bit and then somehow it’s francis she properly wrangles off to the dancefloor bc francis Can dance even if its just like. ballroom. theyre kind of poorly suited bc judys more of the cyndi lauper or madonna school of dancing but she really just wants him to play mysterious gay arm-candy while she swooshes past her tv rival melinda (who shows up with judy’s ex as a date, that bitch). francis obliges by looking particularly disdainful as they pass by. they have a weird conversation wherein judy tells him she doesn’t mind him actually now that she knows he was just jealous back in the day (francis takes offense to this character assassination but is unable to say he actually just found it grating that she was present when he was trying to discuss a murder he committed) & also that he should listen to whitney and dance w richard bc deep down everyone wants 2 dance with somebody who loves them. francis deflects but is mildly flattered by her insistence that richard is So Totally into him that way and has Obviously been forever so he tells her in a moment of grace that she looks nice as if this is a dramatic revelation. judy takes this with good grace.

richard is very aware that whatever is being discussed is probably not good for his pride and hes correct. ‘you really should dance, though. it’s a wedding. or does he not dance or something?’ ‘not properly. i tried to teach him once but we didn’t get very far.’ ‘bad dancer?’ (this is judy, in loyally doubtful tones.) passive headshake. ‘no, he got distracted dancing lead. probably because i was dancing the woman’s part.’ indiscrete look towards richard. ‘huh. i thought, like, the thing was that no one was the girl..?’ ‘hm. richard is very sexually confused.’ ‘sure, i get it. mike is into weird stuff too. like, you know those fluffy handcuffs?’

by the end of it francis and richard spend their time getting really drunk and making out in the rose maze or whatever exterior greenery is there. but the music filters through so they do almost dance to whitney when the fifth whitney song plays, if you count swaying to music when sort of touching as dancing. only judy poovey’s wedding could orchestrate this kind of wholesome moment between horrible people. romance <3

my tsh crackship that i take seriously? judy x camilla enemies to girls who still can’t stand each other but are also desperately attracted to each other somehow. judy drives camilla up a wall on purpose by being like ‘yk what girlie we’re not so different actually 💘’ and camilla contemplates adding a body to her count. judy buys boxed rosé for whenever camilla comes over just to see her die inside.

i think she and francis would somehow kind of get along if they were introduced properly bc she loves to spill drama and francis loves to be told secrets. like theyd both find each other kind of insufferable in a patronizing way but they’d hang out. richard would not enjoy this.

i think she’s actually very pretty in a super current 80s-90s bombshell way and richard’s internalized califorphobia is just too strong to register it 💔

in my zombie apocalypse au she survives the initial massacre bc she is so intensely coked up she beats the shit out of like 20 zombies and then drives out of there in her corvette without a scratch on her.

That children ask was so compelling cos now I want late age surprise baby Judy provvey to make Richard the godfather (much to his dismay) - maybe she can move near them or he is forced once a year to babysit when she drops the child off with him for One night and One day while she goes to the spa, baby, child and then teenage shenanigans. Francis escapes most year but one year when the child is 8 he has broken his leg doing smth stupid and tries to interlectualise with a child that only consumes Ben 10

listen the idea of richard or francis interacting with not just a child but JUDY’s rich-LA-raised child…. in the 00s no less……

judy is always thirty flirty and thriving in spirit if not in age, thank you so much for asking.

judy trivia from the epilogues:

would never get got for tax evasion thanks to her clichéd seedy LA lawyers, but even if she did have to weather some kind of scandal she would do so à la brooke in legally blonde and emerge on the other side with a lucrative book deal to capitalise on the drama.

she keeps in touch with some of her hampden friends altho a lot of them are east coasters- whenever there’s some kind of reunion she loves showing up to show off. does not care if people look down on her tv show fame. does care if people bring up her rival shows and that bitch melinda (who is totally a scientologist). mostly hangs w a variety of LA people that she’s actually friends with despite a wide range of frenemies she sees regularly.

manages to steer clear of every weird 90s hollywood cult despite her trend-following because she doesn’t like bossy people and she finds the initiation schtick boring. is very blasé about this.

on a similar note has religiously followed every trendy diet there is but also kind of ignores the parts she finds unacceptable like not drinking or giving up chocolate. way ahead of the smoothie craze.

has a string of random exes across the years which range from guys obsessed with her that she dumped to guys she was really into who dumped her. currently in her “living for myself” era (again). seeing richard again had her thinking about it but weirdly after whatever went down there she’s had a sort of zen epiphany that maybe she’s okay with entering her thirties an unmarried girlboss. your longtime crush helping his depressed homosexual friend leave his bride at the altar and then mysteriously moving in with him in a different country months later is apparently a real eye-opener to the different paths people can lead in life.

i think judy certainly has the potential to be bi but it’s also very appealing to me if she’s very straight by contrast to richard’s flagrant repression. so “has gay friends” in la but they’re mostly #gay best friends who hang around her for clout and whatnot ergo richard’s deal is very exciting / intriguing to her. when they do manage to meet in toronto for her book signing she’s extremely open about this. richard is mortified. francis refuses to attend on principle not knowing this will one day lead judy to come to montreal instead just to see the two of them as a surprise. on a sidenote goes from passively pro lgbt to staunch lgbt defender who makes this her cause du jour. think invasive/tactless but aggressively supportive. she has drag queens on her show. she does fundraisers. it’s a great career move for her.

despite the tactlessness and insider knowledge does not say a word about richard x francis to anyone. she may be a gossip but she also delights in keeping juicy secrets & beyond that she’s a good friend. anyways no one she knows really knows either of them enough to care. on the other hand will not hesitate to bring up that she knew the dead guys from hampden as soon as richard’s book makes the topic resurface. will make bunny sound like her dead bff, but will not extend this post-mortem closeness to henry winters, who was “very fucking creepy, to tell you the truth”.

considered having a purse dog but thought it’d be too much of a hassle. instead she has a weird pet like a snake or a turtle that she treats like a puppy.

die-hard lady di stan, devastated when she dies. also cannot understand that her gay bestie richard could not care less about this.
