Worth It

The matriarch stood beautifully on her balcony, a cigarette holder in hand. Taking a long drag from the holder, she closed her eyes and let the sting flow down her throat. Thank the gods’ Rhea was around to keep her mind at bay, she would have locked herself inside her chambers if she had to survive the day.

It was Alcina’s birthday but the woman specifically said to not celebrate. But, Rhea still wanted to even after what happened the past year. She cherished Alcina and the date of her birth should be welcomed with an extravagant party. As a thank you for bringing the matriarch into her life all those years ago. But, she honored the woman’s wishes.

Anything for her love’s happiness, after all.

“Hey,” Rhea smiled as she joined the matriarch on the balcony gently waving the bottle and wine glasses in her hands. “I thought you might want to drink."

“I always drink.”

“Well, today is quite different,” Rhea said pouring them both a glass and placing the bottle on the banister. “I hope you don’t mind I still do want to celebrate today. Just the two of us.”

Rhea gave the glass to the Countess who immediately downed the drink in one gulp.

“Better?”

“Yes, thank you,” Alcina turned and smiled at her lover.

The goddess poured Alcina another glass before resting her head on the woman’s shoulder. The silence was comforting, a solace in the otherwise rambunctious halls of the castle, courtesy of their lovely daughters, of course. So there they stayed in the balcony comfortable even in the coldness of the night but nothing a hearth, blankets, and the sofa from the fireplace dragged into the balcony couldn’t alleviate.

Alcina loved celebrating her birthday but this year was much too different.

“They will be jealous you know,” Alcina chuckled at Rhea’s words. “The girls will hate it I get to spend your birthday with you.”

“They spent every single one with me ever since they awoke, you’re barely robbing them of anything,” Alcina rolled her eyes. “Besides, I want to spend it with you anyway.”

Rhea smiled and kissed the top of the woman’s forehead.

“So you won’t have a problem celebrating next year?”

“I don’t think I can just yet,” Alcina murmured.

“I hope you’ll love it the way you used to before. The sparkle in your eyes as we waited for the clock to strike 12, I loved seeing your dazzling smile.”

“Well, that was before everything that has happened to us. I’m no longer that woman you used to know,” Alcina gently removed Rhea’s arms from her shoulders and sat down putting her elbows on her knees leaning into the fire. “When one experiences so much heartache, celebrating one’s existence seems too farfetched if you asked me.”

“I still celebrate my birthday even if I don’t count the years anymore,” Rhea offered. “Time is cruel but that doesn’t mean we have to be cruel to ourselves as well. That is why being immortal is depressing, we experience sadness and have a longer time to grieve it. We misuse the infinite duration of our existence worrying of things that are long past.”

“It’s not easy,” Alcina said quietly. “I was the one cradling your lifeless body. It’s not a sight I wish to see anymore. I am grateful to see you alive and breathing in front of me, but it’s not easy to forget the pain and anguish of seeing your brother –”

Rhea quickly pulled the woman into a hug, running her fingers through her curls, and whispering sweet words in her ear to help her calm down. Alcina held onto Rhea for dear life, not wanting to let go afraid that the woman in front of her is a hallucination caused by her grief. Alcina’s whimpers broke Rhea’s heart enough for her to tear up as well.

“It’s not easy, it never will be. I still struggle to remove the mental image of your death from my head,” Rhea leaned back and held the woman’s face in her hands. “But, I see you now and I know that the pain is worth it. You see, regretting something we once cherished only imprisons us, to find peace of mind we must let it all go. Smile because we have done what we did that brought us happiness and learned something when it brought us pain.”

“How did you get over it?”

“I never did, but we can handle it. We can handle anything because we already handled everything.”

The confirmation that Rhea understood made Alcina tear up even more. She is grateful that she can share her pain, which is more than enough to curb her aching heart. Rhea lifted Alcina and let the woman sit on her lap so she could cradle her. They spent the rest of the evening in that position, cradling her love, and humming their lullaby. Alcina was comforted by the action, she felt like a child being put to sleep. Rhea always knew what she needed and Alcina will always be thankful.

The goddess carried her lover so they could lie comfortably on the bed and retire for the night. They held each other as they drifted off to sleep thankful for the physical reminder that the one that they love is indeed right there beside them. Loving them, and giving them everything that they could ask for.

  Grief is the price we pay for love.

Every hello comes with the knowledge that one day there will be a goodbye. Every first kiss comes with a certainty that there will one day be a last.

And even though we know all love ends in sorrow…

Even though we know that price…

  We pay it,

We pay it again,

And again,

And again…

Because it makes life worth living.

Because love…

  Love is always worth it.
