I'm posting this because i havent seen anything about this on tumblr yet.
Memphis police murdered another black man, on Jan 7 2023. His name was Tyre Nichols. Police have not released the body cam footage, but it's apparently really REALLY bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Between the murder of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, and the murder of Forest Defender Tortuguita in Atlanta, things are about to get REALLY hot in the south.
The continuing brutality and extrajudicial execution at the hands of police NEEDS to stop by any means necessary.
Tortuguita's comrades have called for tonight, January 20, 2023, to be a "Night of Rage" to commemmorate, and retaliate, for Tortuguita's murder.
Now is the time to talk to your comrades and those you trust in order to make precautions and contingency plans for each others safety if you have not done so already.
Stay safe comrades.
Black Lives Matter.
Justice for Tyre Nichols.
Justice for Tortuguita.
No Justice, No Peace.

as a scandinavian person i feel i need to speak up in cases of american police violence (like the particularly brutal one that just happened with tyre nichols) to say: it is not enough to just transition to a scandinavian model of less violent policing. that's a good start and you should absolutely push for cops to be properly trained in de-escalation and to be psychologically prepped so they don't see every person as a threat just for existing while black, but its not enough. police here are less violent, but they are still racist. they exist as the protectors of the rich - of property, of unjust laws, of the status quo.
none of this is to discourage you from activism in the service of smaller steps. those are important. i've been to america. while i am white (and so my experience will never come close), i still experienced a marked difference of a more hostile police that felt frightening to approach or interact with, who always seemed on edge and ready to do violence if provoked. just their increased presence, increased militarization and fundamentally different mindset are problematic cultural differences. that culture should be changed as soon as possible. things like "warrior training" should be banned outright, you should need a 3-year degree at least, with mandatory classes on the social causes of crime, socioeconomic inequality, police violence & power inequality, de-escalation, preventative measures, etc. those are all mandatory classes here and its the bare minimum.

I did not even have to look at the article to know that the cop who was given preferential treatment (relieved of duty instead of being fired) was white. Because OF FUCKING COURSE HE IS.
Even with the eyes of the world on them, cops can’t stop being cops.

Stickers in Salem, Oregon in memory of Tyre Nichols and Manuel Teran aka Tortuguita.
Nichols was a 29-year-old man who died on January 10 of his injuries, 3 days after being viciously beaten by five Memphis cops following a traffic stop.
Tortuguita was a 26-year-old Atlanta Forest defender who was shot and killed by cops last week.

I know they released the bodycam footage of Tyre Nichols and I just want everyone to protect their mental health and also if you're living in any southern states (Mostly Tennessee and Georgia) please be safe. Some states have declared prematurely to be in emergency because they are expecting rioting. Unfortunately another young black man has been murdered at the hands of the police. Y'all stay safe please.
I wasn't going to post about this on my tumblr because tumblr is my safe space.

Its unfair what has to happen right now. For Trye, for his family, for the black communuty, for the city of memphis. But it is for the best that the police officers were prosecuted as fast as they were. Like a part of me feels like it was partially because they were all black, but at least we know it can be handled well.
May Tyre rest in peace and do some sick ass skate tricks in the afterlife

Warning: Strong Opinion, but I only LOOK young, I'm 42 years old and my first march was across Brooklyn Bridge for Abner Louima, a victim of Police BRUTALITY in 1997.
Tumblr media
Police'll kill another black person this year, either a "whoops, I thought it was my taser/accident" or a very clear intentional act of cold-blooded and brutal lack of humanity murder. Both will be caught on film. It'll be clear as day & broadcasted ad nauseum.
Tumblr media
The supposed infraction will be minuscule. A broken taillight, jaywalking, a wallet mistaken for a gun, expired registration tags, breathing the wrong way, etc. Won't matter, a vicious death'll be the sentence.
We'll march. We'll protest. We'll mourn.  Some may even riot out of pain and frustration.
Aaaaaand, it'll happen again. The annual sick American Ritual of Black Bodies sacrificed will be on full display in the media as a warning to black people and people of color in this country that at any given moment, should the protectors of the ruling class deem it, your life could be forfeit. It's fascist fearmongering from the service that we pay taxes for to protect and serve us. Murderers in uniform get off with a wrist-slap unless they too, are people of color, then justice is swiftly & severely metered out. We internally know they aren't here to protect, nor serve US.The sick joke wrote itself. But we'll march. Our "leaders" will encourage us to.
Tumblr media
Martin marched, it ended poorly for him.
Tumblr media
Actually, it ended poorly for most civil rights leaders.
But we'll do it. Nothing will change. Kumbyah's will be sung. We'll go home, watch our Sports and HBO shows and forget til the next dark sacrifice for public consumption goes viral. But forgetting isn't bad, it's a coping mechanism for knowing that agency over your own corporeal self is an illusion as is your safety if you are black or brown in America. They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. But we'll march & protest again, won't we? "But- but- we shouldn't lie down and DO NOTHING! Something should be done! and Said!" Yes. Yes, something SHOULD be done and said. However, the onus for action is not on black or brown bodies. It's clear we are not heard NOR respected. History has shown almost all of our civil unrests have been met with more violence. These actions of public unrest and outrage by black and brown people end up being performative mostly despite the best intentions because we do not have enough leverage, political power, wealth, and or influence to make a lasting change or instill fear of consequence or retribution. The hashtags, t-shirts, murals, and posters get made and rallied behind and then forgotten until the next public lynching.
Tumblr media
It's a story as old as time. If you are not black or brown and do not condone The Annual Negro Culling Ritual, then the burden of responsibility lies squarely on your shoulders as an "ALLY" to put all your resources, your voice and your body on the line if you have had enough. Come up with ACTIONABLE ITEMS that your leverage, political power, wealth, and or influence will make lasting change.
Until I can see the impact of that, count me absent from the triggering superfluous displays of solidarity, I can stomach it no longer. My black time will be spent preserving my finite energy toward my black life's betterment. It is inhumane to force me to look at my slain brothers & sisters & relive their tragedies for platitudes that have no real-world results while I wonder.. "Am I next? Will I make it home to the people who love me?"

Just saw the video of Tyre Nichols, and I am very sick rn. A “diverse police department” does not fend against systemic racism.

If you ever come across the intense and traumatising video of Mr. Tyre Nichols being murdered by the police in Memphis, Tennessee, DON’T. It’s too violent and bloody! He was murdered senselessly by 5 police officers whom were black (most likely the police force from there ingrained those 5 officers with their toxic police culture)…and all 5 are charged with the young gent’s murder.
Tumblr media
My heart breaks for the young man’s mother and ‘is family; he was a brother and a 29 year old father to a little boy; he was an avid skateboarder and photographer. His mother will never get to hold him. Instead, she has to lay her son to rest on Wednesday. Justice for every single black person whom the police murdered, and Tyre Nichols should have been alive. Enough is enough!
