But wait,I have more! So I was still thinking about the new Niji album but specifically about how unusual it is for them to be releasing the outfit voting already but NOT the song previews yet - so this had my brain turning a bit and made me think maybe these outfits are hints about what the songs will sound like,basically this is me predicting what they’ll sound like just based on that :] (once again this post will most likely be very long and for that I will say again,I am so sorry I just have a A Lot of thoughts about Nijigaku finally having a new album)
Ayumu - Sound wise it could really go either way,but one thing I do know is that it will be about Yuu. Like the theme is LOVE SONGS,you really think this girl isn’t going to sing about how she’s madly in love with her childhood friend?? In my mind - Spring-Colored Blazer will mean it’s about her love and appreciation for Yuu,Mystery Brown is like “I can’t figure out how my childhood friend feels about me it’s a mysteryyyy” or something and Tri-Color Stripe…idk maybe it’s her confessing to Yuu and wanting to be bold about it that’s all I got for that one
Kasumi - I’ve said this many times already,but Kasumi’s outfits have me the most split on what her song will sound like bc Retro Orange may mean that it’ll be a fun du-wop style retro song maybe about wanting someone to be more bold and say how they feel or smth,but Elegant White might mean it’ll be a regal piano ballad about her pining over a crush…and then all Black Jewelery could mean to me is that Kasumin is in her black swan era which honestly? I’m about it that would be fun,like throw in her twirling / doing some ballet moves and references to Swan Lake and I’d be EXTRA sold
Shizuku - If we’re judging from all of her outfits,it’s very clear that they’re going for a cuter concept for Shizuku which is something that I’ve wanted for a bit - like yes,I love all of her solos so far but this is very refreshing maybe Pink Frill Dress may mean it’ll be a pop song with a few samples from classic piano pieces a la Feel My Rhythm and references to Cinderella,OR Cherry Cherry might mean she will be the one with the retro song…as for Pastel Lolita I have no idea,nothing is coming to mind if they’re feeling funky maybe like denpa?? Probably not cndjdj
Karin - JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ,it’s all I want from her!! And not like upbeat jazz like maybe Nonfiction or Fashionista,like a slow smooth type of jazz…to me that would suit Karin and Miyutan so well,idk why they haven’t done it already but any of these outfits could fit that concept especially Blue Moon Night and Amethyst Dress
Ai - From what I can tell,we could be seeing a softer sweeter side to Ai compared to her usual sound,which is just H-AI AI’M AI LET’S SMILE TODAY YAYAYAYAY WHOAWHOAWHOAWHOA ALRIIIIGHT (except for Diabolic muiler of course),and that’s great but I think we’ve been long overdue for a slower,softer pop song for Ai and to me Coral One-Piece or Lavender Lace suit that the most (idk about Striped Romance fitting that,it’s nice but it’s BRIGHT in comparison)
Kanata - If we go off of just Black Ribbon,we may be getting kind of a jirai kei sound which…I’m not sure what that is,maybe straying away from her usual lullaby-ish sound and moving close to dream pop?? Is that the same thing again idk what jirai kei music sounds like but Purple Fairy may mean it’ll have a fantasy theme and be more upbeat for her (if that is the case and it wins please give her elf ears or elf ear jewelry trust me on this it would be SO cute) - while Luxury Cardigan…again,idk it’s not my fave mostly bc it’s a little plainer than the other two
Setsuna - POWER BALLAD!! All of Setsuna’s songs are so upbeat and mostly just pop rock,let her sing a slower song for once if she wears School Rock specifically but maybe she’ll get a more pop punk type song w/ Punk Border or Little Devil :0c which would also be fun idk just a different rock style would be fun for her (also this will be Hayamaru’s first recorded solo which has me like 👀👀 extra excited)
Emma - Ok so it could go one of two ways for me,Colorful Stage could mean we’ll get a fun happy pop song from her which would be fine but if Denim Stitch or Fluffy Chiffon win…hear me out we get a folk / country song and honestly?? I’d be okay with either (got the idea from realizing that Denim Stitch kinda looks like a cowgirl outfit and like tell me I’m wrong you can’t dhdhdj)
Rina - Tsunagaru Connect gets close,but I think Neon Cat specifically could fit a hyperpop song or even kawaii bass which would still be in Rina’s range but still different for it to be fun - Motion Girl could fit more of like a synthy bubblegum pop song where she’s like “cheering on” her crush and telling them (…if it were up to me that would be Mia) how she feels maybe?? Lemon Soda could probably fit either concepts
Shioriko - SPOOKY PIANO SONG!! Like,,why would they give her two outfits themed after ghosts / the undead and then not give her a song like that?? Let Shioko have her spooky Halloween-y song bc it would be funny to have everyone else have regular love songs then you get to hers and it’s just like *DRAMATIC ORGAN PLAYING* - Mint Sailor feels weirdly out of place in this case,bc idk if that outfit would fit that specific concept but I’m sure something could work
Mia - …with outfits like hers my first thought was “just give her a High School Musical type song” and that’s all I’ll say on hers fjdjdj
Lanzhu - If we get hyperpop with Rina,we might get some kind of funky kawaii bass with Lanzhu like yes her previous solos are great obviously but with outfits like Vivid Fur,Street Dancer and ESPECIALLY Pinky Gal that’s the vibe I get from them plus it’d be a nice change up for her
(As usual,I’m aware that there’s a large chance I will be wrong and this is just me guessing wildly bc we don’t have song previews yet BUT again we’ll see :0c they’ll likely be good regardless)

Tri-Arame Side Story - What Hurts More?
Primary Pairing: N/A Starring: Scythryn, Quentin, Index Secondary Pairing: ShizuKasu Words: 630 Rating: T Fandom: Love Live Nijigasaki, D&D Time Frame: D&D, ??? / Niji, sometime during their 3rd year of HS Prompt: Memory Content Warning: mild reference to battle and other fantasy stuff
---------
Author's Note: Bonus 3rd entry for the 4th.
Also, Scythryn is the callsign used by Anita, Executor is used by Quentin, and nobody in this chapter knows Index's given name.
Summary: Shizuku writes some character stuff for the D&D world she and Setsuna created
---------
“Mama…” The girl whimpered.
The child clutched her favorite stuffed animal as she searched the area.
“Mama…”
She didn’t know what was going on, but she knew something was wrong. Bright, orange, hot light flickered from some of the houses. People the girl knew shuffled around, but all ignored her, despite her asking them for help. Their movements were strange and occasionally some would make scary sounds.
And she couldn’t find her mom.
Suddenly, loud noises came from nearby. Many of the wandering people began to move in the direction of the clammer. And the girl decided to follow.
Around the corner, the girl saw several individuals she didn’t know. They wore heavy armor and were fighting the people of the girl’s town. The girl didn’t understand.
Then, she spotted someone else. Their armor was unique from the others and their weapon bore a long, curved blade. She could not see their face, but something about them made the girl believe things would now be alright.
“Mama…” She stepped toward the group.
---------
“Anita.”
The girl opened her eyes.
“Are you alright, my dear?” Quentin asked.
“Mm…” Anita sniffled before snuggling closer.
“Another bad dream?”
“Mm…”
“Well, you’re alright now. I’m here.” Quentin tilted his head down to plant a kiss atop his daughter’s head.
“…”
It seemed the girl had already fallen back asleep.
---------
“Executor.”
“Hey, Index.” Quentin greeted the psion approaching him.
“How goes Ms. Ani… Scythryn’s training?”
Quentin chuckled. “I thought you remembered everything, yet you’re already forgetting her callsign?”
“Forgive me, sir, but I have known of her for mellenia, yet she has only just recently joined the guild.”
Quentin shrugged and turned his attention back to the young warlock flying around the training area, giggling joyously as though she hadn’t awakened several times the prior night with nightmares.
Heh… young girl… Index theorized she was nearly as old as this world. But this incarnation… was that the right word? appeared young. Young enough in fact that Quentin had adopted her to avoid her appearance might cause. It wasn’t the first time he had taken a long-lived individual under his wing for such purposes, so he was a natural choice among the guild members.
“Say, Dex, a question.”
Index nodded.
“You’re an immortal.”
“As long as I desire to be, yes.”
“And you remember everything, including everything you have lost.”
“Yes.”
“And Anita is an immortal.”
“In a different manner, but yes.”
“And she forgets everything each time she… resets, including everything she has ever loved.”
“Yes, although she seems to remember an attachment to scythes.”
“Which do you believe hurts more?”
Index raised an eyebrow. “Are you asking about her and I, or yourself?”
The recently revived man scoffed and went back to watching.
---------
“Shizuko.”
“Mm?”
“Why do you always do this?”
“What do you mean, Kasumi-chan?”
“Immortality is one of the more popular fantasies. People love reading it because they love imaginig living forever.”
“Yes…”
“So why dose Shizuko have to ruin it by making her reader choose between forgetting loved ones or remembering losing them?”
“It’s a logical consequence of immortality.”
“I don’t want logic, I wanna fantasy about living forever and being happy!”
“Index and Scythryn are happy. They even have a found family with the guild.”
“And this Quentin, Executor guy?”
“He’s not immortal, he was just dead for a century and a half before being revived.”
Kasumi pursed her lips. “I’ll never understand why you gotta torture your characters.”
“Tragedy builds character.”
Kasumi sighed.
“I’ll be sure to write some cuter stuff for Scythryn later. I think you’ll like her. She’s a lot like Ryqo, the character Yuu-sempai played in our D&D game.”
That got Kasumi’s attention. “Ooo, let me know when you’re done.”
Shizuku giggled. “Of course.”
---------
Author's Note Continued: Anita and Quentin are two of my favorite OCs from the D&D themed story I've been writing for years, and never really stopped thinking about even when I started writing LL fanfic instead. Readers of my AUs involving Yohane may have recognized daggers of condensed magic and a fondness for scythes, as I pulled from Anita to create Yohane's fallen angel power set. Quentin is the father of Ryqoshay, whose callsign I've used as my screen name for years, and he is the reason for the Q in the mispelling of Ricochet; her mother, Yuri, is the Y.
I've already written and posted about several of my D&D OCs as I had several of the Niji girls play them in a game DM'ed by Setsuna. And just as my story expanded beyond the game that inspired it, I can see Shizuku and Setsuna continuing to create characters and worldbuild after their game as well. As such, this may be a way for me to slowly introduce my cast of OCs. And if some are received well enough, perhaps I will post some of my original works about them.
In any case, writing this brought back memories; interesting coincidence considering the prompt. And it was fun.

Just finished a dnd session and now I’m thinking abt how the niji group would play SO
Rina: the most proficient in playing. The perfect balance between creating a good character with an interesting backstory, knowing how to play a class and getting into the roleplaying. Rina would love to dm one day, but currently feels like she wouldn’t make a good dm. But she would, building amazing worlds and lore and stories with great npcs and making detailed maps. Her favourite to play would be an artificer
Kasumi: for a start she would have no interest in playing, but once she realises she is missing out she changes her tune real quick. Maybe gets into the aesthetics of it all before actually learning to play eg getting pretty dice, making a cute character. But when it comes to stats and class and the rolls, she’s completely lost. She gets pouty and upset the first few times, but once she gets the hang of it, kasumi gets a little too into the fighting and roleplaying. The biggest 180 of them all. Starts off playing as a super cutesy bard, but once she gets more into it, probably leans into being more evil and betrays her entire party >:)
Shizuku: would really enjoy the character creation part, and the roleplaying. She would go all out on making a detailed character with a rich backstory and personality, and be really good at acting out the pcs actions. She wouldn’t be bad at the other aspects, but they probably wouldn’t be as appealing to her. She would love getting to interact with her friends characters too, making a story together :) would probably play a character that’s not similar to her at all, maybe a loud barbarian or and old mysterious Druid
Ayumu: the only thing that appeals to her is the spending time with friends. She gets nervous trying to roleplay and struggles a bit keeping up with all of the skills and modifiers, and doesn’t really know what any of the classes or races are. Initially she is put out by all this and is a bit upset, but with the patience of her friends and the discussion they all have together, she eventually gets the hang of it and has fun. She would play as a fighter simply because it’s the least stressful
Setsuna: being a nerd, jumps at the chance to play. Her main interest is the story telling of it all, enjoying all the plot twists and puzzles and learning all the characters backstories as they unfold. She puts a lot of research and effort in building a useful, interesting character, probably a warlock with a terrible secret and are atoning for it.
Ai: as with everything else, ai is super into giving it a shot and finds it immensely fun. She would latch onto all the skills and modifiers and such really easily, and really likes how multifaceted playing dnd is, it’s never boring. Definitely doesn’t go the tragic backstory route, and accidentally ends up making a character very similar to herself. Is absolutely the type to make memes for the campaign and gags about what happened. Probably plays a monk
Emma: everyone is surprised to find out that she has already played before. It was a small game that she dmed for her younger siblings, but she did a lot of reading and researching on how to play. She really likes the escapism of it all, being in a fantasy land with proficiencies that can’t really be achieved in the real world. While playing a proper campaign is super different to her first one, emma has a lot of fun and enjoys hearing her friends laugh and be happy :) 100% plays a bard
Karin: is the most reluctant to play. She says it’s because she’s not interested but really it’s because she’s SUPER anxious. But after sitting in listening to the first few sessions, she gets seriously into it, and decides to try it out. She makes her character alongside emma, to ease into it better. She gets the hang of the proficiencies pretty quick and learns to use that to roleplay her character better. Plays a ranger
Kanata: she is super keen to play and enjoys it so much, but often has to miss out on sessions due to her being busy a lot. She doesn’t mind so much, and most likes the after session discussions she hears about. She joins Ai in the campaign meme making, and the nerdy talk about mechanics with rina and setsuna. When she can join, she plays a cleric

so I listened to the new nijigasaki album and have some thoughts on all the solos below the cut. Let me know if you agree or disagree.
Keep in mind that I do have biases towards and against certain characters here, so if I dislike your favorite girls favorite song, that’s ok. Generally my favorite Niji girls are Mia, Setsuna, and Karin while my least favorites are Kanata, and ayumu. No hate towards them, they just aren’t my cup of tea.
- Walking dream- very ayumu, very generic, not interesting to me
- Senobi Shitatte - eh, not Kasumi’s best
- Koakuma LOVE - good! Super fun and cutesy in a way that is unexpected from Shizuku
- My Shadow - Hell Yeah Karin’s back baby! Big fan of this one
- Request for U - the initial instrumentals are killer but the song doesn’t do much with them, which is unfortunate. Ai has better solos
- Cooking With Love - cute. Still not the biggest Kanata fan but the song is good
- Cherry Bomb - super fun and good for Setsuna as a character (I miss Tomori’s voice tho :(
- Koi suru Sunflower - kinda unremarkable tbh. Aion no it’s part 2 when???
- Watashi wa magnet - awwwwe Rina the theme is perfect for her. Idk if I love the song but I think that’s just because it wasn’t formulated to appeal to me musically. Still 10/10
- Kokufuron - ehhh not shioriko’s best song
- Lemonade - very much a Mia love song, I don’t know what the title has to do with it tho.
- 5201314 - total bop as expected of Lanzhu. Another smash hit. Wondering about the meaning of the numbers, will have to check the wiki later.

Niji s2ep8 was fucking fantastic! Just very great execution of quintessential Love Live personal drama and spurring on and inspiring others and shit, really upped Mia’s likability as well after having fairly little screentime this season. On top of that her song - stars we chase - was fucking brilliant as all hell, I love Mia’s solo songs so much. Dope time dope time. Also next episode is called like Kasumin Wonder Tour or something? I kinda expect the episode to not just be a Kasumi episode since solo episodes this late in the game when we can’t even fit every girl in seems weird but we’ll see what happens I suppose.

you calling those five your "starting five" has me thinking nijigaku basketaball au now xD
These five? Because if we were trying to put together a basketball team those five would probably be the last ones picked shjkgfd
The actual Niji-Ballin' starting five would be:
Ai, canonically a basketball player, the team's player-coach
Mia, idk if she knows basketball but she knows baseball so she at least does A Sport
Lanzhu, going off of vibes alone I think she'd be decent. At the very least she is a ruthless competitor
(from here it's slim pickings but hear me out-)
Kasumi, she'd be a menace on defense and would be really good at stealing the ball (the drawback being she also ends up fouling a lot and probably fouls-out every game). Ai coaches her to steal the ball and then immediately pass it to someone else because Kasumi just cannot wrap her head around the concept of dribbling and will take five steps with the ball in both hands.
And lastly, Shioriko, who has never done anything athletic but is on the taller side and is disciplined and coachable
They would lose every game but it would be so entertaining

That comment about last year's Daily Theatre Mother's Day episode reminded me that we know very little about the parents of a lot of the Nijigaku idols, especially compared to the three mainline anime series.
The only Niji parent to get a sprite in SIFAS is Lanzhu's mom, as the chairwoman of Nijigasaki High School; the anime didn't show a parent until the second season, when it revealed Kanata's, Setsuna's, and Shizuku's mothers in minor roles and Emma's and Mia's mothers in flashback/cameos.
Shioriko's family runs a flower arrangement school, which I believe her mother runs; Ai's parents have a monjayaki restaurant and live with Ai's grandmother, but it's unclear which one. Rina's parents just have "important jobs". All we really know about Ayumu's and Yu's respective parents is that they have adjacent apartments and are close enough to each other to vacation together; all we know about Karin's parents is that they live on one of the subtropical islands that are still somehow inside Tokyo (I believe I've identified it as Hachijojima). I'm don't think we know even that much information about Kasumi's parents.
I mean, due to the school-based and self-contained nature — and, to be honest, the lower stakes — of Nijigasaki's stories, it makes a certain amount of sense that everybody's families play a much smaller role than in SIP, Sunshine, or Superstar. But it's a little bit odd that, say, we don't know the names of Emma's siblings, or even have a canonical count of them.

Amelie Sugar- She’s me and y’all should know her. She’s expressive and cheerful, also dramatic. Clumsy and idealistic. Magical girl protagonist. She sees the magic in the mundane and humor in every situation, and is often perceived as annoying. She does get discouraged at times, and it hits hard when she does. Unexpectedly kind of normal compared to the others. She has puffy pink hair. Her eyes are black but turn pink when she gets intense.

TA Side Story: Keep it Tied Tight
Primary Pairing: ShizuKasu Implied Pairing Trio: YuuAyuSetsu Words: ~2.5k Rating: T? Fandom: Love Live Nijigasaki Parent Fic: Tri-Arame Time Frame: Sometime at least after Episode 6 of Niji’s second season Event: Femslash Friday Event Source: @femslash-friday-prompts Prompt: Ribbon Content Warning: Major Character Death (?)
---------
Author’s Note: As with my prior uses of it, the (?) is intentional in conjunction with the MCD warning.
Also, whew... barely a half hour to spare as far as my timezone is concerned.
Summary: Kasumi has noticed some strange behavior from Shizuku recently
---------
Kasumi scanned the throng of students entering the school.
Where was she? She wasn’t the type to be late. And though she wasn’t the tallest in the school, she did wear a particular signature item that often helped identify her in a crowd, especially from the higher vantage point of the lobby balcony, where Kasumi was now.
“Good morning, Kasumi-san.” A voice said from nearby.
Kasumi startled. “S-Shizuko!?” She spun toward the girl she had just named.
Approaching with the pleasant smile Kasumi loved seeing each morning was indeed Shizuku, except… Where was her ribbon? Kasumi had spent the last several minutes searching for… Oh, there it was… maybe? But why was Shizuku wearing her ribbon as a choker today?
“Trying out a new style today, Shizuko?” Kasumi couldn’t help asking.
“Mm?” Shizuku tilted her head. “How do you mean?”
“Your ribbon.” Kasumi pointed. “You’re wearing it around your neck.”
A strange expression clouded Shizuku’s face as her gaze dropped toward the floor. “Yes, I am afraid that is how it must be from here on.”
“Huh?”
“This ribbon must remain tied tight.” Shizuku raised a hand to gently touch the choker around her neck. “It must never be removed.”
“Are you rehearsing for some new part your got in the drama club?” Kasumi inquired.
“No.” Shizuku shook her head, though Kasumi couldn’t help noticing that the movement seemed a little… stiff?
Was that the right word? It was definitely not normal, and definitely different from Shizuku’s normal movements. Not that Kasumi paid any special attention to Shizuku’s normal movements… no, that was wrong, Kasumi did actually pay special attention to Shizuku, because…
“Anyway,” Shizuku interrupted Kasumi’s thoughts “shall we head to class?” Her usual smile seemed to have returned.
“Right…” Kasumi replied. “Are you alright, Shizuko?”
“I’m fine, why do you ask?”
“… No reason…”
Shizuku laughed lightly and the two started walking. Kasumi stole a few side glances at her friend. Something strange was going on with Shizuku. And while she had denied it being about something with the drama club, it definitely involved the ribbon around her neck somehow. Kasumi decided she would have to pay even more attention to Shizuku for a while if she was to figure out what was going on.
---------
What the heck is going on with Shizuko? Kasumi wondered as she stared at the ceiling of her bedroom. And why the heck is nobody else noticing? Seriously, not one comment from anyone?
Surely, when Ai and Rina had joined them for lunch, someone with high attention to detail like Rina would have said something, right? Surely Ai would have made some pun about the situation, right? But neither said a word about the ribbon.
Surely, when they ran into the other second years on their way to the clubroom, someone fond of working with hair and accessories like Ayumu would have wanted to make conversation about the change, right? Surely Setsuna, who was familiar with popular school idol tropes, would have made mention of the alternate hair style, right? Surely Yuu might have wanted to tease her kouhai with whom she had gotten quite close as of late, right? But again, nobody said anything.
Surely, once in the clubroom, someone similarly fond of teasing like Kanata would have spoken up, right? Surely Karin, with her eye for fashion, would have made some sort of comment, right? Surely Emma, who loved to find ways to compliment her friends, would have seen the opportunity to do so, right? But still, silence on the matter.
By the gods, how could everyone else be so blind? Kasumi could literally count on her hands the number of times she had seen Shizuku without her signature ribbon. Well, maybe more if one counted the minute or so it took for her to change to and from the ones she used for club activities. But still…
And on the topic of club activities, Shizuku hadn’t tied her hair up for practice today either. Kasumi had somewhat expected her to at least swap the red ribbon she wore all day around her neck for the white one she was currently using for practice, but she hadn’t. And despite the red standing out even more against Shizuku’s light blue practice outfit, it still went unnoticed.
But that hadn’t been the only strange part about practice. Emma unexpectedly took over vocal practice, instead of Shizuku, who had been doing so for months now. And Kasumi was sure it hadn’t been her imagination that Shizuku’s voice had sounded a little… off.
Then came dance practice, where Shizuku had been fine, except for movements involving her head. Just like earlier in the day, Shizuku moved as though she had a crick in her neck. Perhaps she had slept wrong and pinched a nerve or something?
Kasumi sighed as she continued to draw blanks on reasoning out the happenings of the day. Well, whatever. She finally gave up. Shizuko probably thinks she pulled off some great prank. She thought to herself as she slid under the covers. Let her have her little victory. Kazumin is still the queen of pranks and will get her back soon enough.
With those thoughts in mind, Kasumi closed her eyes and fell asleep.
---------
Ughn!
Kasumi resisted the urge to yank at her hair with frustration.
Shizuku had once again worn her ribbon around her neck, instead of in her hair. And not only that, but her complexion had obviously paled since the prior day. Her stiffness had spread to her arms and legs, making her dance practice look like she was a marionette with damaged strings. Her voice had gained a slight rasp. And her stamina had diminished, causing her to sit out of several routines.
And yet, just like the day before, nobody said anything.
Well, nobody but Kasumi.
Kasumi had asked about Shizuku’s health, concerned that maybe she was coming down with something. However, Shizuku had assured her she was fine. And further inquiry about the ribbon was met with a similar, cryptic statement that she must keep it tied tight, as if that was supposed to explain everything.
Just what the heck was going on?
Kasumi scrunched her face as she stared at her bedroom ceiling.
Enough was enough. Tomorrow, she would confront the club members about their indifference and force a better explanation out of Shizuku.
---------
“So, this is what you guys have been working on?” Kasumi asked as she and Shizuku entered the dark area.
Kasumi’s plans to get answers from the idol club members had fallen through when practice was cancelled for the day. She had been about to give up and head home when Shizuku had approached her to seek assistance with something relating to her subgroup, A・ZU・NA.
“Yes.” Shizuku confirmed. “Haunted houses are a staple of amusement parks, so we thought it might be fun to set one up in celebration of our new song.” She explained, making mention of the theme A・ZU・NA had chosen.
“But you guys have been singing mostly happy songs so far.” Kasumi commented. “What kind of happy song can be written about a haunted house?”
“Perhaps one could love song about a ghost falling for a gremlin?”
A ghost and a gremlin? Falling in love in a haunted house? What kind of love story is that? Kasumi wondered silently. Was it from a movie Shizuku liked? No, that couldn’t be; Shizuku preferred old time dramas and musicals, not horror movies, or horror comedies, or whatever a monster romance would be. Are gremlins commonly used in haunted houses? Ghosts sure, but why did Shizuko mention gremlins?
“I’m not sure I get it.” Kasumi decided to say aloud.
Wait, was Shizuku slyly referring to her as a gremlin? If that was the case, who was the ghost?
“I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.” Shizuku laughed lightly. “Anyway, thank you for agreeing to help us with a test run.”
“But of course!” Kasumi replied. “Who better to test your haunted house than Kasumin, whose cuteness can overwhelm any ghost or ghoul who tries to scare her.”
Shizuku chuckled again.
“Lemme guess, you got Yuu-senpai to play the music?” Kasumi guessed an organ began a haunting tune.
“Maybe.”
Kasumi rolled her eyes but didn’t press the issue. Of course, Yuu would help them; she seemed particularly fond of helping Ayumu and Setsuna in any way she could. And she and Shizuku had been getting closer as of late as well, for reasons Kasumi couldn’t quite figure out. Not that she was jealous or anything…
“Graa!” A voice suddenly cried.
Kasumi was loath to accept that she did jump a bit before she turned to see a figure appear from an obscured area.
“Oh, hey Ayumu-senpai.” Kasumi greeted.
The redhead lowered her arms and pouted a little. “I guess I still have a ways to go to learn how to be scary. Maybe vampire Christine was a bad idea after all.”
“I like the vampire costume.” Kasumi observed. “But maybe bare your teeth more?”
“Don’t worry, Ayumu-san,” Shizuku chimed in “we have all weekend to work on things.”
“How dare thee insult my Christine!” another voice suddenly shouted. “Have at thee!”
Had Kasumi blinked, she would have missed a sword flashing in front of her face. What?
“S-Setsuna-senpai?” Kasumi sputtered as she recognized the girl who had put herself between her and Ayumu.
“I know not who this Setsuna individual might be.” Setsuna stated. “I am Raoul!” She pounded a fist to her chest proudly. “Viscount Raoul de Chagny!”
“Is that the beast costume you wore for the Festival?” Kasumi asked the second year as she recognized the claws, ears and tail.
“A beast thou doth sayeth I am? How very brave of thee to refer to a werewolf as such.” Setsuna brandished her weapon toward Kasumi.
“Raoul.” Ayumu protested.
“Fear not, Christine, these insipid interlopers shall be dispatched with haste.” And with that, Setsuna lunged forward.
“Kasumi-san!” Shizuku cried, suddenly stepping between Kasumi and Setsuna. “Gheeh…”
What kind of noise was that? Kasumi turned toward her fellow first year.
“Shizuko…?” She questioned.
For her part, Shizuku gasped and clutched at her throat. What was going on?
“What’s this?” Setsuna asked, her voice having lost its former bravado as she removed a red ribbon from the end of her sword.
Red ribbon…
“This…” Shizuku’s voice rasped “is why I needed to keep it tied tight…”
And then Shizuku’s head fell off.
Kasumi stared in disbelief at the sight.
Shizuku’s eyes snapped open. “It was never to be removed!” She shrieked.
“Kyaaa!” Kasumi screamed, bolting for the nearest thing she thought might be an exit. She shoved aside the dark curtain and… “Kya!” She cried again after barreling into a figure with wild hair and a hideously deformed face.
“Kasumi-chan?” A concerned voice asked as arms caught her.
“Let me go!” Kasumi wrenched herself against her captor.
“Oh, sorry…” The arms released. “Shizuku-chan, I think you scared her too much.”
Eh? Kasumi paused and took a better look at the individual who had just let go of her. Despite its disheveled style, green tips at the end of the dark hair were a dead giveaway of her identity; Yuu.
“Sorry, Kasumi-san.” Shizuku’s voice came from behind the curtain before it was moved aside to reveal the other first year, with her head firmly attached to her shoulders.
Next to Shizuku was… another, taller Shizuku?
“Two Shizukos?” Kasumi questioned, trying desperately to sort out all that had happened in the last minute or so.
The taller girl laughed and removed her wig to reveal her identity as the president of the drama club.
“Thank you for your help, Kasumi-san.” Shizuku said as she stepped toward Kasumi.
“Help?” Kasumi shook her head. “Help with what?”
“With proving my costume worked.”
“Our costumes.” The drama president corrected.
“Right.” Shizuku smiled at her club leader before returning her attention to Kasumi. “I was unsure if Kasumi-san would be familiar with the story, The Green Ribbon, but it seems you were not. And maybe other students will also be unfamiliar, so we can scare them as well.”
So, was this a prank, or a test, or…
“Anyway, as thanks for your assistance,” Shizuku continued, “why don’t I treat you to something on our way home?”
Treats? That caught Kasumi’s attention. However, “Shizuko’s gonna have to get something big for Kasumin to make up for scaring her so much.” She said, trying to recover some of her dignity.
“Whatever you want.” Shizuku replied with a smile that made Kasumi’s heartrate spike.
“Oh, Shizuku-san,” Setsuna suddenly spoke up “don’t forget this.” She held out the ribbon she had surprisingly managed to remove from the other girl’s neck with just a thrust from a prop sword.
Kasumi couldn’t help wondering what clever theater tricks had all gone into that little stunt. Perhaps she could convince Shizuku to explain everything later, after she had procured the promised treat.
“Thank you, Setsuna-san.” Shizuku accepted the accessory and began tying it into her hair. “I think we had a good rehearsal.” She said to her fellow subgroup members. “I’ll see you all again later this weekend.”
General confirmations were given and the group started to go their separate ways.
“Shall we head out?” Shiuzku held out a hand toward Kasumi.
“Sure.” Kasumi accepted.
As the two made their way out of the school complex, Kasumi’s thoughts turned toward what pranks she could pull on Shizuku to avenge herself. Should it be something big like what Shizuku had just pulled off, or a series of smaller ones that added up to the same effect? Decisions… decisions..
“Are you already plotting your revenge?”
Kasumi startled, earning a laugh from Shizuku.
“Maybe.” Kasumi decided to concede. “Shizuko got Kasumin good this time, but she better not think that ends things.”
“Of course not.” Shizuku seemed genuinely pleased with the idea.
“Say, Shizuko…”
“Mm?”
“Why were Yuu-senpai and the others dressed as monstrous Phantom of the Opera characters?”
“Oh, about that…” Shizuku laughed.
And with that, the conversation turned to the haunted house and how it would tie into A・ZU・NA’s new song.
---------
~~~ Earlier that week ~~~
“Hey, if I’m gonna be playing organ music, maybe I should dress up as the Phantom.” Yuu suddenly suggested.
“From the Phantom of the Opera?” Shizuku asked, despite pretty much already knowing the answer.
“Exactly.” Yuu confirmed. “And to make it scary, I could leave the iconic mask off and get a bunch of gnarly makeup over half my face.” She wiggled her fingers near her face to emphasize her point.
“That sounds like a wonderful idea.” The drama club president stated.
“Perhaps if Yuu-chan is going to be the Phantom, perhaps I could play Christine?” Ayumu offered hesitantly.
“I’m not sure how scary Christine could be.” Shizuku thought aloud.
“She could be scary if we make her a vampire!” Setsuna jumped in, literally and figuratively, as she bounced with her usual excitement. “Oh, then I could be Raoul, the werewolf! Raoul uses a sword right?”
“Yes, but not a flaming one.” Shizuku stated.
Setsuna pouted a little, but immediately brightened again. “But I can still use a sword, right?”
An idea occurred to Shizuku and she couldn’t help smiling.
“Shizuku-san?”
“I think I can work with that, Setsuna-san.” Shizuku replied. “Also, I believe I have an idea for my own costume. However, I must ask a favor of everyone; don’t tell Kasumi-san.”
Author’s Note Continued:  Reading the prompt immediately made me think about Shizuku, as she herself calls it her trademark in the song Ryouran! Victory Road. However, I couldn’t help wondering if I couldn’t put a twist on things. I had recently written a chapter for Putting on Hairs that saw Shizuku use her ghostly abilities to pull off a dramatic prank on Kasumi, so perhaps a more realistic Shizuku could use some theater magic to do something similar. Thus, the basis for this chapter was formed.
Also, any readers familiar with the story, The Green Ribbon, might have already guessed the prank before its reveal, but I hope my take on things was still entertaining.
I must admit I struggled a bit with the overall timing of this chapter. My initial plan was to have it take place over an entire week, with Shizuku first wearing the ribbon around her neck on Monday and having the test tour through the haunted house on a Friday. However, I couldn’t help worrying that it would be out of character for Kasumi to patiently wait that long for the prank’s climax. I also wasn’t sure if I wanted to write Kasumi’s confrontation with the club, or maybe just individual members. As such, I shortened the timeline to just three days and hoped it would work better.
Also, kudos to anyone who caught my reference to the PoH’s monster forms of Shizuku and Kasumi before I pointed it out here. It’s the part where Shizuku mentions a ghost and a gremlin falling in love. I’m not entirely sure if the PoH actors will be brought up over here in TA, but I do intend to have the plays end up as movies. I already brought in the titular Putting on Hairs into a How to Handle a Nico chapter, so I will eventually get around to bringing in the Detective Otosu and Beauty and the Beast rewrite to TA at some point.
And finally, thank you to @lonelypond for once again letting me brainstorm ideas and also suggesting a few in return, like having someone decide to make Ayumu’s Christine a vampire.
