Summary: Personally, Kaito would rather not get into his tragic backstory with his favourite detective, but involuntary physical transformations had an unfortunate way of forcing one's hand.

Kaito's earliest memories were of the Empty.

His parents always used to laugh when he called it that.

"It wasn't empty," his dad had promised him once. "Your fear just made it seem that way. The mind can fool you into believing the illusions you perceive are actually reality." With a quick flick of his wrist, the full fan of cards in his hands had vanished, revealing the secretive smile he was wearing. "That's what magicians count on."

"Really, Kai-chan!" his mother had chided, during a face-off when Kaito had flat out refused to enter the kitchen because she'd made baked trout for dinner. "It's just your memory playing tricks on you!"

They were right, of course. Kaito's fears were just the leftover trauma from a harrowing childhood experience. He'd done his research; he knew the Empty was anything but.

That didn't stop him from waking up in a cold sweat nearly as often as not, the phantom echo of vast nothingness pressing in on all sides and driving him from his bed to cower in the bathtub. Nor did it keep his heart from trying to beat right out of his chest whenever he was confronted by... things that reminded him of that time in his life.

The Empty was not empty. But it was still cold. Dark. Endless. Terrifying.

And far away, Kaito always reminded himself sternly.

I just prefer to stay up late and sleep in.” “This isn’t ‘late’ though,” Kaito mumbled. “This is morning.” “Then go to sleep,” Shinichi laughed. “’kay.” Kaito melted into a puddle across Shinichi’s lap, fully horizontal now, and stretched like a cat before going boneless. “I didn’t mean on me!” “If I get up, the sleepy will get away.” Shinichi snorted. “Would you like me to carry you, KID-sama?”

Wilting Beauty, Blooming Nightshade: Chps 7/7. 22k words. KaiShin. Hanahaki AU! Kaito has been pining for nearly 5 years now, as the flowers he coughs out reminds him. Caught in a murder mystery on a cruise liner, he has (probably) his last chance to confess his feelings. (Written for the KaiShin Reverse Bang 2022.)

Silver Bullet: Chps 3/3. 7k words. Vermouth, on meeting the two most important people of her life.

Kindly Cruel: Chp 1/1. 2k words. KaiShin. Detectives are like sharks in the ocean, ruthless hunters after blood, and Shinichi especially so.

Kaishin being cousins is so fucking funny to me because it means Yusaku and Toichi really decided to just never let anyone know they were related??? Also Yusaku and Yukiko and Chikage are all contenders for worst Uncle/Aunt awards for never checking on their nephews after emotionally devastating events.

Shinichi was distantly aware that he'd stumbled to a halt at the mouth of an alleyway, careless of the rain pounding heavily around him. The splashing footfalls of the man he'd been chasing continued on without him, vanishing into the night, but Shinichi was frozen, unable to move.

"KID?" he demanded, breathless and horrified.

"Ah, Tantei-kun," KID said, with an attempt at his usual urbane smoothness that didn't even come close to disguising the tremble in his voice. "I'm afraid you've caught me at rather a bad time."

What happened to you? Shinichi would have demanded, except he didn't need to ask.

He knew all too well.

Cornered in an underground Organization research facility, Kaito and Shinichi have to find a way to make it out with their lives – even if that means abandoning their mission and letting this group escape justice forever.

“Shit,” KID hissed, muffled through his mask. He sounded particularly dire and Shinichi knew why. They were outnumbered, drastically low on supplies, and there was no guarantee they’d stumble across a way out any time soon.

His hand went to the ball belt even as they kept moving. He turned the dial, queuing up the firework ball. “Feel like taking a chance?”

To appease my frothing rage and remind myself why I love the ship, I would like to offer you and the lovelies a few of my very favorite KaiShin fanfic recs. My personal favorites on AO3 are "A study in scarlet" by kittebasu (casefic + character study), "Dominoes" by scratchienails (superhero au), "The suffering of fools" by Angelicsentinel (what happenes in Vegas), and on ff.net "(Not) Supernatural" by cursed detective (fake supernatural shenanigans). All of them are fantastic, though they can be kind of heavy, and I reread them frequently! (Not) has shinichi somewhere on the ace spectrum, though I don't think the author ever explicitly states that, and is a bit more humorous than the others if someone wants a slightly lighter hearted take. If anyone is interested and feeling as inclined to ignore stupidity as I am, please give them a try!
